I thought it'd get me several days to come back here with some thoughts on Muse, but it proved it's not necessary.

Who as title track makes complete sense. We're still into 90s nostalgia, but it's a recipe that works. Not just in kpop, but pop in general. Looking at the charts, it paints a pretty clear picture for the last couple of years. Add the zoomer idea of a what a Y2K aesthetic is like and we get the recipe for today's music and concept. Repeat, reuse, recycle. How fitting for postmodernism.

Who is a really catchy tune, with lyrics easy to remember and sing out loud. A tad more commercial-sounding than Like Crazy, but that's Muse overall anyway. The truth is, I have the song on loop (streamers can't come for me, lol). I think Jimin's style of singing and the melody itself are a good fit. Lyric wise, it's sort of basic, but this is pop music made for mass consumption. I don't mind it. It's also radio friendly and definitely has the potential for summer hit, but I'm 99% sure it won't turn into one. BH won't move a finger to send it to radio and it's another song that will fall victim to fandom mass streaming to chart high for one week. I've seen this all before.

It's also a shame to have this released when an artist is away, without being able to properly promote it. In my non-expert opinion, it could have been released as a single a few months later after Face and scratch the rest of Muse or keep it in the drafts.

As to the other songs, perhaps Rebirth (Intro) is the only other song on the album that has something to it, it stands out a bit more and it also bridges the two albums, despite the connection being sort of flimsy.

Having Sofia Carson on Slow Dance had brought nothing to the song. It could have been a full Jimin track all the way. Her style of singing does not stand out and I find it a failed pair because there's no contrast or voices complementing each other. Jimin can sing just like her. If a collab is really wanted/needed/necessary, then I'd wish for a pairing that also makes sense vocal-wise.

Be Mine is ok, but it sounds too much like that one TXT song and I simply can't get over past it. It's afro beat and latino influence which has been all the rage in the past few years, which Hybe has been pushing a lot. It explains the song.

SGMB and Closer Than This were previously released and I'm not covering them again.

I think it's difficult for me to not make comparisons to Face, considering both albums were produced around the same period, without much time left in between them. One is simply more cohesive and has a depth that showcases a first solo attempt, while the other one is clearly going a more commercial route with less of a personal signature.

Despite Muse being promoted as another conceptual album, I find that umbrella to be a bit forced given that the theme of finding love is really a generic one. Perhaps way too generic with not much individuality. Does it show Jimin's vocal range? Yes. Does it show him trying various genres? Yes. In this case, perhaps Muse is a bit similar to Golden in some aspects, with the difference that Jimin gets producing and writing credits in 5/6 songs. So his involvement is greater, but the scope of the album is in the same category as Golden, which is another production that had this LOVE as an overarching theme. But without much more to it that would make it stand out lyrically. The focus on both is genre diversity and vocal capability.

In short: I like Who (I also like Ace of Base songs and all those silly 90s pop songs, so my music taste is most likely considered bad, but I don't care). I think Muse overall is an amalgam of whatever is trendy at the moment, without being able to truly stand out and say more about Jimin, apart from his capabilities as idol/performer. Perhaps that was the point too.

P.S. My inbox has been closed for anonymous asks since I reblogged a few days ago my post about using lyrics as clues for personal life. It seems that it invited homophobia and I won't have that here.

I'm keeping it that way for now because I'm sure my personal "review" on Muse will either be seen as an invitation for people to either bash me for not thinking it's the album of the year or to be seen as an opportunity for others to talk shit about Jimin, Who and the album overall. I found that usually there is no middle ground with kpop stans/army/Jimin stans, etc.

Viviana was just a child when her father uprooted his family from Barranquilla, Colombia to New York City to join her grandfather in the family business he would eventually run. Growing up, she was the princesa, and apple of her kingpin father’s eye. Though she was surrounded by the family business, daddy’s little girl was always thought to be just that and young Viviana was kept as in the dark as much as possible when it came to his dirty work, deemed by her father a man’s business. 

