Revival of Live Music at Northlands
For a frequent concert go-er, six months without live music was really killing me. The pandemic caused such a disruption to the music scene, that musicians and fans alike were looking for alternative options. At least half a dozen shows and a couple festivals that I had been eyeing were cancelled one by one. I remember weeks on end of scrolling on my phone reading more and more depressing or stressful posts and news stories. I was desperate for some real fun, but what could I do during the pandemic?
When all seemed lost in the surreal times of summer 2020, hope in the form of a drive-in concert got my attention. “A drive-in concert? That’s a cool idea. Like a drive-in movie!” So I bought a spot for one car to see a fun band Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. I got three buddies to come up with me to the Yarmouth drive-in theatre. We were pumped. We got into the show no problem. Each drive-in spot has a space to watch the concert next to the car. I was ready to dance for three hours straight. Standing in our slot with my friends, the band came on. The crowd voiced their enthusiasm with all kinds of yelling and excitement. This was exactly what I was missing… and then they began playing. My mouth dropped open. I just stared. From the stage I could barely hear anything at all. When I say this, I mean that I actually had to focus just to hear the vocals, and I struggled to make out anything he was singing. There was no amplification whatsoever. The drunk people yelling in the row behind us we’re louder than the band. I could not believe it. I asked a staff member why it was so quiet.
“It’s a drive-in concert. You tune in through your radio.”
“What?”
So let me get this straight... I paid $60, and drove nearly two hours just to listen to my car radio? Unbelievable. I learned my lesson from the Yarmouth drive-in. I was very skeptical of any shows after that. My frustration led me to warn my fellow concert go-ers about my experience with the Yarmouth drive-in, both online and directly to my friends. My good friend Reuben told me not to worry. “There's a new venue on the scene in New Hampshire. It's called Northlands.”
Northlands is an outdoor music venue located in Swanzey New Hampshire, and it was just a vacant lot at the start of 2020. On the Northlands website the first thing I read was: “Experience Live Music Again!” Thank goodness. Now, to be fair, the Yarmouth drive-in is meant for movies, not concerts. It is located off a main road with a neighborhood right next to it. Still terrible.
The Northlands venue was initially called “Drive-in Live,” and was more of a temporary solution than a permanent business venture. However, Drive-in Live rose in popularity quickly and was renamed Northlands. Northlands was built for concerts, and surprisingly quickly at that. Nestled in beautiful rural New Hampshire, this outdoor venue neighbors Mt Monadnock and multiple nature reserves. Without noise restrictions, and an outdoor venue, they were able to build a music venue specifically for Covid-19 safety guidelines.
The music scene had largely shut down entirely, with some scrambling to adapt to the pandemic. You can no longer buy tickets next to other random concert go-ers. Instead, you purchase pods meant for the group you arrive with. Most venues that have been carrying out drive-in concerts (with varying quality of concert experience) have ticket holders remain next to their cars in front of the stage. This is a big waste of space. At the Northlands you leave your car parked behind the stage, and walk to your pod. A pod is just a designated area for your group which is placed in a socially distant grid. A 10x10 rope border held up on poles marks your pod at the Northlands. Northlands started out small, but scaled up in order to meet the increasing demand. For many venues, this would often mean that everything gets more crowded. New pods would have poor visibility and worse sound quality. However, Northlands cares about its concert experience. After summer 2020 they brought in a larger stage, upgraded their sound system, added bigger stage screens/lights. Food trucks, a beer garden and a wine vendor have been added to the site recently, helping local businesses. When you arrive at Northlands you park by the road in one of four lots. Walking away from your car and the road, past the stage you see open sky and forest encompassing the green grassland that is the Northlands venue. It’s beautiful. You are welcome to bring: lawn chairs, cans, bottled water, blankets, umbrellas, tapestries, even hoola hoops if you want. The feeling of being heavily regulated can sometimes hinder a concert experience. Some places are known to be particularly stringent such as the House of Blues, which has been nicknamed “The House of Rules.” At Northlands however, there isn’t so much to worry about. You can walk around the site (with a mask), but you are not required to wear a mask while inside of your pod. Northlands has gone out of their way to make the venue as safe and stress free as possible. With extra hand washing stations and no-contact procedures with vendors, you don’t have anything to worry about.
