The last episode of TFOE!

Kaoru actually singing live on air!

It was Joe's birthday recently, so Kaoru and Tasai sang Happy Birthday. In reality, it was more like talking the lyrics, but still!! 😂

Kaoru also explained a bit about the music video for The Devil in Me. The members were filmed in front of a green screen, and the background is a mixture of AI and CG, with director Kondo still hard at work on the full video. This approach was decided upon through discussions between the members and Director Kondo. Kaoru said he was thinking about showcasing the full video had it been ready, but alas, it isn't ready yet.

They asked viewers to write questions about the mv in the comments. I asked what the meaning of all the pink was, Joe read this out, and Kaoru answered "Pink". They laughed at this...so did I!

For the main they did a TFOE quiz, with 5 questions about the first ever Niconama broadcast where Kaoru was dressed as Sweeny Todd (Flashbacks to my UK dentist nightmare 😂).

They then read out a few of the comments people had sent in about things they had graduated from. Following this, Kaoru was brought two trays full of prawn/shrimp dishes, since he recently 'graduated' from his dislike of shrimp. He happily tried them all.

To finish the free part, Kaoru mentioned that there are still quite a lot of tickets left for the Osaka dates of the upcoming tour, since this venue is quite large. Get your tickets everyone!!

I have played episode 1 of MCL New Gen. I got uncle Archibald, the nice desk and Amanda's illustration. Here is a summary of the episode.

You start this episode in your room. It is your first day at your new job. You just woke up before your alarm clock. You are a bit nervous about your first day. It is almost time for breakfast. You go downstairs to your mother and sister.

Your mother and sister are at the breakfast table. Your sister doesn't want to go to her dad because she has plans with her friends. Her dad lives too far away to be able to see her friends. She wants to stay here and that you look out for her. But that is not your responsibilities according to your mother. Your mother asks you what you want to drink. You choose a cup of tea. Your mother is going to London. You will have the house to your self in the meantime. Your mother is saving your life. You won't impose for long. Your mother is happy that she can help you. You may stay as long as you need. Your mother severs you some breakfast, you have to start this day good. What are actually your expectations for this job. You want to succeed in your job. Your sister thinks that is a good idea. And you should be able to since your mother pulled some strings. But she didn't, she only gave you the phone number of Devon after he told her that he was looking for someone. You were quickly hired after a 10-minute phone call. Your mother thinks it will work out. Then your sister warns you not to sleep with your boss, especially to not do it when he is married. Your mother is saying that you didn't know that he was married. He hides everything from you. The hole office knew about it and nobody warned you. When you found out, you left town. Your mother start to think about what would have happened if you didn't find out. You told her not to worry about it. Your first focus lies now on the new job. But you are still in your comfortable outfit. You head back up to put on some work clothes. There is only one outfit to choose. You go back downstairs, your pet goose, Taki wishes you good luck. You give your mother and sister a hug, it is time to go to work.

You go outside your house to the bus stop. There you meet your uncle Archibald (he is the fairy in this story). You ask him what he is donging here. He asks you if you remember Agatha. Agatha has asked your uncle to come here. And now, as your mother lives here, your uncle saw that as a sign. He didn't know you would be here two. You are for now living with your mother. You ask your uncle to keep an eye open for a good apartment. In the meantime, he has something for you. You get a worky-worky costume for your pet. You thank him and you go on the bus.

The bus takes you to the center of town. Then someone runs into you. He can't understand how he didn't notice you. It is the same for you when you are running. You get lost in your thought and forget everything around you. The guy has to leave. The same goes for you. You have to go to work. You walk towards the Devenementiel building and ring the bell. But no one opens the door. You ring the bell again, still no one answers. You ring the bell for the third time. Then someone stands behind you. He knows your name. You are about to start today. It is Thomas, he is taking care of the administrative details for your position. He is not happy that he has to be here so early. You are also not a morning person. But it won't take long.

