pre-amnesia during the Villain Days sloane had a basement room in gortash's estate in the upper city that she used whenever she wanted to stay in the area for a while. it looked fairly normal but as i mentioned she kept all sorts of weird bhaalist shit stashed in there. she also frequently let herself into his house without asking.

they wrote back and forth to each other a lot and it became an eternal game where she'd hide her letters in increasingly weird locations around his house. he had to use his brain to puzzle out the location of each one, often hinted at by something in the previous letter, and she had to use her rogue skills to dodge all his security so she could hide them without him finding out.

she'd also never use doors, when she needed to move around the house she'd climb, go through windows, or run around inside the walls like a weirdo

Sloane is absurdly quiet. For companions or tavs that share camp with her, she has a bad habit of appearing out of nowhere and jumpscaring people. It's not intentional, she's just kind of unassuming and she moves silently, and she forgets to announce herself.

Before the tadpole incident, the other Chosen used to joke that they could drape her in bells and she'd still be able to sneak up on them. And yeah, she did the jumpscare thing to Gortash and Ketheric, too.

so with gortash:

she had a weirdly functional dynamic with him. i will not call it healthy (they were both evil, and they did nothing to change that, and they enabled each other really bad) or romantic (they were evil friends with benefits, i'd say) but. she liked that he treated her like a person to work with, co-conspirator and such, and a human rather than a monster or an object of worship. so she afforded him that same courtesy. they were very much equal footing big bads who had a weirdly emotional connection because they were both extremely fucked up and bad in similar ways. they trusted each other too, weirdly.

playful banter where he tells her that he wants to vivisect her and how he'd do it and she tells him which of his organs she'd like to eat and in what order. like that sort of thing. these were not threats they were flirtatious.

the thesis statement of this relationship back then was sort of. hold on i have a post for it. here it is. and this one. and this one. and this sorta thing.

he let The Dark Urge, Daughter of the Lord of Murder and leader of the Cult of Bhaal, shave his face with a straight razor, which is boldness so great that it perhaps equates to madness.

she writes about him in her fucked up evil diary.

all of this effect how she feels post-amnesia when they eventually kill him SO STRONGLY. someday ill write a post about that. tl;dr version though is that her main thought at the time is 'god in another life i would have also been dying here'

and Ketheric:

The most telling thing I can say about this dynamic is that when they brought Isobel back she got jealous about it. And no, if you asked her why she was acting like that she would not have been able to explain it to you. But she had some feelings about the whole thing.

Spent a lot of time at Moonrise together and I think they had a slightly more fraught dynamic because unlike Gortash, Ketheric liked her but he did not actually trust her. She didn't trust him either but she was weirdly attached to him anyway.

He did find her nice to spend time with and she liked how like. Unexpectedly considerate he was occasionally. He actually kept in mind things she'd want or find interesting and let her to a lot of the bloodier work because he knew she'd enjoy it. It was a sort of treatment she was not used to getting.

this but so deep in her subconscious that she doesn't realize that's how she feels about it and ketheric didn't really consciously get the vibe either or it would have made him uncomfortable.

sloane is not super affectionate on a good day but she liked to do that thing with him where she'd sit in the corner of his room while he was working, doing some mundane task like stitching up a hole in her jacket or whatever, not interacting with him but sharing the space. like a cat.

+ Someday I'll write up a big post about Orin the Red because I think Sloane and Orin's relationship is the most complicated of the three and because y'know, Orin wasn't a part of The Trio back then. And because I have backstory for them that I wrote, where they had more of a childhood together.

Orin has always felt to a degree like her ghost, or her shadow. They have a sort of duality and also a weird familiar relationship. They cared about each other and they also resented each other. Someday I'll organize my thoughts about it. Check out the pinterest section for them, though.

^ this one's my current blorbo that ive been rotating in my brain nonstop like a rotisserie chicken. Sloane Augustine Blackthorn / 34 years old, human / the dark urge.

fun facts:

she's rogue (thief) 6/warlock (fiend) 6. in-character she's very much inspired by the dishonored protagonists. fast, stealthy, shortsword and crossbow user with magic to enhance her sneaking and stealth kills. her patron is a powerful horrid little parasitic treachery demon generally known as "the big bad wolf."

she's got no shadow a lot of the time

she's incredibly light on her feet and moves quietly enough that she has a bad habit of jumpscaring her companions because she refuses to announce herself. pre-tadpole she would also jumpscare ketheric and gortash all the time. nothing there has changed

excessively good hygiene for someone who used to spend so much time murdering people. she's very into hair care and such. she may have been an evil blood-and-guts murder villain but she was an evil villain who spent a lot of time on her hair and makeup and kept herself very clean. her teeth are also perfect. that's not to say she's never unkempt but even out on the road she does her best to look the way she wants to because it matters to her. it all borders a little bit on being obsessive

6: What companion are you platonically close with?

