What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year? of men and of angels was such a labor of love and I’m so happy with how it turned out.

Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year? I mean I always sort of do my own thing, but graveyard whistling (and why things hurt) felt like a risk at the time because I know people have very strong feelings about Eddie and Shannon and I didn’t know what the reception would be like to a fic about the complexities of grief.  Also the sub!Eddie series was a big writing risk because I really don’t write explicit smut all that often in general and I had never written explicit D/s (maybe a teeny bit in the one sex scene (1.5 if I’m being generous) I wrote for I Hit the Accelerator last year, but I was NOT the powerhouse behind that side of the fic by any stretch of the imagination).  

Do You Have Any Fanfic Or Profic Goals For The New Year? My kingdom to finish Woke Up Married and the Victorian AU (and also write the things in my drafts that are extensively plotted but barely written)

Most Popular Story Of The Year? Not sure which metric we’re using for this, but of various options: keep my brittle heart warm [the girl!dad Buck/safe haven baby fic]; fire on fire; and Woke Up Married (aka found and lost).

Story Of Mine Most Under-Appreciated By The Universe, In My Opinion: Me writing yet another Eddie introspection piece like “I know this will flop, but I think it’s very sexy of me anyway.” (Aka, graveyard whistling, only human, nothing more, and die for you in secret (the Eddie POV of the safe haven baby fic, which...while it didn’t flop per se, looking at it compared to the reception the Buck POV got never fails to make me go hmmmm)).

Most Fun Story To Write: I know I’m only writing it for like 5 people and a cat because very few people care about my extremely niche and specific AUs, but I am personally having a blast with the Victorian AU (The Rogue’s Gamble (Love and Other Scandals)). Also the Criminal Minds/BAU AU.   And I would be shamelessly remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Carbon Date Me, Excavate Me, which I co-wrote with @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels while cackling like a witch the entire time. 

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: I’m gonna plead the fifth. 

Biggest Disappointment: I don’t really think about my writing that way?  I mean, I definitely have fics that didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted them to, or that I’ll reread a few weeks or months later and nitpick and think “oh, if only I had thought about [X], this could have been so much better” but they’re all labors of love in their own ways and I don’t post anything that I’m genuinely unhappy with.  

Biggest Surprise: Definitely the sub!Eddie series. Also I spent probably at least a year insisting that I was never going to write the concept that turned into of men and of angels and then I did so XD

My Favorite Part Of Fandom This Year: finding my people in the “unhinged, but with a braincell” corner.  Special shoutouts to the groupchat ladies, my ride-or-die @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels, @from-nova, @chiquititadiaz, @yramesoruniverse, and last but certainly not least (could never be least) @mistmarauder who dropped a podfic on me totally out of the blue back in the spring and probably had no idea she was going to be adopted.

2021 fic year in review 🌟

fandom’s i’ve written in: 911 and 911 only baby

looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you expected?

oh god, way, way more. i used to write a lot of fanfic, but i sort of stopped, after my masters, because life got in the way and my mental health just wasn’t the best. finding and falling in love with 911 during the first lockdown was such a fun thing for me, and i didn’t imagine i’d end up writing so many fics for 911 this year but i did, and it’s been incredibly fun. i’ve really fallen in love with writing again, and it’s all due to this lovely corner of the internet. 

what’s your own favourite story this year?

sometimes its hard to see what the future holds. i didn’t think i’d write an au for 911 (as i’m very attached to the universe they all already exist in) let alone a sports centric au but i loved every second of writing this one. writing it was just so enjoyable - i was excited to open up my computer and make progress on it just to know myself how the story was going to end, and i’m just very happy with how it turned out. 

and @like-the-rest-of-la made the most magnificent art for the fic and i look at it at least once a week and am overwhelmed by how amazing it is! 

did you taking writing risks this year?

i don’t know if its necessarily a risk, but i wrote and i've been told, i'm heavy to hold in a new style - the story was very much built around the quotes i chose, and i quite liked the approach. it’s not my usual writing style, but i’m glad i challenged myself to do something a bit different. i can tend to fall into the trap of writing the same sort of thing so it was good to put myself a bit out of my comfort zone.

i also wrote vague smut, in all good things come to an end (but it's not the end) which is not necessarily a risk but just something that’s outside of my comfort zone 

do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?

i would really like to challenge myself and write a chaptered fic! i haven’t written one of those in a really long time, and it’s something i’m not always the best at - i tend to lose focus or interest (the only chaptered fic i’ve attempted for 911 is not actually finished, yet) so i think it’d be a good challenge in discipline and focus to sit down and write a chaptered fic. i don’t think a fic has to be chaptered - but some would suit it, and i’d like to see if i could actually get it done and do it well. 

i have a few wips i really, really want to finish too. mainly the academy au - which has been in the works for like, most of a year now. i think i’ve built it up to be The Fic of all Fics in my head and so i’ve really struggled to make progress on it, and i’d like to just sit down and write it and get that finished, next year. 

most popular story of the year?

life sure can try to put love through it. it is WILD to me that it’s already got over 1,000 kudos and over 8,000 hits and i only posted it in november. wild, but fantastic - because i loved writing the fic and i’m so glad people really did enjoy it too. sometimes when i am feeling down about my writing i just read the comments on that fic (and others) and it cheers me up massively. i am very overwhelmed by the reaction that one got!