Northlands has attracted some great acts. Musicians such as Marcus King, a prominent Rock and Blues musician, and Aaron Lewis who is a country star. This summer Northlands is hosting many big Northeastern bands such as Twiddle, The Machine, Goose, Pink Talking Fish, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and many more. I have heard nothing but raving reviews from concert go-ers, friends, and family. The online music community has lifted Northlands high, and spread the word fast. The concert season is beginning this May, and ticket prices range typically at an average of $30-$80 a person. Keep in mind tickets are sold in 5 person pods, with an option for a sixth slot extension. Tickets and all other information can be found on the Northlands website https://www.northlandslive.com. If you struggle to remember the last time you saw live entertainment, ask yourself: “what’s stopping me?” I myself intend to fill up my summer with as many shows as I can find the time (or money) for. Hopefully, I’ll see you there.

Resident Evil 2 reflections
Tumblr media
One crisp winter evening in early 1998, my friend “Kyle” sat me down on the floor of his room, which was twice the size of my room, and fired up his Sony PlayStation. “You aren’t going to believe this,” he said.
He’d said that a lot over the past several months, usually in regards to something happening on the Sony PlayStation, and usually he was right. He’d shown me Resident Evilfirst, always calling it “Res Eve,” and it had shaken my very idea of what a video game was. Real actors? Real voices? Real emotions? Indeed I could not believe that something as juvenile and recreational as a video game had actually scared me. But the efficacy of that first zombie head-turn was undeniable.
Tumblr media
In the following months Kyle had shown me a Top Gun game with live-action cutscenes featuring the bald principal from Back to the Future; the original Dynasty Warriors, which was a 3D fighting game; Mortal Kombat Trilogy; and the Sephiroth fight from Final Fantasy VII where he destroys the entire solar system as a canned attack animation. It’s amusing in hindsight that these titles could ever have been lumped together in any capacity, but each of them was such a fundamental upset of my existing notion of video games* that it was initially impossible for me to discern any gradient in quality. With the exception of the live-action bits, I couldn’t even discern FMVs from in-game cutscenes, because neither concept had existed in my head at all. It was like if you’d gone back in time to the dawn of the industrial age and shown someone The Godfather and an episode of Married with Children back-to-back. However briefly, there’d be a moment where their reaction would be roughly the same to each: “THE PICTURES ARE MOVING AND TALKING.”
*Okay, MK Trilogy didn't exactly break new ground, but it made me realize my kopy of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on the Genesis wasn't very ultimate at all.
Tumblr media
↑↓ Keep in mind I saw these two things on the same day, prior to which the most visually impressive thing I'd ever seen a game do was accurately render comic strip characters (Garfield: Caught in the Act, I'm looking at you).
Tumblr media
On this crisp, winter evening in 1998, Kyle showed me Resident Evil 2, which had only just released. We sat and watched the Leon intro in silence. There’s a very special stillness, an eerie electricity to the original RE2 intros that reminds me of the ominous feeling of the air and the sky before a big thunderstorm. It’s the same feeling I get when I watch the closing moments of the Who Shot Mr. Burns? Episode of The Simpsons, that sparse tension that is equal parts quieting and disquieting.
I watched, transfixed. Finally, the game relinquished control to Kyle, and he ran through a fiery city street teeming with zombies. Their numbers seemed to fill every shot. Everything was wrecked and burning and overrun, a fruition of the thing the first Resident Evil only hinted at while locking you inside that mansion.
