I would like to put forth another idea to the board of Sonic Universe directors that I think is most likely, probably, 100000% probable.
Managing one kid is a lot, and these two parents have not only ended up with two more kids, but one of them has an off the charts IQ and the other one doesn't understand that babysitting does not mean sit on your brother until he gives up.
WHAT'S MORE
Tails and Knuckles aren't really used to traditional, Wachowski discipline. They've never had sit downs, where they talk about their feelings. They've never had to suffer under their disappointed stares. Those things don't work on them.
Knuckles was raised a warrior, and Tails is under the impression that he can do no wrong.
So, in lieu of traditional discipline, I have decided that Tom and Maddie may need to start bringing emergency nerf super soakers around the house with them.
These new boys may not understand a Stern Parent Stare, but they sure do understand WAR.
The neighbors will stop by Sonic's house, watching alongside the blue hedgehog as Tails rockets across the backyard, shrieking for mercy, while Thomas Wachowski sprints after him, super soaker held high.
"What happened this time," the neighbor will ask.
"YOU'LL RUE THE DAY," screams Tom, still running. "YOU HEAR ME??? RUE THE DAY!"
Sonic shrugs. "Tails ate the last of the mint chocolate chip."
"GO FOR HIS LITTLE LEGS," Maddie screams from the roof.

Blind Stare
Another bit of writing from that a discord server I'm in. I swear I've done do so much more writing in that server than I have in my word document these past few weeks.
But hey, it keeps me sharp!
This is following along the same lines as the previous one I posted--Surprise Save. Where the group isn't quite too sure about Knux because he behaves in such strange ways.
Enjoy!
~~~~~
Tails tinkered with the engine of the Tornado, tightening and tuning and configuring to eek just a teeny bit more power out of the engine. She already ran at peak performance, but Tails was always eager to see if he could get just a little bit more out of her.
The fox was so focused on his task, it took him a while to recognize that itchy feeling on the back of his skull. That feeling of being watched. He'd become sensitive to it as a small child living back on his original island. When you're a freak, you learn to pay attention to that. It gave him a few precious seconds of a headstart away from whatever danger was lurking nearby.
Because when you’re a freak, and regarded as nothing more than a mistake of nature, there was a lot of danger lurking. People didn’t take kindly to things that were different. It scared them. And a scared person could be mean. Violent. So Tails always, ALWAYS, paid attention to that feeling. It was a defense he'd lost over the years with Sonic, but it never went away entirely.
The fur on the back of his neck rose, and a prickly feeling traveled up his spine. Watched. He was being watched. But by whom? Or what? He was in the hanger at his workshop, pretty far away from the city. Who would be out here watching?
Moving as slowly and casually as he could, Tails turned, pretending to search for another tool as he did so. His blue eyes flicked up, scanning his surroundings for whatever had sent his fight-or-flight senses into such disarray.
They flicked to his right and locked with the violet eyes of an echidna, sitting stone still and just . . . staring at him. The older boy’s pupils were narrowed to pinpricks, his kinked tail swishing in slow, short arcs behind him.
Tails' heart pounded in his chest. His ears flicked back and breath shortened, coming quick and ragged. Despite helping in numerous adventures, Knuckles was still a mystery to all of them—they hadn't known him all that long, and his past was shrouded in questions and unknowns. And more than that, he was just . . . odd. He behaved in strange, almost feral ways, and Tails' logical mind had simply determined it was because the echidna had grown up all on his own, without civilization or socialization.
Logically, his behavior made some sort of sense.
But when someone as strong and powerful and dangerous as Knuckles was sitting and just staring at you, all that logic flew out the window.
They sat and stared at each other for a long moment, and the fear in Tails grew. What was the echidna thinking? Sonic and Amy were in the other room, and it was just him and Knuckles here. Was . . . was he just waiting to get Tails alone? Did he see Tails as . . . as easy prey?
No. No. Stop that. Knuckles wasn't an animal, he was just . . . not as socialized as the rest of them. That's all.
Logically, Tails knew that's all there was to this.
Yet his heart still hammered in his chest.
Silence. Staring.
Suddenly Knuckles flicked his eyes to the side, back to the engine Tails was working on, before moving them back to Tails. The echidna scooted to the right, getting a better angle to view the engine at.
Tails blinked. Oh. Oooh. Knuckles wasn't watching him him, he was watching him tinker on the engine.
"Do . . . do you wanna see what I'm doing?" the fox asked, his voice shaky from the adrenaline still coursing through him.
Knuckles blinked, sitting up straighter. He gave a short nod, before moving quickly to sit beside the little fox. The echidna scooted close to Tails, his eyes sharp and watching every movement the boy made. Tails info-dumped on what he was doing, knowing the echidna likely didn't understand most of it, but it was nice to have someone who seemed interested. Sonic sometimes listened, but Tails knew it wasn't because he was actually interested or really paid attention.
"Were you scared before?"
The sudden question startled Tails out of his constant chatter, and he quieted, turning to Knuckles. "What?"
"When I watched. Your heartbeat increased and your ears pinned back. Your pupils dilated. Were you scared?"
Tails' ears flicked back once again, and he shrank in on himself slightly. "You . . . you were just staring at me. I . . ." He paused, pulling his lips tight. "A little."
Knuckles cocked his head to the side. "Why?"
The fox's tails flicked, and he shrugged slightly. "People don't typically stare at others like you were unless they were . . . thinking mean thoughts."
Silence. "Oh. I apologize. That wasn't my intention. I was simply interested in what you were doing. You work so easily on this machine, and at such a young age. Is that normal for someone as young as you?"
Tails shrank a little more. Normal. He wasn't normal. His intelligence made him as different as his twin tails. Maybe Knuckles hadn't really realized just how freakish Tails was. And now Tails himself had to tell him.
The kit swallowed hard.
"No." His voice was little more than a husky whisper. "It's not normal. Nothing about me is normal."
A pause. Knuckles hummed, and flicked his gaze to the fox's extra tail. "Then your second tail is strange, too. Does it hurt?"
The kit's ears flicked forward. That was . . . unusual. No one had ever asked him if his mutation was painful.
"No. It's just . . . there."
