Hello Chas! Can I request a pairing (I don't mind who, though I would possibly prefer Star Wars)? A bit about myself: I am incredibly quiet and shy, and really like having discussions about many things and just learning in general. I am fairly active and love the outdoors. I get overwhelmed easily and will probably need someone to distract me in someway from those things. I wear glasses and have forgotten them in weird places before.
Hey Aro! So happy you asked for a ship, love! 💗🥰
I ship you with Fox!
You don’t like going out much, instead preferring to stay home and going through your data pad in search of learning something new. But at the insistence of your friends, and a relatively stressful day at work, you succumb to the invitation of going out to 79’s one night. And thank the stars you did, because that’s when you lay eyes on him.
You are much too shy to approach him, instead content to simply see him from afar. Thankfully you don’t have to make the move. At the sight of the clone commander approaching your table, your nerves get the better of you, and you look at anywhere but at him.
He introduces himself as Commander Fox. Initially you think he’s there to talk to one of your friends, but to your surprise, he’s looking at you the whole time he speaking. Your friends see the curiosity in your eyes, and excuse themselves from the table to give you two some space.
In the beginning, you admit, there is an awkward silence. You’re much too shy to start talking to him, especially with how his hazel eyes seem to look at you as if he already knows you. It’s when he starts to ask about what you rather be doing than be here at 79’s that he gets you talking.
And talk you do.
In fact, you talk all night, and soon (too soon for your liking), the night is over. But you promise to meet again the next week, and you always keep your promises. Soon, the two of you are inseparable. He picks up on your mannerisms, and you on his.
Whenever he’s at your place after a mission, you feel more whole, more complete. He’ll always be there when you need him to be. Whether it’s for help looking for your glasses (multiple times a day) or to listen to you excitedly talk about the latest topic you’ve learned or to simply hold you after an especially hard day, Fox is always there.
It’s on one of those hard days that you realize something.
You get him from your job, and to say you feel overwhelmed is putting it lightly. You don’t feel valued at your job, and though you keep putting your best to your work, it seems that the work is never-ending. Fox is already in your apartment when you arrive (you’d given him a spare key, and he’s definitely been putting it to good use).
You’re happy to see him, as you always are, but you also don’t want to talk about just how down you feel. But Fox knows you, and with one look at your face, he’s setting down the data pad he’d been holding and embraces you. You sigh, your body giving into the warmth of his own. His hands play with your hair, fingers running through it, and Maker the amount of serotonin that flows through your body due to the sensation should be illegal.
His lips place a soft kiss on your forehead and you don’t even realize a few stray tears have fallen down your face until he wipes them away. He doesn’t say anything, he doesn’t need to. But as he looks at you the same way he did that night at 79’s, you know Fox knows you better than anyone does, he always has. And honestly, you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Monday
You had to get ready, but you were still in bed. It was one of those days you wanted to stay in bed and do nothing. You weren’t feeling ok; you assumed that it was because you missed him, your dearest boyfriend. Today marked the second week since he left for work. It was supposedly to take just a couple of day, but it didn’t go as planned because he hasn’t come back yet.
You felt alone, empty. Chris wasn’t there with you, neither Dodger; Chris insisted on took him in with his sister, so you didn’t have to worry about him. You took a deep breath and decided to get up and get ready for the day.
Once on the kitchen, you were having just a tea, not coffee today, you weren’t in the best mood and the caffeine didn’t help you. You were lost in thought about all you had to do for the day when your buzzing phone brought you back to reality.
Good morning doll. Counting the days to be back with you.
I wish you a beautiful day
Love you
Chris
Suddenly a smile appeared on your face, and felt love, just pure love. Chris knew how sad and difficult is for you to be alone for so long. You decided to text a quick response and then get ready for work.
Hello beautiful boy. I can't wait to have you with me.
Have a beautiful week.
