Suzuki Cappuccino :) or other baby roadsters

Oh, I had a post in the chamber about exactly that! :D

So, Japan is pretty densely populated. Let's put it this way: one reason the Tokyo metro area couldn't do a huge and extremely weird cultural exchange where every citizen trades place with someone from Australia, Belgium or Slovenia, is there aren't enough Australians, Belgians and Slovenians combined to do that. So you can imagine it would be pretty advantageous to public life for people to drive small cars - hence the popularity of kei cars, a car class with huge tax benefits and tiny engine and dimensions limits. Those limits, positively minuscule when they were introduced to push bike makers to use their parts to make small cars, eventually increased to a 0.66L engine size and the dimensions below...

...and in the late 80s there was a "gentleman's agreement" whereby no one would make a kei car more powerful than 64hp, similar to the other gentleman's agreement whereby they agreed not to make cars with more than 276hp - which they cleverly addressed by equipping more powerful cars, like the Skyline GT-Rs, with unusual little devices called lies.

But now it's the 1990s -contrary to popular misconceptions- and Japanese businesses and customers have a problem: what the fuck do we do with all this money?

To truly convey the desperation with which cash was being thrown around like primate feces, Mazda created FIVE sub-brands (Amati, Autozam, ɛ̃fini, Xedos, and Eunos, brand under which they sold the Miata as Eunos Roadster) AND gave the SIXTH sub-brand M2 separate headquarters - these headquarters. In Tokyo.

M2 only ever made parts and some fringe prototypes, the most it produced were three Eunos Roadster-based limited versions - they cost twice as much as the original (and for good reason - one of them used leather deemed too expensive by the only other automaker to ever use it, Rolls Royce), but because economic bubble, they were so sought after they had to set up a lottery, Andrea was telling us, and as he got to the uber-limited production numbers (a combined 780), he explained that, since of course they were only sold in Japan, there were only five in the whole of Europe. He then raised his finger and, in one of the greatest flexes I have ever witnessed, pointed it around his huge, Miata-packed shed, counting "one, two, three, four, five".

S'yah, it turns out the world's biggest Miata collection is just owned by Some Guy in the middle of Italy, and if your kid ever gets dumped it is a wonderful place to take him to cheer him back up. Thanks, dad.

So clearly, this was a point in time where even people with no need nor wish nor space for a large second car, or a large car at all, could still be interested in a sportscar, thus spawning some briefly-lived but oh-so-brightly-burning kei sportscars, nicknamed ABC.

One of them being, indeed, the Suzuki Cappuccino.

Please remember, this car is positively lilliputian. It's 3.30m long. For the yankees in the audience, that's just 0.03 football fields. Here are some fun size comparisons.

The engine was front-mid and turbocharged...

...the roof was a fun puzzle that allowed you to have a T-Top coupe (with just the sides off), a targa (with the top part of the roof removed but the rear pillar of the roof still in place) or a spider (by folding the rear pillar and window down)...

...and it was NOT exclusive to Japan, with 12% of units being sold in the UK!

But since this was clearly asked by someone quite familiar with its generalities, some less-known quirks for the geeks:

It was the first kei car ever with double wishbones all around

The indicators changed between JDM and UK versions so if you've got the latter finding spares is 10 times harder

The hood release is in the glovebox and the fuel release is in the center console storage - the latter locks with a different key than the ignition uses, so if you hand just the latter to the valet you can keep them from siphoning your gas, but I'm yet to hear whether that also goes for the glovebox, so stay tuned for updates on whether you can also keep them from siphoning your washer fluid

Air gets to the engine (well, to the turbo) through the frame. Like, it gets into the frame, it travels inside the frame, and then gets out and is filtered. Now, you may ask yourself why they would do that.

While most cars had front disc brakes at the time, the less effective but cheaper drum brakes were usually used on the rear, which was fine since when a car brakes weight transfers to the front so the front wheels are the ones that get more grip and can thus brake harder anyway - so not only do you not need the rear wheels to have the same stopping power, you don't even want them to, because then the rear wheels would lock up before the front ones even got to their full braking potential. So when the Cappuccino got four wheel disc brakes, like every other car with four wheel disc brakes, it didn't put four discs of the same size all around. Unlike every other car with four wheel disc brakes, however, they put the bigger ones at the rear. A friend who owns one called the brakes "not amazing".

