I actually made 33 emotes, affectionately known as Aegirglyphics to some, for my own personal use on discord. However, I figure why not share some of them! They're free to use for discord servers/icons/pfps or whatever. However, my only request is Do NOT use them as subscriber emotes on Twitch. You can make them free follower emotes but you are not to make them locked behind a paywall.

The other day I was hanging out with my partner and I got overwhelmed and wasn't able to communicate verbally, which happens sometimes, and I ended up stringing together various discord emojis to communicate. This then prompted my partner to provide me with my own communicative emojis to use, which is so sweet!! Even though I am able to communicate through words the majority of the time, it has been fantastic to have the addition of special emojis :3

I have been worried about trying alternative communication, and while the reasoning behind taking this step was a frustrating necessity, I am very glad to have gotten access to a wider range of ways to communicate :3

the pushback against the discord mobile update shouldn’t be based upon “if you can get used to it” or not. some people might like it. some people might get used to it faster. but a lot of people won’t. and the point of the pushback is that discord keeps thinking they can change this shit and get away with it.

nobody asked for discord to change its color to a brighter blue. remember that? we all got used to it. but that was one of the first instances of the userbase just tolerating a useless change.

later came the dreaded username change. nobody asked for that. in fact, it caused a fuck ton of trouble. remember the markipkier username situation? yeah. but we all just “got used to it.” i don’t hear anyone talking about it anymore. we moved on, even though it really fucking sucked.

now it’s a complete overhaul of the mobile app that removed pretty much everything people liked about discord in the first place. removing the right swipe to see members and pins just made everything clunky and slow. the swipe to reply they replaced it with doesn’t even work all the time. the nice and cozy gray is now colder and darker, which would be fine, but there’s literally a midnight mode that they just released out of beta after 7 years. (edit: i actually used the app for a little more and realized just how fucking hard it was to read anything with the new contrast. it's a genuine accessibility issue. jesus)

they removed the community. want to see which friends are online? fuck you! click the top of the channel that is much slower and cumbersome than just swiping! want to see the funny and/or important messages you pinned? too bad, because we’re cutting off longer messages and hiding links/images that were attached to the message. and also, you can’t see who sent the message in a dm or group chat. also^2, you have to click into the channel and click into ANOTHER tab to even access the pins. fuck you.

regardless of if you like the changes or not, the point of protesting isn’t due to personal preference. it’s that discord keeps thinking they can change this shit that nobody wanted and get away with it. staying complacent will just let them know they can roll out changes and their userbase will still stick around, even if they hate it. which is not true. because users (including my friends and i) and even NITRO USERS are considering jumping ship to alternatives that don’t hate its userbase.

don’t let discord think it’s invincible. send feedback (go to settings and appearance, and there will be a button), even if it’s likely they won’t read it. review them in the app store. if there’s enough genuine feedback that outlines the faults and focuses on the performance and usability of the app, there’s a chance they might change Some things. because we don’t WANT to move and leave all our friends and communities, but a lot of us will have to if the situation gets worse.

the best case scenario is that they let us choose the format we want, but considering that this is discord we’re talking about, i don’t think it will. the least we can do now is to make sure at least some things get changed back for accessibility and convenience.

Long-Distance date/bonding ideas I've learned while making it work with my femme

Streamed Movie Night: Discord has a function that let's you stream video and gaming alike! I'd recommend Nitro because otherwise stream quality is gonna SUCK (and you need to do some weird fiddling to get services like Netflix to work) but you can enjoy movie night with your boo

Tabletop Simulator: If you both have about $20, and a computer with even a low budget graphics processor, this program is invaluable. The base games are neat but the real trove is in the Steam Workshop. Mod makers upload hundreds of boardgames from Catan to Azul to outright heavy ones like D&D and Warhammer. My femme and I now have a weekly boardgame night (she actively challenges me at strategy games and it makes me so happy to have a partner that does 🥰)

Coffee shop dates: Go to a place where the shop has wifi (or you have a really good data plan with your phone), pop your headphones in, and just video call. I promise you, there will be more people there who find it sweet than those who find it weird.

Spotify Jam Sessions: I don't know about other music apps, but we both have spotify and it now has a function that let's you invite others to a shared listening session. Music is really important to both my femme and myself, and the ability for us to literally listen at the same time and talk about the music is truly quite lovely.

Parallel crafting time: Admittedly, I'm Neurodivergent as hell, and parallel play baseline is big for me. But pop on a videocall and make some crafts together. Bonus points if you get similar materials and share what you've made together

Call every night: no seriously, even if you both are busy the entire day and can't talk, call for at least a half hour or so to round your day off. That lack of certain forms of intimacy means you need to be really on top of other forms. On top of affirming love for one another. If you're trying to make long distance work long term, calling to just. Be with eachother is so important.

