Some photos from Our Mutual Friend that are less familiar, to me at least.
I also found the one below on a Keeley Hawes fan Instagram, but unfortunately Paul has been almost cropped out of it. Annoyingly I’ve not been able to track down the full photo.

J M Barrie And Quality Street
#JMBarrie and #QualityStreet #ChristmasTreats
Kirriemuir’s most famous son, J M Barrie, is best known now for Peter Pan or The Boy who would not grow up (1904), but in the 1930s his play, Quality Street (1901) was just as familiar. Set in the Napoleonic era, it told the story of a respectable spinster, Miss Phoebe Throssel, who poses as her own flirtatious niece, Miss Livvy, to win the hand of a former suitor, Captain Valentine Brown, who…

Background Research for my Latest Novel
"Social Murderer"
My latest book, ‘Social Murderer’, brings together three themes.
1. I realised how much the characters in a book intrude into my mind while I’m writing a book. The clash between fictional characters and events in the author’s real life is a theme that has been applied many times. The book that comes first to my mind on this topic is ‘The Dark Half’ by Stephen King – which is mentioned by one of the characters in ‘Social Murderer’. Other books have also explored the theme, a recent bestselling example being ‘The Woman Who Lied’ by Claire Douglas.
2. In ‘Social Murderer’, the killer selects his victims from the internet, and social media in particular. Again, not a unique theme – I’m not sure there are never any new ideas in fiction, just different ways of telling a story. I recently read a novel titled ‘I See You’ by Clare Mackintosh which had an interesting spin on this idea.
3. The third component of the book is puzzles, a topic that has interested me all my life. Some of the subject matter in ‘Social Murderer’ is based on my own experience, although I never achieved some of the more exotic uses for puzzle-setting that occur in the book.
Research
The book is centred in the town of Mansfield, which I chose for two main reasons.
1. The book is quite dark in its theme, and if Mansfield brings any image to the reader’s mind, it’s probably a dark one.
2. The other reason is that my path through life has twice intersected with the town. I spent my early years of my life in Mansfield and my first memories are all located there – in a street whose name you’ll be able to guess if you read the book. I also worked closely for several years with a company that was based there.
For this book, I visited two locations: a certain stretch of the Kent coast (where my journey exactly matched that of the killer) and Pimlico which, regretfully, did not commend itself to me.
If you read my books, I would be interested in your comments. Feel free to get in touch – you can reach me via various social media.

It seems to me that the 2020s will, and already has been so far, be the Big Sondheim Revival Decade on Broadway and beyond.
While the decade began on Broadway with a flopped revival of West Side Story, it has been followed by acclaimed productions of Company, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and Merrily We Roll Along.
Off-Broadway, there was a production of Assassins in 2021 directed by John Doyle and produced by the Classic Stage Company. It had a high profile cast including Stephen Pasquale, Will Swenson, Ethan Slater, and Judy Kuhn. The production even received a cast recording!
Over in London, a revival of Pacific Overtures produced by the Umeda Arts Theater & the Menier Chocolate Factory opens in London this November.
While it's not a revival, I must mention that Here We Are, Sondheim's final musical, debuted off-Broadway last week to positive reviews. It's cast includes Steven Pasquale, Rachel Bay Jones, and Amber Gray, among others.
Cameron Mackintosh's latest Sondheim revue, Old Friends, began a limited West End run in September to great success. It stars Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga.

