because that was what jack did when he played paddy. dónal finn's eoin will never break eye contact, will keep looking at paddy fondly, like paddy is his moon and his sky. in every. fucking. scene, when he speaks to paddy. meanwhile, paddy will sometimes take a glance at eoin, but he never holds his gaze for long. he always looks away every few split seconds, as if he's afraid that he will be known.

'i'm hardly known to myself', he says to eoin, when they were playing chess in s1 ep2. in a way, i think he does know himself. i think he's scared of admitting it. he's afraid that if he shares a gaze with eoin a tad too long, eoin will see right through him, that he'll get caught.
