From the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists have raised concerns about the potential for long-term health problems linked to SARS-CoV-2 and warned repeated infections are likely to increase the risk.
An association between COVID and cardiovascular disease emerged quickly.
And now — almost exactly four years since the first case was discovered in Wuhan — a growing body of scientific research is cautiously linking the inflammation caused by a COVID infection to diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's as well as autoimmune conditions from bowel disease to rheumatoid arthritis.
The virus has even been suggested to impact some pregnant women, associated with double the risk of premature delivery.
As the eighth COVID wave hits Australia, experts are taking notice.
...
When the first wave of COVID patients began reporting loss of smell and taste, Barnham's radar went up.
"Any time you see olfactory impairment it tells you that there's going to be neurological impact," he says. "Loss of smell is a cardinal, pre-clinical symptom of Parkinson's disease and it's been implicated in Alzheimer's disease as well."
The fact that COVID patients reported loss of smell not only during the active phase of the disease, but as a persistent symptom, suggested to Barnham that longer-term health consequences were likely. Loss of smell is associated with loss of brain volume.

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...
the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin
this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.
you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.
also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.
⭐ I have a tip jar (ko-fi)!

thinking about soap who can’t charm folks like price, or make them laugh like gaz or simon. he isn’t even sure that brand of company is what he’s in the mood for, anyway. besides, he’s too impatient. he wants to skip to the fun part, where his heart’s racing and blood’s pumping. and when someone catches his eye, he doesn’t give a shit if they’re alone or not.
the moment the seat beside you opens, he bulldozes his way through the crowd to take it. no clever line, no gentle request. it’s a miracle he remembers to smile. he’s halfway off the seat, slinging his arm around the back of yours, leaning in to catch your scent.
he doesn’t ask your name or what you’re drinking. doesn’t ask if the fella in the spot before him was a friend or a boyfriend.
“who’s yer friend? can he fight?”

i think that after covid (i know it’s not over don’t be a pedant here you know what i mean) we all should have been required to take mandatory social etiquette classes before we were allowed back into society like a driver’s license test but for things like “hold a door for people behind you so it doesn’t slam in their face” and “don’t be a prick to service workers” and “get off your fucking phone if you’re watching a movie in a theater”

after buck and eddie get together, eddie starts giving buck absentminded kisses all the time.
kiss on the forehead after he passes him his morning coffee. kiss on the cheek while buck is cooking dinner. kiss on the back of his hand as buck drives them to bobby’s house for a family bbq. kiss on top of his head while they cuddle watching a documentary. kiss on his shoulder while they sit on the station couch reading in between calls.
but buck’s favorite kisses? the ones edde blows him from a distance. when no one is looking during a call and they have to separate, buck doing evac and eddie treating some minor burns. when buck is pulling out of the their driveway to go meet maddie and jee for lunch and eddie sees him off from the front porch. during their family night out at the movies with chris in between them before the action film their son chose and they’re both probably going to hate begins.
every single blown kiss is always followed by eddie mouthing “i love you” at him, and every single time buck feels himself start to blush, the butterflies in his stomach staging a very chaotic and uncoordinated flash mob.
there’s something so exhilarating about knowing that no matter how close or far away they physically are eddie always wants to be kissing him. like eddie knows just as well as buck does that his lips were always meant to graze buck’s skin and leave behind goosebumps for hours to come.
even when they can’t see each other at all, buck knows eddie is thinking about it too because eddie does not go more than 3 hours without sending him little 😘 emojis. he doesn’t say anything else, doesn’t contextualize them because he doesn’t need to. it's just random 😘 throughout the day, scattered in between the rest of their texts.
buck [3:33pm]: got caught in traffic, chris and i will be there soon!
eddie [3:33pm]: ok, hen and denny just arrived
eddie [6:03pm]: 😘
&
eddie [11:27am]: can you write “chris dentist appointment” on the kitchen calendar for 10/17?
buck [11:31am]: done!
eddie [11:32am]: thanks, baby
eddie [2:16pm]: 😘
&
buck [10:08am]: we also need eggs!
buck [11:43am]: remind me to replace the lightbulb in chris’s bedside lamp
eddie [1:14pm]: 😘
eddie [3:09pm]: your amazon package just arrived
buck [3:09pm]: yaaaaaaay
eddie [7:24pm]: 😘
&
eddie [6:02am]: 😘
eddie [8:56am]: 😘
eddie [9:07am]: 😘
eddie [12:31pm]: 😘
buck [3:17pm]: 😘😘😘

we got to talk about this bizarre... pressure to be non binary coming from certain people.
honestly, i think its rooted in exorsexism/enbyphobia, which may seem counterintuitive, but hear me out.
when i came out as a binary guy, i wanted to test what i was comfortable with in gender presentation. i tried on some nail polish, and then my mum tried to say i was non binary... which im not, im a guy.
ive also heard of butches going through the reverse.
certain cis people learned that non binary people exist, and dont even know that its an umbrella term that has no set definition. a seemingly cis masculine guy could use he/him pronouns but not care about gender and so consider himself non binary. but some people dont understand how this is possible.
some cis people think non binary = androgynous or gnc, resulting in attempted allies thinking feminine men and masculine women have to be non binary.
these people of course also are weird about non binary people who are not woman lite. its its own form of exorsexism.
in my experience, certain queer spaces find masculinity to be frightening, and will pressure masculine people to be more androgynous, or even feminine. id guess that theyd probably find too much femininity to be annoying.
gender is a social construct, but no one is obligated to break it. i enjoy masculinity because it feels natural to me. pink is also a social construct, itself being light red, but people can still like pink more than darker reds.
gender is a bit silly, and you can join in if you want. if you don't like it you can opt out.
cis folk trying to be supportive need to understand that sex, gender, and clothes are entirely separate, unless you personally like joining them for yourself and no one else.