"But it allows you to fly."
"Yeah."
"Then that is good that it is not painful. I have seen mutations which caused additional limbs, and they usually caused great pain. I would hate to think you were in pain from yours."
Okay, that was interesting. Tails unshrank himself, sitting straighter as he turned to the echidna next to him. "Really?"
Knuckles cocked an eyebrow, as though Tails had said something strange. "You think I would take pleasure in other creature's suffering?"
"Oh, no no. I just . . ." Tails furrowed his brow. "No one's ever thought about my tail being painful. You're the first one to ever ask."
Knuckles lowered his head slightly, his own brow furrowing. "Is that inappropriate to ask?” His voice was quiet, as though he was embarrassed because he didn’t know. “I don’t know what's appropriate and what's not. I meant no disrespect."
"No, you're fine, I didn't mean that . . ."
Tails paused. This was the longest he'd ever spoken to Knuckles before, and this few minute conversation was throwing everything he thought he knew about the echidna out the window.
Maybe he wasn’t just some dangerous strongman who thought with his fists. Maybe his behavior simply was because he grew up so isolated, on what was essentially an untouched paradise. He was the only sentient creature on a floating island for as long as he’d lived. He’d never even spoken to anyone until Eggman crashed on the island. And yeah, he’d trusted the mad doctor, but really, it’s not like Knuckles had any frame of reference. Eggman was the very first person he’d ever met—how would he have known that the human couldn’t be trusted?
Maybe they had all been too quick to judge Knuckles. Maybe they were looking at him through their own unintentionally biased lens of living their lives on the planet, surrounded by other people, and learning about socialization and technology and appropriate behavior by example. If Tails were thrown into a completely different culture, he may come across as ignorant and strange, too.
Maybe Knuckles wasn’t as strange or different as he seemed. Maybe he simply needed some guidance.
"Knuckles, would you like me to help you understand surface culture? If you have any questions, you can ask me. I'll try to explain things so you're not so confused all the time."
Knuckles turned to him quickly, and Tails could see conflict flicker across the echidna's face. Uncertainty, shock, maybe even a little fear. Finally he pulled his lips tight, sitting up straighter as he gave a little nod.
"I would appreciate that, young fox," he said, giving the kit a little bow. "The surface is . . . confusing. So many people, with customs I do not understand. I see the looks I receive when we travel through towns. I am strange. But I do not wish to be feared. I would very much like to learn. Thank you."
Tails offered the larger boy a smile. "Okay. I'll teach you, then."
The two shared a smile and nod, before Tails turned back to the engine and resumed his ramble as he tinkered.
Hi tumblr
It’s been awhile since I’ve drawn Sonic characters, let alone written fan fiction about them 🫣 but I’m currently obsessed so gotta dive head deep into my hyper fixation.
I’ve started a new fanfic called ‘The New Wave Ultimate Lifeform’. It’s an aged up au that’s very focus heavy on SonShadAmy. More so Sonamy and Shadamy than Sonadow but I plan on having moments of all three ships sprinkled in there ✨ I don’t want to give away spoilers, but the title of the fanfic kinda gives the story away 😉
My goal is for each chapter I’ll draw my favourite moment from it, posting it here to tumblr so I can gain up my drawing abilities. If you’re interested in giving the first chapter a read you can do so on AO3 and Wattpad
This is a very early doodle I did for a Sonic Unleashed AU of mine where Tails also became a werefox. Haven't fully figured out the design and I don't have a ton of ideas for the story yet, but it would be fun to explore
Sonic vs a Hole in the Ground
While out on a typical mission with Tails, Sonic gets himself in a bit of a pickle. It really shouldn't be so much trouble for him considering all the dangers he's bested. So there's no need to ask for help, right?
General Audiences, Silly, Comedy, Action, Oneshot
Though the loose rock strewn over the land ahead was antagonistically jagged it did nothing to slow down Sonic the Hedgehog. In fact he found it quite useful as he evaded a swarm of badniks. When Buzz-Bombers and Bee-Bots swooped down he simply accelerated, kicking a volley of sharp gravel into their wings. The Motobugs in the corner of his eye fared even worse when their tires met the terrain, leaving them open for easy attack.
A series of metallic pops echoed behind Sonic as he landed on an elevated boulder. Looking back for the first time in a bit he saw the Motobugs shattered and the flying badniks crashing in disarray. Most of them at least, as Sonic noticed one particularly determined Buzz Bomber navigate the fray and charge toward him. He turned his heel. But he then relaxed his posture at the sight of his favorite yellow fox flying out from the side.
“Gotcha!” said Tails the fox as he landed square on the back of the Buzz Bomber and grabbed its head. Though the Badnik wasn’t immediately destroyed, the mischievous grin Sonic noticed on Tails’ face implied this was on purpose. There was no need to worry, yet.
“Sonic!” shouted Tails as he got jerked around by the panicked Buzz Bomber, “watch out!”
Sonic almost cocked his head, until he felt a rumble in the rock. A quick glance  behind showed a large purple centipede-like badnik shooting out of the ground, ready to lunge with sharp pincers. Though the sound of buzzing closing in implied that this wasn’t all Tails was warning about.
With a quick hop, Sonic gracefully landed on another boulder, evading the Centipede’s attack with a whole second to spare. Then with a great fall and a kick from Tails the Buzz Bomber clumsily crashed into the Centipede.
The resulting explosion of shrapnel made a decently cool backdrop for Tails as he landed before it. Though he took an aloof pose, his eyes told Sonic that he wouldn’t mind some praise.
“Cool maneuver and nice landing bud,” said Sonic.
“It was nothing,” said Tails, “...was the explosion cool?”
“Yeah, you shoulda seen it.”
“No…” Tails squinted as he looked ahead to an inclining ridge, “I’ve grown too tough to care.”
Sonic let out a snicker. The annoyed look on Tails’ face made him stifle it, at least until he too broke and let out a giggle. What a funny little guy.
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of something rolling toward them from the ridgeline above. It seemed a blue ball shaped badnik was speeding toward them, an opportunistic Roller.
Before he took off running, Sonic felt another tremor in the boulder beneath him. These badniks really do tend to blow their surprise factor at the last second. So Sonic decided to follow Tails’ bit now, putting his arms on his back and leaning away casually right before either bot could get him.
