How the Bad Batch can end well

So here are my 5 thoughts on season 3 and what’s to come after. I recommend @eriexplosion if you like reading interesting thoughts, analysis and ramblings, a lot of their recent posts inspired this one.

First of all, the trailer was a work of art. It gave us some really random scenes, but also some very direct information that we can speculate on like crazy, if we want to. Also, the title-episode list comes in handy, I will refer to it.

1.) Episode 1-3 one go

I’ll come back to why the show needs to end before May the 4th later, and that’s another reason for the multiple episode days.

When a streaming service like Disney drops more than one episode, they often do so because they think viewers might be lost, because the single (first) episode does not have the full “boom-bang-drama” potential.

I think we’ll see the liberation of Crosshair, maybe even Omega, in the first three episodes. The trailer makes no secret of the fact that Cross will rejoin the team. So this story will not be the main focus of the whole season and the first episode might built up solely for the climax of the escape/liberation in episode 3. At least something heavy will happen at the end of “Shadows of Tantiss”

2.) Omega as the main character

Omega’s character is a very typical tool in storytelling. Throw a character who knows nothing into an established system, so she learns everything with/for the viewer. Sure, the boys are main characters, too, but Omega is the point of view of the kids(! - I’ll come back to that later)-show we’re watching. She can’t be gone for that long, because I don’t think season 3 will be a “Omega’s adventures on Mt. Tantiss”. I think episode 6 and 7 (“Infiltration” and “Extraction”) the latest will bring her back.

3.) So what’s the story?

Actually, and some might say that’s a big take, a lot of the first episodes will be about Tech. I don’t think I need to elaborate to anyone why it makes no sense for him to be dead and never had.

When we first saw this Clone X, there were some interesting “Undercover-Tech” ideas, but after analyzing the trailer in more depth and especially what appears to be an attack on Pabu led by this Clone, well, I think that’s Tech. And not undercover, no, the full on brainwashed, highly dangerous Imp!Tech. Episode 10 is called “Identity Crisis”, which could very well be Tech’s. But they’ll get him back, don’t worry, also because the second part will be about the BB finally deciding what to do with their lives. Which leads directly to 5.), but first:

4.) (Almost) no one dies

Two reasons. First: We already had that devastating Tech-death scene. He AND Asajj will be brought back from the dead this season. Any further death this season wouldn’t convince anyone anymore, not even the kids.

Second: The kids. It’s still a children’s show. Yes, Star Wars kills of characters in them too, but @eriexplosion made a very good point in this post: That’s not what this show is about. TBB has been about the struggle of Clones finding their place, finding family, finding a meaning. All of that would be for naught, and that’s why I think everyone survives.

Also: The last episode is called: “The Cavalry has Arrived”.

5.) About the future

I think the Bad Batch was intended to be released earlier. As well as the trailer. But with the strikes and Filoni being promoted, their was a lot going on. With the triplet opening and the double episodes, we’ll finish on May 1st. And that would be just to perfect to announce the follow-up-project on May 4th. I see another Clone series on the horizon. The Clones work, the people love them, it’s all there, the characters, the stories, the animation. It’s a safe bet for Lucasfilm. And sure, it would work with Rex, Cody and more as main characters, but the Batch was intended to be and is a stark contrast to the “Regs”, especially if they get Cross and Tech back.

Sure, Omega could be the leading figure again, but… nah. I am writing this because I’m absolutely convinced that we won’t have seen the last of the complete BadBatch after season 3.

Star Wars is about Hope. So I hope.

Is there a self-shipping/yumeshipping TTRPG?

Hello friend, so what I understand you are asking for that allow you to pair your character romantically with someone, a kind of [your name] sort of affair. I have yet to find a game that is specifically about this, but there are some work-arounds!

From what I understand about the community much of the hobby is very personal, so I stuck with Solo RPGs for this one. Not all of these games are romantic in nature, but they do all revolve around your character’s relationship with one other person.

I Must Find Bigfoot and Bang Him, by Rev Casey.

Motif-powered journaling game about your quest to find Bigfoot and woo him.

Track Bigfoot, facing periodic obstacles. Face Bigfoot. Try to earn his trust. Woo him with overtures and gifts.

How will your story end? Will you face failure and heartbreak? Or will you successfully win over your dream cryptid?