Tumblr media
Kyle ducked into an apparent safehouse and was immediately—seamlessly!—halted by a suspicious shopkeep with a shotgun. A dramatic, fully voiced conversation ensued, the shopkeep backed off, and Kyle was given freedom to explore the room until suddenly—seamlessly!—the horde crashed through the false security of the shop’s window glass and ate the screaming shopkeep alive, blood fountaining from his red-stained neck and torso. You know the rest.
I walked home for dinner at dusk, looking back over my shoulder every few feet, and marveled that a video game could generate such real-life fear.
Tumblr media
I got my own Sony PlayStation about half a year later and devoured both RE2campaigns within three days. By the end I was as much a survivor as a player, and didn’t entirely know how to reconcile the good time I’d had with the immense feeling of relief that it was over. To survive a prolonged immersion in terror is an emotionally complicated experience, and not one I’d been accustomed to associating with “play.” It struck me how much scarier RE2 was than even RE1. RE1 put danger in the obvious place—a big, creepy mansion; in RE2, the evil had spilled out into the streets and overrun society’s most guarded spaces—a gun shop, a police station. The voice acting, graphics, and environmental design were also significantly better than before. The point is that Resident Evil 2 was a special game, in large part because it did things early, but also because it did things well. It was the sweet spot of the original RE trilogy—it did things better than RE1, at a riper time than RE3.
I might’ve thought any attempt to recapture that magic would be futile, had Capcom not already proven the potential for such a thing in 2002 with the GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil, which was where much of the demand for an RE2 remake came from in the first place. The RE1 remake had very cleverly used the players’ nostalgia against them, subverting our expectations in all the most notorious moments. It also made modest but smart improvements to the game’s systems and drastic improvements to its audiovisual elements, and threw in a few meatier surprises. Basically it succeeded in an impossible aim: to make fans feel like they were replaying their favorite game for the first time.
Tumblr media
For the most part, RE2’s remake is just as much of a triumph as RE1’s, combining state-of-the-art tech and thoughtful self-reflection to make the old feel brand new again. The police station is significantly altered from its original layout, and yet similar enough that you feel like you know it. The more rote, later sections of the original game have been given new personality and contour—the greenhouse and sewer sections both stood out as impressively reimagined. The characters, too, have been smartly rewritten to feel more like interacting humans than archetypal action figures. Each one of them bore impressive nuance rarely seen in a Capcom title but crucial for good horror, in my opinion.
Tumblr media
The action seems to lean heavily toward the “survival” side of things, with even plain-jane zombies sometimes taking an obscene number of bullets before they stay down. I appreciate how this adds to the “dangerous” feel of the game, but I sometimes felt like it had lost a little bit of the fun factor I associate with the shooting action of the entire series. Still, I see this as a stylistic choice rather than a flaw, and they also give you a handful of unlockable infinite ammo rewards in the post-game so you can go for a more action-packed “victory lap.” (Note: @jbsargent taught me that term :D)
Mr. X is worth his own essay, but I’ll just say he was always one of my favorite things about RE2 and he’s absolutely my favorite thing about the RE2remake. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Tumblr media
Shortcomings
I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the remake’s glaring mistreatment of the A/B campaign structure. The whole point of this game’s dual-protagonist hook is to show the unfolding of events from two separate but concurrent perspectives. Here’s what happened to Claire. Now here’s what happened to Leon. The remake sometimes gives us this—Leon deals with Ada while Claire handles Sherry and the police chief—but sometimes inexplicably puts Leon and Claire through the same events, implying that only one of these campaigns is happening. How else can you explain that both Leon and Claire witness, for example, Mr. X lifting the chopper wreckage to make his chilling debut? What point is there to an A/B campaign if they nullify each other? They may as well have done away with the “2nd Run” concept altogether and just let you pick the Leon story or the Claire story. This is one of those things that bothers me the more I think about it. It didn’t affect me very much in the moment, but looking back I don’t know what to make of the story at all. Who did what? The 2nd Run is slightly shorter than the first, but I would have been content with something even shorter if it meant a more coherent narrative.