With a loud reverberating thunk, the Roller hit the boulder just to be launched into the air by a Centipede bursting from the ground. The Roller flew like a cannonball all the way up into the cosmos. Well Sonic figured it would probably land somewhere, but it was out of his vision range pretty quick. He turned to face the Centipede and it faced him… for a moment. Then it was crushed under the boulder it had launched straight up into the air, segments of its body flying every which way.
“...Huh,” is all Sonic could say.
A whine turned Sonic's attention to Tails. Well, it turned out to be more of a muffled giggle as Tails completely broke down in a laughing fit. Soon he was bent over clearly trying to catch his breath amidst his unrelenting cackling. Everytime it seemed he was about to regain his composure, he spit up another howling laugh.
“Huh…” said Sonic as he patted Tails on the back, “you gonna survive or do I gotta shake you around a bit?”
“Ye-yeah, I jus-Pfft!” Tails coughed and gasped, “The rock just- perfectly vertical! And, and-”
“Yeah, that was pretty funny,” said Sonic, feeling a spot of envy for how much amusement Tails found in this.
“I… I really hope Eggman saw that somehow! Just imagine his fa-PFFT!” Tails now covered his mouth as he tried to stifle his cackling. “I’m sorry! We-we should get going.”
“I’ll give you another minute to actually breathe some air.”
“No no! I’m-” Tails coughed and hit his chest, “I’m good! We should hurry!”
“Hurry? If you say so…” said Sonic.
Walking far enough from Tails, Sonic gave him a smirk before peeling out on the loose gravel. This kicked a barrage of sharp pebbles into the air and he felt himself dig at least a foot into the ground before catching enough traction to launch forward. Of course he looked back before getting too far ahead.
Luckily it seemed Tails had recovered enough to accept this challenge, taking off in an all out sprint as he wound up his tails. Soon he was actually catching up, despite his clearly labored breathing. “Show off!!”
“You know I’m not even showing off yet!”
“Prove it!!!” shouted Tails.
And so Sonic went about proving it. As they bounded across this land, which was mostly barren of plant life, more badniks made an effort to slow him down. Unfortunately for them Sonic was showing off, as was Tails. He easily dodged a few attacks and sped past several more badniks before they could even try. This led to many attempting in vain to chase after him.
In their focus on Sonic, they were left completely open to assault by Tails. Every so often Sonic glanced behind to see Tails pouncing on bots that had lined themselves up perfectly. For the most part though the sound of crashing and robotic deconstruction behind him kept Sonic content that Tails was keeping up.
Soon one tall tower, for some purpose Sonic didn’t care to know, loomed ahead of them atop the tallest ridge. As usual, Eggman had spoiled the nature of his traps and surprises before this last gauntlet. Every hidden centipede Badnik met a terrible, sometimes embarrassing fate. In short order Sonic found himself standing in front of the big logo of Eggman's face at the base of the tower. Before he could even ask Tails the best way to demolish it, the fox showed up with a stampede of bomb armed Badniks, all of whom armed their weapons once Sonic was in their line of sight.
The plan was obvious. Sonic waited long enough before dodging to allow Eggman’s own machines to do this job themselves. In short order a series of massive explosions rocked the ridge, sending metal scrap and sharp rocks flying everywhere. A series of cracks ran down the sides of this rocky hill as the tower buckled and tumbled over. It almost brought the whole ridge down with it as it collapsed, its pieces rolling down the ridge into a valley below.
“We… may have gone a bit overboard,” said Sonic.
“To be fair,” said Tails as he landed next to Sonic, “this is Eggman’s fault for giving those bots such high-yield explosives.”
“Kinda seems like he’s upset with us or something.”
“What? No! He loves you!”
“Aww, thanks pal,” Sonic ruffled the fur on Tails’ head, “you just saved my self-esteem.”
“Oh it’s nothing. All I had to do was lie!”
Sonic let out a “snrk!”
A look of astonishment overcame Tails’ face. “Oh! I got you to laugh first!!!”
“If that was a laugh,” Sonic poked Tails’ nose, “then that cackling fit of yours earlier was some sort of super extra dimensional laugh!”
“It was just a little titter.”
“A what?!”
“It means giggle.”
“Who’d you pick that up from?”
“Thesaurus.”
Sonic took note that he needed to have a word with that thesaurus. Though admittedly he wasn’t sure that ‘titter’ was an inappropriate word, but it sounded like it should be.
“Y’know, there’s a good view up here,” said Tails as he looked across the landscape from this high ridge.
Of course the view wasn’t the best one they’d seen. Most of this landscape was gravel, stone hills, and abandoned quarries. But the funky shapes of the many sharp rocks jutting out of the land was worth a couple seconds to behold. After exactly five, Sonic felt quite ready to change the scenery. “Well Egghead's choice of scenery made us land a good ways away, how fast do you think we can get back?”
“If there aren’t any more hidden badniks, probably three minutes and… thirty seconds, for me.” Tails turned to Sonic with a sly smile. “For you, three minutes and forty seconds.”
“Woah!” Sonic folded his arms, “feeling overconfident are we?”
“In this terrain my flight will give me an unfair advantage.”
“You’re saying this after seeing me show off?” Sonic leaned over the edge of the ridge and looked down, “you really are confident.”
“If you’re worried, feel free to have one of your mid-adventure naps instead.”
“Oh no bro, we’re gonna test this theory of yours.”
“Don’t be upset when I’m right.” Tails shrugged casually but the flicking of his tails showed Sonic how excited he was.
With nothing left to say, the two of them readied on the edge of the ridge. They took a dramatic pause before taking off, which gave Sonic a chance to actually consider the path ahead. Directly below was that valley, now home to a scattering of debris. But among the stone of the descent he spotted a few conveniently ramp shaped rocks. From one of those he could gain enough altitude to reach a favorable path on the other side of the valley. Then with some effort he could leap between high points and boulders on a steady decline, no obstacles to slow his momentum.
“Ready?” said Sonic, focused on the point he planned to land.
“Yup.”
