Here's why Hallucination Bucky haunting Buck is amazing (there are many reasons but here's a big one): Bucky doesn't even have to be dead.
Sure, Bucky being dead works perfectly in this kind of AU. The inability to save Bucky leaves Buck bereft and alone in the world, so he holds on to the memory of Bucky so tightly he starts to see him again.
But!
The ambiguity of is Bucky dead or not is better. The reader doesn't know for sure, and Buck doesn't know. Hell the fic writer doesn't even need to know for sure. Leave that ending open y'all!
Buck having to go through his day swearing that Bucky is alive. He's fine. Bucky has to be fine. Him being fine is the only reason Buck can power through his day. He won't accept anything else until someone brings him Bucky's body.
And that can do a lot to a man's psyche.
Imagine it. Buck standing around Thorpe Abbotts after reassuring Harry and Rosie that Bucky is fine, he's simply back with the men taking care of them. Then he hears it. Bucky's laugh. He whirls around desperate and near joyous because of course Bucky made it out, of course he's laughing and about to yell at Buck to get his attention. Except what he finds isn't the John "Bucky" Egan that he left in Germany.
Instead, he turns around and sees the John he sent to London. Standing straight backed with cheeks that haven't gone through a diet of turnips and 'rabbit' soup, still wearing that awful sheepskin that Buck knows he traded away (Jack had given it back to him the moment he saw Buck) is His Bucky.
Arm raised to wave at Buck, Bucky grins. His smile is as bright as the sun, another spark of life Buck hasn't seen in months. Maybe years.
Bucky looks so young. Which he can't be because Bucky is older than him, but staring at this Bucky that no one else seems to realize is there that's what crosses Buck's mind. Bucky looks young. He looks happy and untouched by the hell they just went through together.
"Hey Buck!" Bucky's by his side without walking to him. "How was your flight? Ya miss me?"
And he falls into step once more with Buck chattering into his ear. Buck knows he isn't real, knows that Bucky isn't here, but he can't help but accept what little he has left of the other when he has no idea when or if he'll ever see Bucky again.
Because without a body, he has to live as if Bucky is still alive.

OK, before we all move on from X-Men '97, can we please talk about THIS SCENE?
The show's creators didn't need to go this hard on this, but they did. Lock up your daughters, Forge's made dinner!
First of all, there's definitely a fuzzy filter on this. SOMEONE DECIDED TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A 70'S PORNO. IN A CARTOON.
And then there's the close-ups:
THE EYE FUCKING. He's looking straight at her (and sometimes the audience too, hellooo), with an expression that's almost predatorial. It's like he's going to eat her.
(Which he probably did later on. Ahem.)
And look at Ororo:
This isn't the look of a woman reflecting on the future of mutantkind. She is completely under his spell. All soft-eyed and dreamy.
Also, we now know the best way to Ororo's bed heart is through her stomach. All of these guys trying to win her with feats and promises - just feed her!
(FYI, champagne also works. The original Lifedeath told me.)
All of this - the seduction, the sexual tension, even the cooking - is lifted straight from Fall of the Mutants (or, as I like to call it, the Adversary's World of Sex), but once again, the creators didn't have to adapt this aspect of it in a cartoon. This scene is HOT.
I don't know about you, but I'm glad I didn't watch this with actual children, because I wouldn't have been able to explain this scene in a clean way. Kinda like the Danger Room thing with Rogue and Magneto. Did actual children watch this cartoon? Anyway.
My lovely rare pair got a sexy scene. Hehehehe.
THEY SO WANNA DO EACH OTHER LOOK AT THEM. Also Forge is clearly a dirty, dirty man.

perhaps controversial take? but parading meleys' head isn't in itself an absurd or clearly stupid idea imo. it is disrespectful af, it's gross, but it's meant to be a display of strength — the thing is, because of the context and situation as a whole, it misses the inspiring awe and showing strength goal they were aiming for and leaves the smallfolk terrified and desperate instead. the idea a dead dragon's head takes away from the magic and mystique surrounding the royal family seems a little silly to me. everyone knows dragons can die. meraxes was literally killed by people! with weapons! normal humans! ( shoutout to dorne for being the best, anyways) people know dragons can be killed. and in this specific scenario, it can't even be taken as showing people they might kill a dragon, because meleys was killed by another dragon (i think in the show they advertise it as being sunfyre? not sure), not something easily done. might be what the show ends up going for, but i just can't see it as encouragement for people to look at dragons differently

“It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. And you are a good man. we’ve seen all the proof we need.”
listen im not saying orym was saying this but. Dorian leaves home for the first time, shirks his duties and responsibilities and the person that his parents wanted, expected him to be, and there’s guilt there. There’s fear that you’re not enough, that you’re a bad person. that you’re letting everyone down. and he makes friends somehow but he lies to them every day and he puts his foot in his mouth on the regular and he’s doing his best but it’s hard to be a person, he can’t seem to get it right
And then the spider queen talks to you and she offers you deals and you think, maybe I can’t do anything else but I can protect these people with everything I have.
His whole alignment changed (permanently I think)?????? And he loses part of himself for them??! And maybe he never gets it back???? But it’s worth it for his memories, for the chance at enough power to save his friends
and orym tells him to put the crown down, and he’s just looking out for him but it’s also like. Why don’t you trust me to do this? Why am I not good enough?! What if I’m not a good person after all???????
idk. idk where I’m going with this. but like???