Tumblr media
They’ve also cut at least a couple of the moments from the original game in which Leon and Claire check in with one another, which I found to be enough to greatly hurt the sense of connection between the two characters. The moments when they do interact are great, but I wished there’d been a few more. They also speed through the intro movie on 2nd Run, employing a “Last time on 24”-like highlight reel instead of giving it the space it needs to establish the crucial atmosphere and character dynamics. I didn’t like that.
Camera placement is a debate that will probably never die in the Resident Evil community, and it’s hard for me to even decide where I stand on the matter. The use of fixed camera angles in the classic games was a stroke of genius that allowed the games to mimic the tried-and-tested techniques of horror film, but occasionally the shifting angles caused player inputs to get tangled, resulting in unintended frustration. The over-the-shoulder cam used in the RE2 remake and most other recent RE titles gives the player complete control over what they see. This is a much friendlier interface for the action sequences, but it also means the game can’t force you to look at anything. On my first playthrough, I missed four or five classic moments including the first appearance of Mr. X because I happened to be looking elsewhere when they occurred. I see this as emblematic of the sometimes conflicting aims of game design, where a game is both a plaything and a cinematic experience targeting specific emotions. I’m not sure there’s a perfect solution to this, but I appreciate that the game essentially operates like an autonomous ecosystem. If you miss the action it’s your own fault, but it’s true to life in that sense.
Tumblr media
↑ This is actually one rare moment where camera control is taken away and you have to look. Gah.
I don’t think there’s any fair way to conclude that the remake is better or worse than its predecessor, but I’ll happily submit that Resident Evil 2 is the best game ever announced via T-shirt. I think Capcom can look back with pride and say, "WE DID IT."

Gender and Sexuality Portfolio Post Three: Connection to Popular Culture
The Evolution of Black Feminism: The Yoncé Perspective
In today’s media, there are so many influential people that use their platform to promote certain, and sometimes hidden, agendas. They use music, radio, TV, newspapers, social media, and the internet to create a strong fanbase, and gain support for whatever motive. This status combined with use of the media can be detrimental to influencing biases in any population. However, media can sometimes be used for the greater good. When thinking of Black feminism and how it is portrayed in pop culture, one iconic figure comes to mind: Beyoncé – Queen Bey. Through her expression of Black culture and forward thinking of feminism, Beyoncé has reshaped the gender binary. The goal of this essay is to explain how Beyoncé has redefined Black feminism via revising the gender binary, specifically through critique and expansion.
Now, Beyoncé, being an international entertainer for over 20 years, has published many songs, videos, and performances. I looked at music from her Destiny’s Child days up until the late 2000s, but realized that during those times, she completely fell into the gender binary (possibly) to gain a larger following to the Beyhive. For that, I examined albums from this decade because her feministic approach is much more pronounced. The two songs that will be analyzed in this essay are “Flawless” from her self-titled album, Beyoncé, and “Formation” from Lemonade, her most recent solo album.  These songs make the most sense to analyze because they are like a Black feminist/womanist manifesto: they have very public messages of freedom and calls to action for women and men to defend the care and equity of women of color everywhere.
In the first wave of the Yoncé perspective, Bey promotes her personal beliefs of feminism (without huge emphasis on Black culture). Before getting into the beautiful and strategic portrayal of Black feminism in “Flawless”, the problematic retelling of the gender binary will be addressed first. Bey says, “…this diamond, flawless/my diamond, flawless/this rock, flawless/my rock, flawless/I woke up like this/I woke up like this…”, pointing to her large wedding ring and running her hands up and down her body (Beyoncé, 2013). This part of the chorus retells the gender binary through prescription; it sets the superficial standard of beauty and body type while emphasizing luxurious things that women should desire and achieve (Foss, Domenico, & Foss, 2012). However, this example is so minuscule compared to the dominant message of the song which revises the gender binary. Featured on the song is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nigerian novelist and feminist. She overtly critiques society’s double standard of behavioral expectations between men and women. The following excerpt is featured on “Flawless” and is originally presented in Adichie’s TED Talk, “We Should All be Feminists”:
We teach girls to shrink themselves to make themselves smaller. We                   say to girls, "you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim                 to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the               man". Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I                       am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life                         choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most most                             important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual                   support, but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don't                   teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors,                 not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing,                 but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual                 beings in the way that boys are. Feminist: the person who believes in the             social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. (Beyoncé, 2013).