Love you more
Y/N
The day at work started pretty good for your liking, but it ended up bad and it was just Monday. Someone did something wrong on important papers and your boss had to deal it with you. Being part of a group of assistants was difficult, you have to deal with the bad mood and yelling from the bosses and people who believed had a superior position than yours. You were really stressed, you needed a break to keep going but it was the beginning of the week and you still had the rest of the week ahead. You finished working around 4:30 pm and had to get ready for your classes. You’re on your third year of college with a major in Art History, your current job it doesn’t have any connection with what you’re studying but it helps the survival.
You have a few delayed papers, a few with close deadlines but still you have to prepare two final exams. The stress was starting to kick in.
Tuesday
The same emptiness you felt yesterday today was there. You had barely slept; you stayed awake doing some papers and making flashcards to study. Last night after coming back from school, you started to cry, you were overwhelmed, and you needed Chris by your side. You had texted him but you put it aside afterwards because you didn’t want any distractions. You were starving; you didn’t have dinner yesterday, so you got up and went to have breakfast. You took the computer with you so you could update more papers. You had to checked the phone, probably some of the teachers had emailed you because you were late and the grades were coming down. You had a few texts from Chris, of course.
Hi love! I’m sorry I didn’t answer back, I was busy.
How did your day go? I really miss you
Chris
 Babe, is everything alright?
Pls answer me
Chris
I hope you rest well. I can’t wait to see you
Sweet Dreams, good night, I love you
Chris
You felt really bad because he wanted to talk to you, but you needed to update some of your essays. Your work was taking you more time than you had expected and because of that you were getting behind in the classes. You finished breakfast, got ready and went to work.
At lunch break, you decided to text Chris back and tell him what was going on.
Hi honey! How are you? Sorry I didn’t answer I was catching up with homework
I hope your day it's better than mine :(
I really miss you. Can’t wait to see you
Love you
Y/N
So far the day was stressful, but manageable. You had tons of work, and probably you had to stay extra hours to finish some papers that had to be delivered the following day. After the break you started to work on those papers when you got a phone call.
-Hello –I say not seeing who was calling
-Hi love –Chris said –How are you?
-Lost in work, you? –I say
-Missing you –he says
-I miss you too –I say –Look honey, I really appreciate you calling, but I have to finish this, and I’m already late with it –I mention with a sad tone
-It’s okay doll. I wanted to check on you actually –he says –but I’ll call you later
-I’m good, don’t worry –I say
-Ok. I love you –He says upset
-Love you too. Bye –I say and hang up
If you thought that your day was going to get better after that call, you were wrong. A really strong headache hit you and made you feel dizzy, probably it was because the late night working. You decided to take an aspirin, ignore the pain and keep working.
You had to stay almost four hours after work, your headache never left and you had missed the classes of the day. You wanted to get home and get into bed and wake up on the weekend. You decided to send Chris a quick text because he had promised you to call.
Hi love! I know you wanted to talk, but I’m leaving work right now and I have to finish an essay for tomorrow and I’ll probably ignore my phone.
I’m really really sorry
Talk to you tomorrow. I promise
Love you
Y/N
Once you got home, you took off your clothes, put some pjs and started the essays which were due date tomorrow and you haven’t started yet. It was going to be a long night with lots of coffee.
The pounding headache you had earlier got really worse, your eyes were watering making it really difficult to read and your body was really sore. It was the fifth cup of coffee when you got a text from your mom
Hello Y/N! I hope you remember our dinner tomorrow
It’s been a while since the last meeting.
I really miss you
Mom
As soon as you saw who texted you, you rolled your eyes. You’ve totally forgot the dinner with your mom, you were doing too many things but remember it wasn’t, but you couldn’t cancel it. It was the only time you were able to see her during the week.
Hi mom! I’ll be there, don’t worry
I miss you too
Y/N
When you send it the message, you realized it that was almost 6 AM and you haven’t finished your essay yet. You stop doing it and went to take a shower and then start the new day.
Wednesday
After your late night work and your shower, you still felt tired and sore. You prepared your breakfast and went to finish your essay. Luckily you were able to finish it just in time to go to work. You send a quick text to your mom and Chris and started your day.
