Maskin in each other’s presence - Josette Maskin (MUNA) x fem!reader (soft!gf)
sypnosis: chronic migraine!gf "ruins" dinner, but jo makes it all better:)
g's notes: look...she's late but she's here, (she's also unedited and not titled grrrr) I'll be posting vday fics until the 16th :-)
thank u cutie anon for the title <3
warnings: RPF, migraine-y symptoms, nausea but no s!ck, fluffy fluff, jo being a sweetheart, crying, smutty comments, jo's soft!gf is lowkey grumpy!gf, no physical descriptors?
Most of your life you hated Valentine's day. Once mandatory valentine's day cards were stopped in school and it started to get romantic is when your opinion on it changed. The pressure, even as a teenager, to have a valentine, combined with the hyper-consumerism of it all made it almost unbearable. almost. until you met jo.
Granted, every day felt like Valentine's Day with Jo. If there's one thing Josette is good at, it's spoiling you. She somehow cracked the walls around your heart and buttered you up with bouquets of flowers, chipping away at your disdain for the holiday with every specialty pint of ice cream and "all you can carry" trip to the bookstore.
This Valentine's had been nothing short of perfect. Jo had been busy recording Gayotic and working on the album, but Muna was finally taking a break after the Grammy, and her plans for you aligned. You had agreed on no gifts, but there's one thing Josette is going to do: get you practical gifts that you can't get mad at her for.
She awoke you with breakfast in bed, a wonderful assortment of pastries, and your favorite tea before curling into your side, her lips moving up and down your neck and jaw, biting into the junction of your shoulder softly. With kisses on your shoulder, you get dressed for a short hike, stopping by Katie's to let Bleu run around and play with her friends. You had lunch by the beach, strolling down the coast in a rental car, top-down, as Jo's hand rests on your thigh as she weaves through her hometown streets. You nap together on the hammock in the backyard; Jo reads to you from your current read, one she picked out for you (again, practical gifts), as you rest your head on their chest, fingers gently threading through your hair and rubbing your scalp.
The day had been perfect, basking in each other's presence and welcoming the sunshine after LA had been weirdly cold and rainy. You're sitting on the floor doing your makeup in front of the standing mirror (your unbuilt vanity in boxes because Jo doesn't have the guts to ask Naomi to help her build it) while Josette stands behind you, tucking their dress shirt into a pair of slacks. It's slight, but the pain behind your left eye makes you freeze, mascara wand in front of your eye.
"What's wrong?" Jo murmurs.
"Huh?"
"You look like you saw a ghost..." Jo giggles undertones of worry in their tone.
"Oh, just- was thinking- need to make sure I shut the curling iron off," you say quickly, coming up with an excuse. Your refusal to let the inclination of a headache or migraine ruin your night.
"Can I unplug it now?" Jo asks sweetly, heading towards the bathroom. Jo heads in and unplugs as soon as you nod and continue doing your makeup.
"Thanks," you mumble, focusing on not getting any mascara on your pink eyelids. The pain subsides, and you continue getting ready.
It's not until you're in the car, the headlights make you wince, the lights bright and looking like starbursts, that you realize you're indeed getting a migraine. Jo's hand is again fixed on your thigh, tapping gently along with the music, when a slight pain shoots up the base of your neck to your head. As Jo parks and holds out her hand for you, you wobble slightly, Jo's eyes flashing with concern as you giggle it off, blaming it on your heels.
All throughout dinner, Jo keeps a close eye on you, noticing your blinks becoming longer, the way you push your food around on your fork, sipping cold water gently. Josette goes to the bathroom and, on her way back to the table, sees you with your fingers at your temples, rubbing gently as you crane your neck. Jo comes back, rubbing the back of your neck, "Why didn't you tell me you were getting a migraine?" she murmurs softly, eyes flooded with worry and disappointment. You quickly straighten up, trying to brush it off.
"I'm fine, Josie, I swear," you say, face paling at the sharp pain behind your eyes.
"You can't fool me, doll," Jo groans, pulling out their wallet as they sit back down.
"No, wait, we haven't even ordered dessert," you slur out, cursing yourself for not taking something to prevent the bad symptoms earlier.
"Baby girl, you're slurring; we can get dessert later; I need to get you home," Jo says, voice firm and definitive.
You pout, tears welling in your eyes as Jo pays for your meal, feeling guilty as she gently holds your back and walks you to the car. Instantly Jo is in caretaker mode, the food is placed in the trunk sp the smells don't bother you, she has you close your eyes, opening the windows for fresh air, taking a piece of peppermint gum and handing it to you gently.
