The Ocean Sciences Building at the University of Washington in Seattle is a brightly modern, four-story structure, with large glass windows reflecting the bay across the street.

On the afternoon of July 7, 2016, it was being slowly locked down.

Red lights began flashing at the entrances as students and faculty filed out under overcast skies. Eventually, just a handful of people remained inside, preparing to unleash one of the most destructive forces in the natural world: the crushing weight of about 2½ miles of ocean water.

In the building’s high-pressure testing facility, a black, pill-shaped capsule hung from a hoist on the ceiling. About 3 feet long, it was a scale model of a submersible called Cyclops 2, developed by a local startup called OceanGate. The company’s CEO, Stockton Rush, had cofounded the company in 2009 as a sort of submarine charter service, anticipating a growing need for commercial and research trips to the ocean floor. At first, Rush acquired older, steel-hulled subs for expeditions, but in 2013 OceanGate had begun designing what the company called “a revolutionary new manned submersible.” Among the sub’s innovations were its lightweight hull, which was built from carbon fiber and could accommodate more passengers than the spherical cabins traditionally used in deep-sea diving. By 2016, Rush’s dream was to take paying customers down to the most famous shipwreck of them all: the Titanic, 3,800 meters below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

Engineers carefully lowered the Cyclops 2 model into the testing tank nose-first, like a bomb being loaded into a silo, and then screwed on the tank’s 3,600-pound lid. Then they began pumping in water, increasing the pressure to mimic a submersible’s dive. If you’re hanging out at sea level, the weight of the atmosphere above you exerts 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi). The deeper you go, the stronger that pressure; at the Titanic’s depth, the pressure is about 6,500 psi. Soon, the pressure gauge on UW’s test tank read 1,000 psi, and it kept ticking up—2,000 psi, 5,000 psi. At about the 73-minute mark, as the pressure in the tank reached 6,500 psi, there was a sudden roar and the tank shuddered violently.

“I felt it in my body,” an OceanGate employee wrote in an email later that night. “The building rocked, and my ears rang for a long time.”

“Scared the shit out of everyone,” he added.

The model had imploded thousands of meters short of the safety margin OceanGate had designed for.

In the high-stakes, high-cost world of crewed submersibles, most engineering teams would have gone back to the drawing board, or at least ordered more models to test. Rush’s company didn’t do either of those things. Instead, within months, OceanGate began building a full-scale Cyclops 2 based on the imploded model. This submersible design, later renamed Titan, eventually made it down to the Titanic in 2021. It even returned to the site for expeditions the next two years. But nearly one year ago, on June 18, 2023, Titan dove to the infamous wreck and imploded, instantly killing all five people onboard, including Rush himself.

The disaster captivated and horrified the world. Deep-sea experts criticized OceanGate’s choices, from Titan’s carbon-fiber construction to Rush’s public disdain for industry regulations, which he believed stifled innovation. Organizations that had worked with OceanGate, including the University of Washington as well as the Boeing Company, released statements denying that they contributed to Titan.

A trove of tens of thousands of internal OceanGate emails, documents, and photographs provided exclusively to WIRED by anonymous sources sheds new light on Titan’s development, from its initial design and manufacture through its first deep-sea operations. The documents, validated by interviews with two third-party suppliers and several former OceanGate employees with intimate knowledge of Titan, reveal never-before-reported details about the design and testing of the submersible. They show that Boeing and the University of Washington were both involved in the early stages of OceanGate’s carbon-fiber sub project, although their work did not make it into the final Titan design. The trove also reveals a company culture in which employees who questioned their bosses’ high-speed approach and decisions were dismissed as overly cautious or even fired. (The former employees who spoke to WIRED have asked not to be named for fear of being sued by the families of those who died aboard the vessel.) Most of all, the documents show how Rush, blinkered by his own ambition to be the Elon Musk of the deep seas, repeatedly overstated OceanGate’s progress and, on at least one occasion, outright lied about significant problems with Titan’s hull, which has not been previously reported.

