Since I was a teen I've wanted a Ruger Mk target pistol. Other people would take me shooting, so I didn't put any effort into buying one of my own.

The first three generations of this pistol were difficult to field strip. The latest version, the Mk IV, is easy to take apart and reassemble. The price is still reasonably low.

Last week I bought this one with some Christmas money. When I told Matt about it he asked, "Squirrel problem escalating?"

It actually was escalating. However, I can't discharge a firearm inside city limits. The Ruger will only punch holes in paper targets, not squirrels.

The squirrels figured out how to safely walk around the two, then later four, rows of spikes I affixed to the previous bird feeder's roof. The rodents started coming MORE often, as if they enjoyed mocking me and my rows of spikes, before taking all the bird food.

With some more Christmas money I bought a new bird feeder. I went to a local store that specializes in feeding birds. Don't ask them about dog treats, cat nip, or aquariums. It's just bird food and accessories. I was dealing with professionals.

This model is guaranteed squirrel proof. It has a spring-loaded device inside. Should a squirrel manage to climb aboard, a piece of the feeder slides down and covers the openings. The much lighter birds don't cause the little windows to close.

During the first two days it was up I saw squirrels leap to it from the close by birdhouse. Usually they couldn't get a good grasp and fell to the ground below. One managed to hang on to the bird perches, but his weight stretched the spring, closing the windows, and leaving him SOL. They've since stopped trying.

I won.

For fun, I put the old bird feeder in the back yard, on my clothesline post. It's about 30 feet from the dog door. Ella and Sulley wait inside. When squirrels get into the feeder the dogs blast outside. The squirrels have just enough time to run to the safety of a fence.

The dogs like the chase. I find the situation amusing. Oliver rolls his eyes. He doesn't partake in activities he knows he can't win. Which is why he never wants to go to a casino.