Thomas and you walk inside. He guides you to the most neutral desk. That is where Thomas sits. He pulls up a chair for you. He is the IT and EvDev Technologies manager. Thomas does all the IT stuff. It is almost like he doesn't like paperwork. And indeed he doesn't like it. But all the stuff for you is almost already finished. He found everything online, even a photo for your tag. But the photo is funny, you will get used to it. Thomas is curious what is funny. It is not a standard work photo, it is a bit quirky. But it is a photo of you, and you are looking at the camera, and you are beautiful. You ask if he really thinks so. It was just an observation. But Thomas thinks you have a lot of money with what he found out about you. You have made a few trips and your mother has one of the best architect companies. But it is your mother who is rich, not you. Thomas has seen some of her work. He likes it.  You actually now live with your mother. Then you won't be competing with Amanda. She likes her title of being the rich girl here. But Devon doesn't mind money. If you work good, you will be okay at Devenementiel. The others will arrive soon. You ask if Thomas will show you around. He signs. You hope he introduces you to everyone. You start with the break area. There you see Elenda and Brune. Thomas thinks you will get along with them. Then show you the canteen and takes you to Devon's office. Devon is the boss, he hired you. Thomas leaves the room. Devon seems a lot warmer than he sounds on the phone. Devon will introduce you to everyone at 10 o'clock. Then the phone goes, Devon change back into a serious person.

You leave the room and walk into Amanda. You shake her hand, smiling. Amanda is in charge of accountant and management. She also takes care of art and luxury events. You know a bit about that, maybe you will work together. Devon will decide abut that. Then Roy walks toward you two. He recognizes you from this morning, he was running into you. Roy is happy Devon found a replacement. Hopefully you won't pull the same trick as the other girl did. She is working now for Goldreamz, the competition of Devenementiel. But let's get to work. Amanda and Roy both go to their own desk. You walk towards yours, but there is no chair. Roy let you choose a chair. You choose a cute, comfy desk. It is almost the same as Amanda. You walk back towards the break room. There you see Brune and Elenda again. They have a lot of questions for you. You ask if they could write them down. Brune likes that reaction. Elenda and Brune both think they will like you and get along. They ask where you worked before. You tell them you worked at EMPC. They know the company, it is a very big one. Is that the reason you left. Yes, it was horrible over there. All the people were not really nice. The mood is often worse at big companies. They have to get back to work. You walk towards the meeting room. There is Amanda on her own. She asks if she could help you. You say maybe. You are still trying to find your way. Amanda just came here early to find a minute of peace before the meeting. You suggest leaving, but Amanda is okay. She tells you not to take it too personally with what Roy said earlier about the girl before you. Amanda is curious what your story is. Thomas told her you were rich. Thomas told you the same about Amanda. Amanda doesn't hide it. She comes from a very private family. You don't like to put your life on display. You wanted to be treated the same, even if your mother is rich. You don't have to worry about that here, nobody cares here. It is almost time for the meeting. Amanda tries to order her paperwork, but it falls on the ground. You help her pick up the papers. You get the illustration and a special scene with Amanda. Amanda will blush after you touch hands to pick up the same paper. She doesn't know what got into her. You tell her that this can happen to everyone. To let some papers fall. Normally this doesn't happen to Amanda, it is more due to what is going on. Devon is a bit stressed and that makes Amanda also stressed. You are also stressed because it is your first day. You give all the papers back to Amanda. Then everyone walks into the room. Devon will give a speech to introduce you. He tells everyone to accept you for who you are. To not see you as a replacement, but as a new member of the team. And hopefully this will take the company to a good new path. Everyone applause, and you think you will feel at home here. The episode ends.

So let me get this right.

A trans woman was harassed constantly for a while from what I heard were mostly transphobes and transmisogynists.