With an open ended narrative and simple Motif answer engine, I Must Find Bigfoot And Bang Him is a replayable experience with a new story each time. 

This is a game where wooing the one you love feels tangentially related to hunting, primarily because Bigfoot is hard to find. Whenever you have a question about the world around you and the things that might stand in your way, you roll 2d6. One result will tell you either yes or no, while the other result will tell you whether there is an “and” or a “but”. Wooing Bigfoot seems to primarily consist of offering him gifts, and rolling to see whether your encounter ends in Rejection or Romance.

This might be a good game for you if you are interested in shipping yourself with monstrous characters or characters that are kind of loners. I think it would probably be able to tweak the setting to match the kind of person you’re trying to find and woo; perhaps your character is trying to organize a meet-cute with a member of nobility, or hunt down a superhero in a big city.

I Love You But We Must Fight, by Mr. Zech.

I Love You But We Must Fight is a solo role-playing game where you play a single Hero tasked with defeating the Great Villain threatening the world. You’ve fought hard, sacrificed much, and now you are preparing for the final showdown. There’s only one hiccup: you love the Villain, and you wish to defeat them without destroying them. This game aims to tell stories like Star Wars and Naruto.

ILYBWMF has rules for playing with a group if that is something that you’d rather do, but the basic story is about a hero fighting a villain that they love. There are a list of questions for both the Hero and Villain that help define who they are and what their relationship is. If you have a specific villain in mind, you can probably just choose the options that make the mos sense for you.

This is also a great chance to take characters you love and place them in a different universe; perhaps you want to see what it would be like if you were facing off against Zuko in Star Wars, or Team Rocket in Legend of Zelda. The course of gameplay revolves around drawing playing cards from a deck to answer prompts about how you plan to face them, your history with them, and the reason they turned to evil.

Elegy, by Miracle M.

Become a vampire.

Elegy is a solo role-playing game about surviving the big city nights as a vampire. Feed to keep your fury at bay, play your role in maintaining the secrecy of the vampire society, create deep bonds with other characters and fulfill promises to make your un-life meaningful to you.

Inspired by Vampire the Masquerade and Ironsworn, this is probably the heftiest game on the list, with the fullest potential for a long-term kind of game. You are a vampire; a powerful monster living on the edges of humanity, trying to keep your existence a secret and fighting anything deadly that stands in your way.

This is a great chance for a power fantasy, but it’s also designed to reflect on the loneliness of your situation. You can create connections in this game, but your relationships with mortals will often have a layer of insincerity, due to the fact that you cannot tell them who you really are. However, that doesn’t stop you completely from creating bonds with specific characters, although you’ll have to work very hard to make that connection stick. You can put yourself in the centre of a cast from another piece of media, drawing up some characters as mortals, some as enemies, some as fellow vampires, and perhaps even as potential lovers. You become the main character; everyone else is a part of your story.

Last Love is a solo journaling TTRPG where you stalk someone because you just love them that much! Their friends keep disappearing, so they're a little upset, but you're sure you can help.

If you want to embrace a situation where your character is not the hero, you might want to try Last Love. Your focus is more on what the stalker is like, and what they will do in order to get closer to their love. To play, you will need two coins, a tarot deck, and a journal. You can use the tarot cards to generate events and obstacles, while the coins are flipped when you have to determine whether or not the stalker is successful.

This is a very freeform game, giving you loose pieces of inspiration but leaving the flow of the story (and the number of times you flip coins) completely up to you. If you have a character in mind that your character would personally be stalking, you can fill in a lot of information as to their love’s personality, hobbies, and likes. The game that this is a hack of (Princess with a Cursed Sword) is meant to be a tragedy, so the chances of success are likely pretty low.

Letters to Sandra, by Gem Room Games.

Letters to Sandra is a single player letter-writing game about communication, trust, and betrayal.

Sandra Blank has gone off to college. You are one of 6 characters who is close with Sandra. She is corresponding with all 6 people throughout her first semester of college. Read excerpts of Sandra's letters to you, roll on news tables to reveal what you are choosing to share with her (and what you are choosing not to say), and decide for yourself whether or not to respect the privacy of letters not meant for your eyes.