A representative for OceanGate, which ceased all operations last summer, declined to comment on WIRED’s findings.

i read the recent wired article about the ocean gate titanic sub and i think the most understatedly eyebrow raising aspect of that whole debacle honestly is that the ceo seems to have been personally manning half their unsafe deep sea dives... like usually in a story like this it turns out the people at the top were brushing off safety concerns because they knew they personally could avoid consequences and were willing to risk their employees and customers. and im sure there were some people at ocean gate doing that. but stockton rush was as far as i can tell genuinely convinced of his own genius corner cutting engineering hacks to the point where he kept manning these vessels even after tests where they were failing and warnings from university labs and boeing engineers and hearing the hull make ominous creaking sounds while he himself was piloting it like... man with zero survival instincts to a point seldom seen in wealthy startup assholes who absolutely have the financial wherewithal to save their own necks

Man, just the more comes out about Universal's Treegate, the more I hold back cackles. Now birds and their protections may be brought into this...

I know some people are saying "It's a massive studio, they can afford the fine :(" or even suggesting this was a calculated risk to break the strike...

But counterpoint, I think some people at Universal are going to be PISSED to realize they may have spent a small movie budget as some tentative calculations are proposing this may end up costing for all the fines and replacement trees, to inconvenience strikers for like a day (because there are now tents there and people can prepare with umbrellas and such).

Rich people LOVE hoarding money and hate spending it, that's why the last out-of-touch-billionare disaster had Stockton Rush insisting carbon fiber in a submersible was *innovative* but buying an absolutely garbage grade of it.

Not to mention the public backlash against all of this. They've got people chanting for tree law mob justice (TREE LAW TREE LAW TREE LAW TREE LAW) when I think they thought (deludedly) the average person would just shrug it off or not even notice the trim. Trying to pretend the hack job is somehow all NORMAL when people do notice, saying it's a yearly thing they do.

Winter in Charming was one of those things that you had a love/hate relationship with. You loved being all snuggled up in the covers with a hot drink watching your favorite winter movie, you especially loved being wrapped in Opie’s arms under a blanket on the couch. However, you hated being out in the cold and you hated when Opie had to be out in the cold as well.

This was one of those times.

The club had to make a run to Stockton to work out some kind of trade deal from what you understood. When Opie left, you made sure he was wrapped up in a thick jacket and that his warmest beanie covered his head and ears. He gave you a loving kiss and an ‘I love you’ before mounting his bike and heading off to meet the guys at the clubhouse.

You watched him and once he was out of sight, you realized just how cold it was outside. Shivering, you re-entered your home and made a beeline to the master bedroom, specifically to Opie’s side of the closet. You dug through his shirts until you found what you were looking for — your favorite sweater of his. The second you slipped it over your head, you were instantly welcomed with warmth and comfort. His cologne still lingered on the sweater from the last time he had worn it despite having been washed, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

With Opie on the road and the kids in school, you decided to take some time to warm yourself up before running your errands and meeting Tara for lunch. You made yourself a hot chocolate with marshmallows piled high and curled up on the couch. If only I could stay here all day.

It was as if the universe heard your thought. Your phone began ringing, checking the caller ID you see it’s Tara. You answered and she informed you that she couldn’t meet for lunch today due to being swamped with surgeries all day long. Before ending the call, the two of you made plans for next week.

As much as you didn’t want to get up and run your errands, you knew you had to, unfortunately food wasn’t going to magically appear in the fridge. You let out a sigh and headed out the door with your purse and keys in hand.

Once the errands had been completed, you returned home and put away your groceries. After that you took your seat back on the couch, where you stayed until you heard the familiar rumble of Opie’s motorcycle. You heard the jingle of keys and the lock turning, the door opened revealing your gentle giant of a man entering your shared home. “Welcome back!” You beamed, jumping up from the couch and pulling him into a kiss which he happily reciprocated. “Thank God you’re back! I was so bored without you.” You spoke dramatically, eliciting a laugh from Opie which in turn had you laughing too. You loved hearing his laugh, it was so contagious and music to your ears. That laugh and his bright smile instantly made any bad day better.

“Luckily for you, it was a quick and easy trip.” He stepped back from you and studied what you were wearing. Opie had this feeling that something was different but he didn’t know what it was until he looked you over. “Is that my sweater?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. He knew it was but he wanted you to admit it.

