I had the idea of a Remnant yearbook. A yearbook of all students of all years and all staff from all 4 four academies during Team RWBY's freshman year. But then I thought, how many teams are there in each year? We really don't know. We only know that there are at least 3 per year per school.

A yearbook is an amazing idea and I absolutely loathe that we never got anything even remotely like it. Can you imagine all of the cool or interesting things the show could have done with that? Like, Tai unshelving his old yearbook, and showing it off to his kids. Or Team CFVY pulling out a copy of theirs from first-year in order to prove some dubious fact (“I swear, Professor Oobleck used to have a beard. Look, here’s the picture—”).

Or, for something a little more somber: A third-year team who lost a teammate, and occasionally, one of the students stares quietly at the photo taken from the year before, back when their team was still whole.

There’s so much application for a yearbook in this setting and I am gutted we’ll never get to see any of it. What a waste.

Your second point warrants investigation, because the size of the student body always puzzled me, too. On a whim, I pulled up “The First Step” and rewatched the initiation scene. Here’s what I found:

Total number of people: 16. Number of blacked-out silhouettes: 7.

All of JNPR is in this shot. We see three members of RWBY and two members of CRDL, which means that three of the silhouettes in the lineup belong to Blake, Sky, and Dove. That leaves four people unaccounted for, who presumably went on to form a fourth, unnamed team.

(Mind you, this is working under the assumption that the omission of Blake et al wasn’t an animation error. Which given the track record of V1 – V3, is a distinct possibility.)

This means that at the time Ruby entered Beacon, there were possibly four first-year teams.

On a superficial level, the math checks out. Sixteen entrants means that everyone gets neatly sorted onto a team without there being any stragglers.

But you’re right to wonder how many teams there are in each year, because when you think about how the enrollment system works, it doesn’t make any sense. Like, what happens if there are 22 applicants that year, and all of them come with glowing recommendations? Is Ozpin going to arbitrarily refuse two of those students because they would be two people shy of having another four-person team? Huntsmen are a non-negotiable part of the kingdoms’ survival, and training new batches of them is Ozpin’s job. Is he seriously going to turn away eligible students, and compromise the future security of his country, just because he’s adhering to a precedent derived from a fairy tale?

I wish I was kidding. Like, no joke, the (totally-not-a-retcon) reason why the academies assign students to four-person teams is because the King of Vale was inspired by a Mistrali folk story, The Hunter’s Children.

As V5 showed us, the kingdoms can—and sometimes do—face Huntsman shortages when a sudden, large number of them are killed off. That is a very real, very possible threat. Therefore, the idea that an academy might deny someone entry on the basis of four-person teams (and thereby contribute to a future shortage) is indicative of a dangerously flawed system.

Granted, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing from a story-telling perspective. For starters, plenty of real-world colleges and universities have waitlists because there are only so many students they can accommodate at a time. And there’s nothing wrong with including flaws in your work, if your plan as a writer is to point out and deconstruct those flaws within the story.

But RWBY doesn’t do this. It doesn’t tell us if the academies can only accept a certain number of students per year, or if that number has to be a multiple of four. It doesn’t tell us if they have a waitlist, or if there’s a vetting process for deciding which applicants get to enroll that year. It doesn’t take the time to draw attention to how tradition might actually make things worse, or have the characters propose new ideas in its stead.

But, yes. A yearbook would be a lovely idea. Perhaps we could use it to bludgeon the show to death.

The batch are literally in Devil's Deal for 2 minutes so we be doing a joint watch babes. Special recognition to the introduction of the greatest hair in the GAR, Captain Howzer, and a lot of screen time for my favorite babes who I wish would stop committing war crimes for the Empire

Here's why I'm putting that as a sibling moment - we've seen this squad face down entire cities worth of troopers at this point (Raxus was just 2 episodes ago, and we've seen them take on 3 ships worth of clones too) without even batting an eye. But one sighting of Crosshair and they're all grumbling and that's what throws them in the "we can't pull this off mentality" and I interpret that as coming from the continuing theme of the Batch being so proud of each other's skills and enhancements, they're so in awe of each other, and the only thing that could ever give them a challenge is one of them. He may be their enemy right now, but they still believe in Crosshair's skillset so much that just him makes them decide to abandon the mission

Alright babes, if you've been along on TBB ride before, you know these next two are tension filled extravaganzas. The "sibling moments" are definitely going to be more on the hurt/emotional side, but we're gonna get through it together!