Then again, let's cut them some slack, it was the second kei car ever with four wheel disc brakes! Second, yes, because the Cappuccino was not the first kei-sized sportscar.

So, remember how with Ferrari, the last car to be signed off by its founder was a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive, manual, record-setting, no frills two-seater sportscar? Well, the Japanese being famous overachievers, that goes for Soichiro Honda's last two.

Supposedly, Honda decided that its F1 engines hadn't kicked Ferrari's ass enough, so they set out to build a car as approachable, reliable and daily-life-friendly as a Honda yet faster through both straights and corners than a Ferrari. Or a Lamborghini. Or a Porsche- you get the idea. Thus, the NSX, seen here next to it is its test driver, tuning consultant and enthusiastic owner Ayrton Senna, best known for driving the car on the left into three championship wins, a bunch of "Greatest Of All Time" debates, and a wall that killed him.

But if your second-to-last car is a two seat, mid-engined, rear wheel drive sportscar with Pininfarina design, a 40mm short-throw manual, and a redline past 8000RPM, what do you do for your last one? Easy! Another!

This little bowl of pint-sized cuteness is the Honda Beat, and yes, that interior is not just factory, but was the only pattern available. Still, if you think the interior is the most outlandish part of this car, you haven't heard it.

Again, this engine was outsized by two Coke cans and the car it's in is no bigger than the Cappuccino, and you already know how... ah, screw it, let's show you a size comparison anyway.

Some geek facts:

It was the first mid-engine monocoque (as in not body-on-frame, not un-shark-like, you pervs) spider ever made! There were some targas before, but never a full-on spider

The stereo was custom to fit in the super-narrow center console between the two asymmetrical cabin spaces so the cassette slot has the same cute little Beat logo as the "Open Air Motoring!" branded floormats!

Gathers celebrated its 20th anniversary with a new touchscreen radio for it that is now uber-rare and uber-expensive

It had two trunks, which is lovely, except that the rear one had the battery and optional CD changer conspiring against you and the front was literally inside the spare tire, so it's good that you could also get a rear rack!

The rear rims are bigger than the front!

With how much cooler this is than the Cappuccino (sorry, friend who owns one) it's quite the shame Suzuki decided not to go forward with the mid-engine layout their kei sportscar development started with. At least, Mazda sure thought as much, asking Suzuki to please keep working on that idea and make a mid-engined kei sportscar for them to sell under their brand for the youth, Autozam. And thus we have the ABC - C for Cappuccino, B for Beat...

...and A for AZ-1. Think of how cool life was in Japan back in the day that this was a car for the youth.

Sadly, it joined the party (JapaneseEconomicBoomfest, that is) just when it was ending. Hell, the Beat was sold for six years ('91 through '96) and two thirds of Beats sold are 1991s. That's how hard recession hit Japan right when the AZ-1 came out, which indeed sold a fraction of the other two.

But fear not: after decades, Honda blew the dust off the kei sportscar idea in 2015 with the gloriously sexy S660.

It did cease production last year, but at least it left the Japanese used market a kei sportscar with the modern amenities we (and by we I mean you spoiled pussies) cannot do without, like steering wheel controls and *squints* HDMI.

Oh by the way, remember how I said I was going to post about the Cappuccino? Well, it was because someone posted a picture of one with aftermarket taillights.

Guess what car was next to it when this picture was taken. Guess.

WRONG.

I wonder how many of you would have voted "smash" for the Rock before last week. Like, just how much good will was erased in an instant? So far, events have interfered with poll results twice in the three months of this blog's existence (three months of the most insane wrestling news in the history of pro wrestling, tbh), and I'm contemplating running those polls again in a year or so if requests get slow and the events are behind us.

Our collective father Christian Cage has taken the top spot for total votes, with 582 people casting votes. He is No. 34 overall in terms of smashability by percent, but just due to the sheer number of votes cast, he received more smash votes (447) than anyone else. Like, the only people to receive more TOTAL votes than that are Punk (527), Hook (449), and Hangman (447). I was really hoping he'd pass the 600 vote mark, but not today.

