Some stuff near the Menai Straits today.
A fungus of some sort on dead wood, possibly Stereum hirsutum. Gorgeous epiphytic fern, common polypody (Polypodium vulgare) on oak branches. Some sort of fancy red elf cup fungus.

Went on a walk today in the forest (Northern California) and brought back a bonanza of pictures.
First four photos are of a couple of beautiful and weird mushrooms called Elfin Saddle (Helvella vespertina).
The next little cup-shaped fungi is possibly a 'Toothed Cup' (genus Tarzetta), then a goopy pink substance that is possibly 'Crystal Brain Fungus' (myxarium nucleatum). Next are two photos of what is probably 'False Turkey Tail' (stereum hirsutum). All of these fungi were growing out of rotting wood. It's been raining heavily for the past few weeks (including yesterday), so it's a good time for fungi.
The purple wildflower is a native with a weird common name-- Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum). It's, uhh, also called Wild Hyacinth, but honestly, why would I call it that when I could use 'Blue Dicks'? The yellow flowers are meadow buttercups (Ranunculus acris), a naturalized flower originally from Europe.
There was also a ton of mosses, lichens, ferns, insects, birds, and others. Just stuff to see everywhere. After living in the desert for so long, it's such a relief to hike in a place like this. Plus a gorgeous waterfall at the end of the hike.

A gorgeous Golden Ear - Naematelia aurantia
"Naematelia aurantia is a parasite of Stereum hirsutum, growing on and often completely enveloping host basidiocarps. Following its host, fruit bodies are typically found on dead, attached or recently fallen branches of broadleaf trees." source

very very many sulphur tufts, a hares foot inky cap, a super vibrant stereum hirsutum, adorable purple edge bonnets, some hairy parchment, very small staghorns, and a video of me violently attacking (/j) a toxic clitocybe fragrans :]

An old tree spotted on a mush expedition, it’s been taken over by what I believe to be Stereum hirsutum or “False Turkeys Tail”
Many layers to this fella, I dread to think what would happen if the spores got into my dead wood collection
Looks like forbidden kebab 7/10

I found another fungus!
I’m pretty sure this one is Stereum Hirsutum, otherwise known as a False Turkeytail (in the UK).
It’d be confusing if it were the other False Turkeytail, the American one, as iOS app Shroomify Mushroom ID says that Stereum Ostrea are the 3287th most common fungus in the UK.
Staying on topic, the way to tell False Turkeytails from their- seemingly more sought after- distant relatives, is to look at their undersides. ‘True’ Turkeytails will always have a white underside, visible holes marking their pores:

However, False Turkeytails will always have an orange and smooth (or perhaps a bit wrinkly) underside:

Although, isn’t it a bit derogatory to call a whole other species, only related by class, a ‘false’ version of another, just because they have similar caps?

Don’t worry Hirsutum, you’re a real one to me..