The tension between Hunter and Crosshair is supreme sibling angst. They're both so hurt by the other and so mad but have the literal emotional IQ of a 10 year old and are so bitter

"They'll still come for you" dripping with venom with the pause and pointed look back

Also wonder if he feels slighted at Hunter explaining the squad knowing it'd be a trap - Crosshair has predicted their every move during each of their encounters, of course he knows they'll know it's a trap. I don't think this was malicious by Hunter but I think Crosshair could take it that way

Echo taking on the role of distracting anxious sis and keeping her hands busy

"If I go any lower, we will be in the water" Tech just listen to your sister

"Never doubted you for a second kid!" Wrecker is so supportive of everyone and especially Omega 😭

Tech is so stoked about the tube system 😂

"You, uh, alright?" ECHO NOTICING OMEGA'S DEMEANOR AND TRYING HIS DARNDEST TO COMFORT HER STAHP IT

Echo's look up at Tech and Wrecker when Omega deflects 😭

Hunter constantly glances at the stormtrooper walking with him and Crosshair cause he wants to be alone with Crosshair so badly to knock him on his skull and try to knock some sense into him

Literally, his eyes only narrow when they go on the stormtrooper. Even when he faces Crosshair and keeps his Sergeant face, his eyes soften each time they land on Cross

Hunter's eyes are literally pleading with Crosshair

Dear god these rewatches and detail catches are going to be the death of my heart

"They'll come to us. They don't leave their own behind. Most of the time" HUNTER IS STARING DOWN AND TO THE SIDE WITH SHAME IN HIS EYES WHILE CROSSHAIR SAYS THIS

Hunter now doesn't give a fuck if the stormtroopers hear him, he's in desperation mode

"Hm. And I did" said while the same score that was used during the platform scene in "The Outpost" makes me want to throw myself off the roof now that I've realized this

This has turned into a Hunter and Crosshair analysis instead of sibling moments so sorry

"Is that true?" "How could I possibly know that?" said with an eye roll. Iconic

Hunter's attempt at trying to reason with Crosshair, his eyes are so soft the whole time 😭

Wrecker's amused and excited "Oho, he's waiting"

"Welp, guess you were wrong about that" at Tech thinking they were expected to come in the main entrance and not the lift BUT CROSSHAIR KNOWS HIS BROTHERS AND KNOWS WHAT THEY'LL DO

Hunter's shock and pain when Crosshair says "You weren't loyal to me"

Crosshair's entire speech is a desperate sibling needing his brothers back

"Omega belongs with us" when Hunter says "us" he doesn't turn his head to indicate the group behind him and himself, he leans towards Crosshair, emphasizing the word and widening his eyes like he's trying to drive the point that Omega belongs with the Batch and that includes Crosshair aka Crosshair belongs with them too

Tech noticing the pucks, elbowing Wrecker, and they both lower their shoulders slightly - that's a sign of trust

"Why would we trust you?" Hunter doesn't say this aggressively. He's in a casual position, his body sideways to Crosshair. His stance is not of action but observation. At this point, he feels no actual threat from Crosshair, and that line is a test

"Don't become my enemy." "Crosshair, we never were" SOMEBODY SEDATE ME 😭😭😭

COORDINATED BATTLE SCENE COORDINATED BATTLE SCENE AND THEY FALL INTO STEP LIKE THEY'VE NEVER BEEN APART

Honestly, what sibling pairing hasn't had to solve their issues by body slamming each other to the floor

So many pointed looks between Hunter and Crosshair trying to size each other up and figure out where they stand. They want to be on each other's side so badly

Hunter's face is so desperate during his final plea to Crosshair

"That depends on when Echo plans to get the drive back on line" said with so much nonchalant sarcasm while they're literally fleeing a space battle

"I'm working on it!" older sibling is done with younger sibling shenanigans

"You named that thing?"

"Well, we did steal from them" "Technically, the Rhokai stole the lizard first" sibling 101: make sure you correct your sibling even when in the middle of piloting a ship while fleeing a space battle

"They don't see it that way!" older sibling needs younger siblings to just concentrate

When Tech says "Time to get scanned, Wrecker" it's light but concerned and his eyes are so big and worried

This entire episode is just protective little bros ready to tear apart the galaxy to find their big sister

Echo and Hunter's wide eye glances to each other when Omega's voice first comes in

Wrecker's pop into frame "Omega?!"

