During our last stream we had an absolute blast. I completed a few reference sheets and got a nicely coloured sketch of one of my comfort characters. This tiny moment is one that I completely misinterpreted for the first decade or more and I still don't know exactly what I think but I'm going to ramble anyway. I played with filters to make the tie more obvious, because for the longest time, I thought Moya John threw scissors and Talyn John threw rock.

And that makes sense, right? They had two different experiences while they were parted for several months, and that made them into two different people. He talks later to Aeryn about not being the same person, and that her feelings, "you're just like him, you are him" are wrong. So I never questioned when my dark DVDs and fuzzy TV made it look like they tied.

But then I saw the 4k versions, and I was watching on a good screen and I could slow it down and pause and replay, and nope! They are both clearly throwing scissors. And the whole beautiful symbolism falls apart. Why did they tie? Does that actually mean they are the same person? Why doesn't John or Aeryn truly seem to believe that?

Everyone will have their own opinions, but how I think about it now is that this was a promise from Talyn John to Moya John. Yes, they had different experiences. Yes, that means they diverged. Yes, being with Aeryn changed Talyn John in ways Moya John couldn't (yet) understand. Talyn John feels older, calmer, more settled and mature in a rather dramatic way to me. But the tie is a reassurance that they are still both John. That they can be made whole. That the core of who he is, the man that loves Aeryn and controls wormholes is still capable of being loved by Aeryn (and learning to control wormholes). It will just take time.

We aren't wholly our memories and experiences. Which is reassuring to me, as a person who struggles with long-term memory formation.

John was twinned. "Equal and original." They are both him. They were always both him, even if he doesn't remember what the other twin experienced (yet). Moya John and Aeryn both struggle to believe this, though, for similar but related reasons.

Aeryn can't believe that he is actually John because she is terrified of loving him. She isn't mentally strong enough (yet) to survive his loss again and she knows that John is about to throw them all into terrible danger. She tries to convince herself that he's just a copy because she has to for her own sanity (but ultimately, eventually, she gives in. He is John, she does love him, and she can't won't stop herself from wanting to be with him).

Moya John can't accept that he is the same as Talyn John because it's just too psychologically weird. He was in two bodies having two different lives, and the whole time he knew, he deeply knew that the other guy was with Aeryn. Because he would have upended the universe to make it happen with her, so of course he did. A lot of Moya John's irresponsible and annoying behavior can be explained by the constant maddening awareness that his life was in the middle of being stolen by himself. For his sanity he has to create some sort of mental accommodation to survive being twinned, and turning the other guy into The Other is how he manages it. And then the Other is gone and now he's on this long journey to recombine his two selves.

I think the tie is a promise that they haven't diverged too far. That they're still both him. John doesn't realize it yet, but he is already starting to reintegrate his two selves. We will see him eventually, slowly, recover all the memories and knowledge that Talyn John possessed, he will even join together with him physically (it's not a coincidence that he injured his head in the same place, leaving the same scar, when Einstein unlocks the wormhole knowledge). Only when his integration is complete can he fully move on, marry Aeryn, have their child, and move forward to the next stage of their singular destiny.

That unification is something John can't even imagine in this moment. But the tie, that's hope.

If laoft characters hadn't already had names, what names would you have chosen?

ooooooh okay so ironically. they did almost, technically, kind of, have different names

in my VERY first notes reference for laoft, literally written in my phone the day after CLBG aired and i desperately wanted to make a really cool role for what i thought was the series newly introduced antagonist, was a list of characters "true names"

basically, i was going to take the idea of being careful with your true name to the maximal extreme, to the point that your "true name" in wickhills wasnt even your legal name, but a completely secret name that only you and your parents knew. Logan, Patton, Virgil, Roman were all going to be "outer names" and these new names i wrote would be the true ones.

and also that these names got little add ons as you aged and met certain milestones, developed certain traits. i dont know if any of you have read eragon (and i dont reccommend you do) but it had a similar system

so Patton was going to be born "Adal" (righteous, sincere, noble), and then sometime in toddlerhood gain become "Adalwin" (Win meaning friend. He gained Eulalos (which i later reused the feminine form for Eulalia the parakeet!) when he got his gift, and "Clement" (Gentle) when he befriended Logan.

