Sometimes it's good to create stories that are nuanced and meaningful and explore deep themes and complex characters. And sometimes you need to create stories that make you CACKLE WITH DELIGHT because of how dumb they are.

now that one of these shows has ended I have a public confession to make: I spent an EMBARRASSINGLY long amount of time under the misapprehension that Succession and Severance were the same show.

I was only familiar with either of them from contextless posts on this website and twitter, they're both grim and business-y; look. The names are similar. The names are similar. But what it meant was, in the build-up to the Succession finale when everyone started posting more about it, I was very confused at how the show had seemingly shed all of the strange surreal elements it had "started off with", and how the characters seemed so much like just ordinary people in a realistic drama about power and family. Only a fateful revisit to wikipedia* brought truth like a thunderbolt down upon me.

But anyway congratulations to the Roy siblings for escaping the uh, the suffocating corporate atmosphere and reclaiming their lives and identities? Yes.

*(the first visit, a long time ago, only left me puzzled at the Succession episode summaries not mentioning any of the surrealism, but I dismissed it as wikipedia episode summaries just not being thorough)

How does music work and what is an e major

Here's my simple explanation

This is a piano keyboard

If you just hit random notes without rhyme or reason, then odds are it isn't going to sound very good (jazz musicians, bear with me)

So usually when you start playing music, you want to play songs using only a certain subset of these notes. This set of notes are known as "keys". For example: when you first start playing piano, odds are, you'll be using all of the white keys while avoiding black keys. In doing so, you'll be playing in C Major Key:

It's called "C Major" because playing the notes from one C to another (the notes marked in blue) make a major scale (being performed here).

The "Major" part of it comes from where specific notes lie on the scale, since where a note is on a scale can be incredibly important when you're composing music. Think of them kind of like flags that help guide musicians to direct how the music will feel (most notably the 1st note, 3rd note, and 5th note, seen below in green)

Now there are other types of scales that use the exact same notes, but have different notes in different places on the scales, which can greatly affect how it's used in music. For instance, A Minor uses the exact same notes, but the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes are in different places in the scale, which gives a much different vibe (below we'll see the 1st note marked in blue and the 3rd and 5th note marked in green, along with a video showing how the vibe is different [granted its transposed a little differently, it should still give the right idea])

So all of this to say that when I told the person asking about what key MAD RAT, ALIVE? is in, what I was saying is that it uses these notes on the keyboard (specifically using the notes marked in green/blue the 1st, 3rd, and 5th)

Now it isn't STRICTLY limited to these notes on the keyboard (since accidentals exist), but this information is super useful for mashup artists. This is because if you can pitch shift two songs so that they have the same key, you can make sure that not only are they using the same set of notes. Because like we said at the beginning, just throwing random notes together doesn't sound great, but keeping it contained within the same set of notes sounds far more harmonic. Also they're using the same 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes as their guideposts, which aligns them together much better.