This game is one that you might have to change or re-write quite a bit in order to replace Sandra Blank with a character of your choice, especially since you’ll have to edit pieces of information that come with the book. However, if you’re using a piece of established media, there are probably plenty of in-universe events that the character your writing to might have a reasonable chance of only learning about through hearsay. Your letter-writing experience would probably be motivated through a desire to have the person you’re writing to either see you in a positive light, or to provide a source of comfort if they are going through a troubling time.

If the idea of diving into complex emotions with a character you know well is something you’re interested in, perhaps Letters to Sandra is worth a look.

Alone With Yuri, by Joyce Dailyparadise.

You find yourself trapped in a desolate city with Yuri, a person whom you are not familiar with. With no one else around, the two of you must stick together in order to survive. As you spend more time with Yuri, you gradually learn more about this enigmatic individual.

Alone with Yuri is a hacked version of "Alone Among The Stars" by Takuma Okada. In this solo journaling game, you will delve into the nature of your companion, Yuri, rather than exploring a ruined city. Who is Yuri? Why does Yuri stay with you? Is Yuri your friend or enemy?

This is a game that allows you to role-play encounters with Yuri - or the character of your choice - in a situation where you are kind of strangers to each-other. You use a d6 to determine what Yuri shows interest in, and a deck of cards to generate encounters as the two of you travel through an abandoned city together.

This is a writing exercise for folks who love a good AU: the character you choose to play this with is not in their home setting: they’re in an abandoned city, and you are their companion. This might also allow you to discover new pieces of their personality that come about because of this new setting or experience.

You finish the game when you feel like you’ve come to a better understanding of who Yuri is. There is definitely a lot of potential to encounter things that dramatically change the tone of the game, but I think the prompts are broad enough to allow a lot of your own interpretation, and you can always ignore encounters that you don’t want to include.

Find Her, by Ty Barbary.

You don’t know where they took her, but you know you must find her. No matter who, or what, tries to stop you. You can’t lose her. Not again.

This is a one-page solo journaling game that chronicles your desperate pursuit of she who was taken. The setting, the circumstances, the challenges, and what she means to you* are yours to choose. You’ll need two coins and a Tarot deck to play, as well as a notebook or document to journal in.

If you are a fan of the movie Taken, you might be interested in this game. Another Princess With A Cursed Sword hack, this game puts a bit more focus on the person you are trying to save, and also re-frames your relationship as something more intimate. This is a great game for folks who like high-stakes, who want to wrestle with the possibility of failure, and who like stories about bonds formed in hardship.

Sign-ups are open for MXTX Remix 2024 (@mxtxremix) right now and they close on February 9th. It's a gift exchange for people who already have MDZS, SVSSS, and TGCF fanworks, either art or fic. You can find details such as the eligibility rules, the FAQ, and the sign-up form itself on the AO3 collection profile.

I participated in the MXTX Remix event back in 2021 and it was a lot of fun! I ended up turning someone else's Canon Divergence Liushen fic ("tangled in the hanging tree" by technorat) into a Star Wars / Space Opera AU version of itself, in which Shen Yuan was a symbiote attached to Shen Jiu and they bickered a lot.

I also received "demons don't write what they know" from atarah, which is a Demon Liu Mingyan / Human Sha Hualing fic, inspired by my own Moshang Human/Demon Role Reversal AU.

It's on a shorter time scale than a Big Bang event, so you don't have to make a commitment half-a-year or more in advance: assignments go out on February 13th and assignments are due March 29th. The minimum requirements are also much more manageable: a complete 1,000-word fic or a clean piece of lineart. I think it's potentially a fun entry point into fan events if you've already start creating art or fic for one of these fandoms and are personally interested into dipping your toes into gift exchanges.

There is the pressure of transforming someone else's work into a gift for them, but it can also be fun to play with another fan's stuff, using someone else's story as a structure rather than starting from scratch. Though definitely not for everyone, it can also be interesting to open up your own work to someone else's transformation, and see what about your art or writing speaks to someone else. Examples of previous MXTX Remix works (2021, 2022, 2023) can be found in their parent collection: MXTX Remix.

I've been a bit less active lately cuz I've been busy with life and trying to write my longfic for the Obikin Big Bang event and I've been feeling like i've been having a tough time finding writing inspo

NSFW questions are also a topic I'll gladly get into if prompted; years ago, this account was supposed to be my NSFW alt, after all.

