'Cinema in 2023 was full of excellent double-acts, from Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon to Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes’ May December. No doubt, the aforementioned foursome will receive a scattering of Oscar nods, but if the Academy have any sense, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott of Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers will also receive plaudits for their remarkable achievement in the haunting love story.
Adapted from Taichi Yamada’s novel Strangers, Haigh’s awards hopeful sees Scott take the role of Adam, a screenwriter trying to reconnect with memories of his deceased parents who encounter their ghosts when revisiting his old family home. Meanwhile, Mescal’s Harry searches for companionship in Adam, his only neighbour in a tower block devoid of other inhabitants.
Thanks to his role in Haigh’s film, as well as celebrated appearances in the James Bond movie Spectre and the BBC drama Fleabag, Scott has gathered a loyal following, recently sitting down with Letterboxd to discuss his favourite movies of all time.
First on his list is another movie from Haigh, 2015’s 45 Years. A modern classic that delves into themes of love, loss and regret, 45 Years tells the story of a couple soon to celebrate a major wedding anniversary who hear the news that the body of one of their former lovers has been discovered encased in ice following a historic skiing accident. Though sounding rather absurd, 45 Years is a truly phenomenal drama.
Elsewhere, Scott names the spoof movie Airplane! as another of his favourites. Popularly known as one of the best comedies of all time, Airplane! inspired similar copycat films in the late 20th century, including the Scary Movie franchise, largely thanks to its offbeat humour that refused to let up, with almost each and every line being a one-liner delivered by some of the era’s greatest actors, including the iconic Leslie Nielsen.
No list of favourite movies is complete without a classic from Steven Spielberg, with Scott praising the “first film I ever saw”, 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. “It still does something to me,” the actor said of the celebrated film that tells the story of a young boy who becomes best friends with an alien who crash-lands on Earth, only for the pair to be pursued by the authorities.
The final film to grace his list is the 1993 Richard Attenborough movie Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins, who gives an “extraordinary performance” according to Scott. Certainly one of Hopkins’ most underrated films, Shadowlands is a biography of C.S. Lewis, the writer of the 1950’s novel The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, whose life was changed after he met the poet Joy Gresham.
Andrew Scott’s favourite movies:
45 Years (Andrew Haigh, 2015)
Airplane! (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, 1980)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982)
Shadowlands (Richard Attenborough, 1993)'

Which companion is most likely to wander off?
this tournament was suggested by @a-tad-bit-obsessed a little over a year ago
a penchant for wandering off is a core trait of practically every companion, but who is first out of the starting blocks even when its incredibly dangerous, who cannot stay put no matter how imperative, who can the doctor not afford to let out of their sights?

hey!! love your blog SO much, and I was wondering if you had any song recommendations for Husk? like songs that suit him?
Alright Anon!! I am soooo sorry this took so long but like I mentioned, character playlists are not something I've ever really dabbled in so I had no idea how to answer this the first couple days. Im still not sure this is what you were hoping for, but I really tried!! If anyone has any songs they'd like to add please do so!!
Instrumental Jazz reminds me of him the most, so here's a couple:
Literally anything by Everette Harp is something Husk would either play or be listening to in his downtime - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRbDjUjLefpmSmdJU6ycpFQ
Next Journey by Robomoque - https://youtu.be/mxy0k9BQ00Q?si=9KuvpVL3IvPGBF-u
Lets Get It Started by Jeffery Smith - https://youtu.be/tYXTP4yp3J4?si=6tCIdwrIoVW3Z8R7
If I Could Fly by Vincent Ingala - https://youtu.be/U8ijrDVTkpg?si=XuBBIkFf9w16ZqPm
General Husk vibes, songs that remind me of him or his nature towards others in some way:
Sixteen by The Heavy (gives me biiiigg Overlord Husk vibes) - https://youtu.be/wQw4geA7xYU?si=Y6rLYZI9iVLjA87j
Losing My Mind by Mystery Skulls - https://youtu.be/n5TpNmS4OX0?si=hfFwZsrDcFqsZhfg
Hellbent by Mystery Skulls - https://youtu.be/X79sXBYYgIQ?si=3JFy9Z1j2uIPDiGA
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes - https://youtu.be/0J2QdDbelmY?si=vVo3DEU3GJhvLgzy
7 Years by Lukas Graham - https://youtu.be/Q0bnAmfGQC8?si=8tNP7CUiIvc7OjBU
World's Smallest Violin by AJR - https://youtu.be/wUvw374tP7o?si=2CpqEJoYnx5f7ezN
Under Pressure  by Queen and David Bowie - https://youtu.be/a01QQZyl-_I?si=5WmbjzygPlw8jOTr
All The Kids Are Depressed by Jeremy Zucker - https://youtu.be/d_So8lwTHAg?si=RVhhDbzD97SxPbWK
Devil On My Shoulder by Chelsea Cutler - https://youtu.be/0qhDFoPPfp0?si=lqw3SEDxMdEo82Y7
Breathe (2 AM) by Anna Nalick (This is the vibe I think of when thinking of Husk doing his job as a bartender. Listening to others but knowing there isn't much he can do to help other than remind you to breathe…) - https://youtu.be/SiE_0AugUPY?si=q1hfRHnaW8z3xGwM
Escapism (feat. AJ Michalka, Zach Callison and Grace Roleck) (Yes i’m putting a steven universe song here, the vibes are too good) - https://youtu.be/cy57UnoAgCY?si=JjtVr-eeziyKBycZ
Mr. Blue by Catherine Feeny (This song gives me many emotions…If you know where it’s from then I am kissing you) - https://youtu.be/pvfzcGbOzqg?si=mPFVd8yYyhDeb8hP
Bonus! Husk in a relationship:
Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 - https://youtu.be/to5Sg2KeEnU?si=9_gqF3M3yLeiNET4
Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding (Alex Goot and Sam Tsui Cover) (My fav cover of this song, so sweet~) - https://youtu.be/gga359vkhzk?si=GNOtAIC0afKbwt41
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by Scarlett Johansson and Bono from Sing 2 (The original is amazing, but the first time I heard this cover I felt chills. It’s so soft and sad but builds to a more hopeful and happy ending. Very fitting for Husk’s relationship I feel.) - https://youtu.be/fVSrtw20BxA?si=DjZZ669XFSdHsx4F
Stay With Me by Sam Smith (T Pain live cover) (my fav version of this song ♥) - https://youtu.be/0Bi7qvzFIgA?si=5D-o2Xu6phDskSem
Just Give Me a Reason by P!nk feat. Nate Ruess - https://youtu.be/6-jsRJ_gkO0?si=YsxgYRa-caQGdW7o
Misbehavin’ by Pentatonix - https://youtu.be/ywYfMlyIkeo?si=CCw8G3gzN-dAbe0j
Anchor by Mindy Gledhill - https://youtu.be/cB3BWmCOW2Y?si=AyfqjlmPbEl4MqAO

