T. rex Madness Final! Fossil Specimen (Black Beauty: RTMP 81.6.1) vs. Fossil Specimen (Sue FMNH PR 2081)
Tumblr media
Fossil Specimen (Black Beauty: RTMP 81.6.1) – Black Beauty, discovered in 1980, is distinguished both by its striking appearance and by being the first T. rex specimen to receive a nickname. It is on display at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta, Canada and has replica casts around the world.
Tumblr media
Fossil Specimen (Sue FMNH PR 2081) – Arguably the most famous of all T. rex specimens. Discovered in 1990 through impressive luck and observation by the fossil’s namesake, Sue Hendrickson, Sue is also one of the best T. rex fossils, being 90% complete by bulk. Following a lengthy dispute over ownership, Sue was put up for auction, inciting fears that the fossil would end up in a private collection. With the help of various donors, Sue was purchased by the Field Museum in Chicago, and has been a fixture there ever since. Sue’s bones show signs of various injuries, including a parasitic infection in the skull. In 2018, Sue was moved to a new room at the Field Museum, featuring an updated assembly and an informational exhibit featuring the world in which Sue lived.

so i made a quiz a minute back and there was a question about my guinea pigs and a lot of people. followed up on that and wanted to know more lmao. AND if you've been here for even .5 seconds you are aware that i. love talking about my pets so let's get into it
i. Perdita Sue
Tumblr media
name: -- perdita for 101 Dalmations (since she's black and white) -- sue for Sue Hendrickson (a world renowned paleontologist)
fun fact: as stated by the quiz she fucking. loves her water bottle. when she was a baby we were worried she had a blockage in her throat because she kept slamming it back against the wall of the hutch REALLY LOUDLY and her sister didn't do that. so we took her to the vet. nothings wrong. maybe it was just a thing when she was a baby no. no she just really fucking loves her water bottle and likes making it really loud
worst experience: she cut her paw open on a piece of hay when she was about a year and a half old and was bleeding SO FUCKING MUCH i almost missed a class final to stay home with her. she was fine lol
best experience: she likes to shake hands. i have a photo of this somewhere. if you put your hand down in the hutch she'll run over and put both her paws in your palm so you can "shake" them it's the funniest fucking thing
ii. Mei Rosalind
Tumblr media
name: -- mei for my fiancee's middle name lmao (lenora-mei) -- rosalind for Rosalind Franklin (biochemist who discovered the structure of dna)
fun fact: again as in the quiz, she likes sunbeams. a whole fuckin' lot. like, too much. it was about noon and i walked into the room they're in and she was on her back. lil paws in the air. and i thought she was Fucking Dead but no. she was just sunbathing
worst experience: she once sneezed in my mouth and i thought i was gonna die
best experience: when i was studying for my organic chem final she slept on my desk the whole time and just generally kept me from Flipping The Desk and giving up lmao
iii. Meg Helen
Tumblr media
name: -- meg for meg jay (clinical psychologist on adult development) -- helen for. helen keller. bc she's blind
fun fact: the only guinea pig we got from a pet store, who we weren't actually going to get. but she was curled up in the corner of a too small cage and was obviously miserable, so we ended up biting the bullet and adopting her. took her to the vet, vet told us she is The Most Blind Animal she has ever had the pleasure of meeting. take that as you will
worst experience: we got her when she was just a little over a week old and she had to be quarantined from the others. we ended up having to switch off and sit with her at night because she'd cry the whole time and she has the saddest fucking wheek
best experience: she has the croakiest voice of all time. we're pretty sure it's the same genetic inbreeding problems that made her blind, but it doesn't hurt her and it sounds Hilarious. when she finally got out of her quarantine hutch and to her real one (which is 45 feet squared lmao) she didn't stop popcorning and squeaking for fifteen minutes. i cried my fiancee cried i took a video and sent it to my parents and they cried it was a day
iv. Piper Florence
Tumblr media
name: -- piper for the pied piper of war because she's the leader and the others follow after her like she's the. the pied piper -- florence for florence nightingale because again if you've been here for more than .5 seconds you know that i am a. healthcare bitch
fun fact: once jumped out of the hutch and then just stood in the middle of the room because she didn't know where to go. is Best Friends with meg and shows her where everything is in the hutch when we have to change it/replace objects. she does not like sue and ignores her. just doesn't like her there's nothing to be done
worst experience: we thought she had ovarian cancer about a year ago because she was lethargic/sick/swollen etc for a long period of time. tracking her poop what she ate all of that etc etc. turns out that she had a cyst which was still a fucking nightmare, but hey at least it wasn't cancer
best experience: when my fiancée got really sick a few years back piper would just sit on her chest and purr. it was cute and needed and she's fuckin BEEN there man she's basically our dog
anyways that's it. congratulations if you got through it all lmao. i also have four cats (i am. not good at fostering) and a dog so maybe i'll make a post about them idk. ok bye