"Hang on, kid. We're coming for ya!"

Tech calmly walking her through how to best reach them

The others act quickly, but their voices are all frantic talking to her. You visibly see her relax as Tech calmly talks to her, and you can't tell me he didn't know what he was doing with her

Tech's "Excuse me???" stare at Hunter when Hunter literally shoves him out of the way after Omega calls after him 😂

Omega literally had no self defense training on Kamino, everything she deploys against Bane was taught by her brothers you can't tell me otherwise (her smarts are all her though)

My crush on Fennec Shand was activated in the Mandalorian, but this episode. Woooo baby

"Wheeere in the Lido system?" followed by Echo's "cool it" glance at Wrecker

Wrecker's big eyes and relief in his voice when he sees her in the pod

You can literally see Hunter wants to fight every tear that dares fall out of her eyes like they're personally offending him and her

Wow does Omega vouching for Cid really hurt now

After Cid explains it can't be known they're involved, Echo turn to Wrecker who then gives him a "I guess" shrug

Tech subtly reaches out to Omega to stabilize her when they get on the mining carts why is he so gentle he needs to stop for my emotional stability

"Ugh, and I thought Wrecker was a slob" you are on a stealth infiltration with a time crunch why are you sassing your sibling

THE 4 BROTHERS' NO HESITATION TAKING OUT ALL OF THEIR WEAPONS AS SOON AS THE PYKE BARGAINS THAT OMEGA STAYS WITH THEM WHILE THE SPICE IS RETRIEVED THEY DIDN'T EVEN DO THAT WHEN HE GAVE THE ORDER TO HAVE THEM ALL KILLED RIGHT IN THE PARLOR HUNTER TRIED TO REASON WITH HIM BUT THE SUGGESTION OF OMEGA BEING TAKEN CUSTODY BY THEM AND THEY'RE "BLASTERS OUT" NO QUESTIONS PROTECTIVE BROTHERS MODE ACTIVATED INSTANTLY

They're all so grouchy walking to the Marauder after having to leave Omega

"I got the kid into this mess, and I'll get her out" GOD DAM IT CID WHY WHY WHY WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU

Hunter is so proud of Omega's compassion like they didn't just watch a drug dealers son get his horn chopped off by the biggest drug syndicate in the galaxy

I'm sorry but the creators choosing to have Omega teach Hunter a lesson in empathy - the soldier who's only ever known "bad guy bad, they must be punished" and never had to face the grey areas of personalities and to look to his older but little sister and ask why she stuck up for him and then his proud shoulder touch and smile down at her - to end the episode was so smart and so well done

Omega as youngest smallest sibling and getting the floor to sleep on

The shove backwards to have a sibling meeting about a sibling

Wrecker's second youngest energy

"Yeah add it to the list" as Echo casually noms on his ration bar

Tech COMPLETELY ignoring Echo as he rattles off about the ship's state LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO HIM

"Repairs would go faster if I had some help" combined with pointed head tilt and glare. A+ passive sibling sass Echo

"I thought you said they were defective?" Echo loves to call out Tech

"Getting thrown out of hyperdrive. I'd say that's pretty critical Tech." "It's not affecting life support. We are fine." "Are you kidding me?" Siblings 101: maintain sass levels at all times even when crashing towards a planet

Allow me to go feral over over analyze this scene because it's one of the best examples of siblings confused and betrayed but still sad

The hope in Wrecker's voice and the hopeful glances they all share talking about the inhibitor chip

Hunter going full big brother mode focusing on the task at hand

Love the rollercoaster of going from soft, confused siblings to Tarkin experimenting on my fave. I want to throw a rock at his head

"Careful, those capacitors hold a massive charge" at the literal experimented genius. Echo is the sibling who needs to explain everything

"I'm a little busy at the moment"

Echo and Hunter both have the same tone and drawl when they say "Tech" in an exasperated way and that's hilarious

"That would've been good to know beforehand, Tech" Echo is so done with and also loves Tech so much

FUCK THAT LAST ONE REALLY HURTS NOW

"I'm part of this squad too now, right?" followed by Echo's shoulder shrug at Hunter like "I don't fucking know what else do we do with her?" was literally my siblings every time they had to babysit me

Hunter's "what's the worst that could happen?" shrug at Tech

Now for the scene that whenever someone says "Hunter doesn't care about Crosshair he never shows any emotion towards him" I will shove their face in the screen and make them watch until their little brains comprehend it