Sami Zayn also joined the "Whole Lotta Votes" club with 435, putting him at No. 7 overall.

No van ser els mals hàbits del pastisser el que el van portar a perdre la pastisseria. Tota la gent del carrer Grassot apreciava al Joel, o si més no la seva reposteria. Per la festa major del barri, amb l’ajuda de la dona i les dues filles, preparava centenars de crosants que repartia entre tota la mainada, i també entre els pares i mares d’esperit lleuger. A partir de les vuit del vespre, xapada la pastisseria, al Joel se’l podia veure caminant carrer avall. A aquella hora solia creuar amb el petit Toni, de cal Perelló, que anava cap a classe de piano. Aquell nen era probablement l'únic en tot el carrer que no entrava mai a la pastisseria. Mirava amb desconfiança al Joel, la qual cosa l’irritava. El petit Toni, menut, pur, infant, era l’únic ésser prou sensible com per penetrar en la greixosa façana del farsant i desxifrar els tèrbols colors amb què el Joel pintava els seus pensaments. Aquest doble reconeixement entre dos éssers tan antagònics creava una tensió rica, única i personalitzada, tan natural com l'odi que es professen un gat i un gos. Es fotien fàstic i per això optaven per conviure en silenci i distància. En qualsevol cas, tot quedava oblidat un parell de carrers més avall, on es dedicava a perdre monedes a la màquina escurabutxaques del bar Hilton, un bar de xinos. No es podia afirmar que l’exposició constant de cara al públic, la vacuitat del gest repetit o la manca de qualsevol il·lusió vital el tinguessin traumatizat, però bé era cert que, després d’haver perdut uns quants calers i ja assegut amb una copa de birra a la mà, la seva figura, ja totalment divorciada de la del pastisser carismàtic, es transformava en la visió que només els ulls del petit Toni podien veure: la d'una massa fosca, amenaçant, envoltada d’un silenci profund que només ell, entre sorolls de monedes fent clinc-clinc i una tele amb telecinco a tot volum, podia escoltar.

El pes de tots els crosants se li apilaven sobre les parpelles, que tot i això no cedien del tot. No cedien perquè una força misteriosa empenyia en la direcció oposada. Aquesta força era constant, lleugera, extremadament precisa, tan calculada com la temperatura a la que cremava el forn de la pastisseria.

Dintre seu tenia un pensament que es concretava en un dubte, el qual a voltes callava, però hi havia moments en què, desesperat, reclamava resolució immediata. Un es pregunta: no és entre la pressió executora que genera el desig immoral, i la conseqüent repressió exercida per la raó, on es genera tota la locura, però també tota la genialitat?

La realitat era que aquell home volia velocitat. La seva vida era estàtica, reclusa. Desitjava tenir el valor per agafar una moto i baixar el carrer ràpid, molt ràpid. Un dia va decidir treure’s el carnet de moto. La verdadera bogeria és el reconeixement que una suma de circumstàncies, partint totes elles del caos, puguin conduir a un home a prendre una decisió en un moment concret, i no en un altre. Va aconseguir treure’s el carnet, i es va comprar una Suzuki molt guapa. El primer dia de tenir-la, va esperar a que es fes tard per poder complir el seu somni. El sol es va esfumar, el Joel va pujar sobre la moto, i va començar a accelerar carrer avall. Va sentir l’adrenalina. Li va agradar. Ho va tornar a fer, amb la diferència que la segona vegada un nen, el petit Toni de cal Perelló, sortia disparat del portal de casa sense mirar. La moto anava a 80, i el límit permès eren 30. El nen va quedar tetraplègic, però va poder seguir tocant el piano. En Joel va anar a la presó. La indemnització va ser tan gran que la família va haver de vendre el mític negoci. La seva dona va començar a treballar en una altra pastisseria. Les seves filles estaven molt tristes. En Joel estava content, aquell petit fill de puta va rebre el que es mereixa.

Segundo día en Japón (Marzo 29)

¡Buenos días Shizuoka!

