rant below i just needed to get this out lmao
just got into an argument with a queer swiftie over dismissing future, metro, schoolboy q, and gunna as unknown artists and now my brain is about to explode
“ttpd is the only album released this year still being talked about” was the tipping point
how can someone center whiteness THAT much when I’ve been seeing SO MANY ppl talk about we don’t trust you, blue lips, and one of wun (granted i am on hip hop twt but still)
ALL of those albums debuted in the top 15. one of wun and wdty debuted in the top 2!
THE DRAKE AND KENDRICK BEEF OFFICIALLY STARTED FROM LIKE THAT OFF WDTY
the obsession white queers have with centering whiteness in music specifically should be studied bc idk what’s wrong with us, it’s so embarrassing

i’ve wanted to talk about this for a while now but i’ve just never sat down to write it because i’m scared of people’s reactions but you know what, fuck it.
this is not hate to taylor. it’s more of a judgement to swifties. if you’re allergic to opinions, better click off now.
i am so so so tired of swifties critiquing people for simply not liking ttpd. and no, i’m not talking about the people who are simply hating on it ‘for the fun of it’ or jumping on the hate train. i’m speaking the people who are simply offering their honest opinions on the album and then getting DRAGGED for it.
i’ve seen this album being treated as if it’s some underground indie album and taylor being treated like an artist that has 100 monthly listeners. the point is that she’s not. a lot of taylor’s listeners are not people who will sit down and analyse every single lyric and notice every parallel on her album covers, since, yknow, she’s the no.1 artist in the entire world. she has a shit ton of casual listeners who know her for her pop hits. that’s how pop music works!!! surprise!!
moving on, as this youtuber said in this video (which i recommend watching), this album felt a lot more like a “lore dump for die hard fans to decipher” and according to these fans if you’re not willing to sit down and analyse it, or simply, if you don’t get it, you’re criticised and considered “less intellectual” or “a fake fan” or “someone who peaked in high school” (which is crazy btw).
continuing with the constant judgement, when i say that i don’t like the sound of this album im greeted with, “but the lyrics are incredible!” okay? what if i’m here for the music and not the lyrics? but if i say i don’t like the lyrics either (which is true in my case), “i don’t understand taylor enough” or “oh well this album is peak her, it’s not for you lol” because apparently people are not allowed to simply dislike something without some kind of justification.
and to close off, you’re not better than everyone else for liking this album, or because you know taylor’s “lore” (another crazy thing to say when we’re talking about a PERSON?????) well enough to understand all the messages she’s sending through it. and judging someone’s intelligence because “they just don’t get her incredible, metaphorical, never done before” lyrics which include “im queen of sand castles he destroyed”, “touch me while your bros play gta”, “and you say i abandoned the ship but i was going down with it” is simply insane and out of line
sincerely, a taylor swift listener

I have to way I'm a bit surprised by all the hate charles gets and all the support carlos gets
I used to think charles was more popular
I guess when it comes to Fandom he does have a bigger one, but I think general audiences seems to support carlos more
Maybe it's underdog narrative idk. Like charles is constantly called spoiled, brat, whiny etc whenever he says ANYTHING that isn't super nice, while carlos can bitch as much as he want and barely gets called out
Fandom is always a bubble. I'd say the top two drivers in fandom are probably Charles, Max, and Lando because they're the ones that are popular with younger audiences. It's certainly not true outside. Sure, there's an RPF to fandom, but I think it's also worth noting as well if you're in F1 fandom, you're probably a more avid viewer of the sport than most casual fans, so things like Max's current domination are made more interesting by knowing the ins and outs of his journey, and it's easier to reject anti-Charles viewpoints because when you watch a drive like Suzuka in real time and look at the data afterwards, you understand why the past four WDCs think him generational, and why Carlos is a GOOD driver, indisputably, but has a deficit of skill in comparison to Charles which is masked with luck.
Also ultimately, it's a difference in what type of PR sells to different generations as well. Charles has carefully cultivated quite a strong parasocial relationship with a very loyal fanbase mainly comprising of the countries of Italy and Monaco and younger fans–he does this through playing into inside jokes online with his fans, making us feel like we have a 'special' understanding with him by liking certain tweets, or using certain emojis, or using pictures for his instagram that sneakily reflect a piece of online discourse that happened on a race weekend. Carlos has gone for the more traditional media approach of an underdog narrative to gain sympathy, but he doesn't have the same legion of loyal fans as Charles and makes no effort to build the same fan backchannels that Charles does, which is why I think that Charles, ultimately, will win the PR game. The support of traditional media is fickle, but the lecfosi would follow Charles into hell if asked. It's why Charles knows ventures like LEC or his music will succeed, wheras can the same be said for Carlos outside of Spain?

Soph I love you but Taylor Swift does not “make herself the victim” there’s so much valid shit that has happened to her for us to feel that way about her, which most of her fans honestly don’t even see her as - granted there as some obnoxious ones but that goes for all fandoms.
Like for example of the experiences I was talking about.
- being sexually assaulted and then being called “greedy” for suing the guy.
- being painted as a “snake” because she didn’t react well to someone writing a misogynistic song about it. Which I feel like is a valid reaction as a woman in entertainment.
- being groomed at 19 by a 30+ something year old.
- getting called a snake worldwide for a narrative that 2 people - who were more famous than her at the time invented.
- being bodyshamed constantly when she had an eating disorder
Yes she’s privileged and has always been, coming from money and having fame, but she does not portray herself as the “victim” and the fact that people think she does just for standing up for herself makes me sad, not because of her but because being a woman myself it just paints the picture that women’s pain or experiences will always be brushed under the rug because we’re classified as “dramatic” and “we should take it with more grace” “be thankful about the good things” like??
I understand that you don’t like her but that assessment just seems wrong.
like i just. you realize you're proving my point right? like this - not just this message, but all of the ones i've gotten where people are waxing poetic about all of the struggles taylor swift has had and how she is absolutely a victim and how dare i suggest otherwise - is exactly what i'm talking about. you feel the need to jump down the throat of anyone who says anything remotely negative about her. this is the whole "victim" narrative, that she is vulnerable and must be protected and defended from all negativity at all times at all costs.
and like. that is on purpose. she has cultivated that narrative for this reason. so that publications are now afraid to post reviews of her albums with bylines because their journalists are getting death threats if they criticize her.
i am not suggesting that taylor swift has never had anything bad ever happen to her. that would be insane. i am trying to say that this culture that has been cultivated within her fanbase of defending and protecting her, is extreme and irrational. and when you don't buy into it, it makes a lot of the content surrounding taylor swift very hard to swallow.

Honestly my fault for getting my hopes up after seeing the aesthetic and name of the album. It's so disappointing... it's like she's given up polishing lyrics altogether. Anyways we still have billie soon so I'm seated for her.

The conversation around Taylor's portrayal of mental illness and treatment is an opportunity for us all to make the world a little kinder. Many of us may not have experience with these things firsthand and may not have thought about how certain memes and theatrical portrayals could be hurtful to others. But we've had a fair number of community members brave enough to share their deeply personal, often traumatic experiences with us. They've asked that we consider their experiences and stop making jokes about them, especially considering that these topics are still heavily stigmatized. It doesn't take anything away from us to listen and be empathetic. A few less memes and aesthetic posts, maybe, but that's a very tiny drop in a sea of endless content and moves us towards being a community that values the mental well-being of others.