Said trans woman and multiple other people reported that harassment to tumblr staff. Tumblr staff proceeds to ignore said reports. Trans woman lashes out at staff as they’ve done nothing to mitigate the harassment she’s facing on their platform.

Tumblr CEO personally gets involved to get her account nuked because she made an obviously non-serious post about wishing that said CEO would die in an exploding hammer car accident.

Tumblr CEO then says that there is no transmisogyny at Tumblr staff because he himself doesn’t think it’s transphobic. He then proceeds to not acknowledge that the trans woman who‘s account he nuked was harassed and that Tumblr staff simply allowed it to happen due to the fact that she was a trans woman. Oh he also either already contacted the FBI & police to investigate said trans woman or threatened to despite what she said not being an actual death threat in the slightest.

The trans woman‘s backup account get‘s nuked as well despite Tumblr staff never really banning alt accounts for trolls or harassers showing a clear double standard again and showing that this seems to be a personal thing for the CEO.

CEO then continued having a meltdown talking about how good and trans-inclusive the totally not transmisogynistic staff members are and how some of them are trans themselves while continuing to not address the actual issue at all.

CEO then says nighty night while still having not addressed the actual issue at hand.

I think I got most of that right but I haven’t known of Predstrogen before this drama so most of the info is not from direct sources (except the CEO meltdown he did that all *very* publicly). If I‘m wrong on any point here please correct me.

BSD Chapter 108

In the narrow room - Part 4

Finally a longer chapter, and it was such a roller coaster!!! Now I don't know what is true anymore and I can't wait to see what will happen next.

Please note that neither my English nor Japanese is perfect. Please let me know if you find any mistake!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Sigma shows the piece of paper he picked up earler (that has the word "Help!" written in Russian) to Fyodor and asks him if he is the one who wrote it. Upon seeing the piece of paper, Fyodor has a breakdown. He starts screaming and keeps saying "Help me! Help me" in Russian. When he finally calms down, his experession changes and he looks like another person. He asks Sigma what year it is.

Atsushi is fighting Akutagawa. He keeps calling to Akutagawa, saying that he knows Akutagawa is still there. Because he didn't kill Aya, and Atsushi knows that it is because of their promise. He tells Akutagawa that the 6-month limit has not been over yet so it is not yet time for them to fight each other. Akutagawa doesn't seem to listen and keep fighting him, forcing Atsushi to launch a counter attack. But when he is about to his Akutagawa's face, he stops himself because he thinks he is gonna kill Aku with the tiger strength if he is not protected by Rashomon. Akutagawa takes the chance and catches Atsushi by his arm and leg by rashomon.

Atsushi shouts to Akutagawa to wake up, reminding him that he wants to become stronger. He says that the real strength is not when you compare it with each other, but it is the strength to face with your own self, and that is the "real strength" that Dazai is looking for. Upon hearing that, Akutagawa has some reaction, and Atsushi thought it has worked. However, Akutagawa goes a head and rips Atsushi's arm and leg off. (Bram is seen watching that while saying 'He is not that naive')

Back to Sigma and Fyodor, the "new" Fyodor tells Sigma that the Fyodor that Sigma knows is the bad guy, and that he can not stop "him". But he can see hope in Sigma so he takes out a knife and asks Sigma to take it. He says it is the "Sword Kladenets", and it may look like a normal dagger, but it is similar to the holy swords and is the only thing that can kill "the one that is his ability". He holds it out to Sigma while saying sorry because the bad Fyodor is the one born out of his weakenesses, and that he has let his own abiliity take over him.

Sigma lowers the knife bun and reaches out to take the dagger, but when he gets closer, Fyodor turns back and stab him with the same knife, saying 'Just kidding'. Fyodor then tells Sigma that it is just an act to get Sigma to lower the knife. And that multi personality act is so cliche, but it can make people lower their guard, and that the dagger is no more than a normal life he took from the guard.