Sonic gave a countdown and on three they were off. Side by side they accelerated down the ridge toward the rock ramps. After checking his target ramp, Sonic couldn’t help but glance at Tails and notice the sheer determination on his face. For a moment he felt hope that Tails would win, until he remembered who the other contestant was.
Suddenly Tails turned towards a ramp shaped rock and Sonic remembered to look at his path. His ramp was upon him already, but he could easily turn and-! Something gave out under Sonic's feet and he skidded right past the ramp. He tried to stop, but saw a small landslide was following close behind. Forward then! Though directly ahead was a large chunk of the tower, hot sparks flying off of its surface.
With a gasp Sonic hesitated, then accelerated again. He could make it over this! Gaining as much speed as he could, he jumped and let his momentum carry him right over the debris. But the valley ridge on the approaching side looked less stable and more vertical than the last one. Even as he kicked his legs into a run before hitting the gravel there was no traction to be had. All Sonic managed to do was create yet another landslide as he steadily slide backward toward the bottom of the Valley.
“Oh Come on! Come on!” muttered Sonic as he ran faster. While he should’ve seen it coming, eventually one of his legs slipped too far and he faceplanted into the gravel. The ensuing landslide carried his disoriented body down to the valley. Honestly he felt a sense of relief when his moment halted with a thud. The best move now seemed to be to let the convening landslides bury him.
That would be irresponsible though, and not the cool kind. So after taking a moment to grumble, Sonic scrambled to his feet and dug himself out of the gravel and dirt. Directly above him hung a large chunk of debris, all around him was loose rock, and to his sides were steep inclines. Okay, he’s made it out of worse. But there wasn’t any more time to spare if he wanted to have any hope of beating Tails.
“Alright, let’s go!” Sonic lifted his legs out of the gravel and got ready to jump. Though one step was just unsteady enough for his right leg to slip back into under the rocks. In fact it fell deeper than he thought it should’ve. He grunted, taking solace in knowing Tails wasn’t here as he lifted his leg. But his leg didn’t lift as some unmoving stone clamped on both sides of his ankle.
“Oh what the heck,” said Sonic as he looked down. He gave his leg a hefty tug, but felt a sudden sharp pain in his ankle. “Ow! Sh-heck! What the heck?!”
Sonic wasn’t panicking yet, there wasn’t a need to. He just needed to dig out the gravel and move whatever heavy rocks were holding him down. It took an agonizingly long five seconds, but he managed to throw all the gravel in his immediate vicinity away. Instead of bigger rocks however, he found a crack in the solid stone beneath him. It was filled to the brim with gravel before and after his leg and didn’t seem to have nearly enough clearance for his foot.
“How the heck?! Eugh!!” Sonic tried tugging on his leg again. “Okay okay, I got into this mess, I can get out.”
Seconds turned to minutes and Sonic’s careful pulling turned to frenzied wrenching. The last thing he wanted was to injure his leg in this process, but some sort of primordial, bestial instinct was taking hold. He was stuck and he needed to stop being not free. But at what cost, he wondered, as his eyes kept drifting to some nearby sharp metal shrapnel.
“Sonic?!” shouted the distant voice of Tails, pulling Sonic out of his primitive fears and into more advanced social anxieties.
A look up revealed that Tails was flying between platforms of stone overhead, looking around with a concerned look on his face. It wouldn’t take long for him to see Sonic stuck helplessly.
“Uh…” Sonic lied down and assumed the most casual pose he could while covering his stuck leg. “Down here pal!”
“Sonic!” shouted Tails with a tone of elation. As he hurried down to the valley though, Sonic noticed his face showed less concern and more outrage.  “Sonic!!!” Tails’ tone was definitely more pointed now.
“What’s up?”
Tails landed in front of Sonic and scowled. “I thought we were taking that seriously!! What are you doing?!”
“Oh, uh…” Sonic glanced around the environment for a second, “I actually wanted to take a break. Besides, you said this place had a great view.”
Tails’ mouth hung open as he looked at all of the dull rock and ugly wreckage around them. He didn’t even say anything, instead gesturing sharply at the scene.
“Okay, you got me,” said Sonic, as he still searched for an excuse less embarrassing than the truth. A glance up at the wreckage hanging overhead actually gave him an idea. “I also got thinking, maybe I should try and clean this up a bit better.”
Tails looked up at the chunk of tower, “Oh, I guess that is a falling hazard… Why didn’t you say something?”
“You were like, way too fast and got out of earshot.”
“Oh yeah I was pretty in the zone,” said Tails as he put a hand to his chin, examining the wreckage. “This’ll be hard to dislodge with sheer force though, it’s dug deep in both sides of this crevasse.”
“Yeah that’s a good point, you got anything that might help?”
“No, well, maybe…”
Tails turned away from Sonic, pacing and muttering to himself. So Sonic kept an eye on him as he made another quick attempt to yank his leg free. This wasn’t successful before Sonic had to reassume his casual pose as Tails turned back around.
“Oh yeah! I brought my compact electro-magnet! It might apply enough force so that you can knock this mess the rest of the way down.”
“Magnets are pretty cool,” said Sonic as he wiped his nose. Evidently he was getting stressed enough to trigger his hay fever. “Why don’t you run and get that real quick, I’ll make sure no critters wander under here.”
“Oh, so you’re admitting I’d get there faster?”
“No. I don’t know what your mini-magnet looks like.”
“Sure, sure,” said Tails with a frankly annoying nod, “I’ll be back before you get a cramp from laying there.”
“What?”
Tails snickered to himself as he took off flying up the side of the valley. Now if only Sonic could get himself free without losing his ability to run. He leaned over and dug at the crack some more, but no amount of clawing made a difference.
As he pushed some gravel away though, a loose cable came uncovered within reach. Hope filled his nerves as Sonic quickly grabbed the cable and started pulling on it. Unfortunately it was completely loose, giving no anchor for him to lift himself free. Still he coiled it up, then began looking for a place to lasso it. The only clear option near enough was the tower wreckage above him.
“Hmm…” Sonic tilted his head as he weighed the chances of something going horribly wrong. He didn’t want to crush himself to death and the mental image of Tails returning to find him flattened in such a foolish way was beyond embarrassing. Maybe his only way out was going to be asking for help.