“Nooooo…?” You answered, playfully nervous with a matching facial expression. You knew he didn’t care, in fact, he loved seeing you in his clothes. They way you drowned in them was something he found so adorable.

“I leave for half the day and come back to my girl in a stolen sweater from my side of the closet. Unbelievable!” Opie returned the playful teasing. “I’ll just have to steal something from you in return.” A mischievous smirk crept upon his face. The next thing you knew his lips were on yours. A stolen kiss. If this was always the outcome of stealing his clothes, then you’d never stop.

How do genocide scholars define genocide, and what steps are taken to define a mass killing as a genocide? I feel like I'm seeing the word thrown around a lot lately in questionable ways, and I want to know what the experts think.

Historians and genocide scholars--including Timothy Snyder, who I heard speak on this in person in regard to Ukraine a few weeks ago--follow the definition laid out in the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Source.

Four days, 10 witnesses, and dozens of exhibits in the US Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation hearing on the Titan submersible implosion have made public a flood of information about the doomed vessel’s design and operation. But one thing the hearings have not yet explained is why the submersible suddenly failed on a sightseeing trip to the Titanic in June 2023, nor who might shoulder the blame for the deaths of its five crew.

Here’s what we know going into the second and final week of hearings, and some key unanswered questions.

The Two Sides of Stockton Rush

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who died piloting the Titan, took the bulk of the blame during the hearing’s first two days. Tony Nissen, former director of engineering, characterized Rush as someone who made critical decisions based on speed and cost, changing his mind on a daily basis. Nissen said that Rush eventually fired him over his insistence on scrapping the Titan’s first carbon fiber hull on safety grounds.

David Lochridge, a former director of marine operations for OceanGate, then testified that Rush had once made piloting errors on the company’s first submersible during a dive to the wreck of the Andrea Doria, panicked, and threw its controller at Lochridge’s head. “He would blame everything on everyone else,” said Lochridge. “It was bullying.”

Lochridge said that several critical components had even been assembled using parts from a home improvement store at Rush’s direction. When Lochridge made a whistleblower complaint to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration after being fired for raising multiple safety concerns, Rush retaliated by suing him and his wife for breach of contract and fraud.

Rush did have his defenders. Renata Rojas, who traveled on several OceanGate expeditions, called Rush “very fair” and flatly denied Lochridge’s account of the Andrea Doria confrontation. Fred Hagen, another paying passenger, lauded Rush as a brilliant man who made a conscious effort to maintain a culture of safety in a high-risk environment.

“It wasn’t supposed to be safe,” he told the panel. “It was supposed to be a thrilling adventure.”

Titan’s Unusual Design and Development

Nissen made a credible defense of his initial design for the Titan, but several witnesses testified that it skirted, or simply ignored, accepted construction practices for submersibles. OceanGate tested only one scale model of the innovative carbon fiber hull and, despite it failing early under high pressures, proceeded straight to building a full-scale hull. Dave Dyer, an engineer at the University of Washington, testified that his lab stopped providing engineering support to OceanGate in 2016 after disagreements that included the company’s insistence on using glass control spheres that Dyer feared could explode at depth “as though a bomb had gone off.” Those spheres housed control electronics for the Titan’s thrusters.

Instead of scanning the first hull to look for defects or specifying a finite lifetime of dives, OceanGate relied on an unproven acoustic monitoring system to provide an early warning of failure. Lochridge called the Titan “an abomination” and its carbon fiber hull “disgusting.” Both he and Nissen said that they would not have dived in it.

After they left, the Titan was rebuilt with a new hull that was never tested to industry norms nor certified by an independent third-party agency. Patrick Lahey, CEO of submersible maker Triton Submarines, said that certifying a novel hull was not only possible but essential for safety.

“We were developing and certifying the deepest diving sub in the world at the same time they were developing this amateurish contraption,” he testified. “There was absolutely no reason they couldn’t have got it certified.”

