hearing the opening notes of ‘sing, sing, sing’ and the collective groan from everyone at the swing dance. bc it is SUCH a good song and it is THE swing dancing song BUT it’s the full 8 minutes & 40 seconds you’re committing to dance to at an unending fast tempo and by the end EVERYONE is experiencing the gasping for air with burning lungs and quivering muscles and slippery palms and cramps under the ribs and beads of sweat running down your body like raindrops on a windshield and your feet weigh a thousand pounds but you can’t NOT dance. you can’t slow down. you can’t quit halfway. you HAVE to make it to the end. so ‘sing, sing, sing’ comes on and there’s the collective groan and then the frantic scrambling for a partner and then the aggressive jockeying for a space on the dance floor and THEN everyone comes alive to the sweet sounds of benny goodman & his orchestra and the feeling is unlike anything else in the world

These images could either be a metaphor about the relationship between man and machines. Or just a sign that you think robots and swing dancing is neat. Need a gift for the robot fanatic in your life? These are available as a set on my etsy.

Jitterbug - Only Go Up From Here - Strictly NRC Dancing
Author Notes: Here it is! The last fic for this AU/series. I'm actually kind of glad to be reaching the end. These dance fics have been fun to write, but I'm looking forward to getting back to my usual fics. As for the dance in this fic, I don't actually have a particular performance that I was heavily inspired by for this one. Just like the rest of this AU/series the reader is female for this fic. I hope you enjoy!
If you would like to read more this AU/series, the fics can be found here: Strictly NRC Dancing AU Master-List.
Type: Dance AU/ Female Reader/ Fluff/ Can be taken as romantic or platonic
Word Count: 903

The jitterbug dance was, as Vil understood it, an amalgamation of all of the various swing dances. As such, anyone who had already taken and failed a swing dancing class previously was taking the jitterbug class in hopes of at long last passing this final dance class that was being offered.
The jitterbug’s nature as being the most general of all swing dances was also why Vil had chosen it for his class.
Because while Vil had danced before in various films, it was always some sort of slinky dance befitting a villain. The jitterbug was, as all styles of swing were, a dance for a lead role simply because it was fun, free, and most certainly not suited for someone in the role of an antagonist.
And then there was you, the perfect fit for a lead female in any film. Wreathed in smiles, ever willing to help, even if at times grudgingly, and seemingly fearless when it came to saving others from themselves in even the most risky of situations.
Vil couldn’t have hoped for a better partner.
What was unfortunate was that you seemed surprised that Vil was perfectly capable of letting loose and enjoying himself.
He supposed he couldn’t blame you. He was usually serious because he had to be. After all, the eyes of the world seemed to be constantly on him. Such was the life of a celebrity.
But here at NRC, he was no longer quite so special and was allowed certain freedoms since paparazzi weren’t constantly lurking around some corner. And one such freedom was getting to behave more like a normal teenage boy who wasn’t constantly under the harsh glare of the limelight.
But you were incredibly accepting of both that and him. While you had briefly hesitated at first, it hadn’t taken you very long at all to relax around him, just as you always did. Unconcerned as you danced alongside him, laughing all the while as you glanced his way with glittering eyes that showed your enjoyment.
Crewel had obviously wasted no effort in teaching you. You’d already learned all the other forms of swing dancing and passed all of the previous classes. Not even Sam could say anything against your performances of his beloved style of dance.
Vil had no concerns about whether you would do well in this, the final dance class NRC would hold. If something went wrong during the performance, it was going to be on Vil.
Not that he was concerned.
There was a certain freeness to the jitterbug that Vil discovered he’d been craving. He hadn’t noticed it during the lessons when he’d been dancing with other partners. In fact, it hadn’t been until he’d practiced choreography with you that Vil realized that this uninhibited joy was something he wanted. Something he’d been searching for in his own way.
And during the performance, he found it again. That strange, free sense of joy that stemmed either from dancing the jitterbug or from dancing with you.
Vil did wonder if that joy was present simply because you let go of any expectations you held towards him and allowed him to exist, dance, and laugh alongside you.
You whirled across the floor, fully trusting him to execute any lift, spin, and even do an around-the-world flip that hadn’t been entirely planned.
The improvisation angle was brilliant to him and felt like ad-libbing except for the raw amount of trust it required you to place in him. When you finally touched back down, ending the dance with your feet hitting the ground as you laughed breathlessly at him, he couldn’t keep the smile off his face.
You were grinning as well, still slightly out of breath, as you brushed a few escaped hairs out of his face before unconcernedly taking his hand and leading him across the dance floor towards where the so-called ‘judges’ sat.
And it was so like you to not be worried about what being by his side might mean. But then Vil supposed that to you he wasn’t a famous celebrity first and foremost. No, to you, he was always Vil first.
“That was amazing! The jitterbug is a slightly less codified dance than the others we’ve had as classes, and you still managed to execute it smoothly and with incredible precision. I expected nothing less from a professional such as yourself, Mr. Schoenheit, but I am still impressed.”
Crowley was practically beaming at him, but as soon as he spoke, Vil could already feel the glow of the spotlight returning to him. Reminding him that while you had provided him a brief respite from the limelight, it was going to return.
And he accepted it. He’d chosen and fought for this life after all. Being famous was what it took to reach the heights he sought, so he accepted it all.
But he couldn’t deny that the little breaks you seemed so innately capable of providing him had become beyond precious to him. Sometimes it was nice to just be Vil.
Not Vil the actor. Not Vil the model. Not even Vil the singer.
Just… Vil. The young man who’d just danced out there with you and earned his passing score on his own efforts even though he had nothing to prove to you. After all, you’d seen him at his worst and accepted him.
And now he could only go up from here.

