something i think that really works about lautski is i dont think pete thinks steph is smart becuase he's one of those nice people who can appreciate other people's unique talents/types of intelligence and is like 'everyone is smart in their own way'

i love pete, and i think he's a genuinely kind person, but also he's a smart little stem asshole (and a spankoffski), who would confidently call himself smarter than most people both in his head and also to their face

he's not trying to be rude or anything most of the time, he just absolutley knows the score and is going by it

like, steph might think 'petes such a nice guy who just sees my potential the way he'd see it in anyone' but like... she's wrong, she's absolutley wrong

pete does NOT see potential in everyone, he sees it in steph and it's completely different to him -- he's not going to give someone he thinks is a lost cause/not worth it his time of day but he WILL for steph, even before they're dating/have mutual very obvious crushes