Fyodor asks Sigma if it is painful. Because if he becomes an agency member, that pain will keep coming to him as the agency is Fyodor's enemy. He then asks Sigma if he still wants to become a member of ADA despite all of that. Sigma tries to get his gun back but his move is all read by Fyodor. Fyodor then tells Sigma that now that he knows how determined Sigma is, he will let Sigma touch him and read whatever he wants to read, if Sigma has that courage to do so.

Fukuchi is on the call with the Secretary in the government, who has no option now but to tell him how to unlock One Order. The Secretary questions Fukuchi about his action, and tells Fukuchi that he will have to throw away all the Fukuchi fan merchs he has at home now (TN: Sorry it is so funny I have to include it xDD). Fukuchi tells him to just do that and finally opens One Order.

Aya and Bram sees a bright light from the tower when One Order is unlocked and Bram says there is just secondds until the world burns.

For a summary of my 2023, read on!

2023 was a very productive art year as I went full-time in February. It started out with lots of fantasy items in color for seizekingsgames

I went to two comic conventions! The first was in Malmö tabling together with @mkllpz then Göteborg. Here's a picture of me in Göteborg wearing a jumper my girlfriend knitted(!!):

I made two books! One is a collection of my fantasy item drawings and the other is a collection of short comics and knight drawings. https://ko-fi.com/oscarwestberg

I've done other client work as well, such as for ZdravkoMinchev 's "FALSE PROPHET", chrisbodegard 's "Esoteric Ebb" and also a bunch of artwork for an unannounced game.

I've worked on my next big book which is a fantasy journal of sorts. My plan is to make it about 80 pages long, 20 or so done so far. Characters + their stats, items and story.

Lots of really fun commissions throughout the year!

Can't say it's been easy financially to go full-time but it's been getting better and better. Looking forward to a great 2024!

Everything so far about the season 9 Egg War

(in case anyone wants this lol)

Grian steals The dragon egg from Pearl, dupes it, and returns it. (This will be important later)

Grian and Scar accidentally blow up Doc's tunnel bore as a way to procrastinate from finishing the back of Grian's base.

They make an apology pile with many gifts including diamonds, Scarland merch, and a dragon egg.

Doc retaliates by doing funky chunk repressor stuff to make Grian's nether portal one block and puts a load of wither skull projectiles in Scarland's sky.

Zedaph wants one of Grian's duped eggs for the Hall of All, and completes an egg quest Grian sent him on to get it. Part of the quest was blowing up a small section of Doc's base. (Without fixing it afterwards.)

Doc retaliates by making Grian blow up Mumbo's vault door in order to get a purple crown. (Which Grian wants because he claims it will make him "Mumbo's best friend.")

Grian leaves a sign saying he does not know how to "physically, emotionally, or spiritually fix this."

Mumbo pays Scar 64 diamonds to blow up a large part of his base because he didn't like it anymore. He then makes Grian think that it blew up along with the vault door, therefore making it Grian's fault. That causes Grian to burn (what they think is?) the one and only purple crown so far due to guilt.

Grian and Scar retaliate by creating a machine to fill Doc's perimeter with chickens. However, due to the Scar and Grian are banned sign in the perimeter, they go as their alter egos Poultry Man and Hotguy.

Doc cleans up the chickens with the help of Ren (who pledges his alliance to him), Zedaph (who he seems to be a bit on the fence about since he didn't fix his base), and some foxes.

Doc leads a bunch of the chickens Grian and Scar made into Grian's base. (With Zedaph's help.)

Grian, Scar, and Mumbo form the Buttercup alliance against Doc, because, according to Grian's research, buttercups are toxic to goats.

The Buttercup alliance makes a cute little tent area in the middle of Doc's path, raise a sniffer called "Xx_GoAtEaTeR_xX", and build their eyes overlooking the perimeter so Doc knows "they're always watching." (They also discover that falling blocks make Grian's game crash.)

The buttercups learn that Doc has a robot (the Goat Walker) that faces the path. They decide to build (let Mumbo build) a robot to fight it in a cool mech battle thing.

