In Praise of Slow Design
https://designobserver.com/feature/in-praise-of-slow-design/3947
"Daily life has become a cacophony of experiences that disable our senses, disconnect us from one another and damage the environment," say the designers of the not-for-profit slowLab."
"But deep experience of the world — meaningful and revealing relationships with the people, places and things we interact with — requires many speeds of engagement, and especially the slower ones."
slow design is not just about duration or speed, but about thoughtfulness, deliberation, and — how else to put it? — tender loving care.
to restructure the typography of the theatre and movie listings and commissioned — are you ready? — the ultimate modernist, Massimo Vignelli. To his credit, Vignelli fully understood the delicacy of the situation and acted (unnoticed by nearly everyone) with the precision of a surgeon.

T𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩 BodyBuilding 𝙇𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙄’𝙫𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙙 Did you ever hear from someone at the gym, "your fitness need to be slow" or “ʏᴏᴜ sʜᴏᴜʟᴅ ᴅᴏ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇᴀsʏ ᴛᴏᴅᴀʏ.” But after over ten years of training, coaching, and competing, I think embracing slow and easy gains is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned. It comes down to the difference between progress and achievement. ʟᴇᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴇxᴘʟᴀɪɴ… 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Our society is obsessed with achievements. The same question I have been asked all these years, "how much you bench, bro?" No one asks, "Have you been making progress recently?” !Sʟᴏᴡ ɢᴀɪɴs ᴀᴅᴅ ᴜᴘ ғᴀsᴛ Pick your favorite lift, and lift 1+ more than you did last week. You are not allowed to do 2+ only 1 kg or pounds. Do you think you could do that? Most people would be like, “Of course, and that's easy.” And they're right. But here's the funny thing: If you do that every week, then you’re going to add 50 pounds to your lifts in the next year. Stick with that for two years, and you’re lifting 100 pounds more. How many people do you know who are lifting 100 pounds more than they were two years ago? !Sʟᴏᴡ ɢᴀɪɴs ʜᴇʟᴘ ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀɴᴅʟᴇ ɪɴᴛᴇɴsɪᴛʏ ʟᴀᴛᴇʀ ᴏɴ For some reason, society has convinced us that if your heart rate isn’t above 150 beats per minute and you don’t feel gassed at the end of your workout, then you haven’t done yourself any good. Why? !𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙂𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨 𝙁a𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 The body has a fantastic ability to adapt, but if you try to push the body too far, too fast, it will find a different way to adapt—namely, inflammation and injury. ᴀɴsᴡᴇʀ﹕ ɴᴏᴛ ᴍɪssɪɴɢ ᴡᴏʀᴋᴏᴜᴛs. Stop trying to make up for the fact that you’re inconsistent by going harder when you’re there. Long-term progress doesn’t work that way. Instead, train yourself not to miss workouts and slowly add weight. FiTT Principle Academy: Most people train in this cycle: hard, more complicated, hurt. I’d instead go supa, slow, smart never stops... written by @mackpijewski . . . . .. #MackFitt #SupaFit #DNAyourlife #SLOWLab #CircleFestival #CircleDNAchangeMaker (at Hong Kong China) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ1NN4ovHFd/?utm_medium=tumblr

Mothé - Debt Collector [Alternative Rock, Indietronica]
Mothé – Debt Collector [Alternative Rock, Indietronica]

Review: Mothe releases infectiously bright new single 'Summers Almost Gone'
Tumblr media
LA based producer and artist Spencer Fort has released their latest single under pseudonym Mothé. This proudly non-binary artist has been slowly but surely getting their name heard on the music scene, particularly when they transitioned from past band Moth Wings into this new project that has already accumulated over 40,000 monthly Spotify listeners in just over a year. We've also seen Fort set-up independent record label Slowlab Records, intended to prioritise the artist and their interests that they found to be lacking as a non-binary musician.
Having played piano and trained in classical music from a young age, Spencer found music to be their safe space and ultimately decided pursuing it was the path intended for them. They spent four years under the name Moth Wings and accumulated over 1 million streams before moving on to collaborate with Dan Workman for a few years, and then finally setting up as Mothé.
This hard-working individual may have only been crafting music under Mothé since 2020, but they've already released a number of singles including debut release 'You're So Cool', and newer singles like 'Dancing On An Empty Floor' and 'Wrong Places' that truly shape where this creative being is headed within their work. These tracks have amassed over 400,000 streams and are only the beginning of what's to come.
Mothé's latest single 'Summers Almost Gone' is atmospherically commenced, with echoey electric guitar strums bouncing sunny energy around before things kick into full gear. With a haunting elegance, the vocals radiate vibrancy and a taste of nostalgia in Spencer's rich tone. The pre-chorus is utterly delectable, with a short but sweet punchy riff and sped up vocals acting as the main hook of the release for us. If you don't leave this track with 'People always smile in the middle of the heatwave' spinning around your mind, we'll be surprised. No one is doing indie-rock quite like Mothé in the industry, with their sound embodying a groovy twang amongst newer flourishes that make it utterly timeless in each and every release.
Slowing down around the 3-minute mark, we feel more of the rawness behind this instrumentally cheerful release. With a heavy guitar bridge, and drawn out whimsical outro it serves as a reminder that through the brightness of this tune there is some darkness in the lyricism. Feeding the narrative of a relationship's demise, we see this ended romance clashing with the end of the summer as though the warmth and joy of the season is being stripped away just like the love of this partner. With the initial track more upbeat before fading into this slower segment we feel the realisation that this romance is truly put to bed.
Give this cathartically upbeat release a listen here, as this certainly won't be the last time you hear of this talented dynamic musician.

The Revival of Craft and the Hand-Made
My thoughts on what ‘craft’ means is that it is the skill to make things by hand, or at least completing all processes personally. To be a master of ones craft is to be extremely skilled in ones particular specialism.
Slow design is a relatively new idea born from the wider ‘slow movement’ which has a series of principles that it adheres to.
Principle 1: REVEAL Slow design reveals experiences in everyday life that are often missed or forgotten, including the materials and processes that can be easily overlooked in an artifacts existence or creation.
Principle 2: EXPAND Slow design considers the real and potential “expressions” of artifacts and environments beyond their perceived functionalities, physical attributes and lifespans.
Principle 3: REFLECT Slow Design artifacts/environments/experiences induce contemplation and what slowLab has coined ‘reflective consumption.’
Principle 4: ENGAGE Slow Design processes are open-source and collaborative, relying on sharing, cooperation and transparency of information so that designs may continue to evolve into the future.
Principle 5: PARTICIPATE Slow Design encourages users to become active participants in the design process, embracing ideas of conviviality and exchange to foster social accountability and enhance communities.
Principle 6: EVOLVE Slow Design recognises that richer experiences can emerge from the dynamic maturation of artifacts, environments and systems over time. Looking beyond the needs and circumstances of the present day, slow designs are (behavioural) change agents.
I feel that people are becoming a lot more aware of the global impact their consumption and are taking an interest in new practices. People buy more free range and organic foods, they recycle packaging, so it’s only natural that they start to pay attention to how products they purchase are created. I also think that a lot of people would prefer to pay a little bit more for things that are of better quality, for example I personally like to shop locally and support local businesses and in turn the local economy. The coffee shop that I go to is owned by my friend, all their products are ethically sourced. there is a Costa up the street that is cheaper, but I’d rather know where my money is going. I also have pens that were handmade by a local man in his shed using reclaimed materials, they are beautifully made, and each one is unique and as such I look after them much more carefully than a pack of ten biro’s from Tesco. So I do think that the slow movement will continue to have a positive impact on our consumption and it’s products are of more value.