Your day at the office went pretty well. Some stressful moments, but besides that, everything was normal. You were feeling really bad, being all night awake wasn’t your best decision but it was worthy, your essay was perfect, as your teacher said, and you were proud. You needed to go home and crash your bed; unfortunately you had dinner with your mom. You felt feverish but you didn’t pay much attention, probably was the lack of sleeping.
Hello my love! How’s your dinner with your ma going?
The producers told me that probably I’ll be back home by the weekend. I can’t wait
I love you
Chris
Your face lighted up immediately. It was the middle of the week, and Chris was coming back home. Nothing could ruin your day.
Dinner with your mom went terrible. She’d complaint about everything you have been doing since you moved on your own. Everything got worse when she started to criticize your body and your diet; and when she compared you to your sister you snapped. You had to kick her out of your house before something bad happened. Chris promised you to call, but you weren’t in the mood, not after what happened with your mom, so you turned off your phone, drank a beer and then you went to sleep. You deserved it.
 Thursday
Your alarm started to sound pretty loud, you got up and had to run to your bathroom, it wasn’t the cleverest idea to drink a beer before bed. Once you emptied your stomach, you laid on the cold floor. Today you had to stay in, so you emailed your boss calling in a sick day. You went back to bed and you fell asleep immediately. You woke up a few hours later feeling a little bit better from your stomach. You went to the kitchen; you prepared something light to eat and went back to bed. It was the perfect opportunity to finish all your essays you hadn’t hand in yet.
Some hours later, you were emptying your stomach on the bathroom again; you probably had caught a bug during the week. You should tell Chris about it, he shouldn’t get sick.
You remembered that you’d turned it off the night before, probably you had several messages and missed calls, but you didn’t care. You didn’t want to deal with anything. Indeed, you had several phone calls from your mom and a bunch of texts saying she was sorry and she never meant to tell you such things. Before calling her you texted to Chris quickly to give him an update on your day and your health as well
Hi love! That’s great news! Sorry I didn’t answer back sooner, I was busy…
I don’t think you should come directly from the airport, I think I caught a bug, cause I haven’t been feeling well for a few days.
I hope your day is going good.
I miss you
Y/N
And then you called your mom. She picked up after the first ring
-Y/N! Darling, are you ok? –she asks almost screaming
-Yeah, I forgot to turn on my phone –I say avoiding my health
-I’m sorry about last night, I shouldn’t have told you such horrible things –she says
-But still, you did it –I say –Look, I know you don’t like the way I’m living, but it’s MY life –I say
-I know sweetie, but I still feel bad about how everything ended –she told me.
“She was really excusing herself” you thought but your stomach had other plans
-I’m sorry mom –you say –I’ve got to go. We’ll talk later –I say and hung up
You run to your bathroom, lucky for you, you made it. You really needed Chris next to you. You heard your phone ringing, probably it was him calling you, but you didn’t have the energy to get up, you were really dizzy and you started to see black dots, and then everything went black. This wasn’t good.
You didn’t know how long you were passed out, but when you woke up, you felt terrible. You checked your temperature, the thermometer marked 100.4°; with all your energy you got up, and went back to bed to rest, you didn’t have enough energy to take anything or even cook something.
 Friday
You don’t know when exactly you woke up, you emailed to your job calling in sick again. You didn’t realize what time it was or how long you were asleep. The only thought in your mind was that you needed to clean the house, Chris was coming tomorrow and everything was a mess, even though you warned him about being sick you knew he was going to come either way. You had to take your temp again; you were shivering, probably because it went up. Certainly it did, it was 102.2°; you knew it was bad, so you dragged yourself from bed and decided to run a bath, which was going to help.
After your bath, you went to the kitchen and prepared just a tea, and grabbed two crackers, you didn’t want to push your stomach, you were still weak; and you went back to bed.
You had a few emails from school, from work and some texts from your mom and Chris. When you were about to texted Chris back he called you.
