Photos by @amivitale. I am excited to share another important milestone and exciting step towards the future of the northern white rhino!! FIVE new northern white rhino embryos have been created, bringing the total to 22! This is a remarkable step from the extraordinary @biorescue_project, a team of scientists and conservationists from @leibnizizw @OlPejeta conservancy @safariparkdvurkralove @kenyawildlifeservice & Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) This is a series of images when oocytes were collected from Fatu on July 28, 2022 at Ol Pejeta in Kenya. This nourishes HOPE to produce new offspring and gives this keystone species a new future. The consortium places the highest value on respecting the life and welfare of the individual animals involved and regular veterinary and ethical assessments of oocyte collection procedures show that Fatu handles the procedures well and shows no signs of detrimental health effects. #NorthernWhiteRhino #SaveTheRhinos #Science #Sciencematters #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #Nature #NatGeo #OlPejeta #OlPejetaConservancy #Kenya#StopPoaching #TheLastTwo @MinistryOfTourismAndWildlifeKE @natgeo @nikonusa #amivitale #kenya #NorthernWhiteRhinos #nikonambassador #dontletthemdisappear https://www.instagram.com/p/CiNyFLNuW9k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#awareness Reposted from @savetherhinointernational Do you know what rhino horn is made of? A rhino’s horn (or horns) is what makes rhinos so unique to many people. It is their characteristic trademark, but what is a rhino horn made of? It's often mistakenly shared that rhino horn is made of ‘compressed hair’. However, whilst their horns are composed primarily of keratin, a protein also found in human hair and fingernails, this isn't the case. Rather than being made of hollow fibres, rhino horn grows in layers from specialized skin cells, which become hard due to a process called Keratinization. At the centre of the horn, there are layers of calcium and melanin, two materials that help to keep it even tougher. Just like a horse’s hooves or a turtle’s beak, rhino horn is solid! Find out more about a rhino's horn on our website - link in bio. 📸 @LaraWildlife #rhino #savetherhino #rhinoceros #saverhinos #rhinoconservation #conservation #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #wild #savetherhinocharity #leadingthecharge #illegalwildlifetrade #endwildlifecrime #stoppoaching #protectrhinos #saverhinoceros #savewildlife #poaching #wildlifepoaching #rhinopoaching #BlackRhino #BlackRhinoceros #Big5 #Horn #Hair #Keratin #RhinoHorn #BlackAndWhitePhotography #WildlifePhotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CnFn3AwyS9H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Photographer Ami Vitale follows a baby elephant at mealtime, at northern Kenya's Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Orphaned after his mother died from falling into a ditch, Meibae has lived at the sanctuary for four years. Half-gallon (2 liter) bottles of special formula are given every three hours around the clock—and drinking is a noisy, slurpy affair. Reteti is the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa, where orphans learn to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds. Here are our TOP 10 REASONS TO LOVE ELEPHANTS: 1 - Their presence alone is captivating and mesmerizing. 2 - Elephants are highly intelligent creatures, known for their remarkable problem-solving skills. 3 - Elephants have strong family units and exhibit caring behaviors towards their offspring. 4 - They have a hierarchical system with strong matriarchal leadership, where experienced females guide the herd and make critical decisions based on their knowledge and experience. 5 - They contribute to seed dispersal, promote vegetation growth, and create water holes, thereby influencing the overall biodiversity of their habitats. 6 - Elephants have a sophisticated system of communication, utilizing a wide range of vocalizations, tactile signals, and even infrasound, which is below the range of human hearing. 7 - Elephants possess an exceptional memory, which aids them in recognizing individuals, remembering migration routes, and recalling valuable resources. 8 - They often display a calm and tolerant demeanor, captivating observers with their peaceful interactions and harmonious existence within their social groups. 9 - Their foraging habits and movements help to control vegetation density, promoting a healthy balance within ecosystems and influencing the availability of resources for other species. 10 - They have been revered as symbols of wisdom, strength, and good fortune in various cultures, reflecting the deep connection between humans and these magnificent creatures. These are just a few reasons to love and appreciate elephants. Their unique qualities and intrinsic value remind us of the importance of conservation efforts to ensure their continued existence and to protect the biodiversity and ecological balance of our planet. #savetheelephants #stoppoaching #soulflower #soulflowerbuds #weloveelephants #elephantart https://instagr.am/p/CuqCj8ftWwT/

