In hindsight, I actually need Mike to be the one who initiates his break up with El. Because she’s had most of the control in their relationship for a while, and narratively speaking, his arc requires him to make an unprompted decision for himself about whether he wants to be with her.

With the miileven-byler love triangle they've literally made it impossible for us to hate any party. Both El and Will are fan favourites for mostly the same reasons, they're just poor, traumatised kids who are actually the sweetest and deserve the world. No one wants to pit them against each other especially now they're siblings and clearly care about each other.

This really subverts most love triangle tropes though because most of the time there is one party the (audience) majority prefer and everyone realistically knows is going to succeed. Most of the time the writers will make one of the potential love interests clearly the least suited or least likable one because they want the audience to agree with the choice in the end. But we love both El and Will, we don't want either hurt or heartbroken so that leaves them with seemingly one option:

Make one of them fall out of love. Basically remove one of them as a love interest at all because then they can't be hurt by not 'getting the guy' in the end. They need to remove themselves from the love triangle.

But who will it be? The boy who selflessly used his own love confession to aid the other relationship? The boy who Mike spent the whole season giving heart eyes to? The boy who's at Mike's side in the final shot of the season? Or the girl who Mike struggled to say he loved until she was on the verge of death? The girl who stopped writing love herself? The girl who hasn't spoken to Mike since his 'confession' and walks past him in the final shot?

How could we possibly know....

Unpopular opinion but a plot (edit: ONLY) involving both Will & Henry in the final season would not be interesting in any way since it would just be El's plot from S4 2.0.

It would also not be really satisfying for Will's supernatural story to conclude in "he had and only has dormant creative powers that's why he was taken by Vecna via The Demogorgon (which would just be SO convenient again but also clash with what was established in S4 & previous seasons in terms of powers... AGAIN), to just reshape the world because Will did so, unknowingly, in 1983". And he chose him because they're similar, blablablablabla... Will would just be another MacGuffin and most of the time passive in his whole story & the conflict once again. 😑

It's so basic & lame that I can tell why so many people in the fandom enjoy it, it's an easy twist and plot to not shake the foundations of the story, characters and the show too much. Just like the Vecna twists. 😒

But it gives enough to the people who want Will to have more importance but were left dissapointed by the way S3 & S4 treated him. Which like okay 🤨... but we could have so much better.

(Edit: At least if it's only done that way because it's the most basic one & the most likely to happen, there's many more interesting ways the two could be involved in a plot together but I'm not too sure The Duffers are able to pull those sort of things anymore.)

WAIT if season 5 is going to follow some of the dynamics of season 1 what if byler don't get Murray-ed but they get Lucas-ed??

In season 1 Lucas is the one to call out Mike for being 'blind because he likes that a girl's not grossed out by him', he's the one to break off from the group to save Will on his own no matter what the others say. It makes sense that he'd be the one to push Mike in that direction again (also the fact Lucas has been the one who has tried to help Mike in his relationship with El the most throughout the seasons so he'd know how none of it came naturally to Mike)

Not to mention in season 5 we're probably going to have Max in a coma for a while with Lucas depressed over it. It would work so perfectly that Lucas snaps after hearing Mike talk about his rocky relationship with El and maybe a bit about Will and just yells at Mike that he's being childish with his emotions because Lucas himself is mourning his real relationship when Mike is still hung up over his pretend one. Also a parallel about how Mike acted when Will was gone in season 1 to how Lucas acts whilst Max is 'gone' in season 5 would also work so well.
