As someone who has a mental model of spelling that's very phonetic, I'm normally fine with homophones. Rain/Reign? Made/Maid? Deer/Dear? Fine! I have long since memorized the two spelling, and I can logically reason about which one to use.

But fuck "Steven" vs "Stephen". The words are spelled the same and mean the same thing, the only way to make sure you get the right one is to look it up. Like if I'm talking about writer Neal Stephenson, I know what his name is. I can name most of his books off the top of my head. I could have an IRL conversation about him just fine. But in my mind his name is stored as the sounds "Neal Stephenson", which are exactly identical to the sounds "Kneel, Steven Son".

So I have to look up if his name is Neal Stephenson or Neal Stevenson EVERY SINGLE TIME.