A History of Troubled Titanic Missions

OceanGate’s first missions to the Titanic in 2021 were beset with problems, including the Titan’s forward titanium dome falling off after a dive, worrying readings on the acoustic monitoring system, and a thruster failing at 3,500 meters’ depth. One Coast Guard evidence slide showed 70 equipment issues requiring correction from the season’s dives. Things improved slightly the following year, with only 48 recorded issues. But these included dead batteries extending a mission from around seven to 27 hours, and the sub itself being damaged on recovery.

One dive in 2022 ended with a mysterious loud bang and cracking noise upon surfacing. Antonella Wilby, an OceanGate engineering contractor, was so worried about this bang she considered alerting OceanGate’s board of directors. She testified that another employee warned her that she risked being sued if she did so. “Anyone should feel free to speak up about safety without fear of retribution, and that is not at all what I saw,” she said. “I was entirely dismissed.”

On the Titan’s penultimate dive in 2023, contractor Tym Catterson admitted to failing to carry out a safety check; the Titan was left listing at a 45-degree angle for an hour, piling up those on board.

Conflicting Views on the Carbon Fiber Hull

There was conflicting testimony on the safety of the Titan’s unique carbon fiber hull. Dyer pointed out that carbon fiber could be a good fit for deep submersibles, and Nissen was adamant that computer modeling and the acoustic monitoring warning system meant that it could be used indefinitely. Lochridge, Catterson, and former HR director Bonnie Carl were all far more skeptical about the hull’s design and implementation. But all three acknowledged that they were not engineers.

Next week’s appearances by Nissen’s successor, Phil Brooks, more submersible engineers, and a carbon fiber expert from Boeing should address many of these questions. In particular, testimony next Wednesday from an engineer at the National Transportation Safety Board’s Materials Laboratory about the Titan’s wreckage may identify the physical cause of the implosion.

Where Was the Coast Guard?

At several points, investigators pointed out that the Titan should have been inspected by the US Coast Guard before carrying paying passengers. None of those questioned could say why it was not, despite OceanGate apparently contacting the Coast Guard on multiple occasions to provide notice of its underwater operations.

Lochridge also testified that OSHA had told him in 2018 that it had communicated his safety complaints to the Coast Guard. At least one of the five US Coast Guard witnesses being called next week is based in the Puget Sound, near OceanGate’s headquarters, and may be able to speak to this.

US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Lockwood, who joined OceanGate’s board in 2013, is not on the witness list. Lochridge and Carl testified that Lockwood’s role was to provide oversight and smooth interactions with the Coast Guard.

Missing Witnesses

Nor is Lockwood the only notable absentee from the witness box. Multiple witnesses this week testified to the key roles of OceanGate employees, including Wendy Rush, Scott Griffith, and Neil McCurdy, in making crucial business, regulatory, and operational decisions throughout OceanGate’s history and on the day of the accident. None are being called to testify. Nor have any of the hulls’ manufacturers been called. The Coast Guard has not provided a reason for this other than to deny that it is because those witnesses would have asserted their Fifth Amendment rights to refuse to answer questions.

3. "Yep. I'm still here, didn't teleport through the steel walls, ain't going anywhere, so you can fuck right off." She waited for his footsteps to recede, but they never did, "Like seriously, you're now gonna watch me while I sleep? Fucking creepy."

4. "It was either the radio or I start singing off-key, and I doubt you'd like that."

5. "I will have you know I've been throwing knives since I was 15,", she nodded towards the knife block at the counter, "keep talking and you would find out my actual aim."

6. "Your face is kind of hard to forget." "Was that a compliment, Deputy?" Sabrina rolled her eyes, "You wish."

The University of Minnesota is in hot water after it appointed an anti-Zionist as director of its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

Raz Segal worked as a professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Stockton University in New Jersey.

But Segal has spent his career bashing Israel, equating everything it has done to survive and defend itself as genocide.