Roman was born "Wynne" (friend), which became "Hartwin" as a toddler ("hart" meaning brave, or a male deer). around the time he started hunting fae he gained the second name "Kemp" (warrior) and after the deal gained "Alcaeus" meaning "strength"

Logan i never settled on, but the top contenders were "Mattan" (gift), "Epiphanes" (appearing) and "Irenaeus" (peaceful). i also played around with the idea of matching twinny names for Logan and Thomas. Samson and Jericho (sun and moon), Florus and Thales (flower and blossom), Artemidoros and Apollodoros (gifts of the moon and sun, respectively).

And you've actually already seen what Virgil's was going to be, or at least part of it. "Brennus" the name of Virgil's character in the Fair Folk and Fortresses universe, was my pick for his first name, and the full thing was going to be "Brennus Aelfric Sitheach"

Brennus can mean king/prince or raven, Aelfric means elf-king, and Sitheach means fairy-like. i also had this idea i thought was clever that the reason the curse worked so well was because it changed his true name from "Aelfric" to "Aelfstan" (Elf Stone) ie froze him to stone

like i said this was literally my very first laoft document, so none of this really survived once i started worldbuilding in earnest, mostly because as you can see it would have been really just wildly impractical.

its so old that it still has the name of Thomas's IRL friends as classmates (joan valerie talyn etc) from before i decided i wanted to use cartoon therapy characters instead and save the fictionalized real friends for thomas to meet in college AND from when i was still assuming it was going to be moxiety and logince.

changing the two separate romantic plots in The Darkest Part Of The Forest to one poly love "triangle" was the point where i really started to diverge from "making a one-to-one DPOTF au" to making something that was more personal to me. im not even entirely sure if i'd call this particular document LAOFT LoreTM but its definitely a step in the process i think is kinda neat!

August: Blonde, sharp, and severe, he's the one who brought you into the fold. A zealot, some might call him. The Order doesn't name His Grace as a God, but August certainly seems to think that He is.

El: Long, thick black hair, skin tanned and freckled. She's a mechanic of the Order. Talented, there's no doubt about it, despite her occasional airheadedness. Sometimes, you can't help but feel that she's hiding something.

Jasper: Gender selectable. Muscled either way, with dark skin and deep brown eyes. Loud and arrogant—and they have what it takes to back it up. As the first new arrival to the Commune in… all of history, they could pose as an omen or a savior. Either way, they might shatter everything that you thought you knew.

Icarus: The Head of the Order. Everything else about them is shrouded in mystery.

Copious mentions of blood/flesh(Nonhuman, not caused by violence.)

DISCLAIMER: I'm a student and a slow writer in general, so updates might not be very frequent. Nevertheless, I'll try to see this story through.

Hello everyone! This is a work that's been in the making for a little over 5 months now! Does Aeryn realize that Crais has a thing for her? Like, she can’t be that dense but she also doesn’t have much of a reaction to it. She recognizes the competition between Crais and John regarding her in the episode “Green Eyed Monster”, but like, dudes are just like that sometimes. John 100% recognizes that Crais has a thing for her, but either she’s dense or she’s really good at ignoring it and not letting it affect her at all. Like, he’s such a non-threat she just really doesn’t care 😂

One of the FUNNIEST Crais moments is in s3 in “Thanks For Sharing”, when John comes aboard Talyn with Aeryn, and Crais stops mid-sentence when he sees him, and gives him the death stare. Aeryn sees it and turns to look at John and then has zero reaction and starts talking to Crais. Bro thought he was going to have her to himself but oops, here comes love of her life John Crichton right behind her 😂

Edit: I just remembered a scene in The Choice where it is revealed that Aeryn is very much aware of Crais’ feelings for her 😬

Joan gave the characters their spark it's sad to see it didn't carry on after they left the team, I think Thomas can write characters like Logan, Roman and Patton ok in theory but the dark sides? I'm scared to see their future characterization it's already gone downhill for the dark sides (Remus and Virgil)

I think part of the reason for this is because Remus and Virgil are both written with specific mental health issues in mind that Thomas doesn’t have much knowledge on himself. A lot of the input for the anxiety and intrusive thoughts came from Joan and Talyn.

I saw some ppl doing name HCs for the STP princesses and wanted to hop on that!