Doc uses the dragon egg Grian had given him as an apology to dupe a bunch more, then build an insane egg duping machine that makes a whole lotta dragon eggs.

Doc and Ren put these eggs in Scarland, Grian's base, the bridge connecting Grian's and Mumbo's bases, and Mumbo's vault. Ren encourages Doc to also put them inside Scarland's castle. (With loads of shulker boxes to spare.)

Pearl, as the server's resident cleaner lady, gets hired by Scar for a salary of 32 diamonds a week to clean up all the eggs in Scarland. (He also kind of throws Grian under the bus concerning the illegal eggs and logs off when asked to give her his stock of eggs.)

Doc calls Pearl to snitch- AhEm I mean inform Pearl of his neighbors' messiness. From him she learns that Grian's base also has eggs in it, that Doc was the one that duped all these eggs, Ren was the one to put them in the bases (although he did too), and that he had thought Grian had the original egg. (He also gives her almost two barrels full of shulker boxes full of dragon eggs. He does not tell her about the machine or the eggs still in it that he could easily use to make more.)

Pearl says something about Grian facing the cleaning lady's wrath idk i think she's gonna end up entering this whole fiasco too lol

Doc builds two butterflies flying above the perimeter in order to "kill them with kindness." The one facing directly towards Scarland is for him, and the one facing directly towards Grian's base is for Ren.

The butterflies are actually tnt-duping flying machines.

Doc tells Ren about and shows him the butterflies. Ren (apparently) thinks they are just flying machines, and Doc does not tell him about the tnt. (Doc's pov only)

Doc and Ren discover a beacon in the perimeter and that someone had been mining there. They conclude no one respects the Goat anymore, and Doc determines to find out who it was. (Idk if this is gonna be relevant but I've added it just in case.)

Ren tells Doc about his super awesome spy plans, which involves the cave right under the Buttercups's camp. (It's not elaborated on very much in Doc's episode.)

BSD Chapter 106.5

"In the Narrow Room" - Part 2.2

This chapter is the continuation of Mersault with Dazai and Sigma.

I love this chapter!!! But at the same time I'm so shocked I have no words T_T Hands shaking just typing this out so please forgive me if I make any mistake (I don't speak English nor Japanese as my native language)

SPOILERS AHEAD

Sigma tries to get out of the water to get some air but the water is burning so he has to dive back in. Apparently the fuel coming from the wall is Fyodor's doing. Dazai tells Sigma to use his gun to shoot the door but it is too hard the bullets do not work. Sigma is almost out of breath when he notices the fire has stopped and believes that the fuel has burned out so he tries to swim to the surface but before he can get out of water, he is pulled back down by Dazai.

At first Sigma thinks Dazai is trying to kill him. He blames himself for being too naive to think that he could trust Dazai, before after all, Dazai is just like Fyodor - someone from *that side*. But as they get closer in the water, he realizes Dazai is just trying to stop him from doing a sucidal act - that he only came to understand later. Basically, the fire has burnt up all the oxygen left in that narrow space, that's why there is no oxygen left in the air above water. If one inhales that air, their blood will lose oxygen instead and it can lead to immediate death. This is also a part of Fyodor's evil plan.

When Sigma is already at his limit, Dazai grabs the gun, puts his hand out of the water and shoots the electric box (?) of the elevator. He uses Sigma as a step to jump out of the water, into the non-oxygen room, shoots something inside the electric box and inserts his arm into it. After that, the door starts to slighly open and Sigma uses all his strength to force it open, letting the water out. Sigma realizes that what Dazai destroyed is the wire that control the opening and closing of the elevator door. It is not as strong as the door itself and can be broken by force. Dazai somehow saw through this structure and was able to stick his hand through the weak part of the devices to destroy the wires. However, Sigma stilll doesn't understand how Dazai was able to find those wires.