"Just until we get home," Josette mumbles, buckling in your seatbelt and wiping your tears away with her thumb. You can't help but cry, yes, from the pain but also for ruining a perfect day, knowing there won't be any fun, intimate activities tonight.
Jo starts to drive quickly but safely, trying to keep the movements of the car limited, knowing the pain could turn to nausea quick.
"Don't cry, baby, I know it hurts; you didn't bring your meds, did you?" Jo asks, rubbing your knee.
You shake your head. "No," chewing the gum gently as you try to take deep breaths, the pain becoming more intense every minute in the car.
"I don't feel good, Josie." You cry, the mind-numbing pain now paired with nausea. At the next red light, Jo reaches into the glove compartment, getting alcohol pads, ripping them open to have you sniff to curb the nausea. "You're okay, sweet girl, just breathe," she murmurs again, trying to get home as fast as possible.
The second you're back home, the migraine routine Jo can do with her eyes closed begins. They immediately help you into pajamas, propping you up with a bin at your bedside. They grab your face roller, eye mask, and migraine gap, collecting your water bottle and meds before heating up a heat pack for your feet.
"Come on, that's my girl," Jo mumbles proudly, voice filtered with a teasing tone, watching you sip water after taking your meds, the room as dark as possible, Bleu lying at the end of your bed, head resting on your feet. "Good girl...you nauseous?" Jo whispers, smiling when you shake your head no. "Okay, stay still for a little," they say softly, moving to the bathroom to set up after the medication kicks in.
After 45 minutes and a quick nap, the pain is duller, and your migraine cap is thawed. Bleu's head is resting on your lower stomach, your hand moving to scratch her ears. Jo returns to the room when she hears her tail thumping against the bed. "You awake?" Jo whispers, walking over to your side of the bed and rubbing a hand down your arm.
"Mhm," you mumble, removing the cap. The room is dark except for a few unscented candles scattered around.
"Bath time?" Jo smiles, rubbing your cheek softly, holding your chin as she leans in and kisses your cheek. They help you get out of bed, gently stripping you of your pajamas and helping you get into the bath, the hot water and Epsom salts helping soothe your muscles. The bathroom is dark, besides unscented candlelight. Jo is sitting beside the tub, rubbing your back gently as you sit in the warm soapy water.
"I'm sorry," you say tearfully.
"For what?" Jo asks curiously, moving to wash your hair.
"Ruining dinner," you sniffle, wiping your eyes.
Jo chuckles softly, massaging your scalp gently. "You have no reason to be sorry, baby..." they start, moving to rinse your hair. "Do I wish we were in the tub doing... other things... yes, of course... but it's not your fault you got a migraine. In fact, it's a good reminder that you need your shot tomorrow," Jo says softly, squeezing the excess water out of your hair.
You groan, thankful that Jo has been willing to give you your migraine injection in the outer thigh for most of your relationship thus far, but it's never enjoyable. But even the things that were never enjoyable, like Valentine's Day, are much better with Jo. As she sits on the floor next to the tub in sweatpants and a sports bra, you can't help but be grateful for all they do for you. Jo makes everything full of love and light; for every migraine, birthday, illness, stressor, holiday, party, and everything in between.
"What kinda things?" you mumble, cheeks heating up as she scrubs your back.
"How about we have a do-over tomorrow? Let me wake you up with some of the things I wanna do, eh?" they say with a smirk, kissing your damp cheek with a cheeky smile on her face.

Beautiful 1882 Victorian in Manistee, Michigan has 5bd 4ba & asks $619K. It's a beautiful house, the reno is very nice, but I can't help thinking that they went a little too far w/the modernization. Firstly, they painted the brick exterior and I would expect it to eventually peel & chip b/c the bricks can't "breathe."
Tumblr media
Beautifully etched starburst and leaded glass. Love the tile on the foyer floor, too.
Tumblr media
Stripped down central hall. It seems likely that they were pocket doors at one time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They want it to appeal to modern buyers, so they paint it gray. I get it, but is it necessary? At least they didn't paint the wood molding. If I was looking for a modern gray house, I wouldn't be looking at a Victorian.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Updated library has a painted feature wall w/fireplace and they've added mirrors to the shelving.
Tumblr media
Nice inlaid flooring. Some of the wood was painted black and they put in a small portable bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Newly renovated kitchen and a "pantry" around the corner. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful reno, but not for a Victorian.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They put the dining room set in the kitchen by cutting the wall open and making a counter.
Tumblr media
The powder room is pretty.
Tumblr media
Up to the bedrooms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would say that this is the main bd.
Tumblr media
Again, I love this remodel, but not for a Victorian.
