something that is like the baseline of amys entire character to me is that shes lonely. shes clingy and physically affectionate in a way none of her friends really are, shes always getting pushed aside and left behind. yeah, she helps out people she doesnt know because shes a nice person, but also, she sees part of herself in them. she wont leave someone else behind because she knows the feeling —and more importantly, hates the feeling. if she doesnt have somebody to stand by her and be there for her, then shes going to be that person for everybody else. something something her obsession with sonic is really just like a manifestation of that desire for closeness with someone, and she thinks that romance is the only way to get that. idk... this hedgehog can have so many abandonment issues.
#me posts#amy rose#sth#sonic the hedgehog#and this is not to say at all that romance is the only way to have 'real' love or anything#just that yknow part of her breaking free of that would also be realizing that she just wants closeness with someone and it doesnt-#-have to be romantic#aroace amy could fit this i suppose and she just doesnt know it yknow. thats not my hc but i support their beliefs if that makes sense#she wants to be loved and she wants to love and she doesnt really get a big outlet for that so she shares it with everyone she sees#also i didnt wanna jam up the post but GAMMA!! this is partially abt gamma she helps him find out how to love and how to find joy in it-#-bc its what she wants for herself. she sees him and sees how completely alone he is and she wants to help him. idk idk something something#-when she was locked in the cell she saw part of herself staring back at her#gamma parallels to amy is SLEPT ON i stg i could make a whole other post about it#idk.. whenever im writing amy or just thinking abt how shed interact with others its always from the lens that she craves closeness with-#-others. she wants people to just stay for once.#does this make any sense. idk man im rambling here#my worst nightmare is characterizing her wrong its such a fine line and sometimes the words do not come out of my brain right#btw this is NOT me dissing amy i love amy. she is like top three favorite character.#important context: im typing this with amy firefox theme rn ok. ok im an amy fan.#she points at the minimize button like shes telling me to log off#jesus christ i just scrolled back up i love to put a whole other post in the notes dont i

Summary: A series of moments in the lives of Sonic and Sally, showing the reflection of their childhood selves in their later relationship. The more things change, the more they realize what they had all along. Continuity: Sonic SatAM (with a little bit of game stuff where it fits) Tags: Fluff, Friendship/Love, Then and Now, Slice of Life Relationship Tags: Sally/Sonic
8: Fate Sonic the Hedgehog is not a fan.
And that's the last one. I had fun with these! (Also, if anyone is curious, I think #7 is still my favorite of the bunch, but this and #1 come in tied for second.)

something about how when a guy sonic character has nothing going for him in canon or is from a game people dont like people will flesh him out and write 500 page fanfictions about him detailing their au backstory for him anyway. if he does something really really bad whether it was a mistake or fully intentional people are willing to think about and understand why he did what he did. or theyll just ignore it entirely or blame it on bad writing. but when a girl sonic character does any of those same things shes treated like the spawn of satan

Amy Rose, I love you. You're just like me. They could never make me hate you 🫶🫶

Wait wait no I'm not over this I need to talk about it.
So I've been reading Archie Sonic. And besides the fact that the lore and plot of most of the comics is just a blindfolded guy throwing darts at a dartboard, random things will just like come back after 50 issues of no longer being relevant or not being talked about.
Two of these things? Shard/Original Mecha Sonic, and Sonic's experience during the Metal Madness special, during which he was the True Mecha Sonic.
So for context, let's back up to the Mecha Madness special.
So, I will be so clear right now. As Sonic was roboticized, during his stint as Mecha Sonic he is completely fine doing what Robotnik instructs. I am completely aware that he lost his free will, and I do not blame him for this. He is under Robotnik's control (or his robotic "programming" if you will) when he starts attacking Sally, the freedom fighters, Metal Knuckles, and Knothole.
But part way through that special issue, something happens that allows him to regain some of that free will. It allows him to feel a moral dilemma, and it gives him the chance to fight against Robotnik's programming.