Sigma finally gets out of the water. He is able to breath normally, so he turns to Dazai, looking happy. Dazai also smiles back at him, but then they hears the automated voice inside the elevator, saying that since the water operation has failed, the safety device for the elevator will be purged and it will proceed to free fall. Right after that, the elevator starts to drop. Sigma reaches for the opening in the door, thinking that he has to escape from there before the elevator fully accelerates, but it is too far from him and he thinks he's going to die. Dazai smiles and tells him that he promised he would return Sigma alive, then he uses his whole body to push Sigma out of that door to safety, while he is still inside. Before disappearing from side, he tells Sigma that he leaves the rest to him.

Thank you for reading till the end. I personally believe Dazai will still survive, but his selfless act in this chapter just makes me wanna cry...

Kip Kinkel: Thurston High School

Summary of the 1998 Thurston High School Shooting committed by Kip Kinkel. Note: this is for informational and educational purposes only. Post is below the cut. 

Background: 

Kipland Philip Kinkel was born August 30th, 1982 to Bill and Faith Kinkel. He had one older sister, Kristin, who was about six years older than him. The family lived in Springfield, Oregon; Bill previously taught Spanish at Thurston High School and Lane Community College, and Faith was a Spanish teacher at Springfield High. Kip was described as a relatively normal teenager with some odd hobbies and interests. He was on the football team and enjoyed the music of Marilyn Manson and Nirvana. He was also known for being “obsessed” with bombs and guns; this fixation would only grow over time.

The Kinkel family did not seem to have any major conflicts. Kristin was a successful competitive cheerleader in college, and Bill and Faith were both popular teachers. However, Kip had some academic struggles. It was recommended that he repeat the first grade, and he was later diagnosed with dyslexia. Despite having difficulty in some academic areas, Kip thrived in science and math; in fact, he was placed in a “Gifted” program.

Mental Health / Warning Signs

Kip’s behavior began to change as he became a teenager. He was twelve years old when he began hearing voices in his head. The first time it happened, he was walking home from school; according to Kip, a male voice told him, “You need to kill everyone, everyone in the world.” When he could not find the source of the voice, he panicked. He ran to his house, grabbed the rifle he received for his birthday, and hid in his bedroom until he did not hear the voice. Soon, one voice developed into two, and then three. These voices were all male voices and would talk to each other: either to fight or to work together to manipulate Kip. These voices terrified him, and he tried to make sense of them. However, his conclusions were all based in paranoia.

“I believed that the Disney corporation was working in conjunction with the U.S. government, and they had planted a chip in my head and so the voices were coming from this chip,” - Kip Kinkel (2021)

This paranoia developed rapidly, but he went to great lengths to hide it from others. He began believing that foreign countries would invade and kill him. These fears led him to have an increased interest in weapons.

 In seventh grade, he expressed an interest in building bombs and tried to obtain books such as the Anarchist’s Cookbook. He obtained a shotgun from a friend during this time as well. Faith Kinkel discovered his plans to obtain weapon-related books and grew concerned. Despite knowing about Kip’s violent interests, she did not intervene. It wasn’t until Kip started getting into legal trouble that some action was taken. In eighth grade, Kinkel and his friends were caught shoplifting CDs at the local Target. Sometime after this incident, Kip and a friend were arrested in Bend, Oregon for hitting a car with a rock from a highway overpass. These incidents led to Kip being brought to a psychologist. Kip intended to keep the voices and delusions he was having a secret. Dr. Jeffrey Hick would see Kip for nine therapy sessions and noted that he showed “no evidence of delusional thinking or other thought disorder symptoms.” It was apparent that he had a strained relationship with his parents, especially after his sister (who acted as a mediator for the family) had moved out. Kip described eating and daily functioning as a chore. He was eventually diagnosed with depression and prescribed Prozac.