Karen Painter and Bruno Chaouat resigned from the department’s advisory board in protest of Segal’s appointment:

“Dr. Segal has positioned himself on an extreme end of the political and ideological spectrum with his publications on Israel and Gaza, including an essay in which he accused Israel of genocide a week after the October 7 terrorist attacks,” Painter wrote in her Friday night resignation email to Provost Rachel Croson and Interim President Jeff Ettinger. “The CHGS director is ideally a scholar whose principal area of research and public commentary is the Holocaust itself, and certainly should not be an individual publicly identified with extremist positions on the present Middle East war,” she wrote. “We need a center director who will bring our community together to understand how the Holocaust and other genocides occurred, not someone who blames Israel for the rape and murder of 1,200 civilians, and kidnapping of hundreds more.”

Six days after the October 7 massacre, Segal wrote “A Textbook Case of Genocide” in Jewish Currents.

You’d think it’s a piece about the massacre, describing it as the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust.

Nope!

The piece is a sympathetic piece towards Gaza, criticizing Israel’s treatment of it. In other words, “Can you blame Hamas for attacking, murdering, and kidnapping Jews?” He also brags about his anti-Zionist studies and works throughout his career.

Israel defending itself is textbook genocide.

What is the 'Engine Rulebook' and where did it come from?:

So, this really early era of railways was a bit insane, and I am not quite well-versed enough to make a case-study out of everything - but like with my Big 4 scrap post, this is more about trends than singular examples - though some do appear.

The 'Engine Rulebook' is basically the set of rules that every engine ever is taught when built. It's a series of important rules, customs and doctrine used by managers to keep engines in line. Yes, I will use a little business-management theory in here, because early management styles have a major effect. And every railway has its own rulebook that may have differences. But there are a few key things in the 'Engine Rulebook' that I see being universal:

1: The company comes first. This is basically the company ensuring loyalty by indoctrinating the engine to see its railway company as the most important aspect of their life. In the Railway Series, Donald and Douglas have very strong ties back to Scotland and the Caledonian railway - which is why they enjoy blue so much. It's the Caledonian Railway colour! And then there's Duck - who literally continues to wear his GWR colours even after joining the NWR. He's deeply connected to the GWR because of this loyalty taught to him.

2: Railway rules. This includes signalling, signage, speed limits, whistles and their uses, headcodes, flags and every other piece of railway rules. They are read the rulebook, and learn everything in it. It's vital! Percy is an industrial engine who is never taught this rulebook - because industries don't have many engines and often pilfer bits from a bigger company's - and thus Percy doesn't know much about the rules of being on a railway when he arrives on Sodor.

3: Etiquette (based on duty). Now, I don't mean bowing or curtseying or the proper fork for fish - I mean the ins and outs of the duty the engine will be expected to complete. Passenger engines learn how to handle coaches and speak politely to passengers, freight engines learn how to handle trucks and look after different cargos, shunting engines learn a new set of rules for the yards - this sort of thing. Gordon struggles with trucks because he was never taught how to handle them.

4: The managers are always right. Touched on this in a reblog of this @mean-scarlet-deceiver ramble, but its basically that the engines are taught that their managers are right in all contexts (unless breaking one of the above rules) and need to be respected and have all directions followed. The manager says to shunt - you go and shunt. They say to go get scrapped - and a good engine listens without hesitation. Doesn't work out in real life all the time - see Oliver, or the Big Engines' strike - but it definitely keeps most engines in line.

So we have these four core rules - but where did they come from? Well...

Regency Era Railways:

Straight off the bat - this is the era where every railway is figuring itself out. The L&MR was where everything was forged in fire - before it, the only railways that existed were isolated plateways in mines and the Stockton & Darlington Railway. None of these were anywhere near as complex as the L&MR, which is really the first railway 'system' in the way we might understand today. It's also where the first sentient engines begin to make a proper appearance and have an effect on people. Before, they were hidden in mines, if they existed at all - but now the public can see them!

Like, imagine this rocks up to collect you in an era when the most advanced method of transport is literally a horse. And it has a face. Remember, in this period people though that if they went over a certain speed or through a tunnel they would explode - so now the thing that might just kill them has a face?!

Managers would very quickly begin implementing ways to soothe their passengers. One way of doing that would be to dehumanise the engines - I can see many early engines being given basically no education because they are both seen as being 'working class' and because they are machines. When Rocket first ran, there were no public schools.