-Hello my love –he says with his calming voice
-Hi –you answer
-How are you feeling?
-Really bad –you say pouting
-I’m sorry doll. Do you want me to call someone to take care of you?
-Don’t worry hun, I’m better now. With some rest I’ll recover –you assure him
-I’m calling you because I’m about to head to the airport so, I’ll probably don’t answer my phone until tomorrow –you heard him smiling
-It’s ok love; I can’t wait to see you again –you say smiling as well
-Me too love. Me too. I’ve got to go –he says upset
-Safe travel, I love you –you say
-Love you too. Bye –he says and hung up
You were crying already, you didn’t know why, probably was the fever. You finished your tea; you put some cozy clothes and went to the kitchen to start cleaning everything.
You finished cleaning pretty late so you took another tea and some crackers for dinner. You weren’t in the mood for food and neither your stomach. Once you finished your tea, you went to your room to clean it, when a wave of nausea hit you and you had to run to the bathroom again. You lay on the cold floor; it was a beautiful sensation against your heated skin. With all your strength you grabbed the thermometer and took your temp again, because you were pretty hot. You were running a temp of 103.1°. You needed help, you tried to get up from the floor so you could go to grab your phone, but you fainted before getting up.
Saturday
Chris arrived at dawn; he found the house clean although you told him you were sick. He noticed there was no dinner leftover, “have you been eating?” he thought to himself, he was worried
-I’m home baby –he calls but there’s no response
-Y/N? –he calls you a little louder
He thought that you might be sleeping, but his heart broke when he find you. He lifted you from the floor and put you in bed. He went to the kitchen, grabbing a bowl and pouring some cold water, grabbed a washcloth, a glass of juice and some ibuprofen and came back to the room.
When you woke up, you realized that you were on the bed, “did you make it to the bed?” you thought when you saw that Chris entering your room.
-Hey! You are awake –he says and you could barely smile
-When did you arrive? –you question
-Not long ago, I was worried –he admits -I found you on the floor –he sits next to you on the bed pulling the tray on the nightstand
-Oh –you say and you look your hands
-What is it love? -he asks caressing your cheek
-I think I fainted in the bathroom –you admit
Chris didn’t say anything; he went to the bathroom and picked up the thermometer. He came from the bathroom with a worried face
-Open –he commands
You did what he had told you and waited. He never stopped caressing your cheek. You were falling asleep when he woke you up
-Don’t fall asleep sweetie, I know you’re tired, but please, hang on –he sounded worried - Did you eat something? –he asked you but you just shake your head and the thermometer beeped
-104° .How high was the last time you checked it? -he asks you
-103.1° –you says
-We have to break this before it gets worse. How many times did you faint? –he was really worried
-Two times, I think. I don’t really know actually –you say disappointed
-When was the last time that you eat something solid? –he asks concerned
-On Wednesday, with my mom –I say –Probably that’s why I fainted the first time –I explained
-Don’t worry, doll. I’ll take care of you –he says caressing your face.

jaehyun x reader
librarian! au
genre: fluff
words: 1.7k
warnings: realistic portrayals of college life lol
Tumblr media
ive said before that im being self indulgent with posts
but this is really it
im really out here writing this
lets get into this mess
so youre studying right
and you yourself do not have a laptop of your own
bc welcome to being a broke college kid im calling myself out
so you decide that youre gonna go to the library on campus bc sis,, cash in on the tuition money ok
so you go and youre like wow hahahaha i dont have a library card better sign up for one
so you go to the desk and theres no one there
just your luck really
you decide to wander around a little to see if theres anyone who can help you
and low and behold you stumble across someone
this young man knelt down by a shelf with a book rack next to him just humming softly and organizing books
and you catch his attention by clearing your throat slightly
he looks up and his eyes are big over the rims of his wire framed glasses that are clinging to the tip of his round button nose
and his hair is a little mussed from being bent down
but holy hell
youve read enough novels to know that this must be exactly what the characters are talking about when they say things like ‘love at first sight’
“sorry” he says as he standcs and brushes himself off “can i help you with anything?”