“I remember freaking out. I had this plan, and this is a mess, but I had this plan to get into the military because if I got in the military, then I could get into the CIA, and if I got in the CIA, then I could get the right connects to find whoever in the government that put this chip in my brain. And being diagnosed as depressed..  this was something the voices pushed.. meant that I would not be allowed into the military. And I would not be allowed to own guns.” - Kip Kinkel (2021)

During the time of these counseling sessions (January 20th - July 30th 1997), Kip was suspended twice in late April. Despite this, he was seemingly progressing well in counseling; it seemed that Kip’s depression and anger were under control. Because of this, his father allowed him to purchase a 9mm Glock with his own money (under the agreement he would not be able to use it without his father’s supervision). In an attempt to bond, Kip and his father would go target shooting. Soon after, Kip purchased more guns: a .22 pistol from a friend (which he kept hidden) and a .22 semiautomatic rifle that his father allowed him to purchase. Kip’s obsession with explosives grew just as his obsession with guns did. In class, he gave a descriptive speech about the process of building pipe bombs with detailed illustrations.

Expulsion:

On May 20th, 1998, Kip was going to purchase another gun, a .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol, from a friend; they arranged the day before for Kip to purchase it at school. Kip paid $110 for the gun and kept it in his locker. However, this gun was stolen from the friend’s father. The father contacted the school, concerned that one of his guns was taken by one of his son’s friends. A list of possible suspects was given to Detective Warthen, but Kip’s name was not listed. After speaking to other students, Warthen questioned Kip about the gun. He confessed and was arrested, along with the friend he purchased the gun from. According to Detective Warthen, Kip was extremely worried about what his parents would think of him being charged with a felony. Bill Kinkel drove Kip home from the police station. They stopped at Burger King; Bill left Kip inside the building while he ate in the car. Kip felt as though his fears had become a reality.

“It was no longer, ‘I need to get this gun to protect myself from these very specific threats.’ Everything was a threat, everything was evil, everything was ugly, I got to the point where there was a mantra that the voices were saying, but also that I was experiencing, which was that I had to commit the crimes that I committed. The sense that I had no other choice was overwhelming. It became my reality.” - Kip Kinkel (2021)

Shooting: 

According to Kip, the voices in his head continued to get louder and more unbearable. The voices he was hearing were telling him to kill his father. Around 3pm on the same day as his expulsion, Kip grabbed his .22 rifle and shot his father in the back of the head while he was drinking coffee in the kitchen. Kip dragged the body of his father to the bathroom and covered him with a sheet. Between 3pm and 6:30pm, Kip’s home phone received numerous calls: a call from an English teacher at Thurston High School looking to speak to Bill, a call from a friend of Kip asking about Bill, and a call from one of Bill’s Spanish students asking about his absence. Kip gave vague, short answers to these calls before hanging up. The final call was between Kip and two of his friends. During this call, Kip explains that he did not know that the gun was stolen, and that he had no plans to use it. According to the friends on this call, he was impatiently waiting for his mother to come home and stated that “It's over...Everything's over... it's done... Nothing matters now."

Around 6:30pm, Faith Kinkel was in the garage, getting out of her car. Kip entered the garage, told her that he loved her before shooting her twice in the back of the head, three times in the face, and once in the chest. Kip covered her body with a sheet. That night, the voices convinced him that more people needed to die.

“I know it’s really hard for people to accept and understand, but there was something very clear inside me... like suicide wasn’t an option for me until I had done this thing that they were telling me to do. And they had promised me that once I did this thing I could kill myself.” - Kip Kinkel (2021)

The following morning, May 21st, 1998, Kip dressed himself in a black trench coat and packed his .22 caliber semiautomatic rifle, the 9mm Glock, and .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol into his backpack, along with ammunition. He taped a bullet to his chest (an extra bullet to kill himself, in case he ran out of ammunition) and a hunting knife to his leg. He drove himself to Thurston High School in his mother’s Ford Explorer.

