As part of the ratified WGA contract, the people will have access to the numbers that make up the viewership of shows and films in a transparent manner. This is going to be a massive boon for writers and actors wondering about residuals, and will also likely cause mayhem with fandoms and creators when exhibit proof is present of how popular or unpopular their shows and films are.

Fun times are about to be had by all.

Anyone else feeling burnt out by streaming services because any time you start a show the company expects an immediate audience and a fucking worldwide campaign of support or they’ll cancel it.

Hollywood executives will nuke entire shows from existence, then wonder why the people they treated like shit are no longer willing to work for them.
Oh, and they already owned the rights to these shows and movies. It was costing WB and Disney nothing to keep shows like Final Space and Willow on HBO MAX and Disney Plus.

I think now is a good time to remind people of The Internet Archive which has a metric shit ton of shows and movies for free and won't give your computer any viruses cause it's not a pirate website.
Or Tubi, which has a metric shit ton of stuff free with ads, and you don't even have to make an account or download the app. Same with Pluto, although Pluto is pretty slow.
Even YouTube has a lot of free stuff, and I don't just mean the official YouTube movie channel. I mean, there's a bunch of channels that upload movies you can watch without having to click a link to some shady website. YouTube also has a lot of audio book uploads too.
So don't worry about not getting brand new shows because there's so much media out there's that you haven't even consumed yet.

I don't pirate stuff, but this sort of practice undermines ethical arguments against it.

What I don't get about the password-sharing fiasco is....if it was the olden days and you rented a couple DVD/VHS movies, until you brought them back to the shop you could do whatever with them.
You could give them to other people to watch. You could show a movie to a group of ten friends. You had already paid for the tapes, so who was going to care what you did with them in that time?
Similarly, if you have already paid for a Netflix/Max/Dianey+/Paramount+/whatever subscription, you're getting charged monthly for that. The companies have already decided how much it is worth to rent their entire catalogue to you for a month.
So during your "rental period" for these movies and shows, who are they to say what you do with them? If you have someone over for Netflix and chill, they aren't part of your household, so should they not be able to watch a movie you are renting? If you want your friends to see something cool, who cares if they live a town away? That movie is still being paid for, and your "rental" will renew the following month when you pay your bill.
It feels like going to a video store, paying for a bunch of movies, then having to march back to the store with the friend who's going to watch them with you so they can also pay for the movies......while you're still renting them.

The thing people need to get is that it's about more than a queer pirate show.
Art forms are being strangled because of how corporations are allowed to be run. Because the people in positions of power don't give a fuck about creativity, storytelling, or the impact of media on people. It doesn't matter to people like David Zaslav what the companies they're running deal in. They're in it to squeeze out all the money they can and they don't give a shit what gets thrown away in the process. There is no appreciation or respect for what their companies are supposed to be focused on.
Capitalism kills art and it needs to be put on a leash, and these streaming services need a slap in the face. For fuck's sake, there was just a strike over this. The writers weren't going to take the greedy bullshit these companies were serving them, and audiences shouldn't either.

I know everyone's talking about all the horrible HBO MAX decisions, but can we also talk about Disney removing Avatar, a movie that's over a decade old, from their streaming service because they're re-releasing it in theaters? Because, wow, that's bad too

Oh GOD the fiendish David Zaslav is rebooting Harry Potter with a new "extremely faithful" adaption of the seven books. J.K. TERFling is heavily involved, she's executive producing, and they've made a TEN-YEAR COMMITMENT already.
Five Rapid-Fire Thoughts I Had in Reaction to This News:
Fuck Zaslav. (Btw, did I mention that — after deleting half of HBO Max's original content — Zaslav has now announced a price hike to the newly christened "MAX" service? As if giving a shitload of money to the planet's most notable TERF wasn't enough fuckery. FUCK that fucking shitheel.)
See below.

3. All y'all who were like "Boycott Hogwart's Legacy or You're Automatically a Terrible Person" or whatever because Rowling was going to make like a 1% royalty off of that game had GODDAMN BETTER boycott HBO MAX (....uh, sorry, it's just "MAX" now, I keep forgetting bc that name sucks — "HBO MAX" wasn't all that good a name to begin with IMO, but now it's worse) from here on out. YES, I know it's harder to boycott an entire streaming service that may contain OTHER content you want, but c'mon now, just bootleg anything you want off MAX in the future. (I'll help! I will send you a link or whatever if you need assistance. Message me. It's cool.) Because this is going to make her SO MUCH MORE MONEY due to involving her FAR MORE DIRECTLY. FUCK. WHY. Why did they fucking do this.
4. There are so many things in the books that are either A) poorly explained workarounds for continuity/logic issues or B) extremely problematic that the movies were actually BETTER for ignoring them. Can't wait to see the scene where every single known Time-Turner gets accidentally broken shortly after Prisoner of Azkaban in order to ensure the characters can never use time travel to fix their problems again! SUPER excited for the plotline where Hermione has to learn that she's silly and wrong for trying to free slaves because the slaves are fucking happier being enslaved! OH BOY!
5. God, a ten-year production commitment UP FRONT. I hope they lose so much money on this stupid-ass project that they wind up dragging their feet to produce future seasons for so long that the contract runs out before they've gotten farther than like, the third novel, and then it just dies on the vine. Would be HILARIOUS.

Streaming platforms ranked by subtitles:
Dropout: The undisputed champion. Will subtitle sound effects in a fun and engaging way. Subtitle tracks load and close out seamlessly. Being spoiled by the subtitling crew like the pretty little prince that I am. 10/10
Channel 4 iPlayer: If I didn't know there was better out there, you'd be my favourite. 8/10
BBC iPlayer: Not the worst, not the best. Sometimes there is different coloured text when different characters are speaking, but there is no way to turn this on and off and I have trouble reading certain subtitle colors. Occasionally lags, takes a second for the subtitle track to load. 7/10
ITVX: No major complaints. 7/10
UKTV: WHY IS THERE LAG. 6/10
Netflix: These feel like they've become better recently, but it really seems to depend on the media in question. 5/10
Disney Plus: What are you even doing, you absolute clowns? Paraphrasing the dialogue, zero attempt to translate foreign languages, especially when it's pivotal to the plot that the audience know it, and zero attempt to subtitle sound effects. Bonus gripe: a lot of their movies have uncompressed audio so the sound mixing is all over the place and I need subtitles to hear it but the subtitles are fucking trash. 1/10
YouTube Plus/YouTube Red: Certain shows are captioned, others have automatic captions, overall disappointing: 1/10
Amazon Prime: Actively censors swear words. Not the worst thing Jeff Bezos is going to hell for, but certainly on the list. 0/10
Google Play/YouTube Movies: There are no subtitles at all <3 loses by default (No subtitles tracks provided with purchased or rented films, and for some reason there's no ability to turn on the piss-poor automatic closed captioning available with regular YouTube videos. A fucking mess) -1/10
