Plant of the Day
Wednesday 16 August 2023
As Syringa vulgaris (lilac) ages the trunks tend to lean more to the horizontal. This habit gives the multi-stemmed trees so much more character.

Syringa protolaciniata
Plants in the genus Syringa are known as lilacs, and they are native to Eurasia. Syringa vulgaris is the common lilac, widely grown in gardens in temperate regions of the world, and it is taller-growing than the plant pictured here. I have labeled my photo Syringa protolaciniata, but its name and origins are in dispute. Many people think this plant is a hybrid originating in southern Asia, perhaps in Iran or Afghanistan, but in any case it is much shorter than S. vulgaris, though it shares the delightful fragrance for which lilacs are famous. It belongs to the Oleaceae, or Olive Family.

'On days like these ...' sings Matt Monro. The man on the radio has forgotten to mute his mike ... he's murmuring along with Matt and the shuffle of papers can be heard. The track finishes, he's talking of Quincy Jones and the fact that he's seen him wear Crocs. Too early for the traffic lady, but you don't need to be Mystic Meg to guess the state of the roads.
Must have been a fan of Febreze in the shiny metropolis yesterday. The car park reeked of the stuff. That or there's now a new world record for the largest Glade plug in. (Adds gas mask to shopping list).
Bliss to get home again, spend time with smallest dog gazing at trees.
Brought home a sorry looking Syringa (Lilac). It rivalled an elephant for the amount of water it sucked up overnight. Had to say sayonara and so so sorry to the one that had been in the tub next to it on the shelf. I like to try to save the seemingly unsaveable plants, but a dead stick in a tub is beyond my alchemy.
The traffic lady is back, the traffic report is as expected ... I'm off to talk to the trees ...

I made this character introduction comic for a class last year and got to redo it for another class recently! I've definitely come a long way with my inking skills, panel layouts, character posing and staging, though I could really improve my lettering. Hopefully one of the upcoming comics will show that! Also took this opportunity to update Poppy and Syringa's designs a bit.