Jaheira is her best friend. She actually spends so much of her time with the legacy companions by act 3, she latches onto Jaheira and Minsc pretty hard. They understand the Bhaalspawn stuff better than anyone else and they still believe in her, which is big for her.

Aside from them, she LOVES Wyll! They're bffs. I actually spent a long time trying to decide if Sloane was bi or straight in early character creation; she's bi, but if I hadn't come down to that, Wyll would have been her romance.

15: What NPC's do they like? Which one's do they dislike?

she's got a love-hate relationship with both gortash and orin. I'm in the process of writing the Sloane and Orin Dynamic stuff as we speak. After they kill Gortash she actually decides she's going to try and save Orin (and she does try, it doesn't really work, but she really, really tries)

She doesn't like any of the camp animals and avoids them all as much as possible. She's just not good with smaller animals, and she's worried if she's not careful, she'll kill them.

16: Do they have a favorite creature in the Faerûn?

She likes horses. That's a boring answer, but it's true. She's a horse girl. She'd love to have a horse and would put a lot of time into styling its mane.

28: Is your character the de facto leader of the party? Or do they consider someone else to be the leader?

Sloane does not consider herself leader for most of the game. She actually travels with some of my friends' tavs, so she defaults to them most of the time. Occasionally she gets dragged kicking and screaming into the spotlight, though, like in some of the Dark Urge scenes, talking to Gortash, or the Bhaal temple stuff.

In act 1, Sloane is kind of on a knife edge morally. She kills two people (Alfira and the tiefling in the storehouse... I forget her name RN it's 3am) and struggles a lot with her like.... Lack of identity. She latches onto the first people who are genuinely kind of her and not standoffish (Karlach and Wyll) who both seem to stand by her despite a lot of the bullshit.

Things hit an actual turning point in act 2 when she talks to Isobel. She tells her that she's supposed to kill her and Isobel is like "you won't, though, I can see it in you and I don't see you as that sort of person" and she's like. I'm not? I have a choice? Holy shit. It's a novelty to her, and something nobody's ever really presented as an option to her before. But she does decide right around that moment that she wants Isobel (and everyone else she's growing to care about) to be right about her. Somewhere in her mind she knows that her entire life has been a story about destiny, or at least-- that's what they keep telling her. But is it actually fate?

Sloane starts act 3 trying to hide her past from her friends and distance herself from it so much. She has taken steps at this point and is suddenly hit with this huge info drop about her past that has her reeling for a while and doing some lowkey lying in order to try and preserve her image of herself as "changed". Mostly to herself. But also to everyone else. She hates everything she's learned so far. The end result is that a bunch of her friends get pissed at her for turning into a liar and Karlach breaks up with her temporarily.

Oddly, killing Gortash gets under her skin in the way of 'in another version of this world, this was me dying for my stupid villain agenda!' Realizing she WAS one of them and can't unmake what she was and damn, these people are a lot like her in a lot of ways but they're also stuck in a lot of ways too. It's the thing that prompts her to reach out to Orin in the end and inform her wayward sibling that they were both victims. Bhaal ruins her attempt to save Orin, of course, but the fact that she not only tried but that it almost worked helps her a lot in deciding to take ownership of who she was along with who she wants to be. They were both victims and they were both villains. It doesn't mean there's no hope for them. It's not about what you've done, it's about what you choose to do next.

(She vows to try and save Orin's soul eventually. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. But she will try one day. She's a 12th level adventurer, who's to tell her she can't?)

In the end she does defy Bhaal. She gets back together with Karlach. She apologizes to her friends and lets them hear her story and judge for themselves. And she destroys the brain and saves the world.

And she makes a deal with Withers that one day, when the time is right, she will go through the list of people she's killed and remember all of their names. There's no making amends, not anymore. But she can try, that's the important part. She has a choice, and she can choose to try.
