Controversial opinion but as someone who's been raised in a quite mild Catholic way, went to Sunday school for ~8 years of life and ditched the religion w/ zero second thoughts, I'm quite baffled by the concept of Catholic guilt. I hear about it all the time when it comes to English-speaking Catholics (Irish and USAmericans) but I don't think we have even a phrase for that feeling in Italian?? And what about other romance languages? And even the concept itself like. Is it specific to the Anglo-Saxon flavour of Catholicism or are Catholics from all over the world obsessed with guilt and me & my family are/were never simply catholic enough?

#And mind you #my 94 year old great-aunt has been acloister nun for 70+ years #never heard her harping on the importance of repentance or going on about the awfulness of sinning or whatever #so not sure whether I simply lucked out or the Catholic guilt thing is just a scam or simply felt way more in some countries/communities #would love some insights actually