starstruck really
you manage to stutter out something about needing to register for a library card and he smiles so kindly it makes u want to melt
“sure!’ he says, motioning for you to follow him back up to the desk
is this what a trance feels like???
he asks you a few basic questions, like your name, your age, and what building your dorm is in so he can put it all on your new nifty library card
and then he turns around this lil webcam on top of his computer and asks you to stand in front of it and smile
and you do, awkwardly
and as hes looking down at the computer counting “3, 2, 1” he has this smile on his face like hes trying to hide it
and if that didnt make ur heart jump you dont know what ever would holy
so he prints off your card as youre still trying to recover from being in the presence of an angel
and he hands it to you and smiles
“library hours are 8 am to 12 am every day, but on the weekends i’m the one that closes. which means if you ever need some extra time to finish that essay you pushed off,,, i wont tell anyone”
aND HE W I NK S
and not lot a hot wink
but a cute?? wink??? if thats possible
like you have a secret with him now and its safe
you wonder absently as you stare down at the black and white picture of yourself on the back of your new card if he tells everyone about him closing on the weekends
and if he doesnt does that make you special???/
you smile and thank him again, maybe a little more confidently than before and head for the door
you realise as youre halfway out that you came here to study on the computers but you really need some time to sit down and process the fact that you just say an actual angel
you can do your math homework on your phone for one more night if it means you can turn down your body heat from screaming blushing mess to slightly embarrassed rosy cheeks
the next time you get a chance to run by the library on campus, it just so happens to be sunday
you catch yourself wondering if dream boy meant friday and saturday or saturday and sunday when he said weekends
thats not important right now
what is important is that you have actual business to do in the library today
and that business is to pick up hamlet for your english class
you check in and someone else is at the front desk
you try not to let yourself feel disappointed
i mean you met him once for christs sake
the guy at the front is equally as attractive as dream boy from the previous week, but a little more relaxed to talk to since he isnt giving you any flirty subtones
the kid is all business really
he tells you that his name is doyoung if you need anything else
you ask how he got the job there, out of curiousity
because really, both of the librarians youve encountered seem pretty young for the standard librarian stereotype
doyoung explains that its a work-study job, so nearly all the people that work there are students at the university and work in between classes or on their off days to make some extra cash or pay off some tuition
and you can get behind that!!
so doyoung is cool and you decide you can go to him to ask questions instead
because while dream boy is a dream boy with pretty cheekbones and nice lips and a smooth voice and a good sense of style and a great height without insoles and looks great with glasses and has the most captivating eyes
hes a lil distracting lol
anyway you find yourself in the shakespearean section
and you grab a hamlet off the shelf and head back up to the front to have doyoung check the book out to you
and as hes handing you the book back you get a classroom notification saying that, despite common belief, the book rental wasnt due by tomorrow, but the whole book reading is due by tomorrow
you wonder how the fuck professors get away with shit like this and then you remember that you didnt bother to read the syllabus so you cant really get too mad at anyone but yourself
so you find a table that looks like it has the comfiest chairs and cozy up for a long evening of reading and annotating
(depending on who you are you either love or hate hamlet, either way it is exhausting to annotate anything from that man so bear with me ok)
five hours later and ⅔ of the annotations later it is 11:56pm
and you havent noticed
you hadnt noticed much of anything happening in the real world after you popped in a headphone and started reading about guards seeing a ghost
that is until someone plops down in the seat in front of you and asks
“so what are you studying”
and you look up, a little delayed because youre finishing a notation
only to find that its dream boy
and your brain blanks for a sec bc wow every time you see him its kinda like?? ouch???? my heart bro
so you just kind of shake your head and mutter some “im not really sure anymore”
and theres some truth to that!! first there were ghosts and now theres dead girlfriends dads and dead girlfriends and talking about a skull in a graveyard
that play is really a wild ride brother
and dream boy sits there and laughs, wholesomely
you could die happy
“yeah i get that” he says, rubbing the back of his neck
theres a pause that carries on a bit too long
“wanna hear a dumb joke?” he asks suddenly
you smile then, partially out of exhaustion and partially because wow?? cutie
“sure” you say
“okay. what do you call a nervous javelin thrower?”
