also I do mean it when I say Yellowjackets is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched in my life but anyway back to criticizing it I think the issues with the writing of nonwhite characters goes deeper than anyone wants to admit. when you see the juxtaposition of jeff & shawna’s complex dynamic marred by her cannibal & murderer tendencies versus taissa & simone it’s… glaring. with jeff & shauna you’re still getting the impression of - well - a goddamn marriage with history & complexities & nuance.

I’ve already pretty consistently & harshly (I think rightly) criticized how simone (a rare dark skinned character on the show) is written as a 1 dimensional hag but I want to emphasize how much this hurts taissa. with shauna - we get her & we get jeff & we understand where each character is coming from, creating a compelling & complex dynamic as they cope with the fact that shauna murdered adam martin.

what do we get with taissa & simone? simone sees the dead dog & flips & instantly threatens to go to the press. no buildup, no understanding of who simone is or why we should care - nothing.

now I’m not saying that simone - like jeff - should be the #supportivespouse. no one is saying that. I’m just saying that it hurts taissa’s characterization & it hurts the nuance of the story as a whole when simone is nothing but a potential threat to taissa & the yellowjackets & their reputations over a dead dog when jeff is allowed to be a complex character when it comes to his reaction over a dead human.

taissa & simone are married for god’s sake. they have a child together. simone’s no nuance instant “I’m taking sammy & going to the press” response to the dead dog is just bad writing & im calling it out. give us more of her struggle & what the relationship means versus her principles if you’re gonna do that! taissa deserves to have rich supporting characters in her life just like everyone else in the main cast has complex lives that get to be explored. it’s not fair to taissa to write such a bland & no nuance spouse for her!

and yeah I’m not gonna pretend that the blatant lack of complexity given to the dark skinned lesbian spouse verses the white male spouse isn’t - well - blatant. sorry if I was supposed to
