The chef who made it his mission to end food waste in the city now wants to end hunger too.

Jagger Gordon is launching Soup Bar, a model he describes as Toronto’s first subsidized eatery where patrons are allowed to pay what they can to feed those less fortunate.

“If you can afford to eat, you can pay for someone else to eat,” said Gordon.

Through his project Feed It Forward, Gordon is already collecting unused, unsold food bound for the landfill and creating nutritious, balanced meals. In the new subsidy system, a chip is placed into a jar for every $2.50 meal purchased. Anyone who can’t afford a meal can take a token out of the jar and use it as payment.

Gordon has no concerns about anyone abusing the system. “I don’t judge anyone,” he said. “If you are humble enough to come and utilize one of the chips for a meal, you’ve earned it.”

Soup Bar opens May 21 at the Scadding Court Community Centre, near Bathurst St. and Dundas St. W. It’ll primarily serve soup and sandwiches but will add other items such as veggie burgers and hot dogs.

“Let’s just take care of the less fortunate and make sure no food is thrown away,” said Gordon.

Our favorite Leo's for the last decade plus, was a former Big Boy. After 2 n half years Covid the Soup and Salad Bar finally reopened. This mega deal when you purchase Salad n Soup Bar you get a Burger or Coney Dog with Fries. Yes prior to Covid this deal was 10 bucks so a three dollar increase is on par with everything else. A couple dozen fresh choices and three Soups, Chicken Noodle see photo some of the very best ever eaten. Also Chicken Lemon Rice n Chicken Tortilla Soup both outstanding Delicious. Been a favorite of ours over 35 year's, got to meet the owner today. He's a well known owner that gives back to the community. A favorite of thousands of families for the weekend Breakfast Bar fills the place with overflow into the banquet room. Mega groups of Church folks dressed in them fancy duds and pretty hat's every Sunday. Breakfast bar on until 2pm giving you plenty of time to enjoy Dearborns very best deal on a Buffet. We arrive later Sunday for Brunch my all time favorite Appetizer Platter definitely a must try plenty for sharing at a great price. She did the Cobb Salad n Onion Rings for the Win. I added a order of Potato Pancakes with both Sour Cream n Applesauce for dipping. A superstar waitress took really great care of us. I visit once per month for Fish Friday, me favorite the Cod with Mac n Cheese along with all you can eat Soup Bar. Had 2 bowls of fantastic Clam Chowder Delicious.