Estamos más que listas para iniciar nuestra aventura en el Tour Monte Fuji, primer recorrido de dos que agendamos con Turismo Victoria. Uno por día.

Leímos la información del paseo y se veía bastante completo para ser honesta, en especial porque estaríamos haciendo varias paradas durante el transcurso del día. Pueden leer más aquí.

Para esto, la noche anterior, nuestro anfitrión, Suzuki San, nos había comentado que la estación Shin-Fuji, la cual era el punto de encuentro con los demás, quedaba bastante lejos, que no podríamos llegar caminando ni en tren, sino que teníamos que tomar tren y luego taxi. Y las dos así de "what, si buscamos este lugar porque pensamos que estaría convenientemente en medio de las estaciones de encuentro de los tours *cara de pato*". Ogui y yo sabíamos que tomar taxis en Japón simplemente no era opción ¿¡saben cuánto cuestan?!

Dicho aquello, esa misma noche nos pusimos en contacto con Alexis, encargado de Turismo Victoria, le comentamos la situación, pasaron unos minutos y nos dio una solución: nuestro guía, Frank, ¡podía pasar por nosotras! ¡Aaaah gracias gracias!! Ahora sí venía lo bueno.

Dicho y hecho, Frank pasó por nosotras a las 8:30 am puntuales del Viernes 29 de marzo.

Frank es originario de Lima, Perú y lleva desde 1992 viviendo en Japón. El país nipón es conocido por sus estrictas reglas hacia los extranjeros que quieran vivir allá. Las maneras más "fáciles" de hacerlo son: o te casas con un japonés o te vas a trabajar allá por un bueeeen rato, y a veces ni así te dan la ciudadanía... es más, ni porque tu hij@ nazca allá puede volverse japonés inmediatamente si es que es de padres extranjeros. Frank lleva casado con su esposa japonesa-peruana desde antes de mudarse para allá.

Llegamos a la estación de Shin-Fuji para vernos con el resto del grupo y algo que me da risa es que casi siempre suelo/solemos ser las chaparras del grupo jajaja, maldita sea.

Una pareja de canarios y tres chilenos serían nuestros compañeros de aventura de este día. Nos instalamos en la camioneta (yo me fui de copiloto voluntariamente, en parte porque me mareo fácil y también porque tienes mejores vistas alrededor 🤪) y nos dirigimos a nuestra primera parada: las cascadas de Shiraito.

El clima andaba muy Twilight, estábamos a punto de que nos saliera un Edward por ahí trepando un árbol.

Estando ahí en Shiraito podías respirar los aires más limpios y puros. Nuestros pulmones que viven en las (lamentablemente) contaminadas ciudades de Monterrey y CDMX agradecieron este viaje en gran parte por esto.

Después de tomarnos nuestras fotos y más que nada disfrutar de tan bello paisaje (porque lo que ven en la foto no lo es todo), y mojarnos el cabello recién lavado enteramente (porque llovió bien padre) nos retiramos a la camioneta para el segundo destino del día.

Nuestra amiga canaria, Fayna, dijo que para las 12 pm del día la lluvia se estaría disipando y estaría saliendo el sol, a lo que Frank le dijo "si el pronóstico lo dice es que sucederá" ¡Y SUCEDIÓ! súper puntual este pronóstico japonés (no es broma), pero bueno, no me adelantaré demasiado porque apenas son las 10 am cuando estábamos saliendo de Shiraito.

¡Segunda parada!

Las cuevas de hielo 🥶

No recuerdo bien qué era lo que hacía que estas cuevas mantuvieran el hielo todo el año... pero qué frío jaja. Un pequeño paseo muy entretenido cuya salida nos llevaría directo hacia:

El bosque de Aokigahara... también conocido como el bosque de los suicidios.

Frank nos dijo que nos vería a la salida de Aokigahara y nosotras así de "ah mira qué bonito".

Les seré franca, si nadie les dijera que este bosque es usado por muchas personas para desvivirse, una entraría sin el estigma de lo que la gente comete ahí y el lugar sería sencillamente un bosque muy hermoso. ¡Porque lo es!