Or… the bit of what looked to be dripping grease from a tube in the wreckage above could serve as a good middle ground between safe and foolish. Tongue poking out the corner of his mouth, Sonic swung the cable like a cumbersome lasso and focused. In one hefty swing he sent it up and right onto the grease tube.
“In one try! Heh,” said Sonic aloud to his own ego.
With a steady pull, Sonic watched the tube buckle and bend. It then broke loose, spilling a decent amount of machine grease a few yards uphill. From there the grease flowed down toward him very, very slowly.
Soon Sonic felt himself tapping his foot as he watched the ridge for signs of Tails. He knew his brother was faster than this grease, and that was scary. He looked back up at the broken tube, maybe he could bend it to spill grease closer to him? Without a second thought he yanked on the cable again. It quickly slipped loose of the grease tube, for some unimaginable reason, and snagged another cable on its way down. This sent a flash of sparks scattering down to the grease.
“Oh sh-wait, grease isn’t flammable!” Sonic let out a relieved laugh as hot sparks fell over the flowing grease. Then in an instant the grease lit aflame. “...What the burning hell?!”
The burning grease rolled toward Sonic as a slow volcanic inferno of his inevitable doom. Yeah, there was no way he was taking his chances with that, especially with the awful smell it gave off. He looked back up at the wreckage, finding a dent with a good enough jagged chunk to lasso. This time it took him three swings to get his cable latch on. In that time the black smoke from the grease started wafting over him, making his eyes water and his lungs sting.
  Stifling a cough, Sonic started trying to pull himself up. But even with a more vertical angle his foot wouldn’t come loose. His ankle gave a sharp pain, warning it may give out. Going slow and careful wasn’t working, so Sonic took a breath and gave one hard yank on the cable. There was a snap, it wasn’t his leg. Through his blurry eyes he saw a large blue blur falling toward him.
The object fell to the ground beside Sonic. It was a metal ball with a large dent in its side. Sonic wiped the haze from his eyes, there was no way this was that badnik. As he got a clearer look however, the ball opened up itself and glared with an armadillo-like face. It was a Roller, one who’d had a bad day. The look in its eyes told Sonic it was going to make this his problem.
“How are you even in-tact?!” said Sonic.
The Roller snapped back into a ball shape and charged toward Sonic. The dent in its side made its trajectory wobbly, allowing Sonic to deflect it away with a shove. A warm feeling then touched his legs. With a yelp, Sonic turned and started rapidly stomping the burning grease with his free leg. He kept his ears on a swivel as he played firefighter, following the audible path of the Roller until it swung around well enough to charge him again.
“Just give up already!!” shouted Sonic as he turned and stopped the Roller with his hands.
The Roller responded with some sort of electronic growl that Sonic had never heard before. The force Sonic had to exert to keep it from rolling him over was really straining his leg. If he didn’t figure something out soon, the fire would reach him. Or even worse…
“Sonic!!!” shouted Tails from above.
“Oh please no,” muttered Sonic.
Managing a glance up, Sonic saw Tails brandishing a large dish shaped device as he descended. What must this scene have looked like from his perspective? Sonic almost fell backward into the fire as he fretted.
An electronic whirring sound came from Tails and suddenly the Roller was a lot lighter on Sonic's end. It then shot up into the sky toward Tails accelerating dangerously fast. A yelp came from Tails and he dropped his new device right before the Roller slammed into it. The momentum carried it past Tails and into the ridge where both machines shattered into pieces. Then their pieces, along with yet another even larger landslide descended towards Sonic's position.
“Hang on!” Shouted Tails as he swooped down and reached for Sonic.
Out of habit Sonic grabbed Tails’ arms. Then he realized he was still stuck. “Tails wait! My leg is-”
Tails lifted straight up and with great ease Sonic's foot slid out of the crack in the rock. He gasped and looked down to see the burning grease pour into said crack like a lava flow. The fire was then promptly smothered by a massive wave of rock and dirt as the landslide buried everything up to the bottom of the tower wreckage.
“Oh… nice save,” said Sonic.
They softly landed atop the ridge overlooking the mess in the valley below. Sonic could hear Tails catching his breath behind him, so he took this time to think about what he should say.
“Hey, uh…”
“What the heck happened while I was gone?!” said Tails between heavy breaths, “I missed all that action in what, a couple minutes?!”
“Well, you see, uh… honestly I’m not even sure,” said Sonic. It was half true.
“What happened to your leg?” said Tails.
Sonic looked down and noticed all the obvious scuff marks and dark smoke stains right above his shoe. Looking at it made Sonic realize he was in a bit of pain. “Well I… It was a cheap shot.”
Tails started circling him now, which was always disconcerting.Not watching his step, Tails slipped for a second before catching himself. Both of them looked down to see one of the many cracks in this stone hill.
Sonic slowly looked back up to Tails’ face, who was still looking at Sonic’s leg with a hand on his mouth and a look of pity. Oh jeez, he knows.
“Well one out of every thousand ambushes are gonna catch you off guard I guess.”
“Oh, yeah,” said Sonic as he wiped his nose and let out a relieved laugh, “maybe we oughta postpone that race though, not sure I should go full speed yet.”
Tails nodded, hand still on his face as he looked down. Then Sonic heard a huff, followed by a cough.
“I… I should-” Tails was cut off by another sharp breath, “I-I’m gonna get my magnet.”
“Oh yeah, sorry it got busted immediately.”
“Don’t be-” Tails clearly stifled another sharp breath, “You should-Pfft!” Sonic recognized that snicker, “g-get the Tornado ready.”
Oh, Tails did know. Of course he did, he was smart. “Listen pal, you don’t gotta-”
“I’m nice,” said Tails as he poked Sonic's snout and stifled another sharp breath, “It-It’d be mean to laugh.”
“...I know you are.” Sonic patted Tails’ head, “thanks for that save.”
“Get out of here!”
“Okay okay,” said Sonic, surprised by a feeling of relief washing over him, “...but don’t feel bad for having a little titter at my expense.” Tails immediately keeled over onto his knees and covered his face with his hands. Sonic felt a light chuckle from his own chest, then carefully took off toward the Tornado. This was embarrassing, yes. But not that bad, not really. A smile grew on his face, as he too found amusement in the whole situation. He even let out a proper giggle.
