How is moorti making art intrinsically connected to the spirituality of every religion?
Tumblr media
Spirituality is the spinal cord of every religion.
Let’s question ourselves to find the real meaning of the word Spirituality…
It is the process of re-formation aiming to recover the original shape of a human. Is it not?
And no wonder that every religion is epicentered on this aim, trying to make humans a little bit more pure, asking them to do a little more pure deed through the ways prescribed in their holy books. Through simple outward processes, a religion; centering on the above mentioned aim, takes a human on an inward journey to point where he or she can witness his or her conscience without any Maya (illusion).
Moortis help realize Niraakars in a Saakar form
Tumblr media
As you can guess by reading the above stanza that spirituality is a journey which needs you to concentrate immensely. Very often in this journey you forget the sole aim behind starting it because of external distractions that the world has to offer to you. So, there has always been a need of some sort of a picture, a symbol, a visualization of the Niraakar conscience that we are constantly striving to see and make pure on our spiritual journeys. And Moortis serve this purpose!
They physically represent in front of you the purest form of Niraakar as prescribed in the holy scriptures of the religion that you follow. After seeing which, you can go back to your incomplete journey of finding a purer self of your own i.e. Spirituality. If you were a computer, Moortis act like the F5 button for you.

Shilpashastras: the texts that defined the way of making murtis
Tumblr media
Let’s dig deeper into the ancient texts that are the foundation of Hinduism: The Shilpa Shastras. The oldest text was written in the first millennium BCE, but even now, they still resonate deeply and are considered sacred.
And the reason why? The Shilpa Shastras have withstood the test of time. They offer a blueprint for all aspects of living from architecture to sculpture and many other trades we may take for granted today.
 What are the Shilpa Shastras?
The term Shilpa Shastra literally means the science of Shilpa where Shilpa refers to any art or craft in ancient Hindu texts and Shastra stands for science.
Tumblr media
The Shilpa Shastra are sacred texts that provide instructions on how to make sacred images and icons such as statues, stone murals, painting, carpentry, pottery, jewellery, dying, textiles and others, providing a cornerstone for Indians to excel in the field of art and craft.
The Shilpa Shastras explain the art of sculpting (Shilpa) but this was mainly for the making of murtis (idols). Moorti-making itself is part of the larger tradition of art and architecture called temple building.
The Shilpa Shastras are ancient Vedic texts which suggest procedures in art, architecture and sculpture. These texts exceed in their practical nature: knowledge is transferred from one generation to another by word-of-mouth.
 Hinduism and Murti Art
Tumblr media
The practice of murti-making can be traced back to the Vedic times when the ancient sages resorted to creating symbols and images of the divinities they worshipped. It is believed that the sages would conclude the process by invoking each diety into the images through elaborate mantras and rituals so as to make a murti out of the clay/wooden or metallic statue.
These scripts have preserved the technical terms and correct instructions including the use of materials, the hand gestures of the sculptures and various stages of murti-making developed for the experts. It’s through these meticulous descriptions in ancient texts such as the Shilpa Shastras that we have so profusely and profoundly continued the art of murti-making over centuries.

What attracts us while observing an ancient idol or temple?
Tumblr media
In the world of advanced technologies that allows people to machine-manufacture whatever they wish to, in whichever level of complexity they wish to, a question that is obvious to come to mind is: “what was it that made ancient architecture and idols stand out?”
And one of the most important parts of an answer to this question is handcraftsmanship!
India is a nation that has the most amazingly carved temples in each and every of its state. For instance you have:
Tumblr media
· Neelkantha Mahadev Temple in Uttarakhand,
· Dwarkadhish Temple in Gujarat,
· Akshardham Temple in Delhi,
· Tirupati Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh,
· Golden Temple in Punjab.
And the list continues on…
One of thing that is peculiar about these temples and the murtis inside them is the handcraftsmanship. Most of these temples and the murtis were handmade by the Shilpins and Shilpinis of the time when these structures were made. A typical ancient literature which any modern or ancient Hindu murti-maker follows is Shilpa Shastras.
Tumblr media
Shilpa Shastras: The book that describes principles of murti and templemaking
While noticing a murti inside a temple or the other inner carvings inside a temple, you must have came across the precision in its surface finish and construction. And you might be surprised to hear that that most of the Hindu murtis and temple construction is done as described in ancient text called Shilpa Shastras.
The book deals with arts and crafts such as creating statues, icons, stone murals, painting, carpentry, pottery, jewellery, dying, textiles etc. Whereas, another related book, Vastu Shastras deal with building architecture for temples, forts, villages, houses and others. So, the precision and finesse that you see are a result of well prescribed sixty four kalas in the Shilpa Shastra texts. And that’s exactly what makes a murti or the temple construction eye-catching.
Sompura Moorti Art: One of the few idol and temple manufacturers that creates a sculptor based on Shilpa Shastras
Tumblr media
Shilpa Shastra is an ancient text and for the same reason there is not much knowledge about it in modern murti makers. But that is not that case with Sompura Moorti Art, they have a team of handicraftsmen who have specialized training and knowledge of these texts. They imply their learning to make your murti, idol or temple stand out like no other. The kind of dimensional accuracy that you get with Sompura’s hand carved murtis is hard to find elsewhere. Since 1985, the firm has been satisfying its clients with flawless murti and temple designs that are long living and easy to maintain.

Sompura Moorti Art: The idol makers that has been shaping formless gods and goddess for past 36 years.
Tumblr media
The inherent association of idols with temples
Have you ever questioned yourself;
“What is it that separates every other place from getting the recognition of a temple?”
There can be various answers to this question. Some might say it’s the carving and the architecture; others might point out the piousness of that place. But majorly there’d be agreement about one thing for sure. And that’ll be about the idol!
It’s the presence of the idol that generally makes us term a place, temple.
The term “murti” which is referred to as idol in English appears for the first time in 1
st
millennium BCE in Bhavishya Purana verse of the Brihat Samhita as pointed out by PK Acharya in his
An Encylopedia of Hindu Architecture.
Idol makers – the real artists behind flabbergasting idols
Tumblr media
The idol that you go to worship at the temple near you or the one that you have placed in your house’s temple is an outcome of painstaking forging done after immense brain work by some or the other idol maker. They are hidden artist that make you visualize the otherwise formless God Vishnu in Vishnuasana and the otherwise shapeless Goddess Lakshmi with lotus in her two hands. The snake-carrying Shiva, the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha and a lot more!
An idol is the real expression of Religion
-          Swami Vivekanada
