Ok but I really need to point out something about Sonic and Nine in Sonic Prime that I didn't notice the first time round.
In episode two, the Council is gonna use their laser 'energy extractor' on Sonic, and he genuinely thinks it's the end. After stalling with his ramblings about his friends as his 'last words,' when he realizes Nine doesn't have any sort of plan, he says "I guess this is game over." Nine looks at Sonic like this, watching what he thinks are the hedgehog's final moments:
Tumblr media
After trying to blow the laser out, Sonic turns to Nine and says his true last words:
Tumblr media
"See ya, buddy."
And it rocks Nine to his core.
Tumblr media
I think this right here is the moment when Nine decides he's dedicated to that hedgehog.

Shadows been stuck in Shatterspace since the beginning and the original world no longer exists.
Do y’all think if/when the lads (Sonic and Shadow) sort everything out between them, Shadow will join Sonic in going through worlds? It’s be cool if he did!! I want to see more of my boy!!!
Nine is captured by The Council, I hope he escapes!!!!!
Rusty is caught by the pirates, I wonder what will happen between her and Rose
Will Rusty become good? She looked like she had a big realization when she saw Rose

What's really interesting to me about Prime Shadow is that he reads as actively trying to sympathise with Sonic in s3e1. A lot of people have talked about the constant saves all episode and yes, of course. There's also something to be said about this Shadow's sense of superiority not restricting him to believing he's just physically better (This one is actually willing to run, for one), but I really want to talk about his expressions, in this episode.
Tumblr media
He starts the episode angry. Pretty much of course -- this tends to be Prime Shadow's default. His resting face already looks pretty angry, although I'd say his expressions when he's giving Sonic his "I told you so" are angrier than usual. His motivation is still about saving what of his home can be saved, and Sonic has just messed that up again, in trusting Nine when Shadow specifically said not to.
I don't think Sonic was wrong exactly to trust someone who looks and can act so much like someone who would never betray him -- it's naïve, but understandable. But to Shadow, it's naïve and foolish. Last season already established that Shadow doesn't have anyone he's close to, so it's going to be hard for him to understand, especially when he could sense Nine's betrayal a mile away. So he angers, and talks harshly and sternly to Sonic.
But look:
Tumblr media
SHADOW: We need to leave this world.
SONIC: You don't have to tell me twice.
When Sonic actually listens to him and runs when he says to, he's surprised. He's used to Sonic having his own agenda and not listening, because that's Sonic's biggest flaw in Prime. Sonic quips that he doesn't need the reminder, but yes, yes he usually does, and will still do in this case.
Shadow understands Sonic for his flaws, for better or worse, so he's surprised when they don't act up. (Yet, anyway)
Tumblr media
So he initially attempts to offer compassion, when Sonic sees the Ghost Hill inprints of his friends. He doesn't immediately go back to stern yelling and angry expressions; he offers out a hand and tries to understand more. He's not seeing Sonic's flaws for liabilities against him -- he's attempting to work around them for both of them.
Tumblr media
He angers again when Sonic doesn't listen and continues to insist of saving the Ghost Hill imprints, but look at the way he talks:
SHADOW: No! They can't be saved. Think about your real friends, the ones who still have a chance. If you want to help them, we need to get out of here.
He doesn't sound that angry at first. A little desperate, maybe, but he doesn't sound angry until his last sentence. His frustration's building at Sonic not listening, and he's having to reason against his own motivation. Does Shadow want Sonic's friends back? Maybe! We don't know his relationship with any of them in Prime. But we do know Shadow wants to get home more than he wants to save them.
It seems then to irritate him to have to use this line of reasoning, but he's not necessarily angry at Sonic for having to use it -- remember, he expected something like this. And clearly does understand Sonic's flaws and motivations; it's just that this time, he's not seeing them for why Sonic would be a liability to him, or why he's better suited to save Green Hill than Sonic. This time, he uses his knowledge of them to work around Sonic and keep his help.
He could technically leave Sonic behind at this point. He doesn't know that Sonic himself has actual value until Nine implies what he's found out about Sonic's shard energy later in the episode. If he keeps Sonic with him, he only runs the risk of ending up in the same place as the end of last season, Sonic having made the same mistakes. At least, that's how he could look at it.
But he does clearly care for Sonic. We know their dynamic is odd to others, in Prime. What we hear about their fights at the start of s1 implies that they are frequent, and also that both parties enjoy them. For better or worse (again), Shadow seems to now be aware that Sonic is part of home for him, and he doesn't want to lose Sonic. (a similar attitude Sonic had towards him at the start if s2)
Tumblr media
When talking about Nine's betrayal, Shadow's anger is not directed at Sonic. The easiest way to see that is simply that he's not looking at Sonic whilst talking about it, but I think you can also see it in the way he talks about their revenge. When he says, "And he will pay for it.", he sounds like he's attempting to reassure Sonic.
It's worth noting, of course, that Shadow has never really understood Sonic and Nine's bond. He couldn't understand why Sonic trusted him, and he won't understand why Sonic wants to reason with him in the future, so he does think that assuring Sonic of their success in what he perceives as a big step towards their goal helps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can also see him being not visibly annoyed at Sonic messing around, in both of these scenes. He's not hostile about Sonic's ribbing about saving him, or his silly teasing about the robot version looking like both of them. He's used to it. It seems he maybe even likes it, if not at least tolerates it. He likes, or at least tolerates, being around Sonic. It's just that his default for getting points across, or when faced with something he doesn't fully understand, or when provoked, is anger. He is not without his flaws too.
Tumblr media
He angers again when Sonic insists again on something he sees as futile -- reasoning with Nine. But as established, he doesn't understand quite why Sonic cares for Nine. He seems to make the same mistake Nine himself does in believing that Sonic only cares about him because of Tails, which is not true. He's biased towards Nine because of Tails, but we've seen him be excited about teaching Nine new things that Tails wouldn't need! He does like Nine for Nine, even if there is a flaw in there of him seeing Nine as an extension of Tails.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the reveal scene of Sonic as the final shard. After Nine implies something else has prism energy, we first see Shadow stare slightly surprised at Sonic. I read this a quieter realisation. He knows the connection between the energy and Sonic instantly, and looks at Sonic in concern as he thinks.
Then he makes eye contact with Nine, who only confirms his suspicions with something of a taunting glare. This is when he realises why this is important, and that he is definitely right. And then, and only then, does he anger. Not at Sonic again, but back at Nine.
There's a sort of protectiveness to it, this time. There's no "Sonic, you didn't realise this before!?", only an urgency to get Sonic out of there. Not both of them, just Sonic. He wanted both of them out when he had a choice about it, but now he sees Sonic as something valuable to both him and Nine. He wants to save Sonic because Sonic is home, but as he understands it, Nine wants Sonic for power and to jeopardise what Shadow himself wants. And so now, he sacrifices himself.
He knows that Sonic will keep trying to save everyone, and for better or worse (again again), he's who they'll all need to rely on. Honestly, Shadow sacrificing himself is a pretty big display of trust, for him. He doesn't have many other options, but... We know he believes in Sonic's way of finding another way. Rather than losing time trying that for both of them, he trusts in Sonic to find it himself, like he always does.