13 Questions About Books
Tagged by @boyd-clowder thank u very much for the tag :3c I also read way less than I used to, probably because my semesters are so insane that I'm brain fried all summer long now 🫠
1. The last book I read
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I read that one in a little under 48 hours (I'm depressed). Read that one at the same time as a comic by @raphodraws which was great :3
2. A book I recommend
Hmmm. Probably Testaments by Margaret Atwood or Into the Water by Paula Hawkins! Both are really good.
3. A book I couldn't put down
Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony was really good. So was Larry McMurtry's Horseman, Pass By.
Wait, does it have to be a book? I recommend everyone read the introduction chapter to Tom Lynch's Xerophilia. It'll change your brain.
4. A book I've read twice (or more)
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, all of the Gangsta. manga series by Kohske, Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black, Mohsin Hamad's Exit West, The Rabbi's Cat by Joann Sfar...I reread a lot of things.
5. A book on my to-be-read
Preaching and the American Novel by Dawn Coleman
6. A book I've put down
I have put down a few books, for several reasons. I have also MENTALLY put down books, but I've had to finish them for class. A book I put down because I keep getting busy is Stephen King's Dreamcatcher. A book I mentally put down but was forced to finish was Daughters of the North by Sarah Hall. Worst book I've ever read (but a close second is The Water Cure by Sophie Mackintosh). A book I didn't like and didn't finish was Captive Prince, may have been by C.S. Pacat.
7. A book on my wishlist
Um...I actually have no idea. Maybe Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldua? I'd like to own a paper copy of that. Otherwise...no idea. I don't really look for books unless I'm working on something.
8. A favorite book from childhood
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi!!
9. A book I would give to a friend
Depends on the friend. Off the top of my head, I would give someone The Darkest Part of the Forest, The Testaments, or Joy Harjo's Poetry Warrior. Or! Spatial and Discursive Violence in the US Southwest by Sánchez and Pita.
10. A fiction book I own
King Henry IV by Shakespeare (best Shakespeare play to exist)
11. A nonfiction book I own
The Origins of the Modern World by Marks (a must read if you would like a historically accurate, non eurocentric view of the colonization of the world during the 1500s and how England and Spain caused an ice age!!)
12. What I am currently reading
The first Fence comic by C.S. Pacat, and also something else but I can't remember,,
13. What I plan on reading next
I'd like to read Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer next, but...we'll see. I may stop reading soon to preserve my brian energy for the upcoming semester.
My shelfie:
Tumblr media
It's a pretty old picture from a few years ago, back when I still lived at our old house. My current bookshelf is a sad state of affairs. I have like 10 books here in my apartment. Boo.
My tags (no pressure): @jackest-jack @idkwhattoputformyusername @raphodraws @prismaticate @somsnosas
Thank u again @boyd-clowder , it's been a long time since I contemplated my books :]

Note
I've heard some homophobic people say that now it's popular to support people and our church members are taking the easy way by not calling gay people to repentance. I don't see it that way and wondered what you think when people say that
I wouldn't say it's "popular" or "taking the easy way" for a Mormon to be affirming of queer people and supportive of their full inclusion in the LDS Church.
In 2023, professors still can lose their jobs at the church's BYU schools if they stray too far from the LDS Church's homophobic and transphobic teachings despite what the science and consensus is in their fields. Members who post support on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media can expect pushback from other members.
While our church leaders may have softened their rhetoric and made some changes, such as allowing people to keep their temple recommends even if they support gay marriage, the core beliefs on these topics haven't changed much. So no, I wouldn't say it's "popular" in the LDS Church to stand for full equality and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.
With that said, certainly it's easier in 2023 than it was in 2013, easier than it was in 2003, easier than it was in 1993, easier than it was in 1983, easier than it was in 1973 for a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be affirming of LGBTQ+ people and to come out of the closet as yourself, at least in the USA.
We can thank queer people like Bayard Rustin, Christine Jorgensen, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Frank Kameny, Harvey Milk, Gilbert Baker, Leonard Matlovich, Steve Endean, RuPaul Charles, Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, Laverne Cox, Lori Lightfoot and many, many others who were pioneers and moved American society to be more tolerant and accepting of queer people.
And from the LDS Church, a number of individuals have bravely stepped forward and spoken their truth & shared their experience, and that's led to awareness and eventually to increased understanding. People such as R. Joel Dorius, Leonard Matlovich, Paul Mortensen, Stephen Holbrook, Carol Lynn Pearson, D. Michael Quinn, Stuart Matis, Ty Mansfield, Mitch Mayne, Kendall Wilcox, Josh Weed, Dustin Lance Black, Jimmy Hales, Tyler Glenn, Tom Christofferson, Troy Williams, Xian Mackintosh, Laurie Lee Hall, Kris Irvin, Stacey Harkey, David Matheson, Charlie Bird, Matt Easton, Emma Gee, David Archuleta, and many others