In this era, engines didn't know much, and they were isolated on their little systems. Yard managers are one of the few people with authority that these engines meet on a regular basis, and they use this to their advantage and cultivate this idea that the engines are entirely subservient to them. This is where that manager loyalty begins to become apparent - just not quite in its modern form.

The only education an engine would get is how to be loyal. Why should they learn signals, or passenger etiquette, or how to read? That is a driver or a guard's job. And so this really early era is characterised by dehumanisation and a lot of public-relations officers doing their best to downgrade the sentience of the engines. It's a lot of "yes they have a face, no they don't have intelligence, don't worry". This does extend into the Victorian era, as seen in Very Old Engines, as Skarloey arrives on Sodor with some principles taught at the workshop, only to be met with "you don't have rights, do your job." Which he naturally rebels at and then gets covered in a tarp for his troubles.

Of course, the Regency Era ends very soon into railway history, and just in time for a major game-changer.

The Victorian Era:

1838 is the year the first GWR train runs, and this railway in the South-west of England will have a huge impact on all railways that come after. First, the entire board of directors are very elitist and influential in parliament. This is a railway that needs to live up to its owners.

It is the GWR, not the L&MR, that writes the first book on engine learning. It's also the GWR, and not any other railway in the UK, that first develops a proper corporate culture for its engines that they actually like. The GWR does this by actually treating the engines like they have sentience.

Engines like Iron Duke are introduced to the 'Great Western Way' - this being the rulebook that Brunel and Gooch develop to best serve their wealthy owners. These engines are taught to read, understand the rules of the railway, passenger etiquette - which by now can be taught because there's less fumbling around blindly - and perhaps most importantly: they are taught a very proud mindset. The railway is the most important aspect of their lives, and they are to serve it to the best of their ability. All four of the rules appear in their first form here, except that the etiquette is not entirely based on duty, and instead all engines are taught all jobs - which horrified much of the rest of the railway companies.

But while this is going on on the GWR, the rest of the country's railways were trying to survive a crisis. Railway Mania swept Britain, and hundreds of engines and built (and destroyed) by the week. One thousand bills for new railways were submitted to parliament during this period, and while not all were built - it certainly had an impact. The LNWR was formed during this period, chunks of the Midland Railway, NER, GNR, GCR, Caledonian and basically every other major railway were all constructed in this time frame - but that didn't mean a drastic improvement in how the engines were treated in this area. Many North-western railways were influenced by the thinking from the L&MR, leading to entire fleets of early engines having zero clue how to act or even speak in some cases. When the bubble collapsed, many engines were scrapped - and this is where the other extremely important pillar stone of railway doctrine was introduced: engines are expendable, and should not want to hinder a company. The fourth rule is set into stone here, and goes unchanged and practically unchallenged all the way into the modern era.

This here, the end of steam in Britain, is able to happen because of principles introduced during Railway Mania. British Railways uses this rulebook and the laws that most likely surround it by this point to justify their actions, and also because thanks to this rulebook very few engines have the vague notion or idea to protest. Why would they, it goes against the rules!

The eradication of steam is almost directly caused by the era of Railway Mania and the principles managers introduced in the era to protect their profit margins. Without that doctrine, engines would have had a lot more rights and a lot more ability to protest being scrapped.

In other words, the 1840's was when scrapping began to appear properly, as well as the explosions, derailments and every other crash from the previous generation. Engines became unfeeling in this era - in the north at least. The GWR escaped this by being... well, not an economic bubble.

However, as the British Isles emerges from Railway Mania, two very strong railways vie for influence: the LNWR and the GWR. The LNWR has that traditional L&MR mindset - and it leads to a huge problem. The engines begin to learn how to speak from their crews, and moreover they question why their GWR counterparts are treated so much better. The LNWR also suffers from a number of easily preventable accidents caused by the engine having zero clue what to do.

Some railways land between the two, and it was the GNR that ended up formulating the four rules in their next evolution: engines were only taught their jobs. This was the GNR compromise with their board members. The board wanted a GWR approach, however the actual managers on the ground rebelled, worrying this would lead to the engines working together to demand fairer treatment. The Communist Manifesto was in major circulation at the time, and none of these companies wanted their engines getting any ideas. Instead, they implemented something of a class system, with express engines at the top and shunters at the bottom.

