Chuyao Collection 3
Summary: Youning and Lu Yao have returned to Shanghai. But all is not as it seems with the happy couple. Fair warning, not very Youning friendly.
Waking up hungover was becoming increasingly common for Chusheng. Waking up to someone pounding on his front door was not. Throwing his robe over him, he shuffled to the door, cursing his friends and their alcohol tolerance.
“Who the hell is waking me- Youning?”
Youning shoved her way past Chusheng, running through the rooms. Knowing better than to interrupt her, the man entered the kitchen, making himself coffee and setting aside a teapot for the young woman. Sitting at table, sipping his drink, he felt vaguely human again. Which meant he was prepared when Youning entered the kitchen, collapsing into the chair across from him. There was silence, as Chusheng enjoyed his coffee and Youning glared at the table.
“Aren’t you supposed to be with your husband in Europe?”
“We came back two days ago. I thought Lu Yao had come here, but clearly not.”
“Why would he come here?”
Youning scoffed, moving the glare to her friend. Silence again, this time less comfortable.
“We haven’t had sex since the wedding night. We consummated the marriage and then that was that.”
Chusheng was confused. It must have shown on his face because Youning laughed, a short, ugly sound.
“That’s not to say that either of us went without.”
“You cheated on him?”
“Yes. I enjoy sex. And if my husband would rather keep his own company in his own bedroom, then I am going to look elsewhere. Besides, it wasn’t my name he cried out in the dead of night.”
Slowly, Chusheng placed his cup on the table. This had taken a turn he wasn’t expecting.
“Youning, why are you here?”
“He only married me because I told him that I could protect him from his family. He never loved me. Not like I loved him. And I was so determined to have him.”
“You always get what you want, don’t you?”
“Not this time. I could never compete with you.”
Chusheng tensed, not liking the implications.
“Nothing happened between us!”
“He wanted it to happen though. You think I didn’t see how he looked at you? How you looked back at him? This was a marriage of convenience. But I was so happy to have him, that I just overlooked how unhappy he was. I thought he missed Shanghai. But he missed you.”
What could Chusheng say? He didn’t fall in love easily and when he did, he fell hard. It was easy to fall for Lu Yao. The other man was kind, gentle, a happy soul. He calmed Chusheng down from the worst of his rages and brought out the best in him. Chusheng wasn’t ashamed to say that he was a better person because he wanted to deserve Lu Yao. Who then married Youning.
“That doesn’t matter. He’s a married man now. Although, why did you think he was here?”
“He went for a walk last night and never came back. I thought that he came here to see you and spent the night.”
“But he didn’t.”
Looking over Youning, Chusheng glared when he saw how she avoided eye contact.
“What did you do?”
When she didn’t answer, he slammed his hand on the table, making her jump.
“What did you do!?”
“I didn’t mean to! I didn’t know who he was.”
Chusheng stood. He needed to step away from the woman in front of him before he did something he would regret. Taking a deep breath, he leaned against the table and made sure to make eye contact with Youning. Through gritted teeth, he asked again.
“What the hell did you do?”
“Have you ever heard of Heung Chin?”
“Of course I have. The leader of the Sun Yee On, one of the biggest Triad organisations around.”
“Well, he has a son.”
She didn’t have to say anymore. It was official, Chusheng was going to kill this woman.
“You didn’t? Jesus Christ, you know better than that! You promised him something, didn’t you? Or told him something?”
“I told him that I wasn’t happy with my husband, I guess he took that to mean take him and kill him.”
“And now you need me and your father to rescue him?”
“I’ve already spoken to daddy. He won’t do it without you.”
“Fine, but after this? You leave Lu Yao and I alone until we approach you. Clear?”
She nodded, knowing she was lucky to even get that.
“Fine, let’s go to see your dad. We have a rescue to plan.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even with the police and the Green Gang, it still took them ten days to find Lu Yao. He was kept alive, the young Triad member clearly enjoying torturing him. Youning had received a letter, giving her the location to say her final goodbyes. Seems like the man had fallen in love with Youning, unaware that he was just one of many.
