I know US national politics are very stressful and kind of take up all the news coverage, but I really think that local and state government is way more important to pay attention to.

The city council is where zoning is decided - they can make communities more walkable and do some really great things. They can also plan the city terribly, making traffic worse and causing more accidents.

The school board is where people decide what curriculum should be and where allocated money should be spent and more recently, they're the people getting yelled at about books. They can enact book bans or help prevent them!

In state governments everything from library funding to roads and bridges is budgeted for - which impact your day to day life. The state government is also where bans on trans affirming care and abortion restrictions are happening. But there are also state governments that are going out of their way to protect reproductive rights and trans rights.

The thing is, you decide who is making those decisions. Turn out for city and local elections is abysmally low and a lot of people only vote for higher level state government officials, like governor. The people who are spending your money and deciding your future are people you might not even know exist!

It can be really hard to care about these things - exhausting in fact. But a little goes a long way! You don't have to show up to testify at your state capitol or know the inner workings of your city council, but you can be an informed voter.

Using websites like Vote411.org will help make sure you are registered to vote and give you some information about what will be on your ballot. A quick Google search might help you if you're in a state that has been restricting voting rights. There are organizations out there to help you push through all the bueracracy and exercise your right to vote!

The US government is supposed to be by the people, for the people. And guess what! You're the people!

It may seem naive to talk about the importance of voting right now - a lot of the problems we are facing are huge, existential, even. But big problems don't always get solved by one major action. A lot of the time big problems are solved by small consistent actions that many people take to reach a common goal.

November is coming up and most states will have elections on the 7th (plus early voting!) and I know it's not a big election year and I know it feels a little pointless and maybe you've reached your capacity for caring, but please, please, please, go out and vote!

what i feel like is lacking from conversations about plurality is how genuinely, fundamentally cool it is to be plural. doesnt it fascinate you how our brains can create entirely new selves, inner worlds, inner structures to keep itself afloat? doesnt it make you so curious? especially with regards to atypical plural experiences. i dont hate people for having entire systems full of fragments or fictives or subsystems. in fact, i find it wonderful, a miracle of the mind. you have a complicated inner world with unique lore? incredible, how did that develop? your entire system is full of fictives from the same source? thats amazing, hows that going? your system has entire layers on itself, with several systems running in tandem? wow, thats fascinating, how did you know? you believe you came from different worlds? tell me about them. please, tell me more about yourselves. id love to hear it. i do not fear the potential of the human brain.

The way people talk about pacifists, in media, in fandom, in life can be so damn infantilizing. "How stupid and naive, to say violence isn't the best option." Whole episodes to show that a group of pacifists in the face of danger are dumb, unable to protect themselves, unable to handle violence, needing to be taught that their pacifism is wrong and that violence is the good and best option. Others showing them as passive, on the sidelines. People talk about the right to commit violence, when violence is right, but then there are those scoffing at the idea of a right to not commit violence.

As if being a pacifist is easy. As if committing to those ideals in the face of danger, in the face of one's own rage, is always easy. As if groups of pacifists weren't born of civil wars and raging pain, as if pacifists haven't been committed and dedicated to making the world better. As if they can't be brave, running through storms of bullets to deliver goods to make people's lives easier. As if they haven't been abolitionists, medics, and worked hard to improve things instead of just letting the horrors of the world bowl them over.

but george has never ever condemned his characters for finding and experiencing love outside of doing their duty.

we’re not unfeeling machines that lack emotions. we’re humans who are, more often than not, led by our hearts. and grrm does a phenomenal job when creating characters, as they truly feel human.

so yeah, it’s a bit disappointing that people dumb down what is clearly a very complex situation to “cheating” (btw george himself calls rhaegar and elias relationship complex and he’s never implied that they loved each other in a romantic sense).

to reiterate, i am well aware that highborn women and men are held to different standards, however, if you have a problem with characters working through, around, and sometimes failing to overcome the social structures that cause their suffering, then you must have a major issue with george’s exploration of the human heart in conflict with itself.

george’s characters aren’t robots and that’s what makes them interesting. they do things for very human reasons. they’re biased. they’re traumatized. they’re conflicted. but they’re still reaching for a better tomorrow and they’re still trying to find happiness.

so i’ll never consider rhaegar and lyannas relationship as cheating, or something unsightly that should be scorned. for they simply dared to find and grasp love in a society that would rather shackle them to unhappy marriages, which is very commendable.

oh… and do you know what george does criticize?

he makes it clear that selling women off as broodmares and forcing men into marriages they don’t want is a recipe for disaster.

of course the eventual fallouts of these relationships is super interesting to read about, but you should never ever support the systems in place and the societies that benefit from pushing people/characters into these incredibly unhealthy relationships

so while i find it interesting to read about characters navigating these relationships, i’ll always be the first person to condemn these societies for forcing this fate onto them. i’ll also always be the first person to root for characters who do their best to find happiness outside of their political/arranged marriage