Speaking of which, I will acknowledge requests to elaborate on specific parts of my history on the internet over the years and how that's affected me as a person For-Better-and-For-Worse-- including matters of politics, drama, content creators I've engaged with over the years, oversharing about my personal life (within limits), etc. --provided everyone in said discussion agrees to behave themselves. I will attempt to hear out criticisms of my own behavior over the years that's made in good faith, and I'll at least flippantly respond to criticisms I sense were being made in bad faith... but I will NOT dignify attempts to weaponize me or my words against the people whom associate with me either online or offline.

Time for my 2023 stats round up.

First, let's look at the number of hours/minutes per month, shall we?

All of that account for 59 hours & 11 minutes of podfic. Now, comparing to last year, when I had just shy of 31 hours, that looks pretty good. Remember, last year I started in August so I almost doubled it.

We do notice a dip in March & April, which tend to be busy months in the education world. The spike in May is due to Voiceteam. June-August are a bit odd - you'd think a teacher on break would have more time to create. But I had some life stuff hit and it really destroyed my brain.

So, here's my first 2024 Resolution:

Now, moving on to the breakdowns and fun stuff, shall we?

Here are my top 5 fandoms, authors, ratings, and genres! I also have them in bar chart form and pie chart form, which I'll put below the cut. You'll see a slight difference in the author category -- I didn't include myself or Flowerparrish and my podcast in that as those weren't authors.

Of course, what is podficcing without making covers you love? Here are my favorite covers I made for my own podfics! I have a migraine so please excuse the fact that the images don't line up, vision is blurry:

Now, let's move on to my stats image from above. I used the same format as last year but since I made over 100 more podfic than last year, each microphone now equals five podfics.

As you can see, I participated in a lot of events! I believe I made the most audio for Voiceteam 2022 (as evidenced by my hours/month graph). This was my first year doing Voiceteam and I had a blast. I also got to do Podtogether & Summer Swap for the first time. It was my 2nd year doing ITPE. And then so much more.

My top kudosed collaborative project was "A Fair Compromise" with @wanderingjedihistorian for 212th Appreciation week. My top kudosed solo project was "A Game of Guess Who With Big Blue" by TheWitchBoy. The longest podfic I made was also with @wanderingjedihistorian and was my podfic of our Codywan Big Bang project! My shortest was a Locked Tomb podfic at 57 seconds called Realization.

My first podfic of 2023 was Hot Cocoa by Melime, a "The Batman" podfic. In the middle was Dissipate by SunsetsOverLA for Waxer*Boil month. And the last posted thing was for @fandomtrumpshate, for my top bidder - an Obi-Wan/Jango soulmates AU.

Now, on to 2024! My resolutions are:

To continue working on current WIPs I'm bringing into 2024 - some of which I've already tied up only 5 days into the year

To podfic even when my brain is being a gremlin, because podfic makes me happy and I should be able to focus on that!

To be brave enough to post the first "Soft Wars" podfic and finally tackle the series (kind of the same as resolution #1)

Not to sign up for Big Bangs -- I love them dearly but they actually caused a lot of my burnout this year and I didn't love that. As much as I love collabs, I think I'll stick to Podtogether, multivoices with friends, and gift exchanges this year!

Close the gaps -- aka, as much as I love Clone Wars, I want to focus on all things I love, instead of overbearingly focusing in on one.

Going into 2024, I am going to start tracking what music I use in my podfics, because I was curious about it / @flowerparrish inspired me. I also found a way to track overall Star Wars and then Star Wars broken down into sub fandoms - that should neaten up my "top 5" category a bit.

Fern's introduction to the Gleaming Grove

The Gleaming Grove is my own personal pantheon, created with a mix of historical, pop culture, and constructed or unrecorded deities. These are the deities in the Grove

the Ashkeeper – deity of the dead, graveyards, and memories. Gathers and keeps the memories we have of those who have passed. Keeps the ‘souls’ safe until they are ready to continue to wherever they choose their afterlife to be.

The Hearthlight – deity of home, hearth, and community. Protects the home and hearth, provides and guards warmth and love in the home. Connections and community. Sharing what you have and taking what you need.

The Iridescent One – deity of beauty, self love and -acceptance, freedom. She teaches us there is beauty in all of us, and helps us learn to love and accept ourselves as we are. Breaker of Chains, she guides us to break free of the chains society and our own perfectionism throw around us. She grants us second chances should we need them.