I went swing dancing last night with some friends and all night I had my eye on this one guy who was kinda cute and absolutely killing it on the dance floor. After like two hours he finally asked me to dance and it was so fun! I'm still learning, but he was so patient with me and even taught me a new move (armbreaker dip). I'm not in love but I definitely felt something dancing with him

He pulled Stede closer, chest to chest. The fingers of his right hand found the hair at the nape of Stede’s neck, tangling there as his left hand moved down his back to rest between his shoulder blades. His breath caught as Stede’s fingers tugged at his belt loops, palming heavily at his hips before moving higher to grip at his waist, broad palms fitting neatly into the dip between his ribs and hips.

*kicks down door* I just had an idea!!
so isekai anime/manga usually has the mc use their knowledge of earth to their advantage. Either to survive like Katarina Claes or to live a better life like Melissa Podebrat or Rimuru tempest
But sometimes they use that knowledge to try to create something from earth that they miss, like food or something, which made me have this idea
dancing! A mc who got isekai-ed and teaches people different dance styles. Katarina teaching her friends some dance moves from anime she loved or something. Melissa swing dancing with Nine or Yuri or both. Rimuru accidentally letting it slip that he can only do the robot and then showing people how to do it
I’d find it most interesting to see this occur in a series that takes place in a Victorian like era where people are conservative with clothing and etiquette. Picture a mc wanting to open a dance studio that teaches a wide variety of styles, from box step to pop and lock, break dancing to pole dancing
I just think it’d be cool to see a person try to teach fancy nobles how to dance without a care in the world, mainly pole dancing tho. Cause at first you think it’s sexual but then you realize that like the other styles, it’s fascinating and beautiful in its own way…plus it’d be funny

Jive - Quite Literally Floating - Strictly NRC Dancing
Author Notes: Another character I have never written a fic for, but I can say he was an interesting person to write. I also now have a healthy respect for the people who dance jives and a healthy alarm for the aerials and flips that are done in swing dancing. The dance in this fic was largely inspired by Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold’s jive on week 9, season 22 of  Dancing With the Stars. It's an enjoyable performance that is well worth watching so I recommend it. Just like the rest of this AU/series the reader is female for this fic. I hope you enjoy!