Most of these are based on some Tupperbox RPs, where my friends played some of them and they gave each other names, but I liked them a lot so that's just their name now

(If I don't mention someone in chapter 3, they share a name with their chapter 2, also Shifty is just Shifty to me I'm sorry girlie)

The Princess: Millicent (sounds like a princess-y name idk, fancy fancy, friends can call her Millie)

The Stranger: Doremi (as in 'do re mi fa so la ti,' I normally name my Dodrios this when I play Pokémon (one note for each head) but the one I caught yesterday I named The Stranger, so I thought it would be cute if they swapped names)

The Damsel: Primrose (often shortened to Prim, got it from a fanfic that changed my brain chemistry)

The Prisoner: Jade (because she's jaded)

The Beast: Dinah (like Alice's cat from Alice in Wonderland, Prim named her once they got close otherwise she wouldn't have one)

The Adversary: Crimson (she named herself and it kinda shows lol /aff Nightmare was like 'yas girlie you're covered in the stuff')

The Razor: Talyn (like talon, sharp like she is)

The Tower: Destiny (no comment she's definitely a Destiny)

The Nightmare: Mary (a friend named her, could just be short for Nightmare but imagine if it was like Bloody Mary lol)

It's still Tuesday, right? Time for a tiny moment? Okay I was feeling lazy and didn't edit this down to a precise little second. I could have grabbed just the middle but I really liked seeing the whole setup, with Aeryn teary eyed, trying to be strong for Pilot, and then the cut to bring it from him back to her to make it loop nicely.

This is from Family Ties., talking about naming Talyn. And I thought of it because of that sweet picture of these two hugging I reblogged a few days ago. This is well before The Way We Weren't, and yet it's so clear already how much Aeryn had changed, softened, embraced casual touch just for comfort. The way she caresses his cheek then flips to run the back of her hand against him too, it's just cozy and warm and gentle. And she's just sitting there on the console, feet dangling like a little girl. It's so adorable.

This isn't an Aeryn she usually lets anyone else see, not at this early point, not even John. It's only for Pilot, who she can't help but understand and be drawn to the way she is drawn to Moya herself.

And Pilot, he is different with her too. He doesn't have her fierce walls. He's built connections with most of the crew. But at this point, only Zhaan touches him so casually, I think. And Aeryn, a former Peacekeeper, the first ones he never feared. Actually, I can't remember many scenes with anyone touching him in Season 1. Something to look out for on my next rewatch.

But anyway, just a sweet little moment that I appreciate, because it feels so real and looks so real that you forget it's a giant puppet. You just want to snuggle them both up and tell them it's going to be all right .

A Very Heavy Rant / A Call to Action

Hi. My name is Talyn. I’m an 18 year old trans person in Texas. This is a rant. Scroll away if you don’t want to hear it.

It is so fucking hard to be a trans person in the US right now. It always has been, to be completely honest. Our country has had a reputation of sweeping us under the rug, abusing us, robbing us of our rights, and actively trying to eradicate us. And I’m fucking tired of it. All of us are.

I spent most of my education in public school in the south. You can imagine what it was like. Regular bullying, assault, harassment, you name it. During my senior year of high school, I was threatened so many times that my schedule changed over 5 times. Thankfully, I recently graduated and got out of that hell hole.

I was only at that school for one school year.

I moved over 300 miles before I enrolled there. No one knew me at that school. They had never seen my face before. Most of them didn’t even know my name. But the words they called me instead were plentiful. I barely talked at school, except for in one class or two classes, and I dressed very differently from everyone else. To them, I was faceless. To them, I was just an easy target. I had never done anything to them and yet I was the subject of their ridicule, their dopamine hit when they wanted to be mean to someone.

Thankfully, I had two adults on my side at that school. My counselor and my English teacher. A cliche, I know. But they were my lifelines. My counselor’s office and my teacher’s classroom were the only places I felt safe at school.

And the sad thing is, I was lucky. Lucky to have not one, but two people who actually cared about me at school. I am forever in their debt for keeping me safe and alive. They were my guardian angels.

The thing is, the places that people like me feel safe are very few and far between. And they’re starting to disappear more frequently. So far in 2024, over 550 anti-trans laws have been proposed. At least 142 of those laws specifically target gender-affirming (LIFE-SAVING) healthcare.

How many more have to be proposed before we start dying en masse? How many of them will pass before trans people start dropping like flies, or worse, are never even remembered? How many of our brothers and sisters have to suffer just to exist?

We have lost so many of us already. Too fucking many.

I’ll admit it, I’m scared. Scared for my fellow trans individuals, scared for adults of trans youth, and scared for myself. We are all under attack. And there isn’t just one person to blame.

At what point do we say that enough is enough?

I would like to make it very clear that I am not saying that we should resort to violence. I don’t believe in it. I’m saying we petition and we speak out and we protest. We make sure they can’t ignore us, while still being peaceful.