Little Omega copying everything Hunter does down to the same knee bend and finger sifting of the dirt

Omega asking a question every 10 seconds while Hunter is trying to complete a mission

"Can I learn to track like you?" BABES 😭

Hunter's glance back at "Crosshair" and the deep sigh he follows it with

His eyes widening and then turning down with sadness and some anger

Hunter's shoulder sagging sigh at "He can't help it"

"I'm angry at myself. We don't leave our own behind" someone sedate me

Hunter's determined nod after Omega says they'll find a way to get Crosshair back

Cut to the toothpick committing war crimes. IT'S FINE it's fine, he's just going through some things *anxiously sweats in Crosshair fan*

"I tracked the dragon, like you did" Omega is so precious dear god

"Is that my blaster?!" A+ older brother slightly concerned and slightly proud

Crosshair standing to glance around their barracks (keep in mind, last time we saw him enter them, he just shoved his way in, not giving anything a second glance, and in this shot we follow his gaze go across Tech and Hunter's bunks that still have their markings on them)

THE GLANCE DOWN AND PAUSE AT THE MISSIONS BOARD SERIOUSLY SOMEBODY SEDATE ME

Obviously all of these are solo and not actually interaction with the Batch, but Crosshair's slow walk to his bunk to be followed by a deep sigh and obvious look of contemplation/thinking on his face is 10000% him thinking about his brothers you cannot tell me anything differently because you are wrong they set it up for exactly that and the lone shot of him on his bunk, shoulders slumped and clearly defeated wrecks me

"Yeah took you long enough" Wrecker your brothers literally just fixed an entire ship

Hunter's fond and proud look at Wrecker as he unveils the room to Omega 😭😭

No those aren't tears on my keyboard, it's its weekly salt bath

Here we are, the end of Season 1. You thought "Return to Kamino" was an angsty sibling machine? Buckle in kids

So so so many protect Omega moments just in the first 2 minutes

Crosshair waking up to them in a wrecked Kamino City has to be on similar energies as Obi-Wan waking up on the back of Anakin hanging from a chord in an elevator shaft with an elevator barreling down at them

Crosshair's "the audacity" face when Omega starts shooting the debris 😂

Crosshair gets a Wrecker shoulder shove 🥰

"Aha our old room! Wai-what happened to it?" "At least the smell's gone" Echo's the neat freak sibling who won't stop shaming everyone

"All those missions together, and you threw it away" Crosshair, babe, you are literally trapped in a city underwater, now is NOT the time to hold a grudge

A+ "check your attitude" shoulder shove by Hunter to Crosshair

"You done complaining?" Wrecker squaring off against the hangry sibling

"All that time, you didn't even try to come back. We still would have taken ya" and the camera pan to the rest of the group sharing looks with each other 😭

Crosshair's face when Tech is explaining his nature to Wrecker is so soft (for Crosshair) and hopeful that someone is finally getting him but also so shocked that someone is actually giving him somewhat of a defense (even though Tech clarifies after with one of the best lines written by Star Wars)

Ep 14-16 are just Hunter's no good very bad day when you think about it

AZI is the best part of this episode I swear

Until they show me the head scan there is nothing that will convince me Crosshair had his chip removed this episode makes me believe that tenfold

Hunter and Crosshair's get along pod 😂😂

"I barely fit in this thing." "Quit complaining! At least you're not doubled up" Echo is so done with everyone

Hunter frantically looking for Omega 0.5 seconds after their pod surfaces

The AZI part makes me ugly sob every time

The firepuncher didn't have the suction cup attachments already in place before they got in the pods which means Crosshair realized Omega wasn't going to make it, went into action to put on the attachment, and then saved her

"You coming with us?" said with so much hope and Echo's face is cautious but curious

It's such a serious moment but Crosshair answering Hunter's final offer by just looking to the side, arms crossed and hips cocked is peak grumpy sibling who knows they're wrong but don't want to admit it and are scared of going back to either option so they go with what they're most recently familiar with but can't look anyone in the eye while he realizes

Me? Overanalyzing Crosshair? Shocking

"You're still their brother, Crosshair. You're my brother too" followed by Crosshair's dejected sigh as he hears the Maruader power up and watches it fly away someone shove me off a cliff honestly it would hurt less

Well babes, this was a fun run. Going to take a little break and then pick this up again with Season 2 mid-August! Hope you all enjoyed the reminiscing and taking in all the sibling moments - I know I certainly did