This message vocalizes gender inequality and responds with a solution: feminism. What makes Beyoncé so influential for incorporating this excerpt into “Flawless” is that it reaches all age groups. It is unlikely that a 13-year-old girl will go on the internet and search this TED Talk. However, she is likely to have Beyoncé on repeat, which would allow her to truly internalize the questions asked by Adichie. Through music, Beyoncé strategically revises the gender binary by placing this societal critique in her song so that it affects any and every age and gender that listens to her album.
In the second wave of the Yoncé perspective, Queen Bey gravitates more to Black culture and feminism, completely paralleling her work to Black feminism. “Formation” has two powerful portrayals of Black feminism that both critique and expand the gender binary: the music video and lyrics (Beyoncé, 2016). Beyoncé is known for the visuals that accompany her music. Within the first few moments of the video, we see Bey laying on top of a sinking police car in New Orleans, LA, giving the reminder of Hurricane Katrina. It is a political statement of critique, reminding the U.S. of all the (Black) people who suffered and lost their homes and loved ones during the natural disaster with little support of the government to aid in help. A few clips later, Blue Ivy, Beyoncé’s daughter, and friends are playing around in all white dresses. This represents another critique to the citizens and federal government of the U.S. because not many people are aware of, or even care, that there has been a rise in the abduction of Black and Latino girls and women in the U.S (CNN, 2017). This is a second reminder to the United States that little Black girls, and girls of color, are important; #BlackLivesMatter. There is then a scene of Bey and other Black women sitting in a day room dressed in all white apparel from the late-1800s or early-1900s. This visual represents Black women in a stance of power; whereas they would have been slaves or indentured servants at the time, they are dressed in fine gowns, head pieces, and jewels with fans to match. Throughout the video we see Yoncé constantly changing her hair styles. Hair is huge in the Black community and for the Queen to change from a curly fro, to an elegant natural up-do, to box braids that pass the waist adds to the power of versatility in Black women. Lastly, Beyoncé gives the visual of Black feminism by the choreography of her and her dancers literally getting into formation and repeating the lyrics “‘cause I slay” and “we gone slay”. The women made solid lines and often did moves with synchronization. This is a symbol of Black women getting in line and preparing to boss up through their own personal attributes and uplifting one another as they make their way through life. This is a critique of society that wants women to compete and see each other as enemies. Bey’s choreography emphasizes the unity that Black women have simply by the identity itself.
The omnipresence of the gender binary is smashed and revised by Queen Bey when examining the lyrics to “Formation”. In lyrical analyzation, she writes, “My daddy Alabama, mama Louisiana/you mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bamma/I like my baby hair, with baby hair and afros/I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils/earned all this money but they never take the country out me…” (Beyoncé, 2016). In these lyrics, we see how Beyoncé embraces her roots and Black culture while mentioning financial achievement. The message here is that you can be Black, have financial freedom, and never forget where you came from. This is a general uplifting to the entire Black community. The following lyrics epitomize Black feminism in pop culture because Bey completely contradicts the passive and dependent role of women in romantic relationships:
When he fuck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, 'cause I slay (2x)/if              he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper, 'cause I                          slay/drop him off at the mall, let him buy some J's, let him shop up,                      'cause I slay/I might get your song played on the radio station, 'cause I                slay (2x)/ You just might be a black Bill Gates in the making, 'cause I                    slay/I just might be a black Bill Gates in the making (Beyonce, 2016).