Photo by @amivitale. Did you know giraffes and oxpeckers can be the best of friends? Animals help one another out all the time in the wild and they don't even have to be the same species! It's called a "symbiotic relationship" and this fellow on the giraffe's neck is eating delicious bugs that live in the coats of giraffes. Birds also are a great alarm against any potential danger and will chirp loudly if there are predators nearby. I would call this a perfect relationship! The birds get their protein and in return the harmful ticks are removed from this giraffe's coat. I photographed these two inside Niger's Giraffe Zone, a government-defined region where giraffes and humans co-exist.Today there are barely 600 West African giraffe in existence so creating a satellite population of the highly endangered giraffe was undertaken by the Nigerien government with help by a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation) and Sahara Conservation Fund. Learn more, including how to get involved, by following @amivitale and @giraffe_conservation @nikonusa #DontLetThemDisappear #giraffe #giraffes #savegiraffes #stoppoaching #niger #westafricangiraffe #africa #everydayafrica #environmentalism #conservation #amivitale https://www.instagram.com/p/CfpyBFssovO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost Jody MacDonald Photography with @get_repost ・・・ Photo by Ami Vitale // Happy World Wildlife Day! Want to do something good for wildlife today? My friend Ami Vitale is offering this incredible opportunity through Omaze. Here are the details: Repost from Ami Vitale // Donate $10 and you will automatically be entered to win a visit to this sublime place called Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Ol Pejeta Conservancy) where the last two northern white rhinos in the world live. (Link in profile.) Here, Wildlife Keeper Zacharia Mutai comforts an orphaned southern white rhino at Ol Pejeta (Ol Pejeta Conservancy) in Kenya. At the end of the 19th century, southern white rhino were on the brink of extinction with only one small population of 20-50 animals remaining in South Africa. Today, thanks to one of the most successful collective conservation efforts of the century, there are now thriving populations in east and southern Africa and there are now 20,000 of these amazing creatures. Despite this rebound, poaching remains a massive threat to all rhinos and each individual is carefully cared for and guarded. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves. Help support Ol Pejeta Conservancy today and maybe even win a trip there yourself with me at omaze.com/rhinos. #OlPejetaRhinos #NorthernWhiteRhinos #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #africa #happyfriday https://www.instagram.com/p/B85io7go9n2/?igshid=2g5p1h579vlo

Reposted from @wildforchange In collaboration with authorities, @conservcongo helped to arrest three suspects who had two tons of ivory in their possession on May 15th in the southern city of Lubumbashi, DRC. These suspects are active members of probably the biggest network of ivory dealers in Africa. They were caught during a sting operation after more than three years of investigating this network. The operation was spearheaded by authorities (ICCN, national police and Lubumbashi magistrate court) with Conserv Congo, who is fighting the scourge of wildlife trafficking in the region. The gang, which is said to have imported more than 20 tons of ivory and more than 2 tons of rhino horn from Southern Africa in the last five years is well connected to other criminal networks from South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and other Southern African states. The revenue from these illicit activities has been invested in various businesses such as real estate and liquor supply as a way to launder the dirty money. The seized contraband worth over 6 million dollars on international market, is probably the biggest inland seizure on the continent in the last decade and represents, unfortunately over 150 slaughtered elephants. This arrest has shaken and perhaps dismantled the biggest ivory dealing gang on the continent. The suspects were placed in custody, awaiting to appear in court to take a plea. The contraband shall be handed over to the custody of the Director general of ICCN in an official ceremony as per the law in the coming days. Other members of the gang are on the run and being sought by the authorities. This. Is. Conserv Congo. If you would like to make a donation to a worthwhile cause, please help @conservcongo continue to make a difference in dismantling wildlife trafficking networks and protecting the wildlife we have left.
