The Indian cricket team is going through various permutations and combinations. After the ODI Cricket World Cup, where the Indian cricket team finished runners-up, the focus now is on the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup. If the T20I side that has been selected for the South Africa Tour is anything to go by, then the BCCI selectors are not averse to giving the young guns a go-ahead of the shortest format marquee event. The likes of Tilak Varma, Arshdeep Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad will be closely watched in the next six months. India have five T20Is and the IPL to decide their final combination for the T20 World Cup.Rinku Singh is a crucial cog in the Indian cricket team's T20 scheme of things. Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar had some interesting things to say on Rinku Singh."Talent - it's not given to everybody. You can love the game. You can play all day, but sometimes you know you might not quite have the talent, but he has the belief that he could do it, and that's what he's done over the last 2-3 years. Again here in the IPL, he was in and out of a lot of teams when he finally got the opportunity and the way he grabbed it (was amazing)," Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying to Star Sports by India Today."And now he's part of an India team. And now there's so much, so many high expectations of them. They are now expecting him to be another Yuvraj Singh. Rinku Singh - Yuvraj Singh. So if you can do even a fraction of what Yuvraj did for Indian cricket, then he will have done wonderfully well," Gavaskar said.Giving his assessment about the South African wickets after India's first practice session, Rinku, who played a vital role in India clinching the five-match T20I series series against Australia recently said, "When I battered here today, there was extra bounce here compared to Indian wickets."The pace is a bit more, so will practice against pace bowling." India will play the first of their three T20Is against the Proteas here on Sunday and Rinku is expected to bat at the crucial No. 5 or No. 6 position. He said that head coach Rahul Dravid had also asked him to just play his natural game and bat at No.5 or No.6."The first practice session, I enjoyed it a lot because of the fine weather. Getting the opportunity to work with Rahul Dravid sir, so that was a good feeling. He told me to continue playing the way I do and continue believing in myself," Rinku told BCCI.tv."(He told me) to keep playing at No. 5 or 6. It is tough to play in that position, but keep pushing yourself and believe in yourself."The hard-hitter from Uttar Pradesh added that batting in the two crucial positions since 2013 had given him the confidence to play a similar role for India."I have been playing for UP since 2013 at No. 5 or 6. So, I have got used to that position. I keep backing myself to play in that position because it is very tough to play in that position if 4-5 wickets are down," Rinku said.Topics mentioned in this article

The first T20I between India and South Africa took a beating from the weather on Sunday after rain washed out the entire contest, without a ball being bowled, in Durban. As the two teams head to Gqeberha for the second match of the series, a similar threat looms. As India and South Africa look to get some valuable practice for next year's T20 World Cup, the second T20I might fail to offer what both teams are looking for, with an overall 78% chance of rain at the venue today.According to AccuWeather, there is about an 84% chance of rain during the day in Gqeberha, with the cloud cover being 85%. However, the chances of rain reduce during the night to about 6%, with the cloud cover being 73%.The weather forecast does suggest that things will improve as the day progresses but that doesn't take away the rain threat away from the second T20I.After the first T20I between India and South Africa was washed out, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar did express his displeasure over how the organisers tried to protect the ground during rain.Gavaskar said the South African board should follow the Eden method of covering the whole perimeter of the ground during the rain to minimise the damage."What the boards need to do now is to cover the entire ground. Let's have no excuse. Everybody (cricket boards) is getting a lot of money. Let's make no mistake."All the cricket boards have got plenty of money. If they say they don't, they are lying," Gavaskar told Star Sports."They might not have as much money as the BCCI. Fair enough. But every board has got money to buy these covers to cover the entire ground," Gavaskar said.Kolkata's Eden Gardens is currently the only stadium in the country to have the facility to cover the whole ground in the event of rain, an initiative taken by Sourav Ganguly when he was at the helm of the Cricket Association of Bengal. With PTI inputsTopics mentioned in this article

Rohit Sharma is currently enjoying a brief break from cricket after a hectic ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team was the most travelled side at the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 as all their round-robin stage matches were in different cities. The side started the tournament on a fabulous note, winning 10 matches on the trot before falling to Australia in the final. With the loss, India's wait for its first ICC trophy since 2013 was extended by one more year. The Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was in impactful form at the Cricket World Cup as his aggressive batting gave India good starts. However, when India lost the final, Rohit Sharma was almost brought to tears.Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that the upcoming India vs South Africa away Test series is an opportunity to make up for the World Cup final loss. India have never won a Test series in South Africa. Rohit Sharma is not playing in the T20I and ODI series."Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were really at the peak of their powers in the last 6-8 months. Like Jacques Kallis said Rohit Sharma is going to be key for India in the Test series. Rohit Sharma will have a big role to play to set up the No. 3,4,5. Whatever happens, this is Rohit Sharma's opportunity to make up for the World Cup final loss," Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying to Star Sports by Times Now.There were reports that Rohit Sharma was asked to lead the T20I side too, that is now being led by Suryakumar Yadav. However, the regular India captain asked for a break from the white-ball leg of the Tour. However, certain reports are saying he might be considered for the T20 Cricket World Cup.Ahead of the first T20I between India and South Africa, Sunil Gavaskar was asked about India's likely opening combination and he made an interesting comment."For this series, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there. He has also done well. If the team wants left-hand, right-hand combination then Shubman Gill and Yashashvi Jaiswal," Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports."It's a very good problem to have. Also there is Rohit Sharma, who is waiting, whether he is going to be available for T20 World Cup that remains to be seen."Topics mentioned in this article