Chusheng stood outside the door, Salim at his side. He nodded to the man across from him, who kicked the door open. He ran in, opening fire. He was aiming to keep the men alive, the last thing they needed was a war with the Triad. Knocking out the last man, he looked over to where Salim was untying Lu Yao.
“Salim, get him home. There’s a doctor waiting there. I’ll have to stay here for a while, deal with this idiot.”
He nudged Youning’s Romeo with his foot, smiling at the pained groan the other let out. Salim nodded, gesturing for the men with the stretcher to take Lu Yao.
“See you at home boss.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A broken left arm, all the fingers on his right hand broken, bruised ribs, cuts all over his body, most of them requiring stitches, a fractured knee-cap and a head wound. Lu Yao was going to take a long time to recover. That wasn’t even thinking about the time it would take for him to mentally recover.
Chusheng sat in the chair by the bed, watching Lu Yao’s chest rise and fall. He was alive. That was all that mattered.
“Chu-ge?”
“I said we didn’t want to see you. Not after this.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I came to tell you that daddy is sending me to San Francisco in two days. He thinks I need to learn to survive by myself without him or you or Lu Yao there to save me all the time.”
Chusheng smirked, he wasn’t wrong.
“But before I leave, here. This is for you, the both of you.”
She handed him papers, her eyes on Lu Yao.
“What are these?”
“Divorce papers. We all need a fresh start, don’t we? And you and Lu Yao can be together now. Without me here to get in your way.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re family Chusheng, you’re my brother. I’m sorry that I forgot that.”
Standing up, he pulled his sister into a tight hug. At the end of the day they were family and he couldn’t forget that either. Pressing a kiss to the crown of her head, he pulled away, smiling at her.
“Stay safe. Send me your address and I’ll be in touch. When we’re ready.”
And then she was gone. Sitting back down, Chusheng concentrated on Lu Yao once again. There were more important things to worry about now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lu Yao woke three days later when Chusheng was at work. Salim, who took over from him, sent a messenger instantly. By the time Chusheng returned home, Lu Yao was sitting up in bed, cup of tea in hand as he listened to Salim describe what happened.
Gripping the door frame, Chusheng ran his eyes over the younger man, breathing out a sigh of relief.
“You’re awake.”
“And home by the looks of it.”
Chusheng moved further into the room, saying goodbye to Salim as the man left the two alone. He sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to grab Lu Yao’s uninjured hand.
“What did Salim tell you?”
“Everything. Apparently, I’m a terrible husband and that led to me getting adducted and tortured, right?”
“Not a terrible husband if you never wanted to get married in the first place.”
“Hm, I guess not.”
“You ok?”
“Better now I’m here. And you’re here.”
Chusheng pressed a kiss to the back of the hand in his grip.
“I’m sorry. I thought that marrying her would keep me here, away from my family. I never wanted to hurt you. I love you Chusheng.”
Gently, Chusheng pulled the other man into a soft kiss.
“I love you too. Just think how much easier things would be if we just said that to each other, instead of all the flirting and dancing around each other.”
“We’re pretty stupid. And now I’m married and we’re nothing.”
“Actually, you don’t have to worry about being married anymore. Here, divorce papers. Your ex wife is now in San Francisco, I have her address if you want to write.”
“Not yet. It took me a long time to realise that we did not have a healthy relationship. But with how my family treated me, I thought that was love. Which meant that I ignored you.”
“That doesn’t matter. We’re together now. And we have the rest of our lives together, ok?”
“Ok. But right now? I need sleep. I’m exhausted.”
“You will be for a while. I’ll just have to look after you.”
“So, back to normal then?”
Chuckling, Chusheng helped Lu Yao lie down, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. He turned to leave them room, stopped by a weak grip on his wrist. He turned to the other man, running his hand through his hair.
“I’m gonna be right here in that chair. You can’t get rid of me now.”
“Hm, good.”
Lu Yao relaxed onto the bed, eyes closing. God but he was beautiful. Chusheng sat back in the chair, opening up the newspaper. Like he said, he wasn’t leaving the other man’s side. Never again.