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion

without losing a piece of me (how do i get to heaven?). i just - i love this fic. i loved writing this fic, and it’s maybe one of my favourite’s i’ve ever written and i poured my soul into it, in so many ways, and i think compared to some silly ones i’ve whipped out in a half an hour, it’s under-appreciated. i just love it a lot.  

similar feelings from my side RE: i haven't been myself in a while (i'm sorry). i’m really proud of that one. i felt like i got into eddie’s head writing that one and i love how it turned out. 

most fun story to write 

definitely call me baby, maybe. it’s silly and sweet and was the most fun to write! i think i wrote it in like, one day, one very rainy day, and my hands were totally cramped up and i had the biggest smile on my face when i posted it. i was googling ridiculous petnames for it for inspiration and just giggling to myself the whole time.

most unintentionally telling story

got me feeling like it's all it's gonna be okay. because who out of all of us isn’t a bit violently touch starved after the plague, and years of suppressing your desire to be a clingy little bitch so you can portray yourself as the strong independent woman you think you need to be? just me? cool.

biggest disappointment 

i don’t think i have one. i know that’s a bit of a cop out answer, but i really am not disappointed in anything i posted this year. regardless of the hits/kudos/reviews my fics got, or didn’t get, i am happy with them all, and i’m proud of them all. 

i’m my own biggest critic, sometimes, and so i am trying to remind myself that fic writing is a hobby, for me, and it doesn’t have to always be perfect - as long as i’m having fun, and enjoying the writing process. if i’m really disappointed in something, i won’t post it - i’ll put it in my ‘eh’ folder (beautifully named) and i’ll either come back to it in a few months and see if it sparks joy again and if i want to try and rewrite it (fun fact: baby, won't you take me home for christmas has some repurposed scenes from a fake dating fic i abandoned months ago)

biggest surprise

the fact that 'cause when you open your eyes, i feel alive got such a good reaction when it wrote it in twenty minutes in the middle of a meeting lmao. spilling all my secrets here but i didn’t even proof read that one. just posted and forgot. 

my favourite part of fandom this year 

god, all of it. it’s been the most fun year, and a great distraction from the weirdness of the plague, etc. all the theorising, and silliness, and meta, and fic, has just been the absolute best. to be cheesy for a second: i feel like this fandom has been a reminder of how brilliant the internet and fandom is for me. i’ve had such fun, for so many reasons!

What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year? I can't pick just one because I'm a biased bitch: alone again tonight with you, the smoke in your eyes and boys of summer

Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year? I'm not really sure? boys of summer was a totally drama-free, fluffy, smutty fic, which is not my usual thing, but I loved writing it! And I wrote a fic from Maddie's POV which was something new as well (my love has come along).

Do You Have Any Fanfic Or Profic Goals For The New Year? Probably just going to keep writing whatever I want, lol - specifically though I'm working on a post-5a, anti-Taylor fic (well it's kinda anti-Taylor, she's not sympathetic in it at all), I'm also working on the next Songs fic - after that, not sure. I probably want to write another suspense fic at some point.

Most Popular Story Of The Year? Definitely try to love me if you can. It's my most popular story by far - I don't know if anything will ever top it? As at the 21st of December 2021 it's at 54,357 hits and 3,565 comments, and I still get people reading through and commenting on each chapter!

Story Of Mine Most Under-Appreciated By The Universe, In My Opinion:  My Maddie fic (my love has come along) but I knew it would flop when I posted it. I just really felt like writing Maddie's POV ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most Fun Story To Write: you light my morning sky with burning love and the entire Cooper-arc in the Songs Universe was super fun, I was genuinely having a blast when I was writing his scenes.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: wherever we're together, that's my home - I've had a fucking tough couple of months.

Biggest Disappointment: I don't know if I should be brutally honest or not? So like... the amount of people I see saying how much they love the Songs Universe, messaging me, talking about it on TikTok/Twitter - like that's great, but... the comments and kudos don't really reflect that? I pretty much entirely go off how people respond to a fic on AO3 as opposed to what happens elsewhere, so yeah... I'm not saying I'm going to end the Songs Universe or anything because I have fucking plans, guys, and I'm not fishing for comments, but it can just be a little confusing for me, I guess? So yeah, if you love it, the best thing you can do for me is to leave me a lovely comment on AO3. Nothing motivates me more than comments.

Biggest Surprise: How the Cooper-arc in the Songs Universe was received - honestly, I never planned it. I wrote him into one of the fics because I wanted Buck to get a little banged up, and I put in a throwaway line about Eddie catching him checking Buck out, and then all the comments were, what the FUCK is up with this Cooper guy? and thus a villain was born 😅

My Favorite Part Of Fandom This Year: It's been a fucking WILD RIDE, you guys. We've had some fun. We've gone nuts together and screamed and wished for Eddie to get shot and then stuck in an elevator, and then we were stuck on Buddie roommates era and then we wanted them to get taken hostage, and they DID, and like... yeah, Seasons 4 and 5 have been fucking wild and fun. Looking forward to more chaos in 2022, y'all!
