Ever since reading the silmarillion, it's become a habit of mine to, whenever I look up at the night sky and see the north star, smile to myself and think 'That's Earendil up there'.
And to think that scientists just named an actual star Earendel only a little while ago just makes it even cooler.

DID YOU KNOW that the star Sam glimpses, breaking out of the darkness, is no ordinary star? In a scene from the extended edition of LOTR, Sam tells Frodo, "There's light and beauty up there that no shadow can touch." The star he sees is no ordinary star; it's the Star of Eärendil, the Evenstar, and the one Arwen was named after. Today, we know it as Venus, though, in Middle-Earth, that star is a Half-Elf (Arwen's grandfather) on a flying ship with one of the three Silmarils, which contain the light of the Two Trees, holy light that predates the sun and moon. The Star of Eärendil was the source of the light contained in Galadriel's Phial which she gifted to Frodo.

Aragorn and Arwen taking a walk through Minas Tirith (she's venting about how maglor disappeared again right before el&el were going to drag him to valinor)
(Aragorn has a very good fashion sense, if he was a Noldorin ambassador living in Numenor during the Late Elros Era. Arwen is also very stylish for early Doriathrim royalty. The rest of Gondor got used to it eventually.)

Earendil meeting The Oarni
Tumblr media
Mind you this was done some time ago and I think I have improved at drawing. I just now got around to coloring it and when I asked people wanted to see it, nonetheless I still like it and will probably make a redraw once in the future.

So Luthien’s genes are STRONG right? Like basically everyone down to Arwen in her line is described as looking just like her.
When he arrives in Valinor I mostly see Elrond depicted as making the first move in reaching out to Elwing, which is smart because Elwing doesn’t know how she’ll be received after all those years, so giving him control of the situation is respectful.
But also she is a mother who hasn’t seen her child since he was six, (six thousand years ago), and she must be desperate to see him, the smartest approach might not be relevant to her emotional state.
So Elrond might be visited immediately upon arrival by a woman who looks quite a bit like Luthien.
And he’s never met Luthien. So really what he sees is someone who looks
JUST LIKE ARWEN.
Imagine the shock. The tears. Both of them crying for the children they lost to mortality. To the relationships they lost to war and terrible circumstances. The chaos, the drama. Bonding as grieving parents before bonding as mother and son.
I just think about this a lot.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
-- Dylan Thomas
Another painting for my nursery rhyme AU! A dying Dawn bids farewell to Night; respectively, Elros and Eärendil (right and left). I personally see it as Dawn no longer being an anthropomorphic personification, so the event itself will just happen naturally without Elros’ influence.
But you could also just see it as Night passing into Dawn, and they only get to see each other for a brief moment before Dawn passes into Day. At least Elros is still around that way! XDD

Did you guys know that there was a star discovered in 2022 named Earendel?
It's the furthest star from us that is named and it's so far that due to the speed of light, we are currently observing it as it was within just a billion years from the Big Bang!
We can see it due to gravitational lensing, which is the phenomenon caused by massive objects as they warp the fabric of spacetime around them (think like you're putting something heavy onto a thin stretched rubber sheet). This magnifies the object through bending of light and allows us to see it!
I think it's wild that we can see something so far, and it is so heartwarming that these new discoveries are named after stories so beloved by so many people. It just makes me so happy!

Oropher: Where the hell did we find this fuckin' kid, man?
Elrond: My mom threw herself off a cliff because she thought that my 'adoptive' fathers were after the rock she loved more than us and then you kinda just picked me up
Elrond: I remember that very vividly.
Gil-Galad: *Mildly horrified laughter*

The Fall of a Star
Eärendil & Elrond (Tolkien Universe)
First entry I'm submitting for Scribbles and Drabbles! @fall-for-tolkien Picture Eärendil way up in the sky, where, for some reason, maybe he was protecting the door of night and Melkor fought back, making him stumble or faint and fall down from Vingilot. The brightest star of Middle Earth falls from the sky, and who finds him? Non other than a long lost son...
By the suggestion of my good friend @justcypress this could also be Eärendil and Maglor if you delete the text at the end, and I dig that very much so be free to look at it as you will hehe.

Parallels
Or
Seeing Patterns in Things that Aren’t There
Part 29
Amidst The Innumerable Stars
1. “Look. Toa Lhikan’s Spirit Star. Each Toa has one. As long as it burns in the night sky, Toa Lhikan remains alive.” - Vakama. Bionicle: Legends of Metru Nui. (2004)
2. “Now fair and marvellous was that vessel made, and it was filled with a wavering flame, pure and bright; and Eärendil the Mariner sat at the helm, glistening with dust of elven-gems, and the Silmaril was bound upon his brow. Far he journeyed in that ship, even into the starless voids; but most often was he seen at morning or at evening, glimmering in sunrise or sunset, as he came back to Valinor from voyages beyond the confines of the world.
. . .
Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope.”
- The Silmarillion (1977). - Quenta Silmarillion. Of the Voyage of Earendil and the War of Wrath.
3. “What are you made of?” - Lauren Arnoldson.
“Good People.” - Manticore (Constellation).
- The Monument Mythos: Season Three. (2023)
Kind of speaks for itself.
But this post covers numerous examples of people living on as or becoming stars in one way or another.
In the Bionicle universe, Toa were represented by Spirit Stars in the sky of the GSR. Perhaps more akin to beacons in hindsight.
Lhikan’s spirit star remains while he lives. Until he sacrifices himself to save Vakama. And the Toa Metru receive their own stars shortly afterwards.
Earendil and his Silmaril become a star in the sky after he and his wife Elwing work with the Valar and their host to save the world from Morgoth in the War of Wrath.
The Angel Crown, Freedom (and Nina & Thomas Crawford by extension), and Everett Arnoldson merge to form the Perfect Union, sacrificing themselves to destroy the Martian Serpent and save the world.
In doing so they transcend and become stars, forming the Manticore constellation.
Make of this what you will.