The Horned Hunter – deity of the forest, of animals and the hunt. He is the leader of the Wild Hunt and the King of the Fae. He is the god of the liminal, the in between. The cycles of nature – death, decay, and life again.

The Wayfarer – deity of roads and pathways, of journeys both physical and spiritual. She guides us with her lit lantern when we are lost. Labyrinths are dedicated to her, especially as a way to travel inward. She protects us when we travel and nudges us in the right direction of where we need to be. An antlered deity carrying a lantern and surrounded by green.

the Veiled Silence – deity of silence, of winter and of secrets. She used to be mortal, but has been lifted to Godhood by the Horned Hunter. She is the silence of snowfall. She urges us into contemplation and introspection, and what secrets mean and how to keep them.

the Wildmother – deity of nature, the sea, harvest. She guides travellers over sea, guiding them with her stars, or with profitable winds. She is the tempest and the storm, but also the cooling breeze on a hot day. She is the deity of agriculture, especially orchards. Her travel over the sea also includes being a psycho-pomp, guiding those who have passed to their afterlife.

Rootwoman – deity of the forest, magic, and war. They protect the sacred places and fight against any who wishes to take it away. Protects the oppressed and gives them the tools and power to fight against their oppressors, in both weapons and magic.

the Wordweaver – deity of words, stories, magic. Muse of writing. They spark the inspirational spark and guide the words on paper. They are the keepers of knowledge, both mundane and magical.

The Lotweaver – deity of fate, luck, and the tapestry of life. They weave the threads of life, guide and watch over them. Fate is not set in stone, choices and such will always have an influence on the tapestry.

the Weftweaver – deity of creativity, artistry, and artisans. Especially textile-, fiber-, bead-, and jewellery craft. Spark of inspiration.

Trickster – deity of mischief, change, laughter. God of the outcasts, challenges societal norms and brings necessary change.

Void - The emptiness from which anything can be created (chaos in Latin) The depth of space. The Divine Chaosyne. Void is the emptiness that was here before the big bang. The void from which creation springs forth. They are the darkness between the stars that birth the galaxies and starfields. Chaos is needed to keep things from getting stagnant, and is the catalyst for change.

Lady of Flowers – deity of spring, of flowers, love, joy, mirth, and art. Beauty, music, poetry and inspiration. Wife to Shining One and Iridescent One. She invites us to dance to the tune of the seasons, to stop and smell the roses, and see the small wonders around us.

Shining One – deity light, hope, and justice. Golden shining deity of the Sun. Wife to Lady of Flowers and Iridescent One.

Moonmother – deity of the Moon, magic, the night. Bringer of change and moving through cycles. Mother/sister to Starsister. Void created the stars, Arda (the Earth) and the moon. We gave them life in the form of divinity. Moon came first, and she inspired humans to give her a sister/daughter.

Starsister – deity of the stars and the night sky, of navigation and of hope. A light in the dark, a guide to lead us home. She dances across the sky, leaving a trail of stars behind.

Amber Forge – deity of smithing, artisans, clockwork, innovation, technical improvements, urban sprawls.

Sanctuary - deity of sacred spaces. Protector of boundaries. Both the sacred spaces we creating when practicing witchcraft, as the sacred spaces that are our home and our personal boundaries.

the Healer - deity of healing, herbalism. She is the Golden Healer, the one who heals both Gods and men. With her potions, brews, poultices, and herbal teas she brings rest to the weary and healing of body, heart, and mind. A teacher, she can also guide in the study of the healing arts. Clootie trees and healing springs or wells fall under her domain.

Crescent Huntress - Adopted daughter to the Hooded Hunter and Moonmother. Lady of the wild places, goddess of the hunt and animals. The deep wild forests are her domain.

My nerdiness, my reignited love for Star Wars, and my need to bring two of my most beloved things together. I just couldn’t stop wondering how Isak and Even would fit into this universe and what roles they would possibly occupy. And how they could still be them with everything else around them being so vastly different. How to bring SKAM issues and Star Wars lore together. I hope some fellow nerds appreciate it. :-)

Grace: What inspires you about this story?

It’s two of my favorite things: Star Wars and skam! Love how the characters are transported into the Star Wars universe so perfectly it’s been such a joy to read!