Again, I will be clear. Up to this point, unless one of the roboticized characters has had their free will restored, the only thing allowing them to "fight their programming" or become aware in any way was as long as they were holding a working power ring (and later, the sword of acorns). This tells us just how powerful a force the programming to be a mindless Robotnik slave built into roboticization is.
And yet Sonic M. Hedgehog, the true mecha Sonic, manages to gain awareness without the usage of a power ring.
How?
Is it because he just couldn't hurt Sally, his love interest? Is it because he couldn't hurt his friends? Is it because he couldn't stand destroying his home?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOPE (don't believe me? Read Archie Sonic issue 39 and then the mecha madness special)
He starts to regain a semblance of his free will because he almost killed Tails.
It's such a small thing, and it doesn't end up amounting to much in the moment just because he and Metal Knuckles end up duking it out until Sonic falls, damaged, but it’s highly important.
Now let's fast forward to the return of the original Mecha Sonic. This event spans issues 86 and 87.
Now, the big conflict of this arc is that Mecha/Metal Sonic has kidnapped Tails and restrained him at the top of a volcano that is going to erupt very soon. Tails spends most of the arc in the damsel in distress role and acts as motivation for Sonic to fight Metal.
And really, Sonic isn’t having any of this Metal kidnapping Tails business
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He spends much of the issues fantasizing about/trying to destroy Metal while trying desperately to get to Tails, but there are two moments that stand out from this in issue 87. Namely, the moment when Sonic realizes how similar Metal is to him when he was Mecha Sonic, and during the Tails + Sonic vs Metal fight, where he tries to relate to Metal. During the former:
Tumblr media
At this point, Sonic first realizes how similar he and Metal are, but he doesn't think too hard on this. Instead, he ops to think about what makes them different (Metal's lack of humanity, or at least the lack of attempt in keeping a semblance of humanity).
During the latter:
Tumblr media
Here, although Sonic spent much of the arc trying to save Tails and dealing with his anger towards Metal, he tries to reason with Metal. Whether he really believes he can get through to him or not, the point is that he tries. Even if he can't convince Metal, at least he can distract him enough for Tails to fly to safety.
Now, here's what's also interesting about these scenes. Sonic doesn’t actually mention how he began to fight his programming, only that he had to to preserve his last bits of humanity. We will come back to this.
Now, during this scene, Sonic bids Tails to escape, but Tails will not.
Tumblr media
This scene is important. Sonic is having difficulty getting through to Metal, he bids Tails to leave, and while Metal goes on about how feelings make them weak, and then about how Tails *is* actually going to leave Sonic, Tails flies back to his side.
"No! I'm coming to be at his side so we can stop you together!"
And then...
Tumblr media
Metal saves them. He not only saves them, he stands in the way of the magma, melts down to his core, to save the Mobians he's been fighting and toying with all day.
And despite the conversation he JUST had with Sonic, not even a page or two ago, he's going off about how he understands compassion, what it means to have the ability to go past your programming.
What happened between point A and point B? How did Metal flip flop so quickly even though Sonic's words didn't do anything.
Well, here's how Sonic puts it:
Tumblr media
"But I think you turned the tide, Tails."
"Me? How?"
"Whatever words I said to the metal guy were just words. But when you wouldn't abandon me... That's when what I said became real to him...as if he gained some kind of robotic soul."
Now that's interesting.
If I remember correctly, later character bio type stuff on Mecha Sonic/Metal Sonic/Shard just mentions that he changed his mind after seeing Sonic and Tails' display.
But what Sonic says is pointed. It's not just after seeing Sonic and Tails' bond that Metal opened his mind. To him it's specifically what Tails did.
And I think there's some truth we can see to that! Metal would not listen when Sonic tried to relate to him using his time as Mecha Sonic, but when Tails expressed that he wouldn't leave Sonic, that he'd stay and fight to the end...