Not me realizing that if Sonic and Shadow got affected by the paradox prism like their friends did, we’d have two more Shatter spaces probably
AND THATS WHY ONE IS BARREN AND ONE IS IN THE BLUEPRINT PHAZE! SONIC IS FULL OF PRISM ENERGY BUT HASNT YET CHANGED, AND SHADOW HAS NONE BECAUSE HE DODGED THE BLAST OH MY GOD

NO BECAUSE GENUINELY WHY IS THERE NOT ENOUGH ATTENTION ON THIS SCENE......!?!?!!?!
The parallels to gamma and Omega make me go insane!! The council manipulating her and controlling her to do what they wanted her to do and what they wanted her to be. Rusty Rose is so underrated and I love her character progression like genuinely this was beautiful and the way the birdie LOOKED AT HER AND ITS LOVE FOR HER. It also reminds me of Amy in SADX when she took care of the birdie. So good soososoaosooo good 😭💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

It is SO INTERESTING to watch Sonic's progression understanding exactly what happened when he hit the prism throughout the first chunk of Sonic Prime.
First, Sonic doesn't even remember what happened or how he was involved. He first remembers the prism's existence and Eggman's goals with it, and assumes Eggman somehow figured out how to use the prism and took over like he always dreamed.
Then by the end of episode 3 Sonic fully remembers what happened—he smashed the prism. And he sees a chunk of it now in front of him. Nine, as he's figuring out what Sonic is talking about, infers that there's more shards. However, Sonic doesn't seem to assume this to mean there are other worlds with those shards (perhaps he assumes the shards are all within the New Yoke world somewhere, and the Council has just found one). Sonic seems to think here that smashing the prism changed his current word into a single new reality—one where Eggman rules. He also seems to think his New Yoke friends are his original friends, but changed somehow (remember his response when Nine told him to grab the shard? "No. You—! H-he—! The original you told me not to touch it!" At this point, Sonic doesn't know how to differentiate them.)
It isn't until Sonic is zapped to the Jungle shatterspace and meets his alternate friends there that he realizes there is actually more than one alternate Green Hill. He discovers another piece of the shard, which has created its own version of his home. This understanding is reinforced during his time in the pirate verse when he hears of the shard connected to that world. And throughout this part of the story, Sonic regularly talks about going home, returning home, etc. He seems to think that these alternate worlds exist parallel to his own original one. He catches on that these alternate friends are not his original-friends-but-changed; rather, they are separate entities that mirror his own friends in various ways. Now it appears that Sonic thinks his actual friends are elsewhere, still in their original world, waiting to be found.
THEN, at the end of episode 8, Sonic gets sent to the void where Shadow is. Sonic hasn't seen any other Shadows at this point, but because he doesn't know about Shadow's chaos control that helped him escape the prism-shatter effects, he has no reason not to think this Shadow is an alternate version. (While Sonic has been seeing Shadow in glimpses while running around, he hasn't fully understood what he was seeing. In fact, Sonic may not even remember those occurrences at all.) Sonic therefore (basically) tells Shadow to leave him alone, saying "I just wanna go home."
And then Shadow brutally adds a new level of understanding:
"Home? 'Home' doesn't exist anymore... because of you!!"
When we eventually get episode 9, I think Sonic is going to experience a whole new paradigm shift where he finally gets what actually, truly happened to reality when he hit that prism.
He didn't just alter the timeline.
He didn't create a bunch of parallel universes alongside his own.
Sonic broke his world. He shattered it like a mirror, making it splinter into a bunch of separate universes where none are the original. Like Shadow says, Sonic's world doesn't exist anymore. It's gone. And along with it, Sonic's friends are gone too. We as the audience have inferred this, but up until now, Sonic has not. Now that Shadow is here, this realization is going to hit Sonic all at once.
And when Sonic realizes this is what he's actually done, I think it's going to break him a little.