It’s the Little Things
Sonic’s such an outspoken person. He commands attention in every room he’s in and puts people in their place—for better or worse. Yet, whenever it’s time to admit to himself his winnings, he gets all flustered.
Shy looks good on him.
Sonic and Amy share a moment alone at a piano after a long night, and Amy remembers what she loves most about her connection with him.
Started doing some new doodles for the final chapter of Making Space by the incredibly talented @samthefrank and @humanityinahandbag . I was going to wait till they were all drawn to post anything, but that might be awhile because of work, and I just couldn’t wait to share this sketch of the bros napping together. There’s definitely more on the way! 💙❤️🧡
The Cyber Corruption takes a lot from him, in the end. More and more, he forgets where he’s going; what waits for him at every destination; what’s supposed to happen if he succeeds at whatever goal he’s chasing. By the time he’s tumbling from the sky like every other shooting star, he’s lost his own name.  But in the end, there’s still one thing The End can’t take from him.  (Or: Sonic the Hedgehog, and the revolutionary act of loving your friends beyond impossible odds.)
First Sonic fic on Ao3!! Very excited!!!
If Sonic 3 gets a PG-13 rating (which we know it won't, but let me dream), I want them to use ability to curse on Sonic and Sonic only.
Specifically, I want Maddie and Tom to follow Sonic around the entire movie with a swear jar.
Even more specifically, I want Sonic to look Shadow dead in the eye while simultaneously dropping a dollar into his parents swear jar, just preparing for whatever is about to come out of his mouth.
Poking and Protection
A commission from @biconic-disaster25 ! Thanks so much for your support! <3
~~~~~
Knuckles strode down the sidewalk, his footfalls not quite stomping, but not quite not. His brow pulled down into a deep furrow, his hands curled to tight fists at his sides.
Sonic followed after, arms up and hands behind his head, a little smile on his muzzle as though it were a leisurely stroll through the park instead of a punishment handed down because of their arguing.
The hedgehog had been poking at Knuckles for days. Every time the echidna made a mistake, or did something clumsily, Sonic would be right there, with his stupid fake announcer voice, “The most dangerous warrior in the galaxy, ladies and gentleman! Isn’t he impressive?”
At first Knuckles had tried to ignore it. It was just Sonic being Sonic, trying to get a rise out of him. He wouldn’t give the hedgehog the satisfaction. So he ignored it. Tuned the hog out as well as he could. He’d been living with the Wachowskis for a few months now, long enough that he knew how Sonic got sometimes. Poking and teasing and taunting until he grew bored and then he’d move on to some other similarly annoying behavior. It’s just how the hedgehog was.
But after three days, Knuckles was having a really hard time ignoring it. It almost felt like Sonic was following him, waiting for him to do something to comment on in that insufferable way. He’d turned and told the hedgehog to knock it off, and Sonic simply gave him that smile that looked innocent but was anything but.
“I’m just kidding around, Knux,” he’d said when confronted. “S’what you do when you’re in a family.”
Knuckles wasn’t sure how Earth families behaved, but that wasn’t what he’d done in his family. Back when he was a boy, when his tribe was still alive. He couldn’t remember a time when someone taunted him like Sonic was doing.
Then again, he couldn’t remember much of his tribe at all anymore. He’d been so young when they fell. And it had been so long ago.
But, back to the point, he’d tried to be calm about it. He’d tried to simply tell Sonic to stop doing the poking and taunting. And Sonic had continued. Knuckles had asked again. And again, Sonic continued. The third time was more of a threat, which Sonic didn’t take seriously.
The last straw had been when Knuckles dropped a fork as he was setting the table for supper. Sonic had snickered, and made a comment about how “big ol’ echidna mitts aren’t made for around the house stuff” and Knuckles saw red. He’d jumped the hedgehog, growling and yelling at him to shut his stupid mouth already.
In their tussle they’d knocked the meal Maddie had made onto the floor. The Pyrex dish shattered, rendering the chicken casserole she’d prepared completely ruined.
Knuckles had felt horribly guilty. He’d let his temper get the better of him, and now supper would be delayed because of it. Tom had broken up the fight, giving both boys a talking to, and sending them to the store for more supper supplies.
“Jeez, slow down, Knux,” Sonic called as he jogged to catch up with the echidna. “If you wanted to race, you could have just said so.”
Sonic’s tone infuriated Knuckles further, and he whirled on the hedgehog.
“Am I a joke to you?” he growled, baring fang. “You do nothing but taunt me, make fun of me, and harass me at every turn. Why did you want me to join your family if all you do is treat me like I am nothing more than something to be made fun of?”
Sonic clicked his tongue, and rolled his eyes with a frustrated sigh. “Oh, lighten up, knucklehead. It’s just a few jokes. Brothers kid around. They joke with each other. They tease and poke and make fun of each other. That’s just what they do.”
“Then why do you not ‘joke around’ with the fox as you do with me? You do not make fun of him, or ‘poke’, or taunt. Why is that?”
“Because . . .” Sonic paused, thinking for a moment before shrugging. “Because he’s Tails. I dunno. It’s just different with him.”
“Is it because I tried to destroy you?” Knuckles demanded. “Because I worked with your enemy? Is that why?”
“No!” A pause. “Maybe! I mean, come on, Knux. You find some weird bald dude on a mushroom planet and just believe everything he says? Just blindly follow him? You didn’t know who he was or what he was planning. He nearly destroyed the whole town!”
“I didn’t know! It was a mistake, and I greatly regret my actions.” The topic of Robotnik was a sensitive one for Knuckles. He felt great guilt for trusting someone so unhinged so completely, and for helping the man find the Master Emerald. He’d brought great dishonor on his tribe for such a foolish act, and prayed to his father for forgiveness. “How long will you keep punishing me for that?”
“I’m not punishing you,” Sonic said, his muzzle twisting in annoyance, arms crossed. “I just . . .” He paused for a moment, before uttering a frustrated sigh. “Nevermind.” He snatched the shopping list from Knuckles’ fist. “Gimme that. I’ll get the shopping done. Be back soon.”