@Steven Zucker, Smarthistory co-founder
Giambologna, Abduction of a Sabine Woman, 1581-83
Giambologna depicted Sabine maiden as the young woman who is being lifted up; her abductor represents Talassius. Even if he did not himself take her in public, his men took her for him, and he took her in private, stealing her virginity. And the old man below represents her father, since the story, as I have said, tells that the Romans robbed the Sabines from the arms of their father."

This Month in History - December
There are quite a few landmark anniversaries I'm celebrating this month:
Dec. 2, 1988: The Naked Gun opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1988, the first of Zucker-Abraham-Zucker's cop spoof was released. Here is my piece I got in 2018. Happy 35 NG!
Dec. 5, 1973: Band on the Run released
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1973, Paul McCartney and Wings best album (possibly the best Non-Beatle album he did) was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 50th BOTR!
Dec. 6, 1968: Beggars Banquet released
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1968, the 9th U.S. album from The Rolling Stones. Earlier this year I got to review the Record Store Day reissue of the album. I'd definitely put this up there with Let It Bleed and Exile on Main Street in the pantheon of Classic Stones albums. Happy 55th BB!
Dec. 6, 2013: Inside Llewyn Davis opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2013, the Coen Brothers' criminally underrated folk musician epic was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 10 ILD!
Dec. 10, 1993: Wayne's World 2 opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1993, the sequel to Wayne's World was released! It might not be as loved as the original, but it is better than people think. I wrote about this in 2018 and director Stephen Surjik wrote me back with some thoughts. In 2022, I saw it on the big screen at Nice, a Fest. Happy 30th WW2!
Dec. 10, 2003: Big Fish opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2003, one of Tim Burton's most underrated movies was released. Taking Burton's visual style and combining it with a family drama with fantasy elements was a gamble that paid off. It's something that feels new each time I've seen it since. Happy 20th Big Fish!
Dec. 11, 1998: Rushmore and A Simple Plan both open
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Dec. 1998, two of my favorite movies from that year opened on the same day. Here is my piece I wrote about Wes Anderson's film and Sam Raimi's film. Happy 25th Rushmore an ASP!
Dec. 12, 1973: The Last Detail opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1973, Hal Ashby (who was on a roll at the time) had one of his best released. It was one of the great movies of the 70s. It was also one of my Top 5 Boston Movies of All Time! Jack Nicholson was in rare form as he and Otis Young played Navy men transporting younger sailor Randy Quaid to the NH Navy prison and showing him a good time along the way. Happy 50th TLD!
Dec. 14, 1988: I'm Gonna Git You Sucka opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1988, Keenan Ivory Wayans' 70s LOL comedy opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 35th IGGYS!
Dec. 14, 2018: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2018 one of the best Spider-Man movies was released. I actually named it my #7 Movie of 2018! By diving into the Miles Morales storyline, they took the Spider-Man story we all know so well and made it seem new again. Just last Summer they released the awesome sequel: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released. Happy 5 S-M:ITS-V!
Dec. 15, 1978: Superman opens
Tumblr media
Speaking of super hero movies: In Dec. 1978 one of my favorite big screen Superman movies was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 45th Superman!
Dec. 15, 1993: Schindler's List opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1993, one of Steven Spielberg's finest works was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 30th SL!
Dec. 16, 1988: Rain Man opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1988, the Oscar-winning Best Picture and biggest grossing film of 1988 was released. With the exception of parodies (i.e. The Hangover's Vegas gambling scene), nobody talks about this as much. The road movie of long lost brothers one autistic (Dustin Hoffman) and the other selfish used-car guy (Tom Cruise) was actually quite touching. Sure it was the 80s feel-good movie era and whatnot, but the performances were among both actors' best. Happy 35 RM!
Dec. 17, 1973: Sleeper opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1973, one of the funniest movies ever made about the future was released. Woody Allen was in his prime when he played a man who is cryogenically frozen in 1973 and is defrosted 200 years later. This is definitely one of his funniest ones. Happy 50th Sleeper!
Dec. 17, 1993: The State premieres
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1993, the now-legendary sketch comedy series of NYC comedy group The State premiered on MTV. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Earlier this Fall, I actually got to see The State reunion tour when it was in Boston. Happy 30th TS!
Dec. 17, 2008: The Wrestler opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2008 Darren Aaronofsky's greatest movie was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 15 TW!
Dec. 18, 2013: Her opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2013, Spike Jonze greatest movie was released! Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 10 Her!