Suddenly Metal understood what Sonic is saying. Suddenly...he understood what it meant to feel, to have something to fight for.
While issues after Mecha Madness are vague about what exactly caused the true Mecha Sonic to try to fight his programming, the evidence speaks for itself.
It is so highly interesting to me that it was seeing Tails that allowed the Mecha Sonic to fight his programming, and then it was seeing Tails and his demonstration of fighting with Sonic til the end that inspired Metal Sonic to fight his own programming and give his life for Sonic and Tails.
It drives me crazy that if you boil it down, one thing that makes Original Metal/Shard so similar to Sonic/The True Mecha Sonic is that it was due to Tails that they fought their programming.
And given the evidence (using Uncle Chuck, Muttski, and both iterations of Mecha Sally as examples) of just how hard it is to maintain any sense of free will, the fact that Tails existence helped Mecha Sonic and his actions helped Metal/Shard means a lot.

whatever you do, don’t think about Charmy wanting Vector to play with him by landing on the middle of the croc’s back so he can’t catch him while Vector is trying to reach and get him off, while simultaneously making it into a game, spinning the two of them around and pretending to not know that’s its him and some random person trying to attack him.
Just…don’t think about that cute scenario.
.....EXCUSE ME? Bro, BRO
You are CRAZY to think that I would read this, picture it, and not react to it in some form there, Non. That would be a wasted opportunity there if i didn't.
So lucky for you I did 😘
Tumblr media
====
Charmy huffed out a sigh and laid his face against the hardwood floor, throwing down a crayon and lazily watching it roll across the floor until it hit a stack of papers that he had colored, folded, and cut an hour prior to this mental roadblock. The one issue is that he had no more paper, and that also meant that he was back to being bored until something else happened.
He didn't have many options. Going outside to play was definitely out of the question since a huge snowstorm had come inland the day prior and wasn't letting up anytime soon. Which also meant that no clients were going to be calling in for potential cases to them crack for a while.
He had some picture books he could look through and some school-related notebooks he could work on, but he already looked through most of them while he was NOT trying to do any school work in an unofficial snow day, even though Vector and Espio might make him do it later on.
He would go to use the phones to call up one of his friends, like Cream, Ray or Tails, or even that cool guy, Shadow the Hedgehog, if he even bothered to keep a cellphone that is. But they only had the one landline and he knew Espio was using it earlier to talk to some important people on the other end.
That left him just one option left, being stuck bored beyond belief until his brain melted into jello, or whatever happened when you're bored for so long.
He rolled onto his back, staring up at the ceiling until his eyesight went all fuzzy, reminding himself that he needed to blink every so often. After 5 minutes of doing that was beginning to get boring for him.
Charmy's thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice clearing their voice from the main floor below, followed by the sounds of paper shuffling around. He lifted up his head slightly and remembered that he still had two other people in the office to play with.
Crawling over to the edge of stairwell, he climbed down a few of the steps and peeked over to see Vector at his desk, writing thoroughly on a few sheets of paper while multiple folders covered the rest of the desk, a steaming mug of coffee next to him, he also had radio on behind him that sounded like it was playing music from the old times. Vector told him it was a style of music from the 50s, which probably made the crocodile super old if he remembered that.
Other than Vector, there was no one else here. Espio wasn't in clear sight, though from where Charmy was looking, he was either in the kitchen or near the front entrance, either doing his own paperwork or meditating like he usually does.
That just left Vector as the main target. He definitely knew better than to bother him while he was doing important work stuff, but his thirst for fun was on the line, and he was not going out like that easily.

Lingering Ghosts
Words: 1536 Desc.: Cloak and Gray have a talk about the past and the pain it leaves behind. TW: description of blood and injury, references to amputation
(Don't look at me. I needed a warm-up)
///
Cloak and Gray were sitting in a quiet part of the house. The other Dans and Kevin were in the living room playing Mario Kart and screaming at each other.