Schedule Time: As an extension of the above, just because you're calling every day, doesn't mean ensuring you have dedicated time for eachother isn't important. I'm talking like. An afternoon/evening once a week type thing. Be together for a long period of time while you can't be physically together.

Technology has honestly made what I always thought impossible for myself feel possible. The advent of videocalling my femme every day helps so much of the potential pitfalls that could have happened, and the best part is its more or less free (I pay for discord nitro but I digress). Don't get me wrong I'm having my hard days still. The inability to hold her when I want to take care of her is particularly bad. I show care and love through things like physical touch and food so much. But getting creative, and being consistent have really made this feel possible and sustainable until we get to the "next stages" bridge.

pissed abt the new discord mobile update so heres my rant.

the new hud is ugly, laggy and impractical. the lil servers button will ALWAYS have a blue light unless you read every server message which is dumb. they should have an option to turn that off or revert it back to the old HUD (like how reddit has its current site and its "old site HUD" verision), it feels laggy to swap between servers and messages and its slow, making it hard to balance having two conversations at once. you cant even see which people are online in servers by swiping to the side anymore and have to press the search button (which takes a moment to even load, adding more to the lag factor), not to mention, messages look weird now since you ALSO cant side swipe to see whos online/status messages, you must press the search tab and then itll lag to load and show up like how instagrams messaging system does, with it separating the media sent, link and some other stuff. overly complex and unneeded.

not to mention, the new "midnight" color background doesnt even look midnight, you'd expect it to be pitch black on all parts but instead they made it blueish, which is dumb and knowing current discord, they'd put pitch black behind the discord nitro color themed backgrounds (which is also stupid but thats a whole other can of worms.)

overall the new interface is annoying, laggy, UGLY, and hard to traverse, the seperation of areas was unneeded, made worse by the fact that discord themself have said that a setting to make it go back to normal wont be made and if anyone doesnt like it, to delete their accounts. (most likely not caring due to the fact that they have no competition in purely texting apps), it is also full of glitches such as: people being able to send messages but it STILL being in the text box, being so laggy its unuseable and from what ive seen, nobody online is happy as it completely removes all user-friendly access to things and makes it generally hard to use.

I think the ultimate weird clingy Internet thing I've seen lately is people who don't seem to get that you take what you dish / social interactions are a two-way street. There was someone in one of my Discords (one that was largely a pre-existing social group at that, that formed around a lockdown-era social thing, but that still welcomes new people) post a wahhhhh woe is me message about "just don't really feel like I fit in here, everybody seems to already be friends and I'm just not sure if anyone likes me" etc. where this was like, her fifth post that she ever posted in there. All four of the other ones were three months previous right after she first joined the server. Yeah, hon, if you never fucking post, no one's going to know you, and therefore they're not going to particularly seek out your online company or ask after you or whatever. Because there are hundreds of people in this thing and we don't know you because you haven't made yourself knowable or memorable! This would be like going to the second meeting of an in-person club you just joined and whining that you're not already besties with the other members.

Like, I'm in a bunch of Discord servers, some of which I'm more active in than others. Some I'm literally just in for the emojis (I have Nitro) and I never post. I wouldn't go into one of those and throw a fit if nobody knew who I was. I would expect that. And it's not because I'm some terrible unlikable person but because I am a stranger to them

....But if you do a big tearfest because you "don't fit in" somewhere where you've never tried to fit in, never offered anything in return for the attention you feel so entitled to, yeah I'm probably going to think you're not really someone I want to interact with in the future. I'm not a fan of guilt trips, especially completely unreasonable ones like that.

I also have to say that I'm a person with social anxiety who often gets unreasonably worried about what people I only kinda know are thinking about me, and I still don't understand this behavior. Don't understand feeling like someone like that person does, definitely don't understand thinking it's something I'd ever want to actually voice. I have the autism and the ADHD and the depression and anxiety and all the things that make social skills hard and I still am baffled at how terrible the social skills are of some people online, people who are well into their 30s-40s, and wonder how they have survived on planet Earth for so long. Wonder how some of these people are married with kids. The mind boggles. I just have to assume with some of them, it's that something about Online makes them go particularly insane.

What is Feyfinder I’m interested

Feyfinder is my friends and I's 4th pathfinder campaign- only this time WERE ACTUALLY PLAYING IT....

We've had 3 previous fake campaigns but really it was about writing a story together and having our characters interact. Feyfinder is unique because it is subject to unexpected change through how we play the game.

@midiquartz is the GM and is the main writer of the plot of Feyfinder. He works insanely hard. He does pixel art for the game board, trims and remixes sound effects (for discord nitro sound board), queues up music for ambience, and puts an incredible amount of thought into every character's story and design. (idk how much i can show off w/o embarrassing him but look at his sprite work its so cute!)

My friends and I are really psyched about Feyfinder! I'd really like to help Quartz and Kitsy make into an official story one day. To me it really does feel like my favorite tv show/comic book that i have to wait to experience. It makes it extra fun!!
