She had stars in her eyes, Yuni mused. Literal stars. As opposed to her metaphorical stars, Yuni continued to muse as she felt a spatial tempest begin to brew.
Mused might be an ill fit of a word here. She would be the first one to admit. Mused was too poetic. Too musty and soft. What she felt, it broke her heart as she looked up at the night sky from her perch in a tree and thought about the girl with stars in her eyes.
All because it was unfair.
She had stars in her prophecy but she felt like she was losing her star to the girl with stars in her eyes.
Yuni didn’t blame anyone. Least of all Hikaru. She was human, after all, and a dense one at that. Honestly, she had more flaws than Yuni could point out and yet, she made her heart race. She made her heart sing even.
She didn’t blame Lala, either. That would be catty, after all. It was all a part of Lala’s physiology as a fellow alien. Just another Samaan trait, like how not exactly long lived they were and how structurally challenged they were vertically speaking.
And yet, despite trying to be above it all, Yuni found her fingers curling in against her palm until her nails - her claws, really - pierced the flesh. She wanted someone to blame. She just didn’t want the holder of the blame to be someone she cared about so deeply, she had crossed universes to meet - even if she hadn’t realised it at first.
She wondered if Hakkenyan had known that her star was a person. It all seemed very romantic. Her feelings seemed that way. The way she was literally musing - pining - under the dualities of the moon and starlights. Thinking about what was keeping her from the object of her admirations. Yes, it was all very romantic.
It just wouldn’t make for a good love song, Yuni snickered to herself. Who would want to hear Mao moon about someone she couldn’t have? She was the cosmic mystery girl who took what she wanted. With or without permission.
Yuni sighed. That was probably the biggest mark that Hikaru had left on her.
Once upon a time, Yuni was a thief and a scoundrel, so hurt that she was inevitably hurting others. Hikaru made her realise that. Olyfio would want and expect more of her than for Yuni to be reduced to a common cat burglar. It just wasn’t nice. Wasn’t ethical. Two wrongs didn’t make a right or so said the saying.
It was annoying but it was something that Yuni was thankful for these days. She was grateful to Hikaru for getting that through her thick head and to show for it. The very things she had stolen had blessed her with a power and a magic beyond her wildest dreams.
She had that in common with Lala, she mused. And that was actually a musing! It was quick and clever.
Three humans. Two aliens. That was the team composition of the Star Twinkle Pretty Cure, put in charge of the Star Colour Pens as entrusted to them by the Star Princesses. So, it made sense that Yuni and Lala had things in common.
The biggest and most obvious being their crush on Hikaru.
But aside from that. They had something more precious in common as well. They were both aliens on the blue planet known as Earth. It was daunting and even overwhelming at times but Yuni treasured the memory that she had of spending time with Lala, after the action was over, in this very tree and watching this very night sky.
It felt good to recharge in a sense. Get away from all that human nonsense and just enjoy a good little bit of coming from a planet far, far away. Where they weren’t aliens. They were just the less than run of the mill inhabitant. Yeah, Yuni and Lala had that in common, too. Sure they were the Pretty Cure now but they used to be losers so Yuni appreciated the camaraderie of going from zero to hero.
Even if it was putting them at a crosshair at the final frontier known as romance dawn - and with a human, no less. Cure Star. Hoshina Hikaru.
Yuni sighed to herself. She felt a cold breeze on her skin. The weather was completely different here. It was… wet and moist for a better way. It was so dry and arid on Rainbow, but that’s what made the rain all the more special and the iridescent rainbows which would follow.
Even though it would make for a pretty poor love song, singing was the most important thing on her home planet. Serenades were the greatest gift they could give each other, to release emotions: good and bad. No way this one would become a Mao hit and yet…
Yuni began to hum. A melody came to her first but then as the song developed more. She came up with lyrics on the fly about a girl who was a star, about a girl who had stars in her eyes, and a girl who was chasing stars. And then she began to sing.
It wasn’t loud. It was just to herself and to an audience of literal crickets but it felt refreshing.
She was getting it all out. The jealousy and the pining. The acknowledgement of it all. And she was right. It was too soppy and gross and down beat to be Mao’s next number one hit but Yuni literally felt her feelings lighten and when she finished what she felt was the song, singing it to its natural conclusion, she was applauded.
“That was really good, Yuni.” Hikaru piped up from down below.
“Nya?!” Yuni screeched and she could have fallen out of the tree.
Luckily, she had excellent reflexes and caught herself doing it but that didn’t reduce how mortified she felt. She held onto the tree branch hard, until her claws pierced the bark of the tree and she looked down at the pair. They, in turn, looked up at her - and with stars in their eyes, both literal and metaphorical.
“Hikaru is right, lun, it was really good.” Lala added in agreement.
“Thank you. I, um, was just… singing. Nothing serious.” Yuni scrambled to say something. Anything.
“Mind if we come up?” Hikaru asked.
“Not at all.” Yuni replied softly.
She offered a hand of assistance but Hikaru didn’t need it. Lala, however, wasn’t quite as athletic as either her or Yuni, but once Hikaru was up, she - and Yuni - were able to help Lala up as well.
With all three of them on the tree, their weight was considerable on its branch. It bowed much more than it did if it was just Yuni. But it was oddly sociable to have all three up there and to Yuni’s surprise, she somehow ended up in the middle. Her tail instinctively swished between Hikaru and Lala, brushing up against their backs.
“What brings you out here at this hour?” Yuni asked.
“You.” Hikaru chirped.
“Me?” Yuni echoed.
“Lun,” Lala nodded, “I don’t know why but I wanted to see you, lun.”
“That’s sweet of you.” Yuni murmured.
“And I like sneaking out so.” Hikaru snickered, mischievous. “And I’m glad we did because you seemed really lonely tonight. Is something bothering you? Your song…”
“Indeed, it was a very sad love song, lun.” Lala added, concerned and her concern was genuine.
“I was just thinking out loud.” Yuni said. “But I’m glad you're here, too. I like you both, I hope you know that.”
She wasn’t sure if Hikaru was actually going to get what she was putting down. She was pretty daft and sure Lala was smart but in all actuality, she was just as bad as Hikaru for being dense. She had no clue about emotions and being tact with them but Yuni was pleasantly surprised.
Hikaru moved her hand on top of Yuni’s and on her other side, Lala’s antennae pricked up. She placed the balls of her antenna both on Yuni’s shoulder. From both sides of her body, Yuni felt oddly tingly and it wasn’t just because of the gentle surge of Lala’s electricity or Hikaru’s eccentricity. Or, okay, maybe it was just because of them.
“We like you too.” Hikaru said. “Like that, as well.”
Yuni had to blink, she felt her heart skip a beat and she, of all people, felt stars in her eyes.