Well, to be more precise, the Dans were screaming at each other. Kevin was just along for the ride.
Mario Kart was always a feral competition between all the Dans (minus Cloak). No one wanted to admit that Purple Sweater was objectively the best Mario Kart player out of all of them. Especially Headphones, for some reason. However, no one could deny that Purple Sweater got first place in almost every race in nearly every Mario Kart game in the house. But it was downright impossible to beat him at Double Dash.
The only time he didn't get first place in that game was when he was playing against Cloak. He felt bad winning against someone who struggled to grasp the concept of a video game, let alone a Game Cube controller, so he got an unheard-of tenth place as he taught Cloak how to play. Cloak didn't get to finish the race since he took too long.
Gray didn't take the competition as seriously as the others. At least on the outside. Cloak noticed that Gray had a silent, seething rage as opposed to the others' loud taunting.
But today, Gray craved silent activities. And the bright colors and split screen of Mario Kart 8 gave Cloak a headache, so he joined Gray.
They weren't doing much. They raided Daniel's bookcase and made fun of his choices in literature. Of course, every book was unrecognizable to Cloak, but he'd take any chance he could get to shit-talk Daniel.
Gray was still at the bookcase, this time genuinely comparing the books to the ones in his bookcase in his own universe. Apart from the spell books, they were somewhat similar.
Cloak was sitting nearby with one of the spell books. The way magic worked in this universe still annoyed him, but it was his nature -- and his job -- to study things until he understood them.
His own universe didn't have "spell books". There were books on magic, but they were more akin to history books. True magic was impossible to study. It was more of a feeling than an exact measurement. Most things were possible if you had the power and will to do it. And Phexas's blessing, of course. The god of magic. Not only did she have to see you worthy enough to wield it, but she could also deny any act of magic she disapproved of. While it was extremely rare for her to deny someone's request, Cloak had heard stories of it happening.
But Daniel's magic was stupid. There was no simplicity or beauty in it. There was no god to call upon to ask for some assistance. It was all about rules, and waving sticks around, and crushing leaves to mix them in pots. It sounded more like a cookbook to him.
He smiled at the thought of saying that to Daniel's face. He could already imagine the indignant squawking.
The smile disappeared as he winced. A sharp pain shot down his shoulder to his metallic fingers. It still caught him off guard sometimes.
"Um, are you okay?"
Cloak initially assumed Gray must have noticed his mood shift, though as he looked up, he saw flowers sprouting around Gray. There were even some appearing in his hair and behind his ears.
It didn't happen often, but occasionally, his magic responded to his missing arm sensations. Depending on how it felt, it could be harmless or cause severe damage to someone else. One time, he accidentally shocked Brian and Daithi -- the only people near him -- and their pain didn't go away until his did. He apologized profusely, but they kept telling him it was fine. He still felt terrible about it.
"Oh. Sorry." he focused on getting rid of the flowers despite the tingling running up and down his left arm.
Gray shook out his hair. The remaining flowers fizzled from view as they fell to the ground. "That was a new one for me." he peeked at Cloak. "Except you didn't answer my question."
"I'm fine." he wiggled his fingers. It felt odd at first, like his skin was too tight, but as he continued to move, he settled into himself. "It happens sometimes."
"What does?" Gray observed him.
"My arm..." he tried to think of how to describe it... "gets weird."
Gray sat down beside him. "Like phantom pain?"
"What?" The pins and needles felt like they were embedded into the metal of his arm.
"That's what it's called, I think." Gray smiled sheepishly. "Phantom limb? I don't really know. Obviously." He held up both of his fleshy arms for emphasis.
Cloak snorted. "Right." he continued to watch his fingers move. Sometimes, he wondered if the magic flowing through his arm worsened these feelings. "Well, where I'm from, people don't usually live long enough to give it a name."
"So what do you call it?"