Ogui y yo entramos por uno de los senderos que traza el bosque para quienes gustan de hacer senderismo, ya que el lugar es en general bastante visitado por tanto locales como extranjeros para ejercitarse.

El bosque tiene un área de 30 km2 y su nombre, Aokigahara, significa "mar de árboles" o "prado de árboles azules"; el lugar se formó en el año 864 después de una erupción del Monte Fuji y como el suelo es de piedra volcánica, los árboles que crecen ahí tienen sus raíces tanto por fuera como dentro de la tierra, una imagen que le da al bosque un aire muy poderoso e imponente, pero mágico a la vez. Pueden darse una idea de cómo estos lugares inspiran leyendas e historias.

Mientras estuvimos caminando por el bosque la lluvia seguía cayendo, y contrario a lo que uno imaginaría de lúgubre, esta hizo del paseo uno aún más hermoso. Nos tocó lo mejor de dos mundos, un bosque silencioso en donde lo único que se escuchaba era el golpe de las gotas contra las hojas y la tierra, así como nuestras pisadas, y la salida del sol entre centenas de troncos altos y retorcidos que dejaban entrar la luz de una manera muy particular; ya se sentía poco a poco el calorcito en el ambiente.

Al salir del bosque nos encontramos con nuestros compañeros chilenos y nos dirigimos al centro de información en donde nos esperaría Frank.

¡Dato curioso para quien vaya a Japón! En muchas estaciones de tren o metro y centros de visitas puedes encontrar sellos distintivos del lugar. Mucha gente suele llevarse sus libretas para coleccionarlos, como nosotras lo hicimos también. Por lo tanto, nuestro primer sello fue de ahí, de las afueras de Aokigahara.

¡A subirnos a la camioneta y dirigirnos a nuestro siguiente destino!

Llegaron las 12, y como lo indicó Fayna, el sol estaba saliendo y las nubes disipándose poco a poco. Perfecto clima para la parada de:

Iyashi no Sato

Este destino es un pueblo antiguo tradicional japonés. Cuenta la historia que en 1966 por culpa de un tifón que azotó se deslavó parte del cerro que está encima del pueblo, sepultándolo completamente. Los pobladores reconstruyeron la pequeña villa pero ya nadie quiso quedarse ahí... salvo uno. Un poblador que mantiene su domicilio en este preciso lugar y por ende es el único habitante de la villa.

El lugar está hermoso y puedes darte una idea perfectamente de cómo eran las casas "nice" dentro de las villas antiguas: techos de paja bien armados, paredes sólidas de madera, etc etc, muy bonito a la vista. También ayudó mucho que el día que fuimos a visitar el cielo se estaba despejando y el sol iluminaba bellamente.

Hoy en día la villa vive enteramente del turismo, por lo que cada casita que hay es un negocio que ofrece productos o servicios diversos: pinturas, cuentos, cerámica, kimonos, dulces, comida, todo lo que se pueda vender.

Fue en esta villa en donde nos detuvimos a comer una de las sopas udon más deliciosas que hemos probado. El udon es un fideo grueso, y el de esta cocina a la que fuimos es preparado a mano... toda la comida de ahí es preparada a mano, nada es pre-fabricado ¡y se siente en el sabor! Estaba exquisita nuestra sopa, tenía huevo, carne de cerdo, zanahoria, nabo, sazón miso si no me equivoco y bueno, podría seguir y seguir.

Convenientemente estábamos sentadas en una mesa a lado de la ventana del restaurante, porque mientras estábamos disfrutando de tal manjar decidió asomarse por fin la musa del este de Japón: el monte Fuji.

Qué belleza.

Nos terminamos nuestros platos, fuimos por una nieve de matcha y a seguirle.

Alrededor del Monte Fuji se encuentran 5 grandes lagos que hacía siglos solían ser uno solo (ya se imaginan el tamaño del lagototote). Estos lagos fueron divididos por las constantes erupciones del monte y la continua lava que caía en el mismo lugar, hasta el punto en que lo separó completamente (no me puedo imaginar la magnitud).

Nos detuvimos en el lago de Saiko a admirar un poco la belleza del monte y la naturaleza a su alrededor... y también para disfrutar del bello día en general.