In the TVS, Emily is extremely abrasive towards Thomas (Seasons 8-12), and it may just have to do with the way she was raised, seeing shunters as the lowest form of engine. Gordon certainly did!

These three very distinct practices all melded and fused together on the Midland Railway - which of course ran right in between them all. The Midland Railway wrote the third proper rulebook in 1859, roughly twenty years after the GWR wrote its.

The Midland Railway's rulebook took the LNWR idea that engines needed to be taught to accept death, the GNR idea of a class system and the GWR importance of company loyalty and railway-rule-knowledge and fused them together, being able to create the rulebook that most British railways would use by 1890. The major exception to this was of course the Great Western, which slowly evolved its rulebook to use the LNWR ideas of engines being subservient to their managers while retaining the classless form of etiquette the engines were taught. The GNR would also hold out on some ideas from the GWR until it was amalgamated into the LNER, due to rising fears of Communism by the board.

Many smaller railways, such as the Furness Railway or the Highland Railway in Scotland, would use the GWR style, due to the smaller size of the workforce, and thus the potential necessity for engines to complete duties they were trained for.

Duck fits into his role at Tidmouth with such ease because he knows the theory behind every express train, every freight train, every style of shunting and branchline service. He doesn't need them, but the GWR engines were taught this just in case. Duck is excellent at his job, but he won't take any flak from the other engines because his GWR ideology makes him see them all as equal. This is of course part of the Great Western Way as explained in this post.

In direct contrast, Gordon has zero clue how to pull a freight train, and stalls on the hill because he physically doesn't know what to do.

And this brings me quite neatly to Sir Topham Hatt I. See, this is a GWR man who runs a railway that is very heavily influenced by the Midland Railway rulebook ideology. Edward knows how to do multiple tasks because the Furness Railway used GWR practice (maybe that's why he likes Edward?) while none of the other engines do. Sir Topham Hatt's management style using GWR practice is so confusing to them. Why is James - who is mixed-traffic at best - pulling the express? Why is Gordon pulling freight? Why are the big engines shunting?!

And then we have Henry. Sir Topham and Henry have such a rocky relationship, and it in many ways comes from the fact that Henry had none of the formal education that I just discussed. He's a privately-built engine from stolen plans sold cheap. He doesn't actually know the etiquette of a passenger train - no wonder he stops when he doesn't like the weather! He doesn't physically know better, and so he's acting on his first instincts. This clashes so badly with the GWR style which places etiquette almost above everything else. Hatt reacts so badly and outright insanely to this because to him, Henry is actively and deliberately breaking every rule in the book because of his paint? And Henry doesn't have a clue. Look at how horrified he is!

And don't get me wrong, this is extremely unethical and very stupid, but it has a precedence in miscommunication, differing ideologies and Henry's foolishness.

Summary: You had found out who Elvis was to your mother and yet you are still in love with Elvis, even if he was the one who helped make you, but what if he finds out about your truth? Will he still love you?

You screamed as you pushed, Elvis, pulled you closer and kissed your temple "You can do it baby." he muttered softly into your ear as you lay on your bed with big, white towels under you, the home doctor and midwives between your spread legs "Push! She's crowning! One more strong push!" the doctor exclaimed, with one more scream, you pushed as hard and strongly, after what felt like an hour, a sweet strong baby's cry piercings the room like an arrow. The doctor quickly cut the biblical cord and handed your baby to the midwives to get clean. Elvis kissed you deeply, and with tears in his eyes, "Thank you, baby..for giving daddy another chance." he spoke softly, a happy smile you had seen on your wedding day, you smiled back as the doctor pitches you up.

"Mr. Presley, Mrs. Presley." the oldest midwife approached you, the baby wrapped up warm in her arms "It's a sweet baby girl," she smiles and laid your daughter on your bare chest "What will be her name?" she asked, you put a shaky hand on her little back, in slight disbelief, you and your husband made this little human out of love for each other. You looked at Elvis, eyes wet with happy tears "Tia. Tia Jesse Presley." you looked at Tia and kissed her little head.