"I try not to bring attention to it." he hated that it made the lads treat him like glass. "I have a friend who calls it an echo arm."
"Sounds like a superpower."
Cloak smiled. Gray taught him that concept recently. "It's not as exciting as that."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Gray ran his fingers through the threads of the rug they were on. "Did you... want to talk about it?"
Cloak sort of wanted to laugh. A common trait shared between most of the Dans was the hesitance to discuss their emotions with others. It turned out that talking about it with another version of yourself wasn't any less awkward.
He didn't laugh, though. He thought about the question, and his arm seemed to hurt more. Only three people in his life knew how he lost it. It was a secret he tried to keep buried, but the clues were scattered over his face. Josie told him he couldn't pretend that it never happened.
But how could he not?
He wanted nothing more than to forget. Ironically, the one thing he was great at failed where he needed it most. Every moment was etched into his brain. The sound of his bones snapping, the blood dripping down his mangled fingers. It stayed bloodied, broken, and painful for nearly four days. He remembered slowly losing control of his fingers -- like rigor mortis setting in on a corpse.
Then there was the saw. The only option.
He had his eyes closed the entire time, but he still felt the blood spray. Sean held him down, his body practically on top of him to keep him still. The teeth of the saw...
Cloak blinked. The tips of his fingers were still tingling. "No," he answered.
Gray stared at him. Cloak didn't meet his eye. Something unspoken weighed down the air. "Can I tell you something?" Gray asked quietly.
Cloak hesitated, afraid of the possibilities. "Sure."
"Everyone in my hometown thought I was bad luck." he returned to staring at the carpet. "They thought I caused bad things to happen because they never believed me when I predicted something."
Gray paused, but Cloak didn't fill the silence. He continued, quieter, "I don't know why it happened. I remember being really young, and people believed me then. Then suddenly they just... didn't."
"What did you do?"
"I ran away."
He said it so easily, as if it was the only option.
"I fully intended to isolate myself from everyone, just so I would never have to hear anyone call me a liar ever again."
"Why didn't you?"
He smiled. "I have stubborn friends."
Cloak laughed. He knew the feeling.
"It took a really long time to trust them. I was always afraid they would turn around and start hating me. But I was lucky they didn't give up."
He knew the feeling. "How did you... get over it? Everyone thinking you were bad luck."
Gray tilted his head back. His eyes searched the ceiling. "I don't think I did, really. I still don't like being called a liar -- even if I know it's a joke." he put his hands on the floor behind him and stretched his legs out. "I'm still afraid that people will randomly stop me to ask about their future. I know it won't happen, but some days it's harder to believe than others."
Cloak was starting to think he and Gray were much more alike than they initially thought.
"I don't think it's about 'getting over it'. I think it's just about accepting that it'll be there."
Cloak peered at his arm. The one thing he couldn't hide from everyone. "How do you accept it?"
"That's the hardest part."
Cloak hated that answer, which made him think it was the one he needed to hear.
"It's not the same for everyone," Gray continued. "Sometimes it takes a really long time. It helps to have friends that understand, though."
"I'm sure it also helps to actually talk about it." he didn't mean for it to come out sounding as bitter as it did.
"That takes time, too." Gray gave him a soft smile.
"Maybe a really, really long time."
Gray continued to smile. "And that's okay."
Cloak's arm wasn't hurting anymore.

I wish more people understood that Sega / Sonic Team carefully scrutinizes and approves every single issue of the IDW comics before they get printed and release, down to characters' facial expressions.
This isn't like the wild west of the 90s where people like Penders were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Scripts and storyboards are sent to Sega for approval multiple times for every issue. And the IDW team has to make the requested changes before it can print. One example that has been specifically mentioned was when Amy hugged Sonic in the "Chao Races and Badnik Bases" arc. Evan originally drew a little blush on Sonic's cheeks. Sega said "no" because Sonic doesn't show that much vulnerable emotion, and so Evan had to revise the panel to remove the blush. The oversight is that finite. Absolutely NOTHING gets put in the IDW comics that is against Sega or Sonic Team's ideas for their characters and brands. Like it or hate it, but that's simple fact.
