Happy Friday All!
In 2019, we took the kids (our twin boys were 16 then) to New York and I REALLY want to go back again and sketch.
I was lucky enough to be invited to be a member of the Society of Illustrators early in my career (in the '90s) and that was so cool. But since I don't live anywhere near NY... I couldn't stay a member.
I think having a place where artists can go and hang out, make art, and share their stories is just like a dream... until I realize I have social anxiety, autism and generally not a great conversationalist.
But I can dream... right?
Sending Big Hugs from the Hobbit Hole. ♥♥♥

“What makes their collaboration so interesting is how Colleen does so many different things depending on the tone and direction of the story,” said curator Kim Munson. “There are so many visual references and touchpoints, and so much range to her style.”
New retrospective of @colleendoran’s work with @neil-gaiman appears in Forbes (!) in time for the opening of the Colleen Doran Illustrates Neil Gaiman exhibition at NYC’s Society of Illustrators.

Neil in the middle and me at right. In case you couldn't tell.
What a day. It had been over ten years since I last saw Neil. I got weepy.

These two pieces got into the Society of Illustrators 65 Exhibition under Editorial thanks to the jury of my peers. I haven't really entered into many competitions, so it was a really nice surprise to be recognized. Many thanks to my art directors Ed Johnson at Foreign Affairs and Claire Merchlinsky at The New York Times.
The 1st one accompanied a piece by Jeff Yang about Asian American heroes in media representation, but for the main figure I made it a portrait of a family friend Yueh Chien, who went missing in the summer of 2021.
As a way of processing her disappearance, I wanted everyone in the world to look at her face because at the time I felt like she wasn't being searched for hard enough.
The 2nd one is for a book review centered around Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang, who was purged from power and public life because he was sympathetic to student protestors during the Tiananmen crisis. He served for 2 years as leader of the CCP and General Secretary and was succeeded by Jiang Zemin, who passed away today.