The hedgehog zipped off without another word, leaving Knuckles alone on the sidewalk.
The echidna heaved a deep sigh, rubbing his face with his hands. That could have gone better. He supposed he couldn’t blame Sonic for still being upset about what happened. Knuckles had caused a lot of damage when he arrived with Robotnik. Threatened both Sonic and Tails during those few days. All because of some lies that blasted doctor had told him.
He felt like a fool.
~X~X~X~
Sonic grumbled to himself as he hurried through the store, pulling the items from the list into the shopping basket. A ruined casserole meant taco night. Quick and easy. Considering chicken casserole wasn’t exactly Sonic’s favorite meal, this ‘punishment’ wasn’t half bad.
His mind went back to the argument with Knuckles. Had Sonic been a little too mean to him? Not just a few minutes ago, but with the poking he’d been doing? He didn’t think he was intentionally taunting Knux because of how the echidna had come to be here, but then again, Knuckles was right. Sonic didn’t poke Tails like he did the echidna. But that was because Tails had been teased enough in his life. He’d been all alone since he was really little.
Then again, so had Knuckles. After his tribe fell, he’d been on his own. Wandering the galaxy, looking for the Master Emerald. Fighting in arenas and facing foes many times his size. All since he was little.
Had Knuckles wanted to be the most dangerous warrior in the galaxy? Sonic had never really thought about it. Maybe Knuckles didn’t have a choice. If he wanted to survive, he had to learn to fight. That wasn’t fair to him. He was just a kid.
It was something Knuckles didn’t talk about. Anytime any of the family asked him about it, he would simply shrug and say “I did what I had to in order to survive.” He’d never elaborate. Which, in Sonic’s experience, meant what he went through was something he didn’t wish to think about.
A pang of guilt twisted Sonic’s stomach. Maybe he had been kind of a jerk.
But, then again, Knuckles was so easy to poke. The guy couldn’t take a joke and always got so riled so easily.
Still.
Sonic checked out and grabbed the bags, greeting a few townsfolk as he hurried out of the store. With any luck he could catch up with Knuckles and make him carry the groceries the rest of the way. Maybe they’d have a race and everything would be better.
Smiling, Sonic zipped off toward where he’d left the echidna.
~X~X~X~
He screeched to a halt when he found Knuckles.
The echidna was surrounded by a half dozen teenagers. He knew these kids, and they normally weren’t a bad group. Just . . . teens. They hassled him sometimes, but not too bad. But now they encircled Knuckles, laughing and reaching out to shove him as they snickered.
“Not so tough now, are ya?” one called as he gave Knuckles a rough shove in the shoulder. “Not without your buddy Robotnik.”
“I heard they never found Robotnik’s body,” another said, crossing his arms. “Maybe he’s still alive, and this thing’s working undercover. Still helping him.”
“Why did they let you stay here?” a third asked, giving Knuckles a harder shove. “You should be in jail for helping a criminal.”
Sonic’s fists clenched. What they were doing and saying was bad enough, but the way Knuckles was acting was worse. He stood with his gaze to the ground, tail drooping. There was no resistance, no defending himself. He was just letting them do this. Letting them pick on him and taunt him.
As though he deserved it.
Anger flared in Sonic’s mind and he rushed forward, pushing through the circle to stand before Knuckles.
“Hey guys, how ‘bout you leave him alone?” He tried to keep his voice light, but it was hard to do with clenched teeth.
When Sonic arrived, the teens’ demeanor changed. Their smirks and sneers changed to smiles, and their body language went from threatening to more relaxed.
“Hey, the hero of Green Hills!” one said, and Sonic felt Knuckles flinch behind him. “You his parole officer, here to take him back under house arrest?”
The other teens laughed at that, and Sonic flicked a glance over his shoulder to find Knuckles’ shoulders slumped.
Oh, that’s it.
“Ya know,” Sonic said, his trademark snark leaking into his voice. “You really shouldn’t tease the most dangerous warrior in the galaxy like that.”
The teens’ laughter died off and they looked at him in confusion.
“Most dangerous warrior in the galaxy? Him?”
“Absolutely. This guy here,” Sonic turned and curled his arm around Knuckles’ shoulders, pulling him close, “just about took me out. Didn’t even break a sweat. I woulda been done for if not for Tails, ya know, hitting him dead on with a car.”
The teens exchanged a few glances. “Really?”
Sonic nodded. “Didn’t even phase him. Dude was back up in seconds, and nearly took both our heads off without hardly trying.” The teens were quiet now, and Sonic continued. “He survived a hidden temple loaded with deadly traps, went head-to-head with me and gave me a good run for my money, then saved my life, AND jumped off a plane without a parachute.”
He flicked his eyes from one teen to the next. That shut them up.
“All that, and he still came back to help take down Robotnik. I never would have been able to beat the egghead if Knuckles hadn’t weakened him first.”
He didn’t mention the Master Emerald, because he knew Knuckles was uncomfortable with announcing its existence and whereabouts. Still, everything Sonic had said was true. Knuckles, for his naivete and gullibility, was a force to be reckoned with, and always did what he thought was right.
Sonic couldn’t fault him for that.
“Now, if you’ll excuse us,” Sonic said, leading Knuckles out of the group. “The most dangerous warrior in the galaxy and the hero of Green Hills are expected at home. It’s taco night.”
Sonic shifted the grocery bags to one hand and gripped Knuckles’ wrist in the other, zipping off toward home.
~X~X~X~
“Why did you do that?” Knuckles asked once they’d slowed down to a more leisurely pace. He’d taken one of the grocery bags from Sonic and they weaved through the trees toward home.
“Why’d you let those jerks pick on you like that?” Sonic asked with a shrug. “You could have defended yourself.”
Knuckles shook his head. “What they said was the truth. I helped Robotnik. I should have been imprisoned for my crime.”
Sonic clicked his tongue. “Don’t be stupid. We wouldn’t let anyone do that to you.”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t deserve that. You didn’t know you couldn’t trust him. You only wanted to finish your people’s quest. You weren’t doing anything just to be a jerk.”
