Film after film: The Invitation (dir. Karyn Kusama, 2015)

This pleasantly slow-boiling though mostly predictable horror film displays what I have just come to identify as typically problematic of Kusama's almost-great films: there's a boring aesthetic glibness to what the film sounds and looks like, which unfortunately translates into the acting. No one is particularly interesting here, no one gives a bad or flat performance. There's simply not much registering beyond the impressive twisty reveal that sets off the speedy and bloody final act.

This is not fair. It is like comparing apples and oranges. It's also a fact that since Andrew did Angels in America, directors and producers have directly offered him roles. And even with Angels in America, Tony Kushner and Marianne Elliott wanted him. Jessica Chastain asked him to be in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Lin Manuel only wanted him to be Jonathan Larson, Dustin Lance Black called him for Under the Banner of Heaven. I don't know if creators think of Chris in this way, but I doubt it. The agent has nothing to do with it; it is the actor himself.

Also true. A good performance is going to speak for itself and lead to more creatives offering roles to that actor. They’ll land roles on merit alone 🦎