Tumblr media
Oh, my, this bd has a transom over the door, and 70s sliding mirrored doors on the closet.
Tumblr media
Bath #2 has been made into a shower room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finished attic with a new shower.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two more bedrooms- the smaller one would make a cute office or craft room.
Tumblr media
The basement isn't finished, but it's been brightened up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The house has a nice big driveway, side yard, deck, and fenced-in backyard.

Shipname: Burnt to the Ground
Part 2 of: Una and Ricardo's Wonderful Sex Adventures
Disclaimer: everything, and I mean everything, belongs to Malin Rydén. It's not my fault his characters are dumbasses and lead to this kind of work. Context: We were talking about Hollow Ground with friends. It occurred to me that Ortega and Una would definitely find a way to be freaky about it. I was encouraged down the path of evil. I can only hope now that Hollow Ground will glimpse this in Una's mind and die from psychic damage, mwah. What to expect: Una and Ortega work on the mysteries of Lord Ember and Hollow Ground's gang wars. All bets are off. All pants are too. Suggestive, though not particularly explicit: rated M.
2021 (UNA)
It starts on Sunday morning, for conspiracy breakfast. It starts when Ricardo pins that picture on the kitchen wall, among the other pictures, among the red thread and the articles, and on the picture there they both are, sharing a look of intensely polished hatred above a champagne glass, Lord Ember and Hollow Ground, seen together at a cocktail party a few months ago, all dapperly decked in—where is that, Carson City? You feel like you know that high-ceilinged room, from a past life, from your past life.
But all in all, it starts because you’re an idiot, and because Ricardo looks like Ricardo does wearing just his sweatpants and not much else. So you say:
“You think they fuck?”
You gotta give it to him: he doesn’t even choke on the coffee he stole from you. No, no. The swallow a casual bob of his lovely throat, then a step back, and serious consideration, eyes on the wall-board, head tilted to the side. You wonder why he ever hated those glasses: they really have a knack for making your stomach flip a little too low.
Never tell him that, though.
“You think they fuck?” he asks, crossing his arms, which jut at the triceps, which you notice, which he knows.
“I think…”
You glance at Hollow Ground’s face again, on the wall: her mirror-face, so similar to yours, though harder, wider; her fancier haircut, her darker hair, her straightened, shortened, whitened teeth. Breaking them knuckles to gums will feel even sweeter knowing they cost her a fortune.
On the kitchen chair, you spread your tattooed legs, which jut at the quadriceps, which he notices, which you know.
“I think she would really hate knowing we know she’s getting pounded into oblivion by the Viscount of San Fran.”
“And you would know…” his smile is a lighthouse, a starburst of delight. “Since you’re practically her, really. Gracias a dios for technology.”
Fuck. Don’t laugh at that. Ignore the challenge smile, the obvious taunt.
“Amen,” you nod. “Want to do something about it?”
Holding his gaze is the kind of effort that makes your head burn; and burn it does, and burn it does, as he steps closer, yes come come closer, you open flame.
“Only if you call me My lord.”
Continued here.

Mosaic Tile House Venice, CA
[Image description: a 9 gif stimboard; from left to right.
First line: A close-up gif panning over a glass door made from a mishmash of different cuts of coloured glass. A gif panning around an analog clock on a wall; mirrors & ceramic pieces, coloured letters, jewellery and other small trinkets are mosaicked all around the ticking clock face. And a gif of an outside structure's underside (the structure looks a little like roots) covered in mirror shards.
Second line: A gif of a porcelain cow skull with glass red eyes set in a pillar with mosaicked shards of mirror and ceramics. A gif in the pov of someone as they walk towards an intricate gateway, the gate has flowers and wavy interlocking painted metal. And a gif of water bubbling in a mosaic fountain, ceramic animal figurines are mosaicked into the back of the fountain alongside ceramic tiles and shards.
Third line: A gif panning down and over painted colourful tiles on a garden pathway, a gif of people reflected walking in a mosaic broken mirror (the shards are set in almost a starburst type of pattern). And a close-up gif panning over a glass door made from a mishmash of different cuts of coloured glass

Part two of that Vast Jon fic
This thing is taking on a life of its own.
Again - blame @3joryellow for this.
——
“Mister Sims? Come on, now, I know you can hear me. Hello! Mister Sims?”
He doesn’t know the voice.
He shouldn’t be hearing a voice at all.
The wind, the vastness, the emptiness of falling up forever and breathing nothing and breathing it all -
“Mister Sims!”
It’s so aggressively cheerful.
Bright, like sun, shining on many waters, piercing and impossible to ignore.
Like the sun, it leaves phosphenes behind his eyes, painful and sharp. “Go ‘way,” mumbles Jon, and is amazed that he can.