“So I would have been imprisoned if I were being a jerk?”
Sonic shrugged. “Maybe.”
“Then why aren’t you in jail?”
The hedgehog snapped his head around. “Was that . . . a joke?”
A little smile curled Knuckles’ lip.
“The most dangerous warrior in the galaxy has a sense of humor,” Sonic said with a smile. “Who knew?”
“I did. I find things funny.”
“You never laugh at my jokes.”
“I laugh when things are funny.”
“Har, har, echidna.”
The two shared a quiet moment as their house came into view. Knuckles stumbled over an exposed root, nearly falling on his face before catching himself. He glanced to Sonic, who had a little smirk.
“Don’t say it.”
Sonic snickered.
“Don’t.”
The smirk grew, and Sonic gestured to him. “The most dangerous warrior in the galaxy, ladies and gentleman!”
“You will not have tacos tonight, hedgehog,” Knuckles growled. “Tonight you will have a knuckle sandwich!”
Sonic snorted out a laugh and ran for home, with his brother hot on his heels.

Appreciation
Back at Team Dark headquarters, aka an undisclosed apartment building somewhere in the city, Omega has been alerted to an important new event.
"Shadow!" He exclaimed, then emerged from the kitchen a moment later with a pink apron tightly wrapped around his wide metal form.
In the living room adjacent, Shadow lay back lazily on the couch and watched the television, paying no heed to his friend's call. Omega stood patiently in the doorway and stared intently into the side of Shadow's head as he awaited some form of response. Eventually, the glow of his red eyes proved too aggravating to his sight, and Shadow finally turned to him.
"What is it, Omega? And why are you in an apron?"
Rather than answer either question, he stood up straight and asked, "Do you know what today is?"
Shadow gave a gruff sigh. "No, enlighten me."
"The current date is April 17th, 2024, or as it is known by Bat Conservation International, International Bat Appreciation Day."
Shadow nodded, not really listening to what he said, "That's very nice, Omega."
A beat of silence hung between them, with the only audible sound emanating from the television.
Omega then clarified. "Rouge is a bat."
"I am aware."
Another pause.
"I will be baking a cake for her for the next two hours, at least according to the recipe I found by Jonathan Blake on BakingLife.com. She won't be back for another hour after that. I would advise you find a way to show your appreciation, Shadow. She is a good friend."
Shadow closed his eyes and sighed, then looked back at Omega and gave him a soft smile "I know, Omega. Don't worry, I have something in mind already."
"Very good."
The lumbering robot turned around and marched back into the kitchen, letting the door swing shut behind him. While he prepared the aforementioned recipe, Shadow gave a quick glance at the door that separated them. Then he reached for his phone and opened up his messages.
A little over an hour later, the kitchen door opened again as Omega came out with
"Shadow, I have come to inform you the cake is complete! By streamlining the baking process I have optimized its total time by thirty minutes. I will have to inform the creator of this disco-"
As he shared his culinary achievement, however, he was interrupted as a purple lacey bra smacked his face. When it fell to the ground, his receptors analyzed the scene before him. Clothing had been strewn about the once-tidy living space, and his two friends were entangled with one another in a way he had been unfortunately exposed to multiple times before.
"Ah! Oh my, Shadow! You really know how to appreciate your bat!" Rouge moaned, unaware of the third party among them. Shadow, too preoccupied between her legs, remained equally ignorant.
Omega watched blankly for a moment before he echoed in an almost disappointed monotone, "Really? Right in front of your appreciation cake?"
I heard it was International Bat Appreciation Day today and felt inspired to write this

Crown

Day 11: Crown
Ao3
To ask for her hand, he fought harder than any other.
Tumblr media
Shoes echoed through the halls of the kingdom's palace. He was nervous to meet the King in his court. He had fought hard to make sure their kingdom had won the war, leaving his family behind and making sure to keep their people safe. But he had an ulterior motive, that few knew about. He adjusted his cape and smoothed out his quills. Letting out a deep breath he made his way to the door, guarded by several mobians. As the door opened, he walked through the doors to see his King sitting on his throne, his Queen at his side. He kneeled before him, head down and eyes closed.
“Raise your head, Knight Shadow.” Shadow lifted his head to see his King and Queen smiling at him. Green and blue eyes met his and he stood with his hand over his chest.
“Knight Shadow, we have brought you here to honor the bravery and strength you have shown throughout the entirety of the war.” His King held his hand out to Shadow, a grin on his face. “We would like to reward you for your brilliant talent.” Shadow’s quills bristled. His desired reward was in his grasp.
“First.” His Queen stood and she called for her servant to come to her. A small blue fox came to her side, holding a letter and a medal. She then walked towards Shadow, placing the medal on his chest, and handing him the letter. He looked at it, the noble seal on its back, and held it tightly in his grasp. “This medal will forever be on your house; all will know of your feats on the battlefield. And this letter has changed a few things for your life to come. Your title now changed from Earl to Viscount and land has been bestowed to you.” Shadow did everything to will his tail to stay still. His Queen walked back to the throne and his King stood.
“Knight Shadow, we ask if there is anything you wish to ask for?” Shadow took in a deep breath.
“There is only one thing I would like to ask for, My King.”
“And that would be?”
“With my new title and position, I would like to ask for the hand of one Amelia Rose. I would ask for your blessing as she is unmarried and not betrothed to another.” He places his hand on his heart and his eyes are filled with determination, with love. His King smiles at his Queen and they both hold their hand out to him.
“You have the King” “And Queen’s” “Blessing to marry this girl. We wish the two of you all the happiness in the world.” Their voices echoed in his ears and his eyes shined brightly.
He gave them one large bow and exited the throne room, his spirits higher than ever before. Leaving the palace was a carriage to his current property and he immediately called for some paper and ink, his coat barely off and his words almost nearly missed by his passing servants. He hurried to his study, and inside a drawer in his desk sat a box with a ring with her name inscribed in it. A beautiful pink gem that shined so brightly he couldn’t help but think of her when he saw it. His Amelia Rose, the beauty he had dreamed of on the cold battlefield. He sent her letters, unable to receive any back due to frequently moving battles. But only thoughts of her kept him standing from wounds and fires.