[ad_1] "Sue," the largest and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered, was found on this day in history, August 12, 1990.While the fossil is named Sue, it is not actually known whether the T. rex was male or female. It was named after Sue Hendrickson, the person who discovered the fossil during a commercial excavation trip.Hendrickson was near Faith, South Dakota, when she spotted "a few large vertebrae jutting out of an eroded bluff," said the website for the Field Museum in Chicago, the fossil's current home.ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, AUGUST 11, 1964, BEATLES' ICONIC FILM ‘A HARD DAY’S NIGHT' IS RELEASED Hendrickson thought there could be additional fossils near the vertebrae — which proved to be correct. "In the end, it took six people 17 days to extract the dinosaur’s bones from the ground where SUE was discovered," said the Field Museum.  Fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson smiles at the unveiling of the Tyranosaurus rex skeleton "Sue" that Hendrickson discovered on Aug. 12, 1990. (JOHN ZICH/AFP via Getty Images)Sue is more than 40 feet long and 13 feet tall at the hip bone, making the skeleton the largest T. rex that has ever been found, said The Field Museum.Additionally, Sue has roughly 90% of the known bones in a T. rex skeleton – 250 out of 380, said the museum.  FIRST-EVER GORGOSAURUS SKELETON SELLS AT AUCTION FOR $6.1M TO UNKNOWN BUYER — SCIENTISTS FRUSTRATED"Sue is the most celebrated representative of T. rex and arguably the most famous fossil in the world," said The Field Museum's website. "Sue has enabled scientists all over the world to do more detailed studies of the species’ evolutionary relationships, biology, growth, and behavior than ever before." houston texans deshaun watson houston texans deshaun watson The Cincinnati Bengals will confront DeShawn Watson and the Cleveland Browns two times in 2022, yet Cincy's blueprint continues as before: win the AFC North. On Monday, previous government judge Sue L. Robinson decided that Browns quarterback DeShawn Watson will be suspended six games for disregarding the association's very own lead strategy. The choice comes following a month of consideration, the NFL actually claims all authority to pursue in three days or less. A few reports this late spring uncovered that the association needed to hit Watson with an endless suspension of no less than one year, which would drive the Browns to begin Jacoby Brissett in 2022. The Bengals took care of the Watson news with a quality of casualness as pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson told journalists "that handles itself" and "assuming [Watson] carries out there we'll design in like manner." Cincinnati will confront the Browns in Week 8 and Week 14, so except if the NFL allures for Watson's suspension to be stretched out to no less than eight games, Joe Burrow and DeShawn Watson will make right two times this year. Watson's 2020 mission was something to observe, yet Watson is two years eliminated from that exhibition and probable won't be a similar world-class signal-guest he used to be. Tunnel, then again, is just moving vertically in the wake of keep a staggering rebound year in 2021 that saw him lead the Bengals to the Super Bowl. Last season, Burrow tossed for 4,611 yards and 34 scores with a 70.4 pass fruition rate, numbers shockingly like those of Watson in 2020. However, Burrow has many different benefits over the disputable Browns QB. For one's purposes, he has previously produced glimmering science with his wide collector corps, and he likewise gets a lift from a retooled hostile line in 2022. Protection could be the game changer in this division competition, and it appears Trey Hendrickson and others are ready to take Watson down when the opportunity arrives. All things considered, the Watson news shows up as just a little blip in Cincinnati's radar — the group has more pressing issues to focus on in the 2022 season. via Blogger https://ift.tt/eQk85Fp August 02, 2022 at 04:49PM

Do you know some cool facts about the T-Rex Sue? I know a little and I love her
Tumblr media
It's Wikipedia entry really is the best source of information about it that I know. I don't honestly know anything about Sue that isn't already in there.
It was named after Sue Hendrickson, who found it basically by a fluke. She found it while doing some exploring as she waited for a flat tire to be fixed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Life sized model of Sue, by the folks from Blue Rhino Studio.
Tyrannosaurus Sue is 90% complete, but fell into possession of fossil profiteers (i don't know if Hendrickson was one them, or if she's a legit paleontologist), and after a long legal battle, was sold at auction for $8 mill. While Sue had a good outcome, other just as remarkable specimens like Tyrannosaurus Stan haven't been so lucky. Stan was claimed by a privet collector and to my knowledge, hasn't been studied or seen since.
Tumblr media
Green highlights are Sue's real bones. It's skull is displayed seperately (source: Wikipedia)
I didn't know when I'd made that one infamous post that they'd decided what they thought was a broken but healed leg bone, was probably actually abnormal bone growth from an infection of some kind.
A big part of why Sue is so beloved in the paleontology community is precisely because it was rescued, and the contrast between Sue and Stan really highlights the evils of fossil profiteering.*
*Buying and selling of fossils isn't necessarily bad. But there are things that are okay, and things that are flat out wrong. There are millions of ammonites, trilobites, and megalodon teeth. The stray unknown dinosaur tooth, claw, or vertebrate isn't going to effect anything (I have a few fossils myself, including a full mosasaur vertebrate, and a spinosaur tooth). But every skeleton (even partial) almost certainly adds something to the puzzle that is that animal. Even if the fossils themselves add nothing new, everything around them can be just as critical, because it tells the story of the environment that animal lived it, which in turn tells us more about it.

Fossil Specimen (Rexy AMNH 5027) – AMNH 5027, colloquially known as “Rexy,” has been a fixture of the American Museum of Natural History for over a century. Rexy was discovered in 1908 by Barnum Brown and was the first specimen to provide a complete skull and neck vertebrae, thus advancing our knowledge of T. rex. Besides its value to science and the museum, this specimen also served as the inspiration for the skeletal T. rex in the Jurassic Park logo, as well as the animated T. rex skeleton in the Night at the Museum series.