He doesn’t taste blood.
Wait.
“There we are,” says the voice, so absolutely happy.
Somehow, Jon opens his eyes.
They hurt.
Everything hurts.
A little old man is staring at him - a tiny, chipper skeleton of a person, whose bright blue eyes do not belong in his pink, bony face.
“What?” is all Jon can manage, inside and out. “Are you God?”
The old man cracks right the hell up, doubling over, which probably means no.
Jon’s face burns (and he is amazed it can). He doesn’t believe in God. He stopped going to church when they wouldn’t answer his questions, no matter what his grandmother said. He -
“Congratulations on your rebirth,” says the old man, wiping tears from his eyes. “Tell me, do you like your last name? You can keep it, of course, but I like to present the option.”
Jon stares at him. “I think I’ve missed something.”
The old man somehow smiles harder. “Well, that’s all right. You’ll figure it out soon. Tell me, how are you feeling?”
That’s a good question.
Jon finally looks away from the old man and finds he’s in some sort of… situation.
He’s wearing loose, white pajamas, sewn with blue thread, somehow like the sky. The room is an enormous space, too big for the intimacy of a bedroom. The walls are a sort of gentle beige that he immediately thinks of as summer dusk.
There isn’t much in terms of art; instead, there are tremendous mirrors with gilt frames so elaborate that, were they to fall, Jon thinks they might just break through the floor.
There is a balcony taking up the far wall, closed only by diaphanous white curtains, waving in the breeze.
And while everything hurts, it doesn’t hurt. Not like it should.
He wriggles his fingers and toes and is amazed to find he still has them.
“There, you see?” says the old man. “Come on, now. Sit up. You need to drink some water. You still need that sort of thing, after all.”
“Still… need?” Jon is not keeping up with this. He does, however, sit up.
There is one tenuous moment of vertigo. Then, it’s gone.
“Here you go, my boy,” says the old man.
The glass of water is as clear as meditation and cold as Tibetan frost.
Jon gulps it down.
He shouldn’t, he thinks. His body will go into shock and puke it, he thinks.
It does not, and he does not.
That’s when he realizes there is no IV.
There should be.
He checks his arms. No indication of puncture, anywhere.
Or scratches.
Or bruises.
He lifts his shirt.
There is a scar where the metal came through, a white starburst in his dark side, wrapping jagged lines around his torso like a hand made of lightning.
And in a moment of raw insanity, he finds it breathtakingly beautiful.
Then he finds it breathtakingly impossible. “What?” he says, and touches it.
Oh, it feels…
Good? It shouldn’t feel good. It’s a scar. But touching it is pleasure, if some kind he can’t begin to parse.
So clearly, he’s gone mad.
“Was I in a coma?” he blurts, thinking that his nerves must be fucked up, that his brain signals must be all backwards, that he’s got horrific brain damage that will ruin his career and his relationships and his life -
The old man laughs. “You’re a fun one! No, you weren’t in a coma. Before you ask, I pulled you out of the wreck today! No, nobody else survived. Well. By now, they haven’t. You’ve entered a very special club, Mister Sims!”
“Nothing you just said makes sense,” states Jon with great authority. “Wait! My camera!”
The old man holds it out.
Jon grabs it and clutches it to his chest like it’s his child, and spends a moment just breathing, hands shaking, so grateful it survived.
How the hell did it survive?
Maybe it didn’t. He checks it.
It did. And the photos on the screen are…
He inhales. I did it again, he thinks, because these somehow capture the vastness, the wideness, the inertia of falling in a way he’s never seen in other photographs.
They are somehow terrifying. Peering into them makes one feel like falling, feel like sharing that endless sky along with the photographer.
These are award-winning, he thinks.
Then he shakes himself, because he just survived a crash, and everyone is dead, and he’s being awful. “Lost my mind,” he mutters.
“Not at all,” says the old man. “I’m thinking, in fact, that it will be very important to share those with the world.”
“You looked?”
“Had to figure out who you are, didn’t I?” The old man grins like a bone-thin angel. “Simon Fairchild, at your service. My boy… I am about to blow your mind.” And he offers his hand.
It is reflex to take it.
And they are -
Falling?
Not flying. Not. Not with this gravity’s grip, this unbreathable air, this minimalizing and overwhelming and breathtaking second.
Literally breathtaking, flinging Jon through the sky, not weightless at all but lusted after by gravity in ways he cannot comprehend, by the neediness of falling without ever finding ground, the significance of a life of weight and worth and wiles falling away like leaves snatched from his hair.
And it is terrifying.
And it is glorious.