"B-Boss?" a henchman ; Harrison pokes his head into your shared room and winces back when Elvis glared at him, Elvis kissed your cheek, and Tia's head before getting up, pushing the man out and into the hallway "What?! Don't ya see my wife just gave birth!" he whispered-yelled, Harry gulped "We-I found out who killed your late wife Boss." he handed a folded to Elvis which he snatched out of his hand, turning his back to harry and opened the folder.

Inside made his heart stopped. A picture. His daughter, his love, his wife killing her mother, his late lover, and his late wife. "Were you find this?" Elvis asked holding hard on the folder "They had a video camera in case of an intruder. then this was the only photo I found" Elvis closed his eyes, and every type of emotion hit him at once "Thank you, you'll be awarded." He handed the folder back not sparing a glimpse at harry and walked back into your bedroom .

"Take the baby," Elvis ordered the doctor " Yes Mr. Presley," one of The Midwives scooped up Tia, and left the room with the other midwives and the doctor. "Is everything, okay Daddy?" you questioned, resting against the puffed-up pillow "Did you kill her?" "What?" "DID YOU KILL MY WIFE?!" Elvis screamed fiercely "Elvis, I am your wife! She tried to kill me! I had to fight back!" "LAIR! YOU FUCKING BITCTH! I MEAN MY WIFE YOU KILLED!!! IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU I WOULD BE HAPPIER!!" His blue orbs were like a starless night "You don't mean that. YOU DON'T MEAN THAT! Elvis, we love each other!" You wailed "I loved her. And you took her away." Elvis stormed to you and dragged you out of the bed "Elvis, baby, you're hurting me!" you cried trying to stand and follow him as he speed-walked down the hallway.

"This is where you'll stay until I can figure out what to do with you." He throws you onto a twin bed in a small room. "You'll see Tia when she has to be freed," Elvis spoke quietly and calmly, his back to you "w-wait! Elvis, please!" you tried to get to him but he shut the door, "PLEASE!" you wailed sliding down the door, the painful sobs jerking your body.

It's been two days since Elvis locked you in here, and as he said you only saw your little girl when you breastfed her those were the moment you cherished, and you missed Elvis, even if he did this to you. You rested your back against the bed frame and waited for them to bring Tia to you, you sat up as footsteps echo down the hall to your room. The door was unlocked and Jerry walked in" "Jerry?" you asked breathlessly, you haven't seen him since Elvis had him on a mission for a week "I heard what happened and I don't believe you'd kill somebody unless your life depended on it, I'm gonna prove it. For you and Elvis." Jerry assured softly "Elvis..is he ok? How is he?" you moved closer to him, and a sad smile appeared on Jerry's face "Not so good. He still loves you so much but he's hurt and when he's hurt he shuts himself down. His anger and temper are worse than before." you frowned. Footsteps and Tia's cry had you both turn to the sound "I got to go. I promise I will find out the truth." Jerry hurriedly left the room.

You softy sang 'you're my sunshine' to yourself, sitting against the bed, missing your husband and your newborn baby, you gasped as the door slammed open and Elvis fell onto his knees in front of you, embracing you tightly "I-i'm sorry Darlin'! I shoulda believed ya. You're my wife and my future, forgive this fool." Elvis pleads, nuzzling his face into your neck, you reach your hand up to play with his soft hair "I forgive you, my love but if you ever do this again, I will never and ever have sex with you." you threatened, soft tone turning into a low intimidating one, Elvis gulped and looked at you with wide scared ocean orbs "Yes. Princess." he nods "Boss, Mrs?" you and Elvis turned to the slightly frightened henchman, holding Tia.

You gestured for him to hand over, and you cradle your child when she was in your loving arms you lifted part of your shirt to breastfeed her, a smile on your face as your Daddy sat beside you and pulled you to him, watching his little family. 'Thank you, God, for this little family'.

Jerry smirked as he watches dread and tears fill harry. Just as he was about to open his mouth to plead a bullet pierce his brain and the wall behind him. The dead weight of him knocked over the chair, Jerry just stared down at his corpse before spitting on it "Dumb fuck." Jerry shook his head as he walked out.
