Every school has their own share of rowdy people who like to cause trouble and break the rules. You prefer to stay away from them. They’re usually right at the centre of drama, fights and all that is bad so you stay far away.
But there’s only so much you can do when you’ve somehow developed a crush on the most reckless of them all: Gyehyeon.
You can’t control your heart and your emotions, and when you’ve found a crush, that’s it. You’re doomed. There’s no getting out of it unless they break your heart, because your crushes are stubborn and firm.
It happened when you let your guard down and ended up walking through a hallway where a fight was in full swing. Your head was down, watching where you were placing your feet, and you didn’t pay any attention to the loud yelling that surrounded you. Your school was always loud, anyway.
Then you were thrown back.
You had accidentally bumped into someone but they, out of pure rage and fury, pushed you back so hard that you fell backwards, dropping all your books. Embarrassed, you quickly scrambled to gather them up so you could leave that mess of a place immediately.
You noticed a smooth hand that wasn’t yours reaching for one of your books. Looking up to match the hand with a face, your eyes landed on Gyehyeon.
Was he going to steal your book? Would he throw it at you? Whatever he was about to do, you were terrified. A string of apologies left your mouth as you sped up the process of gathering your books.
“Why are you apologizing?” he asked, a serious look on your face as he handed you the book that he had picked up. “All of these idiots should be saying sorry for pushing you to the ground,” he said, gesturing to the crowd behind him who were focused on some sort of fist-fight happening.
He got up and pushed his way through the crowd to the centre of the fight, and you quickly got up to find another way to class.
That was it.
That was all it took to send your heart into panic mode every time you’d see him.
Now, you have to hide your face every time he walks into class with his coat hanging off his shoulder because your face is already red from blushing. You pray that you’ll never get paired up with him for group projects because seeing him face to face up close will leave you a stuttering and nervous mess.
But the universe has wonderful ways of screwing people over.
At the beginning of your new term, one of your teachers is discussing a super important project.
“It won’t be due until the last week of class, but it’s important that you get started now, because it requires you to write weekly updates.”
Your friend, sitting beside you, nudges your right arm.
“If it’s a group project, let’s work on it together!” they say, flashing you a smile. You smile back, excited at the thought of being able to meet up with your friend every week with the project as an excuse.
“However,” your teacher says. “Because this is such an important project, it will be done in pairs.”
An exciting murmuring rings through the class, but it’s quickly silenced by your teacher.
“I will be choosing partners,” they say.
Sighs. Groans. Cries of despair sound from every side of the sunlit classroom.
“Shush. Now let me list out the names.”
You and your friends cross your fingers, hoping to be assigned as partners by some weird powers of the universe.
“[y/n] and Gyehyeon. I think since the two of you have differing personalities, you’ll have a lot to offer one another,” your teacher says.
You turn around and find Gyehyeon a couple rows behind you, but he doesn’t even bat an eye. You sigh.
“Hey, isn’t that whole ‘pairing the bad student with the good student’ thing overrated?” your friend complains.
“I guess not. Seems like teachers still like that whole approach,” you say, turning back to your desk.
At the end of class, your teacher allows everyone to talk to their partners and when you approach Gyehyeon, he has his legs crossed and doesn’t meet your eyes when you talk to him.
“So um, Gyehyeon, should we set a weekly time to meet for this project?” you ask.
“Sure, whatever. I’m free Friday evenings,” he says, writing something on the desk.
“Friday… Do you want to meet at a coffee shop or something?”
“Yeah, sounds good,” he says, getting up and leaving.
But… you hadn’t even decided on a time. With a sigh, you start to walk to your friend when you notice a chain of numbers written on Gyehyeon’s desk. “This is my number” is written above it, and assuming that’s what Gyehyeon must’ve been writing earlier, you add it to your contacts.
Is this Gyehyeon?
Yeah. [y/n]?
That’s right!
Can you be there on Friday at 6pm?
Sure.

Nervous but excited that you’ll be seeing your crush outside of class, you sit in the coffee shop, awaiting Gyehyeon’s arrival. The white tile floors and the wood walls ease your mind while the tall, green plants provide some colour to the simple atmosphere. The smell of coffee is strong and a blender is hard at work.
When you open up your notes on the wooden table to start working, A lightbulb hangs low from above, lighting your papers. Suddenly, a boy sits down on the seat in front of you. His face is swollen and in terrible condition.
“Gyehyeon, what happened?” you ask, concerned.
“It doesn’t matter,” he says, running his fingers through his hair. “So what’s this project about?”
You notice that Gyehyeon’s dark clothes are muddy, and people in the coffee shop are staring.
“I really think you should get cleaned up first,” you say, quietly.
He sighs and rolls his eyes but stands up to walk to the bathroom to the right. After a few minutes, he returns in his gym clothes from school.
“So Gyehyeon, this project…. Your cheek… it has a cut, it’s bleeding,” you say, not able to start explaining the project. Once again, the pretty but hard headed boy sighs, reaching for a napkin. You stop him though, and pull out a band-aid from your bag.
“I can’t wear that!” he starts, but you refuse. Since he washed his face in the bathroom already, you quickly apply the band-aid, your heart racing with how close Gyehyeon’s face is to you. His cheek feels soft under your fingers, but you quickly pull away, not wanting him to get mad.
Seeing a band-aid on his face makes him look cute, and you can’t help but laugh slightly.
“What?” he asks, coldly.
“I’m sorry, you just look… cute right now,” you say, quickly pulling out your notes and wiping the smirk off your face.
While your head is down, you don’t notice Gyehyeon’s small smile. Nor do you notice the slight blush that creeps up along his cheeks.
By the end of the first evening, you’ve surprisingly made some progress. The two of you have a plan for the project and are ready to get started next week. While your meeting with Gyehyeon was mostly him avoiding eye contact and answering your questions, you’re not so afraid of him anymore. He doesn’t make fun of you for being ‘too studious’  like some other people do, and you strangely feel comfortable around him.