And Jon weeps, and the air licks his tears away as if with wind-burn tenderness, and he would not choose to do anything else even if given the option.

Sydney Vivid trip! A quick trip, whole thing took about... 30 hours, including travel time, but otherwise extremely fun. Thursday night was dinner at an Indian restaurant (beautiful, delicious food, but even the 'mild' was Extremely Burny), the Light Walk, and the most incredible gelato I've ever tasted, Friday had the Australian Museum and checking out the new minerals, delicious salad bowl from Fishbowl, and more gelato :D
If you're in Sydney (or Italy), go to Rivareno Gelato holy shit. The vegan hazelnut they had on special this week will only be around, I think, another couple of days, and is worth the trip tbh. I had it with the chocolate sorbet on Thursday night, and coconut sorbet on Friday.
More details, images, and thoughts on the Vivid displays under the cut:
For the Light Walk, we started at the Circular Quay end and went as far as Barangaroo. Didn't do the paid stuff, although I would have liked to see the gardens as well; unfortunately it just was going to be a little too much walking (as it is, I did about 6km). Here's what we saw, in order:
Between You and Me: This was actually a projection on the pylons of the bridge, but we watched from the other side of the harbour for the best view. Gorgeous animations of birds. There's an app you can use to access the audio for it, curated by Dr Ann Jones, one of my favourite nerds.
Sonder: Light tubes at the far end of the station structure. Pretty, but lots of people around it.
Inside Out: On the facade of Customs House. Banging soundtrack, gorgeous light. What a cool way to literally bring Florence Broadhurst's patterns to life!
The Hive: Definitely face the proper side for this, haha. Lovely lights, cool meaning.
Losting: Very cool to look at, but a bitch to photograph - too many mirrors! Was like a little pocket into a hidden world.
Supernova: Lowkey and fairly still, but the holes in the metal gave this really neat effect of flickering when you walk around it.
Barerarerungar: On the facade of the MCA, this was one of my favourites. Gorgeous light presentation and another really cool soundtrack, we stayed on this one for a bit.
Life Enlivined: This is the John Olsen stuff projected on the Opera House. Absolutely beautiful, although the sound app wasn't working for it, alas. Best view is from across the harbour right near Barerarerungar, if you're any closer to the actual Opera House you won't see it right. Goes between more abstracty, directly art-inspired displays, and cute animations.
Waterfall: Very lowkey. Neat, but not much to it.
Biotechture: Some lovely light, great kind of impression of the building being peeled back.
Superorganism: Lit-up tree! Simple, but extremely pretty.
Dandelion: This neat dome of these kind of starburst things. You could actually go inside this one, although we didn't because it was very crowded.
Monad: Absolutely gorgeous projection of circles, lines, orbits, stuff like that, projected on a screen of water. Mum was absolutely transfixed by this one in particular, haha.
Bump and Sway: Another fairly lowkey one, walk by and acknowledge it as you go, I guess. Light poles in water.
Ghosts: Fairly subdued, just some lit-up paper cranes.
Spirograph: Light fountain! Very pretty but surprisingly tiny?
Night Walkers: Frogs :D There are actually a few of these scattered around, not just in Barangaroo Reserve. They were super cute.
Night Whisper: Smaller installation, but just very aestheically appealling. Lightbulb surrounded by moths, about how we're all drawn to light.
Dune: Shifting triangle-square-y shapes, kind of hypnotic tbh o.o
The Last Ocean: One you can walk on! It's made of reclaimed ocean plastic. Was neat seeing the lights shifting under your feet.
Vivid House, feat. Infinity, Ama, Australian Oceans, and Invincible Corals: A mixed collection of nature-oriented stuff projected on four walls around you. My favourite was Invincible Corals, which showed these gorgeous growing corals, showed a depressing bleaching event, then regeneration with the spawning. Infinity was… pretty, but, um, not the best-animated, tragically!
What Lies Beneath: Very lowkey, it was just some stuff projected on rocks on the waterline and kind of… hard to make out, unfortunately.
The Tunnel: Brightly-lit neon tunnel in different colours and patterns, including rainbow. Had this fun part where you could actually control the patterns.
Lilies and Fish Are Jumping: Last two, kind of entwined. Lilies were these big floating flowery things, and Fish Are Jumping was this fun little thing surrounding them, which had these little darts of light shooting across arcs of wire, which looked a lot like jumping fish in the dark.
My favourites: Between You And Me, Inside Out, Barerarerungar, Live Enlivened, Monad.
Images! Very important lights:
Tumblr media
I know it's blurry, but here's the bridge, part of Between You and Me, and the cool lights playing over the sky.