It was a challenge that made his endeavors all the more intriguing to her. While her mother urged her to help her with dinner, little Vivi found herself sneaking off to get into trouble with the neighborhood kids. She was sharp, intuitive, and business savvy taking after her father more than mother. Quickly, she learned the ways of the streets. Eager to prove herself, Viviana used her cleverness to hustle kids and make a pretty penny. Her efforts only disappointed her parents, and the more Viviana was kept away the more she began to rebel.

By the time Viviana was 16, she was shipped back to the motherland in hopes of straightening her out and keeping her away from the threats that came with being a kingpin’s daughter. She lived with her Tia Carmen outside of Barranquilla learning the ways of the old country. Her seamstress Tia taught her not only the secrets behind the family recipes, how to dance, tend a garden, but shared with her niece her craft. Viviana learned the ins and outs of clothing making. She was taught how to sew, take in a dress, lower a hem, and practiced countless hours with her aunt. 

After living in Colombia for five years, Viviana returned to New York City not only with renewed sense of clarity, but a hunger to pursue a degree in fashion merchandising. She was inspired by her Tia Carmen and all the sights and colors of her family’s homeland, determined to integrate its beauty into her designs. In return, her father gifted her a boutique in the heart of Manhattan, not only as a reward for a job well done but also as another distraction in hopes she would be too busy with the boutique to concern herself with business dealings. 

But Viviana not only wanted to just run a small shop, she wanted to make a name for herself. She wanted her designs to go international, and to dress the most famous names in the world. And so, Viviana started small, networking and collaborating with other people in the industry and getting her designs pictured on D list celebrities. She attended fashion events, trade shows, and workshops where she met editors, journalists, stylists, photographers, models, and influencers peddling her designs to anyone who would listen. 

One editor from Vogue (wanted connection), took a special liking towards her and Viviana seized the opportunity to use this person for their connections. A couple dates here, a couple nights together there and eventually she was being mentioned to dress some of the top celebrities. She was even offered a spread in Vogue as one of the industry's new up and coming talents to keep an eye on. 

Now at age 30, Viviana is continuing to find her way in the cut throat world of fashion, determined to keep the momentum going. Since her debut, she has opened other storefronts in some of the major fashion capitals ( Milian, London, and Paris) and is willing to do just about anything to prove that she too has what it takes to become one of fashion’s greatest icons.

rosely was born in miami, florida to colombian parents, though her maternal grandmother is german. she spent almost her entire life in southern florida, learning magic mainly from her grandmother wisteria. it was important to wisteria, as the matriarch, that her specific branch of magic was passed down through her family, though she didn't stop rosely from learning the magic on her father's side. her life was mosly peaceful, with some weekends and vacations spent at her grandmother's property.

throughout her young adulthood rosely decided to explore the south, wanting to see what it had to offer. she spent a couple years in new orleans specifically, having fallen in love with the city completely. as a child she had a dream of running a shop full of supplies for witches, but upon coming to new orleans she realised she couldn't have that dream there. so she decided to work in one of those shops, happy to gain some kind of experience for what she wanted to do with her life.

there she met all sorts of witches and vampires, though mysteriously almost no werewolves. in order to find those she had to travel out to the bayou on the full moon, the one night they were able to turn back to humans. apparently there had been some curse put on the werewolves of the area decades before. it was in new orleans that she learned the importance of bartering, something she knew she had to implement into her own shop.

in her early 20s she decided to leave new orleans, this time setting her sights on new york city. she settled in brooklyn and got a job as a cashier while she bartered with other supernaturals in the area to get enough money to open up her shop. three years ago she was finally able to open up rosely's, a shop dedicated to helping witches and spiritual humans alike. she values both her supernatural and human customers. rosely tries to stay out of things, making her shop a neutral ground in the area. she'll sell to almost anyone, but if she knows you're up to nefarious things she'll quickly kick you out.