you pause for a sec bc wtf
“dunno. what do you call them?”
he flashes this cute fucking grin that you know is supposed to be slick but just comes off as wholesome and says
“shakespeare”
and you shouldve seen that coming wow
and its so dumb that you actually??? giggle????? and that turns into a laugh??
youre probably just exhausted from annotations but maybe that was actually funny
and his smile softens like hes made progress on something
“y/n, right? i dont think i ever actually introduced myself. i’m jaehyun”
he smiles and reaches across the tabe and you take his hand
its warm and strong and you try not to think about it too hard
“well, y/n, library loses here in another two minutes or so.”
he sees the look on your face fall
“but never fear!” he leans forward and lowers his voice
you hold your breath
“i told ya you could stay, didnt i?”
his smile is closed lipped and cute and genuine
before you can say anything hes up and ushering the last few people out of the library, telling them good night and good luck with their classes tomorrow
youre kind of caught in a brain dead daze after finally being pulled from your studying to watching this cute librarian named jaehyun bustle around and lock doors and turn off lights
and when he finally gets back to you he clicks on the lamp on the table youre working at and sets a cup of coffee in front of you
he mustve made it as you were falling asleep with your eyes open
you thank him copiously before asking
“i thought you let everyone stay after hours when you closed”
he looks up over the rim of his mug with a surprised look in his eyes
he shakes his head as swallows the clearly too hot coffee
“not at all. most of the time i kick them out and study by myself.”
he blushes like its a confession and it makes you feel,,,, something
but you dont want to press
so you just reach out and offer your other headphone to him because if you dont know what to say then you can both enjoy some good study music
so he pulls out his homework for the night and the two of you sit there and study
you sip off your coffee occasionally and both of you nod your heads to the music playing in your ears
he hums along to the ones he knows and a thought skips across your mind
you could get used to this
(theres a 100000% chance there will be a part two to this)

tsukkiyama w/15! (things you said with too many miles between us) please :-)
Sorry for the super long delay! But here you are! I don’t know where I was going with this ahaha whoops.
Tsukkiyama - things you said with too many miles between us (based on this prompt list)
The familiar sound of a Skype call coming in jolted Tadashi out of his study dazed trance. He scrambled through the papers spread over his bed and reached for his open laptop, nearly dropping it before he settled it into his lap.
A wave of excitement passed through him as he saw Kei’s icon flashing on the screen - a picture Tadashi had taken of the two of them before Kei had left: him smiling and Kei looking at the camera like he would rather be anywhere else.
He hastily clicked the accept button on the call, already smiling as wide as he could when his webcam stuttered to life.
“Tadashi? Can you see me?”
Kei’s voice came in through the speakers on his computer, somewhat scratchy and metallic, but still warm. Had he really forgotten how pleasant Kei’s voice sounded? It was the sweetest sound Tadashi had heard all day.
He fidgeted impatiently as the screen cycled through black and then pixilated colors, waiting for the moment Kei’s face would transform the screen.
“No…ah, there. Yes! Hi!” Tadashi instinctually edged closer to the screen, like it was Kei himself he was trying to reach.
Thousands of miles away Kei smiled into his webcam, too. Tadashi felt his heart melt at the sight, like it always did. It felt like years since he had seen it in person and had been able to lean over and kiss Kei’s smiling lips, though in reality it had only been two months. Two month that crawled by like a lifetime.
“Hi,” Kei said once the connection had stabilized.
They were both silent for a moment, searching each others faces for anything new, any little thing they had missed since the last time they had seen each other. Finding nothing, words surged from their lips simultaneously, like they shared a mental link despite the great distance between them.
“I love -”
“ - love you.”
