Wither and Grow out now!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You wake. You wonder why you’re here and what the world is like.
You hope for things and think of the future.
You wither and grow.
Wither & Grow is a solo journaling game. You are a plant creature that has just gained sentience for reasons unknown. The game is played over 5 stages of your life. In each of these stages, parts of you will grow and wither. You will document these physical, mental, and emotional changes in your journal. Your story may end early if your growth stagnates or becomes uncontrollable.
In addition to the game rules, you need 4 six-sided dice, paper, and something to write with. The entire game can take an 1-2 hours, or more, depending on how much you decide to write in your journal entries.
The game is a 32-page pdf with lots of great hand-drawn illustrations.
It is formatted to be printed as a 4.25''x5.5'' booklet. Please share!

This is a big day for me! It's my 10 year anniversary on this hellsite (affectionate) and the launch of my first TTRPG crowdfunding campaign.
I'm funding a print run of "The River Spirit", a solo journaling TTRPG about saving your hometown from an awful drought by sacrificing your memory to the River Spirit. You use a deck of playing cards to build up your memories of your hometown and community, tell stories about them to a cast of eclectic spirits you meet walking through the forest, and finally cast pieces of your identity off to satiate the enigmatic River Spirit.
I have to thank @crowdfundr for making this such an easy process. It was a daunting proposition to embark upon this journey, but thanks to their help it didn't feel like I was doing it alone.
If you're interested in the game, check out the campaign here: https://crowdfundr.com/River_Spirit

Taking a page from the Party of One book and setting up a game submission form!
Fill this out if:
you are a game creator who has published a solo game you'd like to hear me play on the podcast
you are a game creator with a solo game that will be published in the future and you'd like me to promote it prior to or as it comes out
Please be advised, I'm planning for Oct-Nov, and then taking a break until February of next year! So games submitted may not air until next year, but if you have a crowdfunding campaign or release date you're trying to hit, I'm happy to do my best to accommodate that.
If you're not a game creator but you have a solo game you think is cool that you'd like to hear, you're still welcome to submit those games to me via message/askbox without using the form; I don't prioritize those as highly but I do keep a running list to pull from for times when I need to fill an episode in my schedule in a pinch!

Turo-Turo: Analog Food In The Digital World
You are the owner of the last karinderya in the world, a quiet little restaurant lit by tungsten lights and filled with cheap monoblock chairs and plastic tables. Once, your corner was filled to the brim with noise and life, with butchers hacking away at pig jowls and vegetable salesmen elbowing each other to show off their greenest ampalaya. Tricycles ambled their way down the street as the tell-tale slapping of tsinelas hit the street, while the children played basketball in jerry-rigged hoops. Now? Now you live in a future of neon colors and pill intakes.
Turo-Turo is a game made in the Philippines about an increasingly digitized, gentrified world. It's a little journaling game about what it means to see the world change and still stay the same. It's about food and how it brings people together, even if society would see them fall apart. It's my love letter to the karinderya across the street where I've spent lunch after lunch with my coworkers.
It's a quiet moment in a hectic day. A place of calm and joy.

or as I would have titled it Online Block Tower Emulator bc it really works for a lot more than Dread at this point and that's why I'm sharing it
Review: ★★★★ ½
Simple, to the point, and works really well for any Jenga-using game, not just Dread! I'm thinking specifically of The Wretched / The Wretched & Alone particularly, which was the first encounter I had with needing "tower" *cough* blocks  -- I've been looking for a tool ever since so I wouldn't have to hunt down a set of blocks (or annoy half the household knocking them over by myself repeatedly) ;D
I will say it's a totally different SKILLSET from tower blocks. So people y'know, hypothetically, no one I know  who tend to kick ass at Jenga because they're good at figuring out which blocks are weight-bearing and slowly, carefully removing the extraneous ones without bumping anything, will not necessarily be as good at this game, because it relies on (after a few rounds, at least for me -- not too great of a console player-- very) fast reflexes.
In the context of Wretched and Alone games (haven't played Dread) being fast, well-timed and aggressive CAN transfer over to the situation, but since you're usually pulling a block to see if you survive some very epic death threat while you're very small within your situation, the combination of strategy and luck of block towers is often a pretty apt analogy. So, as I commented in my rating, it would be cool to have an OPTION of what amounts to strategic stealth over quick reflexive action. (On itch I made some suggestions when rating - maybe alternating levels where the point is dragging a simple block without touching the walls Operation-style, or identifying something in a puzzle, or something like that.) Buttt that said, that combination of identification and precision is hard to replicate in a simple game especially when it's being made for the sole purpose of being a stand-in! I can't code this shit! I can't complain too much!
Ultimately I'm happy to have ANYTHING with a decent mechanism to count block tower falls/successes -- especially that isn't a die roll/otherwise complete luck! And I'm absolutely recommending it. Even if I end up dead slightly more often.

Mandrake Sanctuary
It doesn't get a ton of page traffic, and I think people here might enjoy it, so I wanted to talk about Mandrake Sanctuary.
Mandrake Sanctuary is a journaling ttrpg that you play by collecting and growing little plant creatures.
The plant creatures you grow are all based on real world plants, such as the rose, lotus, or prickly pear, and they start out as seedlings but then grow according to the soil mixture you put them in.
Different soil mixtures have different activation requirements, and these can be anything from 'activates when you go to school or work' to 'activates when you exercise' to 'activates when you take time to rest.' When a soil activates, the mandrake in it grows a little bit, and you draw these changes.
To put it differently, with Mandrake Sanctuary, you pick habits in yourself that you want to cultivate, and you pick adorable plant gremlins that you want to raise too. Your mandrakes grow when you work on your habits in the real world, and over time you can release them, swap out the soil mixtures, and adopt new mandrakes.
It's slow-paced, cozy, and gentle, and the book supports journaling as well as drawing if you're more comfortable with words than art (or vice versa.)
Mandrake Sanctuary has been out for a while, but it got a big update patch a few months ago basically doubling its size and adding more art and more player resources.
If you check it out, I'd love to hear about the kinds of mandrakes you raise.

i released a li'l solo game!!! it's a little like guided storytelling—you'll write from the perspective of a character who, in a fantasy land full of wonder and glory, has decided to settle down and live a comfortable, ordinary life, and extends hospitality to the adventurers passing through. it's meant to be cozy and full of character development, both for the point of view character and the adventurers they meet!
it's $3, with free community copies available; they're replenished every time someone leaves a comment or a rating, and five star ratings do a lot for visibility on itch so please consider leaving one if you enjoy the game!!!