So when you hear, "Sega wants to bring the comics and games (and potentially the shows) under the same canon umbrella" — yeah, it makes sense! Because while Sonic Team might not be crafting the comics themselves, they ARE overseeing their creation and are approving every story beat and facial expression contained within. They know exactly what is happening in the comics, are actively working to keep them in line with the current vision for the Sonic brand, etc. If they're working to keep them in line with their current vision for the games anyway, why NOT tie them all together? Especially when the comics have helped bring a new generation of kids to the franchise (similarly to how the movies did) while also being compliant with the games (unlike the movies). It just makes sense.
I understand that people who are perhaps more used to stories about what the Archie comics were like in the 90s might have reservations. But for good or for ill, the IDW comics are a completely different beast, despite having a lot of the same crew. I'm not saying Sega are overbearing evil overlords who don't let the IDW team have any fun (personally I think it's clear the team has a lot of fun working on the comics), because hell, they let a zombie pandemic arc happen. But I am saying that nothing that happens in the comics happens without Sega's express approval, right down to whether Sonic is allowed to blush when Amy hugs him or not. You still don't have to like the comics, everyone has different tastes and that's cool. But just know that the comics are Sega-approved panel by panel, so if you have an issue, take it up with them. Ultimately, they're the ones who get final say.

Given the many hurdles in keeping your relationship afloat such as hiding it from Blaze’s subjects, Sonic’s job as a Freedom Fighter, and not staying together for too long otherwise the universe will crumble, why run the risk of having kids?
Like, how does the universe not completely implode in on itself due to their mere existence considering that they’re children of two people from opposite dimensions? Can they just exist in either dimension for as long as they want? Do they draw the power from Chaos Emeralds, the Sol Emeralds, or both?
What about the Sol Empire? How do they not know who the father is? Who do they think IS the father? How did they not get suspicious when your children turn out to be half-hedgehog and knowing about your history with Sonic? What happens if they find out that you’ve been lying to them the entire time?
Sorry for asking so many questions about your kids. It’s just that I find their existence baffling and you barely mentioned them at all in this entire thing. In my opinion, this was a widely irresponsible decision for both of you to make not only once but three times. You should be grateful that things are turning out as well as they are for all parties involved even if it means constant secrecy and separation.

I've thought way too much about what idw sonic would be like chronologically ten years later, and I fully believe that as the Restoration with Jewel and the new Diamond Cutters becomes more comfortable, both Amy and Sonic probably wouldn't stick around. Like, I think both of them have had to deal with a lot of responsibility (especially Amy), and as they become less needed they'll both want to travel and find more adventures.
It makes sense to me because they feel both developed and restless. Like, they've already grown immensely within their roles to the point where it's more restricting to be a main character at the center of it all than it is to explore the world outside of the main story.
They've grown as their own people and alongside each other, and I just think of all the original people they're the most likely to stick together and want the same things: freedom and adventure.
not necessarily as a romantic couple. I personally really identify with Sonic's aromantic vibe, especially with how he seems fine with close friendly gestures but not romantic ones. Relatable as hell.
(Also, related note: sonic already raised a kid so I think any orphans they meet will probably end up with the Restoration, where they can try to find family and build more of a stable life.)
This also means characters who have yet to have focus in main roles get a center stage. There's a sadness to it as well, with characters like Knuckles and Shadow never really changing positively past where they are. The fact that they're surrounded by people changing and doing what they want would only increase this melancholy. It's like going to a school reunion, and seeing how many people have changed and how many are exactly the same.
Idk. Maybe it's the fact I'm in my own transitional stage right now, but I just have a lot of thoughts about the dynamics of change and how time molds people.