Kip parked a block away from the school and walked through the back parking lot to enter the school. In a hallway near the school’s cafeteria, Kip shot two boys, Ben Walker and Ryan Attebury with the rifle; Walker being shot in the face and Attebury on the side of his face. He continued down the hallway to the cafeteria, where he shot the remainder of the 50-round clip. Determined to keep shooting, Kip tried to use his Glock, but he was tackled by five students after one shot. Two students were killed: Ben Walker and Mikael Nickolauson. Ryan Attebury, along with 24 others, survived their injuries. As Kip was arrested, he stated he just wanted to die or be killed. 

At the police station, Kip spoke to Detective Al Warthen. He was questioned about the moments leading up to the shooting, and Kip confessed to the murder of his parents. (Most of this recorded confession can be found online). Warthen left the room momentarily, and Kip managed to grab the knife he had taped to his leg. When Warthen returned, Kip yelled at Warthen to kill him before approaching him with the knife. Warthen escaped the room and locked Kip inside; He and another officer sprayed pepper spray into the room in an attempt to disarm Kip. 

As detectives entered the Kinkel’s house, “Liebestod”, a song featured on the CD soundtrack of Romeo + Juliet, could be heard on repeat at a blasting volume. Upon entering the house, detectives found explosives in crawl spaces, the bodies of Bill and Faith, and a note confessing the murder of the Kinkel parents.

“I have just killed my parents! I don't know what is happening. I love my mom and dad so much. I just got two felonies on my record. My parents can't take that! It would destroy them. The embarrassment would be too much for them. They couldn't live with themselves. I'm so sorry. I am a horrible son. I wish I had been aborted. I destroy everything I touch. I can't eat. I can't sleep. I didn't deserve them. They were wonderful people. It's not their fault or the fault of any person, organization, or television show. My head just doesn't work right. God damn these VOICES inside my head. I want to die. I want to be gone. But I have to kill people. I don't know why. I am so sorry! Why did God do this to me. I have never been happy. I wish I was happy. I wish I made my mother proud. I am nothing! I tried so hard to find happiness. But you know me I hate everything. I have no other choice. What have I become? I am so sorry“ - Kip Kinkel’s written confession

Trial:

On June 16th, 1998, Kip Kinkel was indicted with 58 felony charges, including four counts of aggravated murder that he was originally charged with. Kip spent approximately 18 months in solitary confinement. He was kept in a juvenile detention center until being transferred to an adult county jail after his 16th birthday. Kip was evaluated by different doctors that came to the shared conclusion that he showed signs of paranoid schizophrenia. Due to his age, he was not given a formal diagnosis and was only given medication for a brief period of time. During his confinement, the voices only gained more control over Kip. 

Just days before the trial, Kip decided to plead guilty instead of going forward with an insanity defense. He felt that a mental institution would be just as bad as prison, and he wanted to avoid a stressful trial in hopes that the voices would not bother him more than they already were. 

During the sentencing, survivors, family members of the victims, and doctors testified. Many called for the harshest sentence possible. When Kristin Kinkel tried to console her brother and block out the anger surrounding him, he allegedly said, “No, I owe it to them to listen.” Kip’s defense team attempted to get a lighter sentence due to his age and mental instability. However, the notoriety of the case led to Kip receiving the harshest sentence for a juvenile. On November 2nd, 1999, Kip Kinkel was sentenced to 111-years in prison without the possibility of parole. He apologized to the survivors and families of the victims.

Appeals / Recent News:

Kip and his legal team have made multiple attempts to appeal his sentence, with no success. However, Kip has made significant progress in his life in prison. He earned his degree in global studies in 2007 and has worked as a clerk in the prison library, a yoga instructor and an electrician. Kip’s mental health has improved with the help of proper medication and therapy. He continues to advocate for criminal justice reform today. In the summer of 2021, Kip Kinkel gave his first and only interview for an article by HuffPost.