To a certain extent, these lyrics are an example of the stereotypical “strong independent Black woman” persona. However, in this case, that portrayal is appropriate and empowering. Here, Beyoncé uses the expansion method of revising the gender binary to promote Black feminism; she describes multiple ways of being a Black woman which is contrary to the stereotypical roles of women in the gender binary (Foss, Domenico, & Foss, 2012). In a heterosexual relationship, men are expected to take care of women and be the financial home base. Bey, on the other hand, expands the role of women by making herself the financial powerhouse in the relationship. The last few lyrics are important because they are the product of Black feminism in pop culture. Bey positions herself in the same power dynamic that a White male billionaire is in; she takes on the role of the most entitled and privileged human being. Furthermore, she offers that possibility to other Black women!
In the first wave of the Yoncé perspective, we see how Bey focuses on the gender binary and its hypocritical biases. She addresses the issues without specificity of Black culture. This is to get the attention and support of all women followers. However, in the second wave of the Yoncé perspective, Queen Bey grows her feministic ideology even more, but adds emphasis to Black culture and the love of being a Black woman. This strategy was so tactful because she first gained support for gender equality and later highlighted the social issues around the Black community at large and how society has casted off Black women, all while empowering Black women to push past societal expectations and to be greater than what they have written us to be. Through revision, Beyoncé consistently critiques and expands the gender binary and gives light to Black feminism. Seeing her influence on such a topic effects any and every one that listens to her music and encourages them to take action in order to insure the equity of Black women and women of color everywhere.

What Exactly Is Guerrilla Marketing? Examples to Inspire Your Brand
Tumblr media
In its printed form, the term "guerrilla" appears to be highly intense.
It evokes visions of insurgency and violence.
When you put it next to the term "marketing," a lot of people say, "Huh?"
However, guerrilla marketing is not a combative mode of communication.
In reality, it's a highly unusual type of marketing in that it promotes brand recognition among
huge audiences without interfering with them.
What is guerilla marketing?
Guerilla marketing is a strategy of increasing exposure and, as a result,
brand recognition by promoting utilizing unusual tactics intended to elicit surprise, amazement, or shock
The phrase was coined in the early 1980s by the late business writer Jay Conrad Levinson,
who published many books on guerrilla tactics in a variety of professional fields.
Of course, marketing, in general, looked quite different at the time,
and while guerilla marketing is employed today, the ever-changing digital world is changing how it appears.
Roots of Warfare
When we hear the phrase "guerilla marketing," we immediately think of guerrilla warfare,
which makes sense given that this type of marketing earned its name.
Guerrilla tactics in combat rely heavily on the element of surprise.
According to Creative Guerrilla Marketing, consider “ambushes, sabotage, and raids.”
But how does this transfer into the job we perform daily?
Guerrilla marketing tactics rely heavily on the element of surprise.
It aims to develop extremely unusual ads that catch consumers off guard in the course of their daily lives.
Budget-Friendly
What marketers love about guerilla marketing is how low-cost it is.
The actual investment here is creative and intellectual; nevertheless, its implementation does not have to be costly.
Michael Brenner beautifully explains it in his essay on "guerrilla content,"
where he frames this type of marketing in the same framework as reusing your current material,
such as selecting certain portions of a report and extending each one into a blog post.
It is a time investment rather than a financial one.
Guerrilla marketing works in part by reusing your audience's present surroundings.
Examine it and determine which parts of it may reused to integrate your brand.
Types of Guerrilla Marketing
As obscure as it may appear, there are a few sub-categories of guerilla marketing,
as defined by the business ALT TERRAIN:
Outdoor Guerrilla Marketing is a type of marketing that takes place outside.
Adds something to pre-existing urban settings,
such as affixing a detachable object to a monument or displaying temporary artwork on sidewalks and streets.
Indoor guerilla marketing is a type of marketing that takes place within a building.
It is similar to outdoor guerilla marketing, except that it takes place indoors,
such as in railway stations, stores, and university campus buildings.
Guerilla Marketing takes the form of an ambush during an event.
Using the audience at an ongoing event, such as a concert or sporting event,
to promote a product or service visibly, generally without permission from the event sponsors.