Returning to school after the weekend, many stares are directed your way and people lower their voices when you pass through the hallway. Confused, you just ignore it until you reach your locker and your friend throws their arm around your shoulder.
“Hey, aren’t you noticing that people are being weird around you?” they say, gritting their teeth.
“Yeah, what’s going on?” you ask them, looking through your locker.
“Yeah um so Gyehyeon got into a fight after hearing some people talk about how you’re probably gonna do all the work for Gyehyeon on this project because you’re a perfectionist…”
“What? You mean… he…”
“He picked a fight with them because he got angry hearing them talk badly about you, so now,” your friend says, raising their voice to say, “everyone’s acting all weird and I don’t understand WHY THESE PEOPLE ARE WHISPERING!”
You hit their arm, worried that they’ll get in trouble for yelling. From the corner of your eye, you notice Gyehyeon walking towards you from the right with his hand in his pockets. Quickly you avert your gaze and act like you’re still looking through your locker.
“Hey, [y/n]. Ignore all these idiots, they’re not talking about you or anything. It’s me, it’s my fault so don’t worry,” he quickly says before walking off again, glaring at a group of people who were clearly making fun of you.
“What was that?” your friend says, laughing. “Is he looking out for you?”
“I have no clue what’s going on,” you say, closing your locker.

Gyehyeon manages to show up every Friday and helps out as much as he can with the project. Despite having a reputation of never getting his work done, he seems to be diligent with this project, which surprises you. However, he rarely talks to you in school, and even when you say hello to him in the hallways, he ignores you. Well, that’s what you think, but your friend tells you that he’s probably just too scared to say hi back. You think there’s no way that’s true. Him? Scared? No way.
Yet your crush for him somehow grows stronger. Seeing him sit across from you every Friday makes your heart burst. He looks so beautiful in every way possible, and hearing his voice when he responds to your questions just makes your heart flutter.
As the end of the term approaches and you enter the small coffee shop, expecting to wait for Gyehyeon for what may be one of your last meetings, you’re surprised to find him already there. His black turtleneck and leather jacket that he’s wearing over top actually look clean for once. His black jeans are ripped, but his black Converses are also strangely clean.
“You look nice today,” you say under your breath, not wanting him to hear.
“So do you,” he says, his ears turning red. “So, are we finishing up the project or what?”
“Almost,” you say, placing a hand on your notebook to open it.
Gyehyeon places his hand on top of yours.
You look up and he finally meets your eyes for once.
“Cause I don’t really want this to end,” he says, looking at you with a straight face.
Your heart races. What does he mean?
He suddenly retracts his hand and scratches the back of his neck.
“I’m sorry about that, I-”
“It’s okay,” you say, quickly opening your notebook so you can talk about the project and change the subject.
You hear Gyehyeon take a deep breath.
“Actually, [y/n], it’s not okay. Do you know how much people talk about you behind your back? Wow, only now did I notice… People are so stupid, they say things that aren’t even true…”
“What are you trying to say, Gyehyeon? People gossip about me? I know. This school sucks, everyone in it sucks. Can you please stop? Let’s just talk about the project-” you say, feeling hurt.
Gyehyeon’s mouth opens. “No, [y/n] I wasn’t trying to hurt you, I just mean… If you let me finish what I was saying, I’ve been shutting up these people for you and they keep telling me it’s none of my business, but maybe if we dated then they wouldn’t say that, right?” he presses his lips together after finishing his sentence.
Your face, which was burning with anger at the mention of gossip, is now red with embarrassment.
Gyehyeon? Date you?
“Can you stop speaking nonsense?” you mutter, flipping through your notebook for no reason.
Gyehyeon shuffles forward in his chair and lifts your chin up with one finger.
“Honey, I’m not speaking nonsense. If you let me date you, I can properly get these idiots to shut up,” he says, eyes sparkling under his red hair.
“First of all,” you say, your mouth dry. “I never asked you to ‘shut people up’ for me, so please don’t go around hurting anyone. Secondly, if you only want to date me as an excuse to fight people for my sake, then no. Thirdly, we have a project to work on.”
Gyehyeon sighs and rolls his eyes. Running his fingers through his damp hair, you assumed he showered before he came, he says, “I actually want to date you, okay? You don’t look down on me like half of the class, nor do you try to start fights with me like the other class. It genuinely angers me when people talk nonsense about you and I don’t really date because people call me a softie if I do, but I really want to date you, [y/n], only if you like me too. I think I like you, no I know, because my heart has never pounded this hard before around someone.”
He takes your hand off the table and places it on his chest. You can feel his heart beat.
“Gyehyeon… this is too much all at once,” you say. You desperately want to say yes. Your crush likes you! Of course you want to date him! But you’re so nervous!!
“It’s okay,” he says, holding your hand. “Take your time for now.” He nervously scratches the back of his neck before deciding to stand up.
“I need to go… I’ll finish the rest of my part at home. I’ll see you around.”
With that, you’re left alone with your thoughts. I’ll do it… I’ll confess to him properly, too. I’ll do it, you think. I’ll do it!