Ya recargados los 7 turistas y Frank nos dirigimos a la que sería nuestra última parada del tour: la pagoda Chureito.

Esta parada tiene una de las imágenes MÁS populares que le muestran a los turistas cuando buscan información sobre el Monte Fuji:

Fuera de broma, creo que es de las postales más comunes que existen sobre Japón.

Esta pagoda está sobre un cerro de la ciudad de Fujiyoshida, por lo que para llegar hasta el punto perfecto para una foto había que hacer un poco de senderismo, pero una vez que llegamos al pie de dicho lugar fue cuando nos asombramos: el lugar estaba a reventar de gente, era demasiadisisísima, tanta que hasta nos hizo dudar de si queríamos NO, perdón... de si necesitábamos esa foto.

Sí nos tomamos una foto con el Monte Fuji de fondo, pero en otra ubicación y así también pudimos disfrutar mejor de la belleza arquitectónica que es esta pagoda y el templo que está a un lado sin estar apretujadas entre tanta gente.

En estos templos, sean budistas o shintoístas, es muy común encontrar piedras con agua pura que sale de ella y que está con el fin de purificar tanto afuera por dentro.

Si se lavan las manos con el agua estás purificando tu cuerpo, si beben el agua estás purificando el alma PERO ATENCIÓOOUUN; no siempre esta agua es potable, así que si piensan beberla siempre fíjense antes si hay algún letrerito que indique que se puede o que no.

Purificas tu cuerpo, te das un tiempo para un respiro y a seguir con el día.

Terminamos de conocer el templo y nos retiramos para ya en la camioneta echar unos últimos vistazos a algunos de los lagos que rodean el Monte Fuji. Veo tanta maravilla natural que tenemos a nuestro alrededor y me cuesta creer porqué no podemos cuidar de nuestro entorno mejor, porqué nos importa tan poco muchas veces... aaauunqueeee, algo que sí noté que es muy común de las ciudades japonesas a diferencia de muchas mexicanas es que en las que vimos (repito, en las que vimos) al momento de construir una ciudad casi no hay árboles entre las casas o sobre las banquetas. Sí hay árboles dentro de algunas propiedades, pero no vimos tantos árboles en las calles como para que hicieran sombra o simplemente co-existieran con sus vecinos. En fin.

Llegó el final de nuestro recorrido y de vuelta a la estación Shin-Fuji para dejar a nuestros compañeros canarios y chilenos, grandes personas. Nos despedimos y Frank nos iba a llevar de vuelta a nuestro ryokan porque resulta que ¡sorpresa! él vivía muy cerca de ahí (que convenieeenteeeee :D ).

Le preguntamos si era posible parar antes en un supermercado para poder comprar nuestra cena ya que era lo más seguro que la tiendita que estaba en el pueblo estaría cerrada, "sin problema" nos dijo, pero antes de llegar al supermercado pasamos a un 7-Eleven a que limpiara su carro, porque algunos de los 7evens que hay, aparte de ofrecerte casi casi una cama dónde dormir (es broma, pero ofrecen tantas cosas tan útiles que siento que es lo único que faltaría XD ) tienen autolavados a un lado, y para mi sorpresa ES EL CLIENTE QUIEN LAVA SU CARRO. No sé cómo sea en sus países de origen para quienes están leyendo esto, pero en México al menos es un servicio ofrecido por otras personas, ya el cliente al final da una propina a quienes se encargaron de su carro.

Por cierto, casi todos los 7evens, Lawsons y Family Marts que visitamos tienen impresoras para escanear, fax, imprimir y demás. Ooooooh.

Llegamos al súper, me paseé rápido (amo ir al súper, me encanta) porque ya eran casi las 8 pm y ya era tarde (para Japón) y conseguimos unas cositas que se veían bastante amigables jaja, y digo amigables porque como hay ciertos platos que no conocía y casi no tenía pila, no podía traducir como para saber qué estaba agarrando.

Compramos también un detergente para lavar ropa y áaamonos, a descansar.

Ya en el ryokan lavamos ropa, cenamos, platicamos y a dormir, que el día de mañana nos espera con más actividades.