Do u think Sonic has nightmares of the SA2 ending? do u think the s2 of Prime fall reinforced this fear or gave him some closure? the anxiety of shadow falling and Sonic not being there to catch him lingers? maybe that's why Sonic is very touch affectionative towards Shadow
It fuels my angst loving heart lmao.
That scene single handedly DESTROYED me. Along with all the fics and fanart that came right after it when that ep of S2 came out hsjshshshs. The parallels are so fuggin tragic, especially from Sonic pov.
This was someone he had met in little under 48 hours, or however long the span of SA2 was lol. He's someone who challenged him, someone who, sure, wasn't entirely a mobian hedgehog--but one nonetheless, a super powered one at that. Who went from threating to destroy the world for hurting him beyond Sonic's comprehension to defending it till his final breath beside him.
Sonic's return to the ark without him will never NOT bring me to tears (yes I'm a big baby sue me lmao), he's still holding his inhibitor ring like its the most precious thing in the now saved world.
His goodbye to him; his closure--his understanding that, that was it. Shadow was gone. I don't remember the time from SA2 until Hero's but it was sure to be a long damn time, only for Shadow to just, be alive. MAN IT HURTS LIKE SH-- (I have a headcanon Sonic got to keep the inhibitor ring when Rouge gives it him later, and he wore it under his glove cuff all this time.) You cannot tell me Shadow didn't have a major impact on Sonic's life come onnnnn. I completely agree with the nightmares headcanon btw, like you take a hero with a savior complex and give them a situation where they FAILED to save someone they love and your in for an ANGST FIELD DAY.
Prime Sonic is a lil different from the Sonic's we've been introduced too in the past. (No this is NOT a complaint I love him sm, all Sonic's are amazing to me that is a fact.) He's probably the most physically affectionate one outta all of them. We see him describe his relationship with Shadow as "complicated" lmao, and for anyone new to the Sonic Series watching it, they're basically just introduced as rivals that are so fucking BAD at communicating. But you can tell he cares about his friends, and he really cares about Shadow.
This is evident in his PANIC ATTACK, when Shadow gets knocked out while trying to enter one of the gateways and ends up almost falling into the void. And this is right after they were just at each others necks, fighting for the tech.
There is NO POSSIBLE WAY it's not supposed to be a parallel to SA2, and if this Sonic also went through the "Shadow fucking dies and loses his memories TM" there is also ZERO WAY he didn't get flashbacks while reaching out to save the only piece of home he had, but Shadow's more than that. He grounds Sonic throughout Prime, he keeps him focused, he CARES about him too. Even if he has trouble showing it.
When it was Shadow's turn to save Sonic when he was fading away. Like, I WAS DECEASED, I WAS SOBBING--- ahem, I was carefully analyzing the moment where we got to see Shadow return the favor. Where he was mere MOMENTS away from losing him. He was in Sonic's place, back in space near the Space Colony Ark. Holding the most precious part of his home. His friend. (HIS BOYFR-- *gets shot*)
I like to think they both get more affectionate and open with each other, it just works so naturally well in Prime because of everything they've been through. And how the show, shows their friendship develop over time, even when Shadow gets benched for the majority of it hjhghj. He lets Sonic in, he makes the effort to hear him out, they LEARN TO COMMUNICATE.
Sonic wants to be near Shadow, Shadow in turn lets him, lets him be affectionate. Because they both really DO realize how much they care and need/want each other in their lives. They make me ill.

sonadow prime thought... i know shadow usually is one to keep his cool and focus on the task at hand. but after seeing that sonic potentially dying is something that can actually shake him,
i wonder if he would ever dare to do something impulsive if he knew for sure sonic wasnt gonna make it? a confession maybe?

Rough art, but wanted to show Dr Daria's colour scheme! (From here). Heavily based on her canon colours lol
For context, this is a New Yoke version of Maria who didn't have a version of Shadow at all and survived to adulthood. She's in her late 40s and thinks her relatives (the Chaos Council) are stupid and very much stands against them
