This #20thanniversary reissue was an unexpected treat! Snagged the version with the liner notes that were autographed by the band. "She Paints Me Blue" shows up on Andrew McMahon set lists pretty frequently but the title track has always been my favorite off this album.

Jack’s Mannequin (@amnthewilderness) - The Glass Passenger ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Starting the day with an old favorite that happens to be one of my better half’s treasured albums. I listened to Something Corporate a LOT in high school and lost track of how many times I saw them live. Andrew McMahon’s voice is strong and unique, his stage presence is huge and engaging, and he’s got an uncommon knack for writing super catchy pop hooks that fit as snugly on the radio as they do being played by a pseudo pop-punk band in a crappy dive bar. I must admit, I miss SoCo because of the slightly heavier full-band compositions, but Jack’s Mannequin will always hold a special place in my heart because of the memories I’ve attached to listening to these records. I featured Everything in Transit several months ago because that album is one of the desert island records that I would have to save, but The Glass Passenger is one that is maybe even more dear to my partner. Andrew got sick towards the end of the production process for EiT with lymphoma and spent a lot of time dealing with it via chemo and all of the nightmare that is cancer treatment and as a result, his musical endeavors took a backseat while he focused on recovery. This album is a culmination of his songwriting efforts and victory over writer’s block as a result of major life trauma and it takes a much starker and more direct approach to dealing with heavy topics than EiT did. Sure, it’s not as dancy or happy or carefree as his first Jack’s Mannequin album, but it sounds like life wasn’t so great to him during this time either. However, there is beauty in taking the whole of life, for better and for worse, and making beautiful art of our the materials it gives you. If you want someone who knows their way with words and has a story to tell – read this book. @amnthewilderness may not even be 40 yet, but he sure has a lot of life and stories to tell and I was eager to hear each and every one. I’ve been seeing Andrew McMahon perform since the Jack’s Mannequin days and I still go to every tour I can. Andrew has always told these stories about his life on stage and its amazing to finally see them written on the page – and many of these I didn’t know. The thing is, he isn’t perfect and he shows that. He wasn’t a perfect kid, he didn’t look perfect, he drank and smoke and experimented with drugs, and that’s all ok. He lets who he was truly show through and how that helped shape him into the person he is today from a teenager in Something Corporate, to Jack’s Mannequin, to his adult life in Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. This is a love letter to the pianos who got him through the tough days. Really, he speaks to his pianos throughout this memoir – and I love that. And to the friends and family who stood by him, and those he parted ways with. Everyone has a role to play in your life, and yours in theirs, sometimes briefly and sometimes for a lifetime. He met his wife Kelly when they were just teenagers and seeing how she played such a vital role in his life throughout the years is a joy to read about – and his now seven year old daughter, Cecilia. Even if you don’t know who he is – I think his story is still one worth reading. I ended up grabbing the audiobook from Libro.fm and listening to this one – since Andrew himself narrates it. I loved listening to Andrew speak his story – and there are piano interludes through the audiobook which was very cool to listen to.