Experiential Guerilla Marketing.
All of the above, but done in a way that requires the public to interact with the brand.
We realize that without context, the concept of guerilla marketing
might be a little perplexing, so let's look at how it's been used by a few other businesses.
Guerrilla Marketing Examples to Inspire Your Brand
1. Bounty's Giant Popsicle
Bounty discovered a novel approach to market its product
and the solution it supplies by placing life-sized "messes" across
the streets of New York – a huge, knocked-over coffee cup and a gigantic melting popsicle.
"Wouldn't a succinct billboard ad accomplish the same thing?"
you may question.
No, not at all.
Culturally, we're beginning to seek out any means of removing advertisements from our life.
That's why we appreciate features such as DVR and ad-free alternatives on
 streaming services like  YouTube.
This campaign, unlike an advertisement, is more difficult to dismiss.
After all, would you stop and look if you came across a melting popsicle
the size of your mattress on your way to work?
The key lesson is to identify the most pressing issue that your product or service addresses.
Then, create an unusual manner to convey that to the world, ideally without using words.
2. Deadpool's Tinder Profile
Some Tinder users taken aback when they saw none other than comic anti-hero and legend Deadpool appear on their app.
Deadpool breached the fourth wall and met potential moviegoers
ahead of the film's Valentine's Day premiere by posting "cheeky" photos and humorous profile content.
If a Tinder user "swiped right" and matched with the character, they  sent a link to buy tickets.
While Tinder isn't the ideal technique to build buzz
(confined to a tiny fraction of users, and you're technically not permitted to use the site for marketing),
screenshots of this humour soon went viral on social media.
The key takeaway: Promotions that utilize "interruptive"
tactics that offer unexpected joy aren't irritating.
3. Childish Gambino's Ice Cream Pop-Up
Have you ever noticed how effective free food can be as a motivator?
Make it a sweet treat, and you've got yourself a winner.
Childish Gambino most certainly had this in mind when he held his
 "Summertime Starts Here"
pop-up events, where he gave away free ice cream.
As people waited in the heat for some wonderful ice cream, a big speaker blasted Gambino's two singles.
It was an excellent approach to introduce fans to his EP, Summer Pack.
The major takeaway: Sometimes you have to entice an audience with incentives in order to get their attention.
4. The GRAMMYs Singing Posters
Okay, so this one isn't fair because it wasn't done "in real life."
But how awesome would it be if it were?
The GRAMMYS music awards program developed a video to promote the candidates for its Album Of
The Year category, showing what would happen if posters for the nominated artists suddenly started singing.
It may appear to be difficult to carry out such a task.
But what if you could make musical posters for your company?
Again, it's not like a billboard commercial since we don't expect to see wall of paper ads in
, say, New York City to start moving.
Now, we'll agree that this isn't exactly a cheap concept,
as it may need some technological labour to bring to life.
Even if you could incorporate a single moving
or digital picture among a sea of static ones – in a position where it would catch people off guard, such as a brick wall
It would catch people off guard and, as a result, capture their attention.
The main takeaway: Consider the items that your audience could pass by daily and have them do something unexpected and involved.
5. Frontline's Interactive Floor Ad
I'll confess that I was taken by this shot when I first saw it.
"Someone, get that dog out of there with those flies!"
I feverishly pondered.
Then I understood that neither the dog nor the insects were genuine.
The former was a photograph, whereas the latter were real people.
Again, this approach differs from typical marketing in that
it does not just plaster a single message somewhere that is likely to be overlooked.
It generates an unintentional personal contact that reminds the observer of what the product accomplishes.
The main takeaway: Consider how individuals can unintentionally engage with your marketing messaging.
While your product or service may not solve a specific need, such as bug eradication,
there are methods to include people in the campaign.
6. Public Breakup on Burger King's Instagram
Breaking up is difficult enough in person, let alone when it's publicized online.
