chapter twenty the first autumn leaf

An account of Snorkmaiden's travels... And a long-awaited reunion.

Moomintroll felt the first pangs of homesickness there on the bridge, as his mother waved to him from the porch. But her words had scattered his doubts. Whether or not setting off to search for Snufkin would solve his problems, he didn't know. He only knew he had to do it. If he didn’t act, he was afraid he might forget he could. Moominmamma was right: this burgeoning, directionless energy couldn't be contained at home. It felt as though he'd spent the summer still in hibernation, but he was wide awake now. Soon Moominhouse had shrunk to no more than a blue dot in the distance. He started to whistle "All Small Beasts." Step by step, his spirits slowly lightened. The grass made a plush cushion for his paws, the air smelled crisp and clean, the sun was shining, and he was a Moomin on an adventure. Somewhere beyond the valley is Snufkin. He stamped his walking stick in the earth. Snuf, I’m sure I'm very silly, but I feel closer to you already. We'll see each other soon.
