Trying to imagine which magic path would be scarier to see a angry mc with. I feel like a mc with gravity manipulation who is fucking pissed would be scary as hell

Oh, definitely. Mc with gravity has a move I like to call black hole in their arsenal. It’s not pretty.

I already have plans for future scenes where mc can go too far with their magic in their own anger. Fire and gravity are obviously going to get…messy. And depending on the character you’re with, it can have some other consequences. (sorry L)

Illusion and healing are more subtle though, so I’ll have to think on how an mc losing it would look like with those. I could see an mc with illusion magic fucking with someone’s head pretty hardcore with some nightmarish illusions. 🤔 And I feel like it’d be interesting to see an mc use healing magic in ways it is…not intended for. To the horror even of themselves.

I have had this one interaction bouncing around in my head though for after one of such scenarios:

“Oh my gods,” you cry, clapping your hands to your mouth in horror. “…Do you think he’ll be alright?” You aren’t quite sure what compels you to ask. The man is clearly dead—a charred, smoking corpse lying blackened on the ground, and if by some cruel twist of Fate he is still alive you are certain he wishes he wasn’t. L’s head snaps up as they turn to look at you, blinking as if they cannot figure out if you are being serious or not. “Babe, you CREMATED that man,” they say, gesturing at the crumbling charcoal-colored corpse. “I don’t think he’ll be walking that one off.”

So Tenderized Ankylosaurus used, among other tactics, the familiar, straightforward, effective tool of uniform appearance to keep his proto-scourgers in line. Same haircut, based on the intro, same clothes, kept them isolated and dependent on him for everything, including the “truth.” Lack of individuality leads to lack of identity leads to lack of agency. BA&E were, I imagine, at constant attention, boots shined, hair perfect, in short, they were the very model of a loyal brain-washed murder mage.

So Caleb gets out on his own, and at first it’s probably the ptsd, and then maybe it’s for safety, and then it slowly just becomes part of his clothes-- long hair, shaggy beard, dirt everywhere. Because it’s the opposite of who and what he had been.

So when he goes to that bath house? Big step. Asking Yasha for help shaving? Big step. His shiny new Xhorhasian clothes?? Big SSte,p.

I think it’s not just an expression of his slow, reluctant climb out of his emotional pit, but specifically a step towards reclaiming parts of himself that had been stripped away in his training and given to Tapdance Pokemon and the Empire. His control over his appearance, his comfort in his own body, the ability to choose who he spoke to and touched and trusted, and when... these had not been his choices to make for a long time, and making them on his own again-- for the first time as an adult!-- must have been terrifying.

It probably helps that everything is so different that it had been at the Academy. There are plenty of things that pop up and remind him, and his past is getting closer now, but there was no one like Nott there eating the cucumbers while he got ready in the mornings, there was no one like Yasha offering to help him shave with a greatsword to conform to Tipplefuck’s rules about facial hair. There was no one like the Mighty Nein, this bunch of outcasts and assholes trying to make a difference in the world.

His forgiveness doesn’t come until he forgives himself, but having friends like this just might be the thing that carries him until he can.

The way this forced a burst of laughter out of me asdhja when you would talk about how head empty Aurynn could be I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this. I like him a lot 😂

OK wow, I had no expectations, but the characters showed so far feel *so* alive, and your writing is so engrossing. Add to all that the really interesting premise, and I think despite the current length this might be one of my favorite WIPs right now :D