That's what reportedly happened when one Instagram user commented
on one of Burger King's Instagram photos, telling a story about his "daughter" getting meals from Burger King.
There was just one issue.
This guy had a girlfriend, but she wasn't anywhere near a Burger King.
Many thought when the comments went viral that the entire encounter was orchestrated by Burger King.
And if it was, we can't help but admire them — what a way to push your brand into the public consciousness.
Burger King has around one million Instagram followers.
While we don't know how many followers the former had before this famous split, it stands to reason that it brought greater attention to its social media presence, at least on this specific platform.
People may have previously been monitoring the brand on Instagram, but were they actively discussing it before now?
The main point is that guerrilla marketing has gone digital.
Consider where your audience currently exists online, and then perform for them.
While we cannot tolerate dishonesty, we can appreciate ingenuity,
so don't be hesitant to utilize the comments to get people talking.
7. UNICEF's Dirty Water Vending Machines
I'm just as guilty as everyone else of squandering money on bottled water.
I don't have an excuse.
I've got a reusable one.
Even though my office provides filtered water from a machine rather than a traditional cooler, it remains a terrible habit.
That's why this guerilla marketing campaign from UNICEF struck a chord with me.
"What if those bottles of water you squander money on were filled with filthy water?"
it said.
It was a means of reminding the wealthy that in far too many places of the world,
whole populations lack access to safe drinking water.
Instead of wasting money on bottled water, UNICEF advised putting it into initiatives to deliver safe drinking water to these communities.
It accomplished this by erecting improvised vending machines
that sold bottled unclean water, with each button designated as an illness caused by a shortage of safe drinking water.
The key takeaway: Guerrilla marketing is effective in the non-profit industry as well.
While terrifying, tragic pictures are frequently an effective method of expressing your purpose,
there is a way to tell it that is less confrontational and more participatory for the audience.
8. GoldToe's Giant Briefs
Are you an underwear manufacturer searching for a novel approach to advertising your product?
Try putting a massive pair of underwear on a famous charging bull statue.
We can't possibly make this stuff up.
In principle, it's so easy that it sounds like fiction.
When the GoldToe company sought a means to tease and advertise
the introduction of its new undergarments,
it did just that: it casually placed these new articles of clothing on statues throughout New York.
While we can't be certain that this is the path GoldToe chose,
we truly hope that those bull-sized briefs were created from leftover production fabric,
making this campaign even more cost-effective.
The main point is to not over-think things.
What appears to be your most ridiculous idea may turn out to be the greatest one.
9. Fiji Water's #FijiGirl
One guerrilla marketing strategy for gaining attention in subtle ways is strategic product placement.
Fiji Water's participation at the 2019 Golden Globes,
when models donned blue and handed trays of water for thirsty attendees, is one such example.
But it didn't stop there.
Kelleth Cuthbert, a model, positioned herself in the backdrop of photo-shoots, successfully photobombing high-profile celebrities.
When the images began to circulate on social media,
people began to identify Cuthbert as a common denominator, dubbed her #FijiGirl.
She eventually became one of the evening's highlights, winning over admirers and attracting notice to Fiji Water's brand
The main takeaway: Your business doesn't have to be the focal point of an event to stand out.
10 BBC's Dracula Billboard
When I think of Count Dracula, I think of the ultimate evil, associated with anything that goes bump in the night.
The BBC sought to capitalize on this sentiment to advertise their Dracula program.
By day, their billboard was simple, with red writing on a white backdrop and a few bleeding stakes.
The billboard, like its topic, transformed entirely when darkness fell.
The stakes deliberately positioned to create a shadow over Dracula himself.
The installation was highlighted in Ad-week and achieved some viral popularity
due to its originality and skilled execution.
The major takeaway: When it comes to promotional materials, think beyond the box.
In this situation, light and shadow sufficed to communicate the message and draw attention.
Conclusion
These examples should motivate you, especially if you're marketing a tiny company.
Don't be scared to solicit material for these initiatives.  top digital marketing agency in Bangalore.