Tadashi giggled, covering his mouth with his hand. Even Kei chuckled, and when his eyes stopped watering Tadashi could see Kei still smiling at the little coincidence.
“Let me say it first next time,” Kei said, and Tadashi knew he was feigning the grumpy tone his voice had taken on. It didn’t matter if they spoke over each other, or if one of them said it first or last; they both meant it, and even without hearing it Tadashi knew it was true.
Shifting on the bed to get more comfortable now that his frantic rush to see Kei had ended, Tadashi finally took a closer look at the screen. The room around Kei was dark, and he himself was partially in shadow, the glow back from his computer screen making him appear somewhat mysterious.
“It’s late there isn’t it?” Tadashi asked, checking the clock at the bottom of his screen and noting the time.
“Yeah, it’s past midnight,” Kei answered. He rubbed at his eyes under his glasses, then readjusted them. “I just got in. A few of the people in my study group dragged me out to this disgusting bar to do karaoke with them.”
Tadashi beamed at the camera, happy to hear that Kei was finally making friends while he was studying abroad. It did not even occur to him to be jealous or distrustful. They had moved past that long ago.
“Did you sing?”
Kei rolled his eyes and clicked his tongue, like the answer should have been obvious before Tadashi even asked it.
“Tsk. Seriously?” He moved in his chair, half of his face getting cut off as he found a better way to sit. When he was again fully in frame his eyes wandered around the screen, likely taking in the mess of papers around Tadashi. “What are you doing?”
“Just some homework,” Tadashi answered. “I’ve got class in an hour.”
Kei frowned, eyes flicking towards the bottom of his own screen. He looked back up and seemed to notice the sunlight streaming through Tadashi’s window for the first time.
“Oh, right. I got my times mixed up.”
“It’s okay,” Tadashi said, shaking his head. This was far from the first time they had this exact conversation. It was hard to keep track of the difference in their time zones along with everything else in their busy lives. On top of classes and Tadashi’s part time job there wasn’t much time left to consider the hour when they had a free moment to call each other. Most of their chats were whispered in the middle of the night for one of them, or else hurried through in the few spare minutes before one of their lectures started.
A minute dragged by in silence, then two. Tadashi  bit at his lip, trying to think of something to say that would be interesting or new. On the other side of the connection Kei fiddled with his glasses and yawned.
“Listen-”
“Hey, I-”
They both spoke at the same time again, their words jumbling together. Neither of them laughed this time, but instead just shook their heads and apologized.
“You go,” Kei said finally.
Tadashi took a breath, then spoke so quietly he worried the microphone might not pick it up.
“I really miss you.”
Kei nodded, a slight smile on his lips.
“That’s what I was going to say, too.”
Instead of the warm feeling Kei’s words usually gave him, Tadashi felt his chest tighten. He was so tired of saying this same thing over and over. I miss you. I miss you so much. The words were beginning to lose meaning, becoming only a mantra that they repeated when there was nothing else to say. How many more times could he hear Kei said them before he stopped really hearing them? Before he himself forgot to say them?
“I should sleep, Tadashi.” Kei’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts, and he looked back to the screen to see Kei rubbing at his eyes again.
“Oh,” Tadashi said quietly. “Well, I’ll call you later?”
Kei nodded and Tadashi noticed the small smile from a minute ago was gone.
“Yeah. I’ll try to be awake later for you.”
It had only been two months, but I’ll stay awake for you had already turned into I’ll try to be awake for you. It was an offhand thing and likely didn’t mean anything, but still the difference was there, stabbing at his heart.
“I love you…” Tadashi trailed off, ending the conversation the way they always did, the words now less bright than when they had said them earlier.
“I love you, too,” Kei replied instantly, as if he had been waiting for his cue. “Goodnight, Tadashi.”
The call ended before Tadashi could click the red button on the screen. It shouldn’t have bothered him; it was late, Kei was tired. They were both busy. But as he gathered his things for class  he couldn’t help but feel lonelier than he did before Kei had called.