I rolled my shoulders in preparation for what was no doubt going to be a very…. Interesting, experience.
It wasn’t that I was scared or didn’t trust Lilia. Because as much of a trickster as the potentially ancient fae was, he would never let me get hurt and would sooner hurt himself before he caused me any injury during the dance.
I also wasn’t actually concerned about the dance I was going to be performing with the lively third year. The jive was a good fit for Lilia. It was bubbly and vivacious, just like he was.
My only concern was how well he would obey the rules.
This was Lilia’s third dance class, and by now it was beyond obvious that the man knew how to dance. I could imagine that this was due to his having been part of the Valley of Thorns court, as I understood it.
During choreography practice, he’d even told me that dancing was like child’s play to him. Which was perhaps the reason why he had so much fun taking the rulebook and throwing it out the window as hard as he could.
I eyed the short man with at least a small degree of wariness that had his pink eyes sparkling, “Let’s have fun with this, child.”
There was a giggle to his voice that had me wondering exactly what the mischievous little fellow was planning, even as I shook my head with a slight smile, “As if you’d have it any other way.”
Everything was fine at the start of the dance, with the two of us having few to no problems. In fact, dancing with Lilia was almost like dancing with a shorter version of one of the teachers.
He knew exactly what he was doing, where he needed to be, and how to guide me around for the maximum effect.
A small part of me began to wonder if he would indeed pass this class without incident. Perhaps the jive was just wild enough that he didn’t feel the need to add his own sort of pizzazz to the dance. But I soon realized that I’d been ridiculous to think that when I noticed the height of Lilia’s head had shifted.
It took only a glance to confirm my fears. The fae man was no longer grounded and was now, quite literally, floating his way through the dance. Perhaps the most impressive thing about it was that he was still executing his moves perfectly.
To make matters worse, he was gradually pulling me up with him, causing my grip on his to tighten as my eyes flew back to his sparkling ones. He winked and gave a tiny snap of his fingers on his free hand as he released me.
I let out a tiny squeak in fear before realizing I had not fallen. No, I was seemingly dancing on an invisible dancefloor even though I no longer had a hold of the impish fae, who was still grinning as he danced next to me.
I looked up, my eyes finding Crewel’s, who looked just as flabbergasted as I was and offered no guidance. Leaving me to place all my trust in whatever magic Lilia had worked as I resolved to do my best to finish the dance as planned.
And it was a good thing too, considering it had come time for the flips. I glanced over at my partner to see him already grinning my way. Obviously ready for the part of the dance he'd dubbed his favorite section just moments before we’d started dancing.
I cartwheeled towards him, his hands catching my waist as my arms locked around his legs, and he proceeded to cartwheel while holding onto me. I made a total of three revolutions with him like that, stopping hand in hand with him and letting him twirl me back into him as he lowered us to the ground.
We touched down to the final drum beat of the pounding song, with me still holding quite tightly to his shoulders as I forced myself to relax.
I was on solid, visible ground again.
I’d known dancing Lilia would be undoubtedly fast-paced, but nothing could have prepared me for having to dance while floating at least a foot over the ground with a considerably excitable partner who’d been giggling the whole time.
I at last released the still chuckling fae and stepped back, eyeing him closely.
Lilia had just executed an impressive jive that I doubted anyone else could pull off, but he wasn’t passing this class. Because while there was no rule explicitly saying you couldn’t float, something told me that Trein, at the very least, would frown upon that.
Especially since there technically weren’t supposed to be any lifts in a jive, though that rule had been flouted with astonishing success in past classes.
True to form, Trein was frowning, Crewel was shaking his head, Crowley and Vargas didn’t look like they knew what to think, and Sam was laughing.
Lilia glanced my way and shrugged, eyes still sparkling like those of a little boy who knew he was in trouble but really didn’t care, “Tough crowd.”
“Lilia… You do realize you aren’t supposed to use magic in these classes, correct?” I didn’t know if I pitied Trein at this point or if I was impressed with his ability to continue enforcing his rules.
Lilia shrugged, giving a little fanged grin at Treins’s question, “I just couldn’t help myself; Y/n makes a wonderful partner, and the jive is an equally enjoyable dance.”
“Be that as it may, I’m afraid you aren’t going to pass this class either, Mr. Vanrouge,” Crowley shook his head, still mystified-looking, but delivering the judges' grade nonetheless as Sam at last recovered.
“Even though that was possibly the funniest jive I have seen. Especially with the face Y/n made when you started floating.” The shopkeeper was still wiping away mirthful tears as Lilia offered me a smooth bow and wink before strolling off to watch the next performance.
